Difficulty is asking a customer to give an open check book to an industry that is on the whole untrustworthy.
It’s like this because most do not educate themselves on the vehicle they purchase and then impose their issues on the shop or mechanic, estimates are estimates for a reason, once it increases it snowballs from there.
I down right refuse to allow customers to do that in my shop.
@ajchiappetta8795 and because a lot of shops are lying crooks
i agree with that statement, so when u find the right shop stick with them.dont jump around .they are out their
"On the whole" the car repair industry is NOT untrustworthy. It may seem that way if you've been burned. But reality is maybe 10-15%. Like all bad things, that is what becomes newsworthy and social media clicky. Reports of unscrupulous shops are like the Fox news clips of a gang shoplifting a Target. They play it on a loop to stir outrage and get views. Reality is that violent crime is at the lowest point in decades. But a politician comes along screaming about lawlessness that only he can fix, and people believe him. Statistics be damned.
Completely agree…you might have to look around a bit and get stuck a couple of times but when you find a wizard, stick like glue and advertise for them!
Car Wizard: I don’t give estimates
Also Car Wizard: Hoovie, here is your estimate (in every single Hoovie video)
There is an estimated time for a “job”, he’s just saying that additional things could be damaged along the process!!
Hoovie isn’t going to blow a gasket at the Wizard over additional charges.
I restore motorcycles. Had a guy tell me his bike didn’t run because of bad gas. Same gas tank liner thats in the Peugeot is in certain bikes. Whole tank has to be cleaned and re-coated. It also clogged the fuel pump, filter, proportioning valve and fuel injectors. Now a simple tank drain and fresh full is approaching $700. Happy Thanksgiving, love your content.
100% Just like a brake hose on a domestic in the midwest, touch it and the whole cookie crumbles!
Yeah once there's a issue with fuel anything in that fuel system it's likely going to have issues
On the flip side, I'm reminded of the time I had some issues with my car's AC, and took it to a shop that an acquaintance recommended. I described the issue, and the guy doesn't even get off his chair and pulled a number out of (thin air). We discussed it a bit further, the guy revised his estimate (still hadn't even gone to look at my car) and said it'd be a week before he finished the RV that was in the single bay. I politely noped my way out, saying I would probably come back later. Stopped at a different shop on my way home after work, and after a brief look, the owner said the belt tensioner was weak. Common part, he could get one in the morning, an hour-ish in and out. Done and dusted - and the guy was right. Remained a customer of his until the shop building was bought and the guy moved across town.
Hoovie is the gift that keeps on giving.... money to the car wizard.
Lol, indeed. But it is mutually beneficial. More hooptie content for Hoovie.
Wizard should be kissing Hoovie's butt daily. Two serious revenue streams because of Hoovie's Garage!!!!
@@bmwbob51 I'd say Wizard is a big reason why people watch Hoovie.
If u haven't been around long enough it might seem that way but truth is ed bolian, tavarish and hoovie all boosted tf out of wizards algorithm once he started making videos. Nowadays he's not enough to pull in his old audience but it wasn't all him@@MarkoVukovic0
Wizard gives great advice, but one piece is suspiciously absent: never say "just fix it, whatever it costs" to a mechanic.
fuck freemasonry CLOWN
Hi Wizard & Co.
Happy Thanks giving to you all from the UK.
I work on gardening machinery, and I give ball park estimates saying a service is this, parts that might be needed is this, and if I have any other costs, I'll call you.
But it can snowball. It started with a pull cord, then it needs a carb clean and gaskets, possibly a new carb as it's been sat since the cord snapped 3-5 years ago, then its fuel pipes as they're rotten because of ethanol in the fuel...
A £15 quoted job for a pull cord repair, suddenly becomes a £65+ job and the machine in good working order might not be worth that.
I do strictly free car repairs for the local churches. I started doing this because they were spending thousands and the vehicles weren't being fixed. I had one pastor call me and say he had a broken brake line. 2 properly replaced custom made lines, rear pads, caliper pins and boots, front pads, caliper pins and boots, 2 rotors, and right front hub assembly later, the car was road worthy. Fortunately I did the work for free, he paid for parts. Estimates are pretty much useless. He was grateful for the work I did and knows it was needed, but it is still an eye opening experience for people with 0 auto repair knowledge. Excellent video!!
sad how badly ppl get screwed for what shouldve been a SIMPLE one time repair... respect to you for your selfless work
Good man!
Same here. I charge for some of them, but at a very reduced rate. Enough to pay for tools and supplies.
freemasons are using you as a slave court jester, fucking wake up. all churches are satanic... thats the nwo ur all too blind to. Its behind the scenes now. It will be in your face next year. Only stupid people work for free. And those clowns have NO association to the GOD of Heavens, or our savior Jesus Christ
We never do estimates at our shop until we look at the car.
Waste of time.
Problem there is the high 'diagnostic fee'.
that is what an estimate is. you look at a car, determine the issue and give an estimate of the cost to repair,
Who buys a Lotus and doesn't have 10k sitting in a bank account?
HAPPY THANKSGIVING M
So many people will buy an exotic because they can just afford the purchase, without even thinking about the maintenance or repair costs.
a 25 year old.
It's important to know/understand which women you can afford to date. Exotic/European brands are a lot like that as well.
Me asf with my 911
In my City they give estimates, if things change they let us know. I like it like that, it gives you an idea of what you're in for.
Same here based on a certain percentage of increase. I think it might 20%.
I once had a trusted repair shop give an estimate on a job I didn’t want to do. When I picked the vehicle up they commented they wouldn’t do it for the two hours allotted again. They explained why it took them three, I knew it and even warned them because I started the job and decided I wasn’t interested in going through with it. Anyways, I offered to pay the difference and they wouldn’t take the money. I would have happily paid since they did what I didn’t want to do.
Sadly, the local shops are complete scams around here. They keep adding things that aren't needed. Rear brakes on a Jeep wrangler $880. (Just for pads.) Rear differential fluid service, $440. $2,500 for OEM shocks. That's just a small sample. How do we know who to trust?
I don't agree with The Car Wizard in all things, but I do think he's pretty honest. Those people are few and far between and most of the shops are just trying to suck as much money out of each customer as possible.
Mein Vater ran a popular car repair back in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. He told me, "You can screw someone really well once or do a lifetime of business with them and make a fortune." I really think most of these shops are extremely short-sighted and treat each customer as if it's the last time they will come into their shop. Talk about self-fulfilling prophecy.
Flat rate pricing is what it is. My local BMW dealer asks $700 per axle for rotors and pads for my car. I can do that myself with BMW parts ordered online for ~$200. They charge $150 to change a cabin air filter - that's $25 and literally six screws right there when the hood is open - it takes
Every 5 minute job is one broken bolt from a 2 day job. In my 30 plus years as a heavy truck mechanic I've heard that dozens of times. I've seen guys who have a decal on their toolbox and right along the sign say how much they charge and how much it goes up if they want to help. But ya I can't agree with you anymore then I already do. Ty for putting this up for people to see 👍 🇨🇦 🔧
No kidding. They need to realize that if you find a good mechanic you will go them always. I do most of my own repairs but the ones I can't I used to take to guy near me always. Then he retired and sold to master muffler now its just a joke. Will never go back. Trying a new guy that has so far been fair and his reviews are great.
Du hast recht
I wrote in another comment above - about a mechanic I discovered in 1976
I found him honest - trustworthy - reliable - fair price and good quality
workmanship.
He was born in the NETHERLANDS ( for he record )
I stayed with him fro decades - until some 3 years ago when he decided
it was becoming too much work at his age.
Way past his legal retirement age.
find a red neck lol no really find a guy in the country and use him breaks are easy we did timing set shock breaks rotors everything 200k mile toyota chassis/engine,transmission fill flush filters all tune up i mean ever thing rubbers tie rods all oils etc all of it 1800 labor
It's called an estimate revision. I've had to call customers 3,4,5 times after something is taken apart, then other problems are discovered.
Which is all I ask for from our mechanic(s). Please give me a call if something changes so I can generally understand the new issue and (usually) green light it.
That is fair.
That funky double pinion seal is OEM. I found exactly the same thing on my 07 2500 HD Chevy Duramax. Both are available through O'Reilly's. It looked really odd to me as well.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Yes the estimates always go south usually. Great video
You are so beautiful 😍 😊
60% of the time they're right all the time...
Damn, that's looks like a really nice Tahoe for an '09. Would have liked to see a full overview! Happy Thanksgiving, Car Wizard!
He should have whipped out the credit card & had the crush bearing fix! It’s a nice SUV😮
If you'll notice at the start of the video it has Texas plates on it...I live in Texas, cars don't rust out down here like they do up north.
I just had a leaking pinion seal replaced on a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. The shop told me before they started that there were two seals and one had a wear sleeve that the second seal rode against. It looked just like what this Tahoe has. They said it was a set and required them both to be changed or it would still leak due to wear on the previous sleeve.
hum seems like a sily design i ant did that one yet
That is a great-looking Tahoe. I've always loved that body style, they really got it right in the mid-2000s.
I'm glad the Viper owner is nice and understanding. I can see an owner blowing up at you saying that you should have see and known that the baffles were installed wrong.
I have zero knowledge of reworking valve covers on anything, much less a gen one Viper, but I can't wrap my head around why anyone would think putting a bead of silicone inside would be a good idea. If it's for some kind of protective reason then make removable.
But what do I know.
@@lastvestiges It's weird why anybody would do this inside a valve cover. That silicone would eventually deteriorate anyway, fall off and get into the valvetrain, get mashed up and clog oil passages.
That whole story didn't make sense to me. It appears the people who did the powder coating put the silicon in there. Did anyone contact them and ask why? Why should the customer have to buy a whole new set? Couldn't Wizard remove the silicon? It's done all the time on other engine parts. It's not a mating surface or on the outside so it doesn't even need to look pretty. And if not, why not make the people who did it pay for a new set?
@@BaltimoreAndOhioRR He said that he would have to buy another set of valve cover gaskets, not the actual valve covers. He did mention they would have to remove all the silicone before reinstalling. Cheers
@tylerwightman2315 I stand corrected. That makes more sense 😁
Back in 2010, I got a 2005 Jeep, after 15-16 months it started having a whining noise at higher speeds. Whole rear dif had be replaced, and had to wait 3 months for one to be shipped from the US to Europe. I got tired of waiting and I bought an almost brand new Hyundai and gave the Jeep to my dad. He loves it, 12 years later is still driving it.
I disagree with Car Wizard on this point.
An estimate, while not always accurate to the specific car, provides context for the discussion with the mechanic. There are always issues that can be found in used cars. An estimate can at least give a ballpark for what the owner could be liable for. I.e., now the Lotus owner knows they don't have the $20k. Maybe CW is talking about a binding agreement that limits further owner liability, then I agree with him.
Everyone does not have Hoovie's deep pockets.
2:13
Are you *YOKING* me? 😂 seriously, happy thanksgiving!
The yokes on you.
Stop egging him on, please!
he's going to find out when he puts that yoke in that he needs a sleeve too.
Car wizard’s turkey impression sounds more like Zoidberg than a turkey
A VERY SMART business MAN. 90% of my customers know me & trust me. They will ask if it is WORTH fixing & upon telling them yes or no then we take the next step. In last 20 years only 3 or 4 customers out of 1000's have fussed about price
Your use of CAPS tells me a lot
The issue is for every trust worthy mechanic there are several that will gouge you, or at bare minimum parts cannon you.
What I do is ask if things need replacing that I know don’t need it to see what the response is. You’d be shocked at how many try to nickel and dime you. One example - I had just changed a serpentine belt and brake pads about 30k miles ago (high quality pads and rotors that last 100k with my driving) and they suggested I get new ones.
I took my S550 Mercedes to the shop for the oil change and check up, they said my turbos are leaking , they need to be replaced , cost $12.000 … I took the car to another shop to get second opinion , they said turbos are fine , timing chain cover is leaking and oil is dripping down onto turbos , timing chain cover needs to be fixed , cost $6000 … upper timing chain cover needs to be resealed , it’s a DIY job , couple hours , and $100 … to be even funnier , the third guy said , timing chain cover ain’t leaking, it’s very slowly seeping, don’t worry about it , just keep your eye on it , just in case … so I got from $12.000 bill, to “don’t worry about it” in 3 weeks lol … I’ll wait for spring , and warmer weather, and I’ll do that myself , at the same time I’ll replace ignition coils, and fuel injectors , and do oil change and air and cabin filter replacement… I’m starting to learn how to work on my cars myself , just got Autel diagnostic tool today MK908 pro ll , it’ll pay for itself in no time … no more $240 diagnostic bills … DIY is way to go …
If you can afford to be lazy, you will be lazy.Good thinking on your part- I've seen horror stories working at The MB Stealer
DIY is great, I do like 99% of my own work, have for the last 30 years. But even then, things can go sideways. Recently found a bad bushing on a control arm on my Range Rover. $100 for the part and 30-45 minutes to swap it. Noticed CV boot had ripped recently. Ordered an axle (yeah, I could have rebooted it, but the axle was original with 100+K on it), should be another 45-60 minutes or so to swap it. Nope. Couldn't get the axle to separate from the hub. Believe me, I tried it all. Even took it to a friend's shop. Eventually decided a used spindle and new bearing and hub was the way to go. I have wondered since then how that would have gone if I'd taken it to a shop. At least my labor is free!
it will be gushing oil in nazi germany fashion, dont you worry. 100% engineered to fail
Auto repair shops are required by law to give detailed estimates before work starts. Certainly estimates are subject to revision as circumstances merit. So they serve to protect the customer and the shop which is why the law requires them.
_"Certainly estimates are subject to revision as circumstances merit."_ That's why they're called estimates. 🙂
...an estimate is just that...change orders exist for a reason...
Sticking to the estimate can work against the customer. We will do what is quoted on the estimate and keep our mouth shut about what we saw while we were in there.
It’s “ok” for estimate to change once u get into repair & find extra unforeseen work IF u get w/ customer & explain well & get approval. I started doing my own work because some mechanics were sloppy/ crappy or did stuff w/o calling & never called when car was done. Not all but too many times.
after an inspection. You cant just blindly tell people what it will cost, because then we lose our asses working on your shitbox cars. Its easy being the jester with the money treating us like slaves, as you dont even fucking work for a living. The law is made for the communists that wrote it. Also, fuck freemasonry. PEACE
As a small engine mechanic estimates are the worst especially for me. In my line of work 80% of the repairs cost more than it does to buy a new one so I'm always trying to find ways of making it cheaper for the customer.
I my part of town, small engine mechanics seem to be disappearing and are harder to find. I was wondering if it was because it's cheaper to replace than repair or because electric tools are replacing small engine ones.
@@patricescattolin43 You cannot get competent help- you must send them to Authorized Factory School Training-who pays for that?
And yes-the big stupid push to crappy electric junk is wrecking the repair business
Let's make China a Superpower that sends us stuff for The USA Landfills!
You hit a hot button with me on this. I have also worked on small engine eqpt like mowers, weed wackers and riders. Fortunately not for a living,. I agree most cost more than they are worth and 3x in time. Impossive to estimate until you are done with the job. I spend almost as much time finding repair info (lots of UT), researching parts, that if I charged for that would far exceed the worth. A local shop charges $100 for mower and $250 for rider servicing. That is before they fix to ensure they make enough to justify the effort.
@@patricescattolin43 It's a combination, I feel like. Local shops near me are $100/hr with a $40 deposit (aka diagnostic charge), and many no longer work on the "mass market" brands. Even if they did, they will ONLY use OEM parts which are prohibitively expensive (except many Honda & Toro parts) a lot of times. Something such as a carburetor replacement on your weed wacker turns into $150 after a 2-3 week wait, and a new machine might only cost $225. Add in any additional maintenance items, and you just walk away from the old one at that point. For a vast majority of home owners in a neighborhood, battery options will work fine to get the job done now, so people are starting to gravitate that way for actual and/or perceived benefits. I charge $40 for push mower tune ups, and repairs are anywhere from $40-50/hr plus parts/materials, but i can't guarantee a turn-around since it's not my primary job.
That looks more like a two piece seal. Very common on heavy equipment.
The inner portion has a rubber coating that seals/grips to the shaft and an outer sleeve that allows for a new surface every time the seal is changed. It's essentially like a speedi-sleeve. They fit together quite tightly and typically come apart when removed. The outer seal is the dust lip and the main oil seal is the portion that fits tightly into the rearend housing.
In my experience, wiring harness issues are the number 1 reason vehicles get lemon lawed. So difficult to find and repair when a vehicle has an intermittent wiring harness issue.
Luckily there are brand new harnesses for MGB at fair price. No brainer.
you race a car that isnt yours(the bank owns it), of course you cant pay for repairs. Every broke bitch today drives 100k cars they cant afford to repair. Has exhaust on it, and the rear diff grenades from hard launches. It wasnt crushed too far, it was patched to get that cheap fuck out of the garage.
this is why when I go in for a estimate, I always prepare for the worst. I ask the tech for a quote for what they "think" is the issue, like your original estimate on the rear dif, and I'll ask for the "what if the whole thing is toast" price also. so I know to set aside way more than the "best case scenario"
Estimates are indeed tough. It could be $1,500 to $3,000. Prepare for closer to $3,000.
Estimates are easier to formulate toward the end. Just a big job on my 2013 VW Beetle TDI that toke a long time and money($7000+) estimate was $6900+ but that was with all valves bent but only 6-8 valves. Due to a leaky fuel pump, drive belt broke and shredded it self in the Timing belt. A big mess.
It would be good to have an estimate to prepare instead of going in blind and charged $20,000. Isn't that why the mechanic asks permission to do the work so the customer can see if they can afford the repair.
@richardmullins9299 wow, nice you had an estimate to have an idea up front before the work started. Knowing going in it could be more. Estimates sould revolutionary, amazing.
It's always the higher end of the estimate 😂😂
It can be rough, if you are in a rust belt though. So I totally get that. You can literally tack on almost an hour of labor just doing just pads and rotors all around for some cars in the rust belt. I just give people a flate rate since I am in San Diego and rust really is not a factor here.
I saw an episode of Wheeler Dealers where they had to replace the whole harness and luckily they found a shop that builds these harnesses.
That's why it's called "an estimate"
Never give customer a quote. Always give an estimate subject to future findings
Thanks a bunch for this and the MG update.. I’m interested to see how it goes.. such a fun car to drive
You could legitimately do ballet between the lifts😂 Everytime I tune in there's a wealth of invaluable information.👍👍
Happy thanksgiving wizards
I wanted to get an estimate to tune up my bike at the local bike shop...the dude said...DOPE...I GOTTA SEE THE BIKE...i understand...i took it in, they looked at it, and gave me a quote
My first new car was a ‘72 MGB roadster, bought in Dec ‘72. . In ‘73Drove it from Winnipeg to Acapulco Mexico. Very nostalgic. Thank you for sharing…
i drove one once, it felt like a fucking golf kart, and it was soooo slow. No idea what you all like about em...
11.44 min. You did a great job saving an engine. No one should complain. Thanks
I would just tell the customer what it would cost to fix what they wanted, if nothing else is found. Then call him if anything else is needed.
The most annoying aspect of the ‘ phone estimate’ problem is that the customer who most adamantly demands an estimate based on his appraisal is most likely out of or close to out of money. They absolutely demand an estimate to replace the front struts, require that you match the estimate of a franchise shop, and if you don’t handle them correctly (sometimes it gets pushy) they never get the real problem (clunk noise over bumps) revealed and you get sucked into an unnecessary repair. Most of the time it’s easier and more cost/time effective to just go ahead and replace the sway bar link or control arm bushing that’s the real culprit at no additional charge rather than to explain why the now used struts are no longer returnable. Can’t tell you how many times I got blocked in by someone else on my side of the counter having given an improper estimate under pressure rather than getting around to the “What are you trying to fix?” Part of the conversation. Add to this the frustration of being criticized by your boss for not “just answering the customer’s question”……which, of course indicates laziness or confrontation on the part of the employee who knows best. Estimates given sight unseen or on another shop’s diagnosis are often the beginning of the biggest mistakes.
most people replace struts, when it needs sway bar links and bushings, maybe lower control arms, maybe uppers... consumers dont know shit 99% of the time. with no inspection, only idiots would give you estimates. You spenk 1-2k on struts and mounts and all that all around, and guess what, same noises, because you have no clue what it needs.
Very good video. Even when I do minor maintenance on my own cars, things do not work out as planned. Yesterday, I was changing the cabin air filter on my 2017 Nissan Frontier. The little vertical plastic cover over the filter opening was held on by a plastic flap that was bendable. My regular mechanic had checked this filter and told me it was dirty. As you might expect, the little bendable plastic cover hold broke off. Even Nissan knew this would happen. They had a convenient hole and notch so you could bolt the cover in if the flap broke. This is what I did. Why this was not done at the factory is pure cheapness. The plastic flap was obviously going to fail at some point. Happy Thanksgiving.
Wizard seems honest & does good work.
I have a pal with a lift, but the lift needs to pay for the footprint & all the overhead.
As an amateur, I know my limits, and a lot of cars are just built like crap.
I think estimates can be helpful but the problem is when customers. just think that the estimate is the actual price and when there's a difference in price, they flip out.
You're right about estimates. I don't know what the boss quoted for a valve adjust on that Jaguar, but everything changed when I bent that valve. That one cost me. It was 37 years ago, and it still stings. Haven't bent a valve since.
Hopefully you see this but I was wondering if/how you determine choosing OEM vs OE vs 3rd party parts? Thank you!
Happy Thanksgiving Car Wizard and Mrs. Wizard. ❤🦃
Happy Thanks Giving Wizard God Bless
I had a problem with packrats in the engine bay, peppermint oil on cotton balls in strategic locations took care of it.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Mrs Wizard, and everyone at Omega.
Mice are a menace in the MidWest. I got one recently, Nutella works like magic!🧐
A lady I know has the misfortune of having to park near a big dumpster used for food disposal. She calls saying car (1992 Civic) does not start. I go there and discover the rats have bitten the distributor wires totally in half. These are heavy copper wires. Had to replace the distributor. This is in north west Washington state. No place is immune from rodents.
When you store a car always stash bags of Moth Balls everywhere, under the hood, a couple in the passenger compartment and in the trunk
Thats why its an Estimate, its an estimated cost, when you cross that road of “oh shit this is gonna be way more than out estimate, lets call the customer before we proceed”
Happy Thanksgiving to you and the fam Wizard! 🙏🏻
I agree you can’t give a estimate until you tear it apart and see what needed to be repaired.
First you tell me you never do estimates then you tell me the estimate you gave had to be changed. Car Wizard, do you hear your own words?
what would worry me now about that Tahoe is ring and pinion wear......
I had a rear axle lock up at 60mph in a 1983 Monte Carlo because a spider gear cracked in half and got pinched in the ring and pinion....luckily it broke free and I did not hit anybody....
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and all of the great Omega staff
Most times the customer doesn't know anything. I don't . Look at an engine, but watching has started to teach me a ton.
Informative video. Thank you for educating me.😊
I dont give Estimates either, i tell them how much parts are and how much I charge per hour. I learned a long time ago to not bother as it actually Never comes near what you quoted.
Happy Thanksgiving Car and Mrs. Wizard!!
People often just aren't very smart, or have selective hearing when you tell them "this is just an estimate, we won't know how much it costs until we are DONE".
Though one thing that really ticks me off about too many shops - "book time" charging. You pay the higher of book time or actual time. But the problem is that paying mechanics based on book time is just incentivizing them to cut corners and do shoddy work to beat the book and make more money. I've had some really shoddy warranty work done in particular by dealerships. warranty book being notoriously even less generous than standard.
I assume Wizard does not do that in his shop.
Hi, just had my car in a shop for winter check here in Germany. Beside the shop offer i had some work to do i knew about, but than there was a call about worn out brake discs. So the bill was 700€ instead of maybe 300€ if it s bad. But the tyres had also be changed for new but i had an appointment at the tyre shop so this will be done later, first change to good winter tyres and than new summer tyres. So the bill is getting higher and higher. And in february the next big bill is coming because of big service with timing belt, water pump, break fuid and other stuff!
A buddy of mine lost a an anniversary edition 911 in similar circumstances. It's enough to make a grown man cry.
Happy Thanksgiving, Mr and Mrs Wizard.
"If they only had a couple hundred bucks..."
Who TF owns a Tahoe that they couldn't comfortably fill up a couple of times without breaking the bank?
the chrome wheels were more important than the truck driving, like every other clown out there. Usually drive on bald tires, grinding brakes and empty fuel tanks...
Hoovie ATM machine keeps giving.😂😂😂😂
Anytime that I took my VW CC into the shop, I was delighted when they final bill was anything less than $1,000. This guy's $400 bill would have been GREAT news for me.
Those in accuracies with estimates is why I dread taking my vehicle in for repairs. It's like going to the doctor!
Happy Thanksgiving Car Wizard. Always learn something on your videos!
it is the problem with estimates when the car isn't examined, whereas when I ask for estimates it is usually the garage has to replace the full item, so they can usually give a more acurate estimate. or an estimate for the yearly road inspection and sevicing, sometimes I do up the price myself as I want the car in tip top shape especially as I do do mileage in the car, so even things that are minor reccomendations are repaired during the annual inspection, then no need to worry about that item come the next annual inspection or during the year.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING YO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!
In Ontario, auto repair shops must provide a written estimate by law.
lol typical of a liberal place seems good but it ant worth nothing
after an inspection, not before. For an oil change yeah okay. Fuck would we lose money working on your shitbox cars for. From an ontario mechanic. We send you clowns to the dealer, so we dont have to deal with your bullshit, 99% of times
Product markup should cover most of the "extra stuff". Most estimates are pretty fatty. Not saying car wizard did this but many mechanics rack up the hours
Its why clowns like you usually get sent to the dealer.. cause you cant argue with them. Arguing with independents will get you refusal of service, called "fuck outta here"
This is a great reminder why you buy or lease a vehicle? I have a dealer, and manufacture powertrain, bumper-to-bumper! And then trade that in as soon as it’s about to end!
...proud of getting fleeced...hilarious...
@@DericAnslum I’m getting fleeced, perhaps if you’re uneducated and you don’t negotiate a terms that you agree to.. you sure can! That’s why you need to go get an education! Or you can keep paying on a piece of sh-t that keeps breaking down?
@@DericAnslum and if you actually studied the market, new cars are a lot better at this time than I used vehicle! Look at labor rates all these shops to fix the car.. I think you’ll get when you’re on the side of the road. Can’t get to work.
thats called you will own nothing and be happy. You clowns drive on bald tires, with grinding brakes, and lights on the dash, and then complain your oil change was 100 bucks, and 200 to fill the tank. And probably 1k a month in bank payments. You drive rental cars, you dont own shit
Hi, even 30 years ago engine rebuilding wasnt less cheap and these were simpler engines, without or only needed computer/controll units.
Most shops are flat rate only and it's the mechanic that pays the price.
The MGB never should have been kept in the hangar. It should have been kept in a garage under a cover
Garages have rodents too!!
leave the fking thing outside, its just a british golf kart
Happy Thanksgiving Wizard!
11:36 with the silicone on those baffles sheet at the shop that powder coated it that did that in there at fault or it was like that before, but it most likely if it was running fine before they got powder coated. It’s a shop that powder coated it unless it had some problems before I got powder coated.
And this is why being a Service Advisor is mentally one of the worse jobs ever
"Service Coroner."
If someone asks you for an estimate for an oil change, and you quote them $115.45, and then you find a leaking valve cover gasket, that doesn't mean your estimate was wrong.
The hardest problems to troubleshoot are owner induced problems. Normally they won't tell you they screwed something up and will just deny they know anything about it. Had on owner recently deny he installed an aftermarket MAF on his BMW. He brought the car to me because the transmission wasn't shifting properly and a check engine light. When I looked at the codes I saw several codes for MAF, fuel trims and Bank 1 Bank 2 fuel/lean codes. When I looked at the codes and then pulled the MAF it was a Amazon knock off made in China. He denied putting it on in the car. He forgot to take the empty box out of the trunk. We installed the correct MAF and the car was cured. I put the aftermarket MAF back in the Amazon box in his trunk.
It's supposed to have the sleeve.
The zoom out on Hoovies hellcat got me. 🤣
*Just a few fun facts*
The owner of the 2009 Tahoe may want to read this…
Quite often a whining noise while driving at higher speeds can be an indication of a differential issue. A whining noise that increases with speed associated with a pinion seal leak is an indication of faulty pinion bearings or ring/pinion gear mating surface damage. Curious if the pinion was checked for lateral movement before removing the flange(yoke)… that would have indicated a problem with the pinion bearings. Could have revised the estimate before taking anything apart. Though after hearing you say the “crush collar sets the teeth gear lash”, I definitely don’t want you touching any differential of mine.
Also, the strange rubber piece on the old pinion flange(yoke) is a dust seal. The new flange doesn’t have that because it’s not a factory flange, it’s an aftermarket from autozone, Napa, one of them. Every factory pinion flange on every Tahoe, Silverado, Sierra, Suburban, Yukon, on a wide range of years will look exactly the same way. Additionally, the “speedy sleeve” you pointed out is not a speedy sleeve, that’s the factory design of the flange. “Terrible job” done by the engineers at General Motors I guess. If you don’t believe me, a simple google search for a 2009 Tahoe rear pinion flange will show you the identical flange you removed from the vehicle in the video.
I agree, estimates are hard to abide by. What makes it even harder is when you don’t really know what you are doing in certain scenarios and instead of admitting that, you make things up or give false information as you go.
Just my two cents…..
I love those part prices surprises. 😂
I am very thankful I don’t have hoovies bill 😅 happy thanksgiving
Weeeeezuhrd!
That’s a really nice looking Tahoe. Z71s aren’t too common!
I Have an mgb, hey from the 🇬🇧. Another reason for that brown in the clamshell around the wheel melting is usually a bad headlight stalk. There is no relay so the whole load for dipped and high beam goes through the stalk switch. They melt and short out!!!
The dashboards here are metal on chrome bumper cars and if you don't disconnect the battery unclipping the switch bad things happen..ask me how I know 😂
Happy Thanksgiving wizard
That's a clean Tahoe, nice wheels.
If I had Hoovies money I wouldn't worry about the repair bills. He buys cars for content.
1:57 Peugeot 505. My fam had two. 1979 Black 505 sedan, and a 1991 Turbo Wagon.
I believe what you are actually seeing is the inner part from a unitized seal. When the yoke is put in it basically presses onto the yoke like a Speedi sleeve and when taken out it will come out still on the yoke just like that. It’s an original yoke just needed the original wear sleeve knocked off
I’m a car guy and I agree with the wizard. sight unseen estimates are bad because I have had many first hand experiences where I have opened something up to fix a small problem and found bigger problems. That’s why I have a good relationship with my local mechanic. he helps me with stuff I don’t have the tools for or the the time to fix because let’s face it most of us have real life time commitments outside of cars. They charge $90 to look at it and then they give an estimate and for the price he is really through and the estimates are spot on. If you find a good mechanic it’s like finding a good barber or a doctor use them as long as they are in business because it’s hard to find a good one.
CAR WIZARD when I owned a workshop decades ago my pet hate was other workshops that ripped of female drivers because they thought they wouldn’t understand mechanical vehicles. I would always take the time to explain what was required and why and then show them the parts etc afterwards, it definitely helped my business as female word of mouth can be very good or bad for your business.
Estimating is very hard as you well know, all I would do is give a ballpark idea subject to further dismantling and inspection, because as you know things happen.
Ive had Fords back in the 90s here in Australia come in to have overheating issues fixed and once resolved the car won’t start, then to find the ignition module died while the car was sitting in the workshop, that can be hard to explain to a customer trust me, but it does happen.
The new shop I work for charges to do diagnostic for all work orders. I thought it would keep people away but instead it attracts people who actually want their car fixed right the first time.
"Can you give me a ballpark?"
One of the most annoying questions when dealing with a customer, who's car you haven't yet seen. I always wanted to tell them to go to a ball game!
