I don’t know if anyone has suggested a wall above the house, this will help prevent stones rolling down on the house, I envy your youthful enthusiasm, I wish you and your family the best
I have thought the same. Any heavy rain or earthquake could bring boulders onto the house. I personally would have used the old house for a shed, filling in the gaps in the stones, and built a new house that resembled the old, but leveling enough of the terrace to make the new house safe. ~ Have experience with old and new.
Hi, just saw your video on this big undertaking and admired the skill of your helper, who knocks down the stone and scoops it up so well in minimal time and space. And then, throws it into his truck, scoop by scoop. My suggestion ( artist household here) for finishing wall is to make it a sandstone color without replicating, again, stones. What you can do with leftover stones is make a curvy outdoor couch. All your guests will clamor to sit on. Stones used, piece of furniture for you. I visualized this, imagining your new terrace. Lovely. I so hope that you won't have to build a foundation for the new room. You have done such massive work already. I think your workmanship is excellent and so good you can keep your sense of humor. Wishing you all the luck and continual Blessings from your friend in Germany. All best wishes and love, Jean 💞
Driver is a legend. His skill, patience and care for your property makes him a valued contractor to have on speed-dial. Couple of bottles of Red coming your way. 🍷
What a humongous job. You are incredible. I miss the coffee breaks.. something about you brewing coffee with the view in the background just makes my day
Ok... I'm not even 2 minutes in and I just have to say: IDK about anyone else but I find myself longing to hear the sound of your key hit that lock in that ginormous door & the bells🥰 Dare I say it?🤔 Your place is really growing on me folks😎👌💯
🇨🇦 I have to say I am impressed with that digger driver, he is very skillful in such a tight space to work. He had it all organized in his head and did things perfect. I would render.
Ideas: root cellar to store canned goods, greenhouse to jumpstart growing season, reinforce or add more garden terraces, play house, swing set, cobblestone street, caged/walled-in areas for outdoor animals (like I’ve seen in Ireland for goats kept for milk and feta cheese making), ducks, chickens for eggs, line a pond or cistern for spring or rain water, sauna, hot tub, dog house 🤷🏽♀️
Do not break the cement, you can just make a wall layer of stones covering it. You will have a thicker wall with cement in the middle. With the rest of the stones, you can make a half-wall surrounding the terrace.
I would definitely just render over the cement wall. You have a lot of stone and the diversity of textures will make the stone even more beautiful. Great videos! I love watching your progress.
Ideas:- - Cobblestone pathways - Raised garden beds - Outdoor kitchen: stone countertops, table and benches (legs stone, tops in wood) - benches along your favourite trails, as rest stops...?
You can make stone walls at the edge of your terras. And you can make raised bed garden boxes. Let the girls paint some and make stone art around plants, trees etc. I have so enjoyed watching the process.❤
I would render that area. The reason I would is that you already have a lot of stone showing. Rendering would be a different texture and be interesting.
I am so impressed by what you're doing and by your attitude, and your family's, always positive and inspiring. Have to say, that digger guy sure knows what he's doing, especially in that area. In my opinion I would keep the new room's finish simple, it might be a bit of relief from all the stonework. I'm an elderly lady from Cape Town and I find what you're doing very brave and creative, and wish you great success.
I think that it would be difficult and dangeroue to rip away that concrete wall. I would use it as a foundation, render over the concrete and use the rocks to dry stack the other three walls. If you build a stair case in the new room up to the second floor, you provide access without taking away more footage.
A brilliant video Bradey! I think we all know that as your plans change, you and Heather have the imagination and passion to keep building. So excited to see what you’ve come up with. You are an inspiration to so many people around the world.
You should render the wall to help with the stability of the structure. There is plenty of stone work visible. There are so many things on your to do list that rendering the wall is very much a cost effective solution. Loving the channel. Stay safe J.
I think you'll live to be thankful that your first, hugely ambitious plan to dig into the mountain was scuppered. Excellent idea to create space by removing old cistern.
I enjoy watching your home transformation. Perhaps you could use the extra rocks for pathways, building retaining walls, stone driveway, a pizza oven, outdoor kitchen, a short wall in front of the house, etc
Pave your terrace - or terraces - with the extra stone. Lots of patios to enjoy the outdoor life. As for the wall, render it and get on with the project. Don’t over think trying to make it all look antique and all the same. Just get on with the home building so you can begin enjoying living there!
That new room plus terrace will be a wonderful addition. Keep up the good work. If you can widen your yard in front with the rubble, that could be very useful space. A landscape architect would know what is needed to retain it in place. Good luck and best wishes to the whole family.
can you use the spare stone to build your storage rooms you were planning on doing on the lower terraces and also possibly use it to make the outer part of the pool you were thinking of having ? some of the rocks will make brilliant raised beds for gardening to save your backs from bending over as much.
IDEAS FOR EXTRA STONE: For a future project: Set piles of stones aside on a wide area of flat land to use as a 'foundation floor' for a small pond or swimming pool, and use remaining stones to build a small pool-house by it.
Greenhouse ( floor & partial walls) out of some of the stone? OH So many ideas....Driveway, shed, patio, more steps where needed.....etc. Also for the cistern wall I would leave it as a cool affect. Thank you for sharing!!!
.......ALL dependent on being able to store/handle the material!! ..... I'm sure they've got endless uses for it.. if it was even remotely practical......!!!
I’m not sure my explanation is clear. But here goes. I would make all new room additions at the second floor level out of block or reinforced concrete. This is far less expensive and faster. You can then face the new addition with rock so it has the same appearance as the rest of the structure. Simply extend the structure and back fill. Then build second floor addition on top. You can even create a third level which would have great views and it would easier to have a taller roof line than to recreate and blend into the old slate roof. Because it will never match exactly. You don’t need to keep digging away the rock as it will become part of the backfilled first floor. By back filling you will use tons of stone and gravel so you get rid of all your waste. You save a ton of labor cost as stacking stone is slow and expensive. You can make the second & third floor long and narrow as you wish and add patio and balcony! It will also allow you to enter through the top terrace.
Ideas for the leftovers; make a gesthouse, a shed, a folley on your property. But first re-use what you can on your beautyful house. Greetings to Hether and the kids, hope they are well. 🤗
Wow. "Extra stone". Make a nice fireplace and one that you can cook in too. I know an old timer (look up cob cottage in Coquille Oregon). You can build one with an oven to the side too!
Ya know what everything is so old You can bring a sprinkle of fresh modern for the terrace, leave it smooth Your journey is also so long, pick your battles ya know Love watching🌸🌺
…Render to the cement on that cistern wall… the smooth wall will be a nice visual reprieve and give more options for interior design… like a mural 😉 Question: Will the new build provide drainage solution for the main building?
I like the suggestion made by many here crush the stone and use it for the drivable roads. Those rainy days can make it quite muddy as you have shown in the past.
Slowly but surely dear family. Soon everything will take place and form. As much of us that follow you, I'm also praying for wisdom and guidance, more ideas but most of all health and strength. God bless you guys. Thank You for sharing your beautiful journey with us.
Idea 1, build a nice size fish pond on the property using the stones as the walls. Idea 2, use the rocks as decoration around a hot tub/ pool? if you plan to add one? so it blends in :D. Idea 3, use the stones as walk ways and paths. Idea 4, if you cant build with them you could always render the new wall and place the stone like a mosaic in the render so they are still apart of the build/ extension :D. Idea 5, use the rocks as sides for the flower beds or raised beds for you to grow your own crops to become semi self sufficient.
Buy a stone house in the Italian Alps they said... it will be fun! Oh gosh, what a huge project you guys! I'm so impressed with your ability to stay focused and positive, although I'm sure there are days you may not be feeling it. Sending hugs from Vancouver Island.
I'm amazed that you have such a positive attitude. I'm just watching on line and I'm depressed thinking that something awful will happen and you will run your beautiful home. But my prayer is that it works out and eventually you really WILL be living there!
You never get rid of any materials when you’re on top of the mountain. I agree with getting rid of the concrete debris but never anything else. You’ll come up with a ton of ideas as well as future projects.
I hope Heather and the girls are ok. I’ve missed seeing them in the past couple videos. I love watching your progress. I wish I was young again so I could pick up and move out of the U.S.A. I’m living vicariously through your journey! 😊
He announced that Heather would be off camera for about a week or two because she's dealing with some emotional stuff, they'll be back and I think they have the kids in school
I really enjoy you and your families abilities to move forward and overcome new obstacles. You have great skills, patience and vision. Maybe you could build a spiral stair tower to match your new terrace. Amazing work thank you.
Thank you for my Sunday fix😊I'm watching from South Africa and I really enjoy watching you, Heather and the girls building your home. I admire your tenacity and work ethic. ❤❤
Re-render but then, the transpiration of moisture might present a problem. Andre is quite an accomplished excavator. Definitely mesmerizing. Use the stone to grind for your own use in making the roads to and from your house less muddy and boggy.
Several ideas for the leftover stone: #1-place the flatter ones or ones with a flat side into the earth of the wall just uncovered to reduce erosion, and #2-cover your driveway/road, like cobblestone or irregular stone. You can let grass grow in between.
Patio, dining table, pizza oven, and/or make a staircase with landings that go from terrace to terrace. Also, try to get some fruit trees planted-lots of Italy and Portugal families are doing that now.
Depending on how many rocks you have left over, you could create a larder, garden shed, pool house (if you build a pool), fire pit and seating area, column for a pergola. It's beautiful stone.
I ❤ the idea of rendering the wall and as someone else mentioned, perhaps a beautiful Italian mural that are in so many homes there….something different and SO many wonderful ideas mentioned…prayers, love and blessings to you all and hope Heather and the grrls are doing better after the accident! Stay strong,i love the positive attitude you have and the way you overcome problems and what could be setbacks. You turn them into something beautiful! Cannot wait to see this finished…..💖🇺🇸🌟
Build a beautiful watch tower with left over stone. I can’t believe how much rock is being cut away! I’d be so impatient, but I kind of feel the sound of the breaking away ground and rock is relaxing. So relieved you can move some of it off property. Keep on Rocking!!!!!!
I would render over the top of the wall. Not just because it’s easier but primarily because it is an “echo” of the old cistern that was there before. That cistern was solid! A whitewashed/plastered wall would be lovely.
I think render over the cement wall..... It's just not worth the grief, and it will be an internal wall so damp shouldn't be an issue. You are going to have so much stone visible, it's nice to have a contrast.
As well as used the rocks to cobblestone all the terrace in front of your house, and cobble the driveway or road, you can make a rock garden with some of the most colorful boulders, with trees and flower, meandering rock paths, stone benches - all landscaped in an artistic way!
Raised bed narrow gardens along the downhill side of the terrace, stone fences, fire pit, flooring for inside the house, driveway and terrace pavers, playhouse for the girls, stone bench seating outdoors, terrace to terrace waterfalls, water drainage to feed waterfall, pond liner, rock climbing wall.
Can’t believe the amount of time and work required to get this place livable. I understand the historical importance, but I would have bulldozed it and built anew a long time ago!
I'm curious that you just automatically assume that 'bulldozing this building and building a new one'......would be easier, less expensive... even possible, given the terrain, etc.....!!? ....I expect you could very easily end up worse off... Practically AND financially....!
All the below suggestions are superb!!! Great work! Your end result is going to be “one of a kind!” Looking forward to your next weeks video. Thank you for sharing …..
I have been watching your videos for several months and enjoy them. I've had my commercial and residential contractors license and did construction for several years. To answer your question you posed, I wouldn't waste your time trying to save the texture of the original stones, etc..Simply concrete over top of the wall, you can finish it with a texture, broom, or smooth finish, then paint it, use an Italian tile, whatever, but no need to do all the work and bring back the texture of the original stone, that's my opinion.
Yes! Cobblestone your driveway-But install drains under it first to drain away excess rainwater-or do like we do in Idaho, dig a ditch next to the driveway so the run off will be diverted and not take the driveway out during sudden storms. This “Roman road” would look beautiful 😀
CONGRATULATIONS on your Resilience and Passion for your adventurous project for your new home. Hope the family is all well and are also proud of all your visions as the come to reality. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL 👏🏻👍🏻❤️🙏🏻🙋🏻♀️🇦🇺
14:57 - 3rd option, let the wall be, and build a new wall outside it, that way you get a amazing looking wall, and you get one that is way more stable then the other options you mentioned.
My goodness do you mind if my stomach churns watching and holding my breath?….I’m gripping my armchair ……I’ll be BACK !!! For more..,don’t miss your site
Make a pond with the stones. An outdoor bbq, and a stone sauna.
I don’t know if anyone has suggested a wall above the house, this will help prevent stones rolling down on the house, I envy your youthful enthusiasm, I wish you and your family the best

What a humongous job. You are incredible.
I miss the coffee breaks.. something about you brewing coffee with the view in the background just makes my day
Thanks!! And yes, I could use a coffee break 😂
And cooking the meals, although the kitchen is down now.
Take the win. Make it easy on yourself. In the long run, a white wall will be just fine. ❤
You can use the extra rocks and put them in a rock Crusher for the roads and the paths when it rains they won't be muddy
Yeah they have enough rock to do everyone in Italy a patio & firepit 😂😂😂😂
Excellent idea.
Ok... I'm not even 2 minutes in and I just have to say: IDK about anyone else but I find myself longing to hear the sound of your key hit that lock in that ginormous door & the bells🥰 Dare I say it?🤔 Your place is really growing on me folks😎👌💯

I vote for making the job as easy for you as possible. I like how you added fun music to the scarey excavation 😊
I would definitely just render over the cement wall. You have a lot of stone and the diversity of textures will make the stone even more beautiful. Great videos! I love watching your progress.
I agree, accept the evolution of your house and incorporate the concrete from the cistern.
Oh my goodness!! Not for the faint of heart!! I admire your courage! I hope all of the rest of your family is doing well since the car accident. ❤
A small part of (painted) cement wall, might add some caracter, color and flair to your lovely, rustic house😊
You could built beautifull stairs to connect all the plateaus.
Ideas:-
- Cobblestone pathways
- Raised garden beds
- Outdoor kitchen: stone countertops, table and benches (legs stone, tops in wood)
- benches along your favourite trails, as rest stops...?

I would render that area. The reason I would is that you already have a lot of stone showing. Rendering would be a different texture and be interesting.
The drone shots make everything more clear. Thank you!
I can't imagine how beautiful this home will be once it is finished. It will be a cozy nest.

oh, and 1 more idea: use to make a stone garage to park your car in (to protect it from being washed away or pummeled by falling rock in heavy rains)
I think that it would be difficult and dangeroue to rip away that concrete wall. I would use it as a foundation, render over the concrete and use the rocks to dry stack the other three walls. Can you sell the extra stone?
Maybe you can make a outdoor patio with the stone, with pillars.barbecue pit fire pit.😊
Yes!!! MartijnDoolaard did that as a first project on the land. It came out great!!
You should render the wall to help with the stability of the structure. There is plenty of stone work visible. There are so many things on your to do list that rendering the wall is very much a cost effective solution. Loving the channel. Stay safe J.
Keep the concrete wall. Will give some contrast to all the other rock walls and will be a perfect place to highlight a special art piece.
I would just render the wall. This would give you one smooth wall surface. You now have many options for this wall surface, mural, shelving. ✌🏻❤️🙏🏻
I think you'll live to be thankful that your first, hugely ambitious plan to dig into the mountain was scuppered. Excellent idea to create space by removing old cistern.
Use the extra stone for a fabulous outdoor kitchen!!
I enjoy watching your home transformation.
Perhaps you could use the extra rocks for pathways, building retaining walls, stone driveway, a pizza oven, outdoor kitchen, a short wall in front of the house, etc
Render over! The cistern(so?) is still part of the history of the house so keeping it just adds to the story
Pave your terrace - or terraces - with the extra stone. Lots of patios to enjoy the outdoor life. As for the wall, render it and get on with the project. Don’t over think trying to make it all look antique and all the same. Just get on with the home building so you can begin enjoying living there!
Render the wall. Some different than all rock walls, and somewhere to place an armoire against, shelves or hang art. You are amazing!

Massive, massive job. You have vision. I was going to say, a day at a time but, in reality, an inch and a foot at a time.
Yay! Your terrace for the Al fresco meals Heather has been dreaming about!

Beautiful Italian Alps. What grace charm and beauty. Amazing incredible historic stone architecture. Who wouldn't dream living there...My dream
Idea 1, build a nice size fish pond on the property using the stones as the walls.
Idea 2, use the rocks as decoration around a hot tub/ pool? if you plan to add one? so it blends in :D.
Idea 3, use the stones as walk ways and paths.

First, i'm slowly becoming a part of this little family watching this renovation taking place !
I WANNA BE BUT NOT ENOUGH VIDEO OR THINGS BEING DONE TO STAY WITH THE VIDEOS.
Root cellar, stone drive way, stone walls, stone vegetable planters.
Buy a stone house in the Italian Alps they said... it will be fun! Oh gosh, what a huge project you guys! I'm so impressed with your ability to stay focused and positive, although I'm sure there are days you may not be feeling it. Sending hugs from Vancouver Island.
I'm very excited for next week. Much love to Heather and the girls!
They where in a car accident, he explained last week? Not sure, but they where pretty shaken by the experience
I second that comment! 😊😊😊
I second that emotion!
He announced that Heather would be off camera for about a week or two because she's dealing with some emotional stuff, they'll be back and I think they have the kids in school
My friend who specializes in this says oh my gosh stop don't go too close
I really enjoy you and your families abilities to move forward and overcome new obstacles. You have great skills, patience and vision. Maybe you could build a spiral stair tower to match your new terrace. Amazing work thank you.
Thank you for my Sunday fix😊I'm watching from South Africa and I really enjoy watching you, Heather and the girls building your home. I admire your tenacity and work ethic. ❤❤
Hi, I am also from South Africa, Pretoria
Hi. Johannesburg South 😊
I think a fence in front of the house of stone would be beautiful and add to the charm of the home.
Commune with the spirit of the mountain!
I love the contrast of leaving the cement wall - simple, can look like aged plaster as is found in many old Italian buildings. Good luck!
You are amazing! I love how you continually pivot, solve problems, and move on and remain optimistic. I am rooting for you ❤
I ❤ the idea of rendering the wall and as someone else mentioned, perhaps a beautiful Italian mural that are in so many homes there….something different and SO many wonderful ideas mentioned…prayers, love and blessings to you all and hope Heather and the grrls are doing better after the accident!
The guy using the excavator is talented.
I would render over the top of the wall. Not just because it’s easier but primarily because it is an “echo” of the old cistern that was there before. That cistern was solid! A whitewashed/plastered wall would be lovely.
Make it easy…your plate is plenty full. 😊

SO many possibilities gor the extra stones! The sky's the limit!
Definitely just render over the top of it. You have so much other beautiful rock walls. TBH one plain white wall would be a relief 😄
Stone walkways and patio
All the below suggestions are superb!!! Great work! Your end result is going to be “one of a kind!” Looking forward to your next weeks video. Thank you for sharing …..
I like the idea adding, a spa, or the foundation for one of the star cabins you visited. Which i believe your travels gave inspiration for ideas
I love a stone retaining wall.
Wow, those rocks would be an Archaeologist's dream😅
Can't wait to see the new build
Greetings from 🇿🇦
A lot of the old Italian homes have murals painted on walls so if you have flat wall you could do that and add some more historical flare.
Wow you guys so far has the most difficult project !! You are working so hard. Good luck with everything.
I would keep the smooth wall. It can become a focal point. Maybe an art wall
Going to be VERY interesting. I think paint the wall. Will add something different then grey stone. You all are so brave for doing this❤ BE SAFE
Oh man, how much work, but it is very satisfying to see your project getting built a little by little. Stay safe.
I hope Heather is doing better.
I would be scared out of my life that it would all of a sudden all collapse. You deserve a lovely home when it's all finished.
