Wersi Atlantis History - The history of this fantastic organ - By Stefaan Vanfleteren

  • I had several questions about my Wersi Atlantis. What is it and where does it come from? ...Some friends even did not knew the Wersi brand at all. Of course most of my RUclips subscribers know it very well. But since there does not exist a nice historical summary, I thought "well let"s make it myself". It is made in a very short period of time, so it is an "efficient" version. But I do hope it can educate some people :-). Enjoy the next 12 minutes ...

    I’m a little late ,but just saw this,Stefaan. A Fantastic video of information about Wersi Organs. They are a pretty new company. Considering how long Organs have been around. Experienced playing a pump Organ way back in 1949-50 . L.o.l. I was only 10. It was at the Parochial School I attended. I have a Granddaughter born in 1976. That doesn’t seem like very long ago. Thank you for sharing your Multi- Talented self for all to enjoy. Best Wishes always,Chris. 💕🎶🥀🎶💕🥰😎🎹♥️

    Bravo Stefaan! I enjoyed learning about the history behind the Wersi line of instruments. I am in my 70's and I am retired now, but I was employed in Power Transmission and Distribution for a large electric utility in the US. I wrote construction orders for overhead and underground power transmission and distribution for residential, commercial and industrial power expansion projects. It is wonderful to know that you were involved in electronics for the Wersi line. Not only are you an engineer, but you are also a very gifted musical artist. Your command of the English language is also admirable! Best regards, Will Ortiz

    Keyboard oder Piano ✌. Deine Abonnenten-Zahlen gehen ja ganz schön durch die Decke, ist doch super 👍👏 v G aus Lüneburg 🇩🇪 Dietmar 🙋‍♂️🎹🎼🎵🐶🍀

    Auch beim Bass habe ich außer dem Livestyle Bass mit der Gitarre 1 Oktave tiefer nicht wirklich einen schönen Bass im Pedal bei meiner Atlantis gefunden!

    Thanks Stephaan for making this video. It is true that I have known Wersi for a very long time and its history. They are absolutely formidable instruments indeed and which have evolved very well. What do you think of this new OAX technology which has made a very impressive technological leap with increasingly realistic sounds and still these magnificent organ sounds with KW and FL ? Once again, thank you for all these videos which are very happy to watch and which many of us are waiting for !

    • @StefaanVanfleteren
      @StefaanVanfleteren  3 года назад

      Thank you very much Patrick ! Indeed, the OAX series is the "icing on the cake" of the Wersi-evolution and a top quality instrument, it cannot be enough recognised by musicians. I like it very much and will probably invest in an OAX instrument in the future. However, I also like the vintage instruments a lot, because some of the particular analog sounds are still very typical and not easy to imitate by sampling. So for me it is not "the one or the other", but "then one AND the other" ;-)

    Great informative video Stefan, if you had the time you would be
    good to host an on line forum just for the older Wersi Instruments
    one question I have, why are so many people playing Wersi on
    RUclips and using Ketron modules, which say's a lot for Ketron
    but little for Wersi.

    • @StefaanVanfleteren
      @StefaanVanfleteren  3 года назад +1

      Thanks David. The use of the Ketron module is - for my personal case - only to add some live drum loops and a few recent orchestral samples to the basic sounds of the vintage Wersi Spectra. However, I see the module also used by players that want more style accompaniments than the ones they have in their Wersi organ. For an older organ this is understandable, but I never understood what the added value is for a OAS or OAX. Of course, if you only want the best automatic style accompaniments, you even don't need an organ, then you probably better use the Ketron or Korg keyboard, or the Tyros.

    The Atlantis has to be the most beutifull Organ ever made, even they maybe "borrowed" the spaceship design a bit from Yamaha :) And it's stil one of the best sounding Wersi's ever made.
    I was attending a Concert in the Early 80'es as a big teenager in Copenhagen with Franz Lambert on his Galaxis and a new Digital (small) model that I am not sure what was, propably the early DX series wich completely failed to impress. Even with sampled sounds it didn't sound very good. I have always been a huge fan of the Helios and Galaxis which still is the king of analog sounding organs, and kinda dreamed of building one myself. But Wersi took some years to get on the digital wagon. When we heard those digital Wersis I was very glad of my at that time brand new Yamaha FS-70 wich was miles ahead with a for that time quite impressive real sounding drum section.
    To this day I'd still love to have either a Galaxis in working order or an Atlantis even it would require dumping some furniture from the livingroom to fit in :)
    But I am glad i didn't got on to the dyi thing with the Helios after hearing stories about how many of those Organs ended up back at Wersi for them to fix users bad solderings and other messups.
    Don't think the whole DYi thing was a success at least not for the buyers. but maybe it was good for Wersi for the repair jobs :)
    Doing small amateur radio projects yourself is one thing, but those organs had thousends of solderings and was really not a thing amateurs without electronics training and equipment to measure with should take on.

      Thank you so much for this nice comment. Indeed, the Atlantis is also for me the most beautiful organ ever made. Best regards from Belgium !

    Hi I have a Wersi abacus, can you give me advise, what is the best sequencer program to use please?

    • @StefaanVanfleteren
      @StefaanVanfleteren  3 года назад +1

      Hello Neil. As a sequencer program I use Logic on my Apple computer. However also the (very cheap) Reaper is a good software. It depends of course what exactly you want to do with it and how far you want to go in Midi editing. Best regards from Belgium, Stefaan

    Leuk, die info over het onstaan en de ontwikkeling van Wersi.. (nooit geweten van die zelfbouw periode..)
    Wat ik minder vind is dat de huidige reeks "draait" op Win10..
    Ik had een op linux gebaseerde OS systeem logischer gevonden..

      Beste Basje, dankjewel en ik ben in elk geval blij dat ik je al iets heb kunnen bijbrengen wat je nog niet wist ;-) Inderdaad, Linux zou wellicht een meer tijdloze en open-source oplossing zijn geweest. Maar ik ga er van uit dat de ontwikkelaars de verschillende OS hebben vergeleken en bewust voor Windows hebben gekozen. Zelf heb ik (nog) geen ervaring met OAX, dus ik kan hier niet onmiddellijk mijn visie over geven. Maar wie weet in de toekomst... Veel groeten ! Stefaan

    Dank je voor jouw uitleg, Stefaan. Maar nu heb ik één ding niet begrepen. Stamt het model van jouw orgel, jouw nieuwste aanwinst, uit 1994 en heeft daarna enkele "upgrades" gehad? Zoals het schermpje links onder op jouw orgel met hierin moderne ritmeboxen etc?

    • @StefaanVanfleteren
      @StefaanVanfleteren  3 года назад +1

      Beste Patrick, het instrument is inderdaad voor het eerst op de markt gekomen begin de jaren 1990. Er waren daarna twee upgrades die konden gebeuren : de Golden Gate (dus een uitbreiding met touchscreen en samples zoals in het Pegasus Keyboard), en een uitbreiding met de OX7 module die via virtual modelling orgelsounds imiteert. Mijn orgel had al direct de Golden Gate bij het bouwen in 1994, de OX7 module werd wellicht enkele jaren later ingebouwd. Maar het geheel staat dus op de laatste technische stand van pakweg eind de jaren 90. Veel groeten , Stefaan.

      Hi Mike, thanks for your reaction. I guess you could put the Wersi Comet for “free” in one of the many organ lover Facebook groups. I liked the typical sound of the Comet very much, however I have no space anymore for another organ 😉. Best regards from Belgium !

    The organs before CD line made it hard to recognize, what instrument imitation was intended. With the CD organ it was pretty clear, what the goal is, but the tone generation wasn't proper sampling and so a Technics was way closer to the real thing. Today the sound of a Yamaha Genos or a Korg PA5 can be so close to the original, it depends to the player only and the same is it with the accompaniments of a Ketron SD9 or Event or the other related tone modules.

    So hard to understand the investment in a 40k instrument vs. three really nice modern workstation keyboards at 1/3 or less the price. Back in the day? Sure. Now???? All I can come up with is 'traditionalist'. The all in one is really worth 30k more of an investment? Heck, one good workstation, with two additional midi control keyboards, still have you right there with a 40k instrument.

    • @StefaanVanfleteren
      @StefaanVanfleteren  3 месяца назад +1

      For a keyboard player, your remarks are 100% correct. I never understood why a keyboard player, using automatic accompaniments, needed an organ with 3 manuals and pedals. However, for a “live organ player”, the usability is very important. And that is the disadvantage of using some midi keyboards and midi pedal. For each song, you need to programme a complete different preset with all midi sounds and parameters. The advantage of the OAX series now is its usability for live playing. But again : you are right, this only makes sense if you play live and without auto accompaniments. Last but not least : some people prefer the design of an organ furniture above some keyboards. Compare it with the piano : You can buy a well sounding digital piano for 1000 EUR, but nevertheless, people buy Steinway Grands Pianos of 100.000 EUR and more ;-)

      @@StefaanVanfleteren Well, you are right that peeps can do what they wants. I will never get over the price tag though. A Steinway is hand crafted, all of it! No electronics! These organs are really just modern CPU's at the core with a ton of buttons, software vsts, and four midi control boards (three keyboards, one pedal board. There is no craftsmanship in the keyboard keys or action. It's just a big glossy keyboard stand at best!
      Now, old school PIPE organs? That is where they had quality, craftsmanship, skill, and unique experience. This nonsense? This is just taking peoples good money!
      NO WAY the electronics cost even a fraction of the the 35k. LED SCREEN? Custom layout buttons and knows? What else? I mean, there isn't 20k of software in there, LOL.
      It's another example of the excessive spending on waste and complete nonsense to show off how much money you have. It's NOT a 35k instrument! It's modern workstation overpriced by 10 times!
