    New to this channel... I rebuild, do complete restorations to vintage electronics... but have great reservation with speaker work... the skill of electro-mechanical fitment... I immensely appreciate what you do... Thank you for sharing your skill, knowledge and experience.
    I have a pristine pair of L36 that I am rebuilding (replacing damaged pots and adding film caps) you have me now re-thinking about (against changing out) the inductors... your voice of experience rules.
    That looks like a new woofer...

    On my way to be doing a refoaming repair myself for the very first time, I am really happy with finding this video.
    I love my old JBL Decade 36's (L36). They give me just the right sound in my studio, so I'll go all the way keeping them running for the next one or two decades :-)
    I love the way You take the time to get everything cleaned up, all the details right etc to get the best result possible. I really appreciate that..
    And the detail in keeping / reusing the dust cap is such a nice touch...
    Thank You so much for doing this video.
    All my best wishes to You and Yours. Stay safe...

    I've done a number of re-foams including a couple without shimming. I got away with it but I agree it's not worth the risk. Next time I'll be pulling the dust caps and using shims. I've re-foamed a pair of LE14 woofers before and that was by far the most tedious I've done so far. JBL's glue is no joke when it's 40 years old. This video shows first class craftsmanship.

      The folks at JBL pro back in the day were first rate professionals. Our staff went there for training when we became JBL warranty in the early 80's. Before that we were fortunate to have a mentor that had worked with Western Electric, Altec, and JBL for decades. Hands on engineering knowledge cannot be replaced by software jockeys and those that think hot glue is mechanical engineering

    on my 126`s there is this... what appears to be factory hard cardboard material(like a 4pc gasket) still glued to metal frames where the outside edge of new foams will be glued to...what purpose does this 4 pc. cardboard gasket serve?, should I leave in place? or remove & glue new foam directly to metal frame?

Maybe when I get a little older and don't work 65 hours a week I can start doing these kind of things because I've always enjoyed audio systems and working on them. I have just acquired a pair of Techincs SB-2820 speakers in perfect condition but need tweeters replaced. Old ones were blown and removed and I don't have the originals. If you know a good inexpensive tweeter for those speakers, please recommend something. Great video! Thanks.

    Hi, I have a pair of used JBL Northridge E100s. Paired with a Concept 16.5, they sound good to me. While trying to solve an unbalanced sound issue, I discovered that there is no polywool or sponge inside. Further, in one of the midrange enclosures there is some foam leather stuffed inside while the other enclosure was empty. If I refoam the cabinet including the midrange enclosure, will the sound quality improve? If yes, which material should I use? Lastly, where can I get a couple of pictures or videos showing the steps and how should the end product look like?

    Great video and such attention to detail, explaining the how and why's. I've got a Paragon that's been in the family brand new since the early 70's and we've had so many hours of enjoyment and great memories. I believe the LE15A's need rebuilding and it would be my first attempt but I noticed you said maybe to practice on something else first. Do you think this is something I can handle, I mean, after watching your video I'm thinking that I should leave it to a skilled professional such as yourself. Are you still doing this ? And, how important is it to go through the crossovers because I recently de-oxed the contacts on the McIntosh components and what a difference! System sounds so good again. So I'm really trying to tune up the whole system and want to do it right as it's been in the family for 50 years and hope to get 50 more. Any input would be so appreciated as I really have no one to confer with about this tune up.

    Great video man. If my 122A is rubbing just slightly on the voice coil, could redoing the suspension like this take care of the problem? Or would it need totally re-coned? Just a hair off center and I can't stand it. Or is there a way to adjust the magnet from the back? Thanks.

    • @TheJTcreate
      @TheJTcreate Год назад

      That depends on different factors. The foam edge is just one of two suspension systems that the coil/cone assembly rely on for alignment.

    I am involved in this very same procedure with 8 - JBL LE14A's and 8 LE10A's. Where the JBL LE10A's have inverted dust caps present somewhat of a challenge. Where I am curious is: Adding glue and new surrounds, will that change the thiele and small parameters on the speakers? I am building my own cabinets in this situation, so I will obtain new thiele and smalls when I finish up the re-foam. Looking to tune the cabinets at around 32hz at around 4ft3. So each bass cabinet will be around 16ft3 and the LE10's are going to be my mid-bass drivers. Then I have other plans for the top ends. Been at this sound thing (professionally) since 1976 and love it as much now as I did then and perhaps more, but am pretty much retired and have never claimed to be a speaker tech, but I have did a few successfully and am enjoying my semi-retirement as I can work on a lot of my own "audiophile" ideas. I am also a long time electronics tech/engineer. Thank you for this video it is the most professional approach that I have seen on RUclips.

    • @texasound1
      @texasound1  4 года назад +2

      Hi Tom, Ok let;s unpack this as the talking heads say. Dust caps to lay flat inverted they have to be the correct radius, but they do not have to be inverted, it won't have much of an effect on performance. Unless your software is pretty sophisticated, don't let it override your ears. Use your ears not your eyes. Look at the JBL box sizes, tunings. Unless you use a crazy amount of glue or the wrong type that should not be a problem. I think I have cover most of the issues in my vids. Good Luck, Rock On

    I'm changing the caps on my L15's, the electrolytics are bulging a little bit and the bass on them isn't what i think they should be and they also both don't sound the same. However i couldn't find the original values in film capacitors so i'm going from a 14uf to 15uf and 28uf to 30uf

    • @texasound1
      @texasound1  4 года назад

      Yes DIY, Americans used to be self sufficient, Go for it my friend. I'm old school so I don't usually replace electrolytics with Film and Foil Caps. They sound different. In general caps are 5-10% tolerance. So 14 to 15 is what % change,28 to 30= even less. When you want to experiment changing xovers do one component at a time and compare it to the stock unit. Most of my peers are gone on to the other side or are out of business. I'll be joining them soon if I don't get some help from the speaker world. Send me some work or help build some kind of Speaker Guy site, or I'll see you guys on the other side. Until then I'll be in a van down by the river. Thanks to all for the positive comments!

    Awesome speakers, I hope to own a set someday, but In the mean time I have my L36s. I had to reform my woofers as well and I cut off the dust cap very carefully and used shims, It was my first time and they came out perfect thankfully. My JBL L36s have real wood veneer and I think they are dried out and need treatment, I can feel these fine cracks when I slide my hand over them. I’m hoping you know what I should use to treat the wood/refinish it or whatever you would call it??? They are in absolutely perfect condition and still look new and I want to keep it that way. I really love how they look and sound with my marantz 2238 and realistic lab 420. What do you recommend I do? Did JBL use a special product or recommend anything back when these speakers came out?
    Sorry for rambling on there for a bit and thank you for any help you can give me on this problem.

      Use Howard's restore-a-finish and 0000 Steele wool. Follow up with Howard's feed n' wax. The veneer will soak it right up. It'll even clean up any fine scratches.

    Somebody who used to work at the JBL factory told me they actually called the foam 'suspension' the 'compliance'. This implies it is more than just a ring of foam and its quality plays a very important role in the behaviour of the driver.

    • @texasound1
      @texasound1  6 лет назад +1

      Yes sir that's basically true. Compliance is the reciprocal of stiffness, and it is very important to the performance of the speaker. This is something most of the sellers of DIY kits know nothing about. Even more important with Acoustic Suspension designs.
