    00:00 What is Life?
    00:22 Basketball to Percussive Top
    01:33 Recording Sounds with the Life iPhone App
    02:20 Using Life with New Sounds
    05:06 Export Features
    In this video, Joshua Casper introduces the Life audio plugin by XLN Audio, showcasing its innovative features. Life allows users to transform everyday noises recorded with devices like iPhones or Androids into percussive top lines automatically synced with the plugin.
    Casper begins by presenting an audio file included with the plugin featuring the sound of someone playing basketball. He then demonstrates the plugin's ability to generate percussive elements automatically. The video highlights a kick feature and explores various beat patterns, emphasizing the plugin's creative potential.
    Next, Casper provides a glimpse of the accompanying mobile app, showcasing its recording capabilities. He records a 15-second sample, assigns it a color, name, and icon, and quickly syncs it with the plugin.
    The video continues with Casper previewing the recorded sample within the plugin and experimenting with randomization to create unique patterns. He explores the variation options and showcases how users can customize the output by favouriting or excluding specific sounds.
    Casper also explores the plugin's robust rendering section, allowing users to render stems, beats, and more. The video concludes with Casper expressing his enthusiasm for the plugin's creativity and encourages viewers to share their thoughts in the comments.
    Throughout the video, Casper emphasizes the plugin's versatility and user-friendly interface, providing a detailed walkthrough of its features. Links to the plugin and additional information are shared in the video description.

    For anyone who doesn't have the cash to buy this you can do this with Logic (or any DAW) sampler and arpeggiator. Adjust the slice amounts for randomization. Air drop your field recording from iPhone recorder straight into Logic. Nice plugin!

      Nah, this has borrowed 90% of what it does from XO, added a fancier graphical interface for people that don’t really understand the depth of XO and basic semi-intelligent sample chopping. I know XO inside out and already use it to create percussive top lines. This is overpriced and over hyped. It’s not a different idea at all, but I get why you might initially think that.

    IMO XLN makes good VSTs, but there are usually two downsides, the price & the "updates",
    just wait a few weeks or months, & you'll get something similar for far less & better support.
    Like XO, it is very good, but Atlas has everything that you need & more for less than half the price.

  • @bumsybear
    @bumsybear 7 месяцев назад +2

    Just one very small detail I thought shows they put a lot of thought into this is, I'm not someone who wants to explicitly name every single recording, but I also don't want to scroll through a list of "Untitled X". They even have a title randomization feature that assigns two words that at least makes it more memorable for me when searching through. There clearly was a lot of user experience thought put into this one.

    This looks great for speeding up work flow and happy accidents, but I'm fine using logics sampler at the moment. The ability to alter the envelope & repitching each slice still makes it tempting though cause it's these small work flow things that can really unlock creativity

    • @iamYork_
      @iamYork_ 8 месяцев назад +1

      I picked it up out of curiosity because sometimes happy accidents can be the most exciting... its definitely not a magical plugin that will turn any sound you put in it into instant audio delight haha but definitely a way to whip up some fast background sounds or an additional track... I typically field record then chop up audio edits and cut into various hardware and software samplers... I enjoy it but sometimes i think to myself, especially on a rainy day, to just whip out my phone and now have the option to record something into the Life XLN app then be able to play around later... The phone app i think was the final lure to draw me in... Id be even happier if they had a full iOS app one day too... Only had it a few hours but its definitely interesting... It will probably give me an excuse to record more randomness when im wandering the streets...

  • @SoundsOfRevolution
    @SoundsOfRevolution 8 месяцев назад

    When I create sample packs for Sounds of Revolution I often use recordings from my field recorder. The setup is relatively time-consuming compared to app integration. Sure, the converters in the field recorder are certainly better - but that's not the point here. Because the dirt, the imperfection, is a great thing here to generate loops that you can also mix in. The app is a killer feature! Of course you can also I have import files from other sources like your field recorder, etc. All in all - an amazing tool!
    Cheers,
    Oli

    Excellent looking plugin - I was sad when Steinberg discontinued LoopMash, and this is the closest I've ever seen. Not the same by any stretch, but similar concept. The reliance on a third party server kills though. What happens when XLN no longer gets enough revenue from the plugin to keep server space allocated for it?

  • @onaucc9899

    It looks really good.
    I already use XO in every single project for my drums. And i struggle with interesting Top Loops / Layers, so this is something i can see myself buying.
    Can you just throw regular Top Loops in there and this thing re-arranges that in a fun and different way?
    The App integration is cool too, but i have a question about that:
    Is it 100% safe that there is not and will never, ever come some sort of subscription system that influences the usability of the app / plug or integration with each other?
    Because that would be an absolute dealbreaker for me.

    • @slingshot_uk
      @slingshot_uk 8 месяцев назад +3

      If you already use XO then you should try using a second instance of it for creating the percussion top lines. I turn XO's transport/tempo sync off and have a percussion midi part trigger it, instead of using the onboard sequencer. By individually adding sample folders to XO (rather than have it analyse your entire library as a whole) you can really benefit from the extremely powerful folder search/filter panel and restrict it to selecting sounds with certain characteristics or from specific folders i.e. folders with only top line percussive samples in.
      To mimic what Life is doing, you could have a dedicated percussion folder that you can drop chopped samples/field recordings into, re-sync it with XO, restrict XO to only use that folder, trigger it with random midi files and there you go... endless top lines.
      Admittedly this technique isn't as immediate as using Life + the companion app but it doesn't require any cloud based file transfer and it'll save you 120 Euros.

      AD2 drums sounds are actually included in XO (just search for AD2 in the filter section). You can import any percussive sound into XO. The difference between XO and AD2 is AD2 handles multi sapled drums (one snare can be thousands of layers of samples) while XO deals with one shot samples. Very different architectures under the hood. But do import your favourite AD2 samples as one shots in XO, it works great!

    WARNING! - This plugin has to be a hook. Look what I found in their terms and conditions!
    (7) XLN Audio reserves the right to impose limitations on the volume of Customer cloud storage as deemed necessary.
    The cloud will become a subscription. Space is not free. First I was interested but I knew something was off about the Cloud. Hard pass from me. No no no. Moreover, they will charge for storage all while using what we upload as the dataset to develop more AI.

    who owns the rights to the samples ? when you record your sounds - it is possible they can use it to sell AI generative loops, so i would be hesitant to input my sample sounds.

    • @astralboy
      @astralboy 7 месяцев назад

      Here is what you might want to know "might use your recordings or beats to train our machine learning models powering Life." See terms and conditions. I mean such data is gold for companies - so in the future the AI trained model can be used for generative synthesis. Basically giving your sounds free so that you can pay for it as another product in the future......this product is not for me.
