What up, Fam!?! If you have an old rusty axe or just want a fun cheap project, This is the build for you. My Viking War Axe of pillaging is just the battle-axe you need to please the gods in a glorious struggle against the hoard. Or... you know... chop firewood.

Don't worry about the stains... everyone get's orc blood on their Axe at some point :)
So fun fact: The burning in your nose from etching steel is caused by the release of the ions from your etch solution. In this case, sodium metal (which goes right back into solution if I remember correctly) and chlorine gas. Yeah wear the respirator when etching. Chlorine gas isn't fun to play with in most circumstances.
to make it "safer" I would recommend a sheath for the blade - a simple on possibly made with the scrap leather you have on hand, straps and rivets, or even just the leather and lacings. You could even decorae the sheath for that added punch, and it would protect the edge.
I think it would be awesome to make a “crafter’s kit” with hammers, tongs, saws, and other tools. I know harbor freight has inexpensive hammers that can be altered like this axe.

Wow! Great idea, the only thing I would change for my own axe would be to age-patina the head with vinegar to make it look more old-timey and less new and shiny.
Apple seed your edges for a stronger edge, it helps to prevent chipping and rolling both. Takes a while to learn how to do and still get that shaving sharp edge, but it really helps. You kind of roll the file from shallow to steep (the final angle you want) and just have to keep following that curve through your grits.
Great episode as usual. I wish I had more time to try out these things. However the love of leatherwork that you started in me takes priority.

Late to the game with this comment I know, but for consistent sharpening of knives, axes, and other sharp stuff, you could make a jig in which you clamp down the thing you want sharpened and have a board with the angles measured out and holes drilled through. Put the sharpening stone on a piece of wood, stick it through the hole and enjoy your sharp tools of pillaging!
I think Stanley and a couple other companies make it, but it shouldn't be too hard to do by yourself.

You could also dunk your steel in some ferric chloride after painting the pattern on with some nail polish to accomplish a similar result with your etching.
Lol given that you put a fire patina on the handle, just tell yourself the stains are bloodsplatter from your last pillaging trip. That is a boss axe btw, loved the video

On a side note, while the entire point of the channel is to teach people the skills to do projects for themselves, you could totally open up an online store selling various things you can craft with the skills you've leveled up.
Interesting you say that! I was thinking along those lines. Just need to figure out what exactly that would entail for an initial investment on my part. Perhaps a patreon drive might help get it started 🤔

Great video Idea! I have a cheap hand axe that just collects dust- now i have to do this to it, thanks! BTW I keep each of my leather dye bottles in there own zip lock bag, I still get gremlins but not as much as I used to and it once saved me from a HUGE mess when a cap came off after it slipped out of my hand.

with an axe you want an apple-seed shaped edge that is much more suited for chopping into wood, the easiest way to achieve that is to sharpen your axe on a belt grinder, using any of the unbraced spans of the grinder, normally on the underside of the of the machine.
Man I need to go find some of that sticky vinyl sheet stuff. Very sweet etch there dude!

@@SkillTree That raised-metal look is so satisfying, too. I made a metal bookmark in some crafting workshop ages ago and loved how that effect. Nice work with the fire, too. I've seen fire for drawing but not applying a sort of patina like that.

Tip about sharping: A vid i saw suggested (atleast for knifes) to cut a cardboard piece which has a 15 degree angle and that works for every knife you sharpen no matter the size of it! ^^

also if you want to make it even more ''authentic' you should make it thinner as woodcutter's axe or any hardware store hatchet is much more bulkier towards the head rather a fighting axe . The reason is it makes it lighter and faster to swing :) now you need a spear or try make a lamellar armor with that vegan leather and you have a viking starter set ! xD

Man, I LOVE those books. That would be DOPE. I will need to make myself a larger forge first or, at least, a hotter one so I can forge weld and get that ripple pattern😁
@@SkillTree I ment use tape to put that rippling pattern on a sword you already have to start. Then after that work with nickel steel and 01 tool steel to create Damascus steel.

Turn the file around so the teeth are cutting forward next time. Works faster and doesnt ruin the file.

Excellent work! I totally understand about the dye incident too. One problem that I have is my dyes "bronzing" I guess because the larger items I don't have enough dye to dip dye it and I put too much on. But yeah... It kills me every time. The feibings pro dyes are good but drive me insane. Do you know of a better dye? I have been apprehensive to get the eco flows... I dunno... Seems risky. Where did you get your 3 sided honer? I have been trying to find a good one for a good price.
I have only used the feibings so far. I should branch out and try different thing as well. That being said, the ecoflow gel has treated me well in the past. You just need to be quick with it because it will keep darkening areas so it's easy to end up with splotches. Thanks for watching!

Could a grinding tip on a Dremel do it all ?
I haven't had great luck using a griding tip on wood. The grit is so fine I end up burning the wood more than actually carving.
Would painters tape work for itching?
I would THINK so. Though, if it gets wet whe stickyness may let go. Perhaps electrical tape?
The fumes from the etching can b verry dangerous parts of it is clorean gass with can b very harmful so resparater and we'll ventilated space if doing it ide recommend
I'm not entirely sure but that sharp smell could be chlorine which you defiitely do not want to breathe. Table Salt is partly chlorine and electric currents are good at breaking up molecules..
Could you please make a scabbard for a sword?
I would've used the stains to spark the idea of aging it because a perfect piece of leather doesn't compliment the design ya know?

Dude been loving skill tree. But come on Clever you got to find out how to actually sharpen. Been sharpening knives and axes swords throwing steaks and everything else ever since I was a kid. I will make you a video on how to properly sharpen. For an ax yes you do need a file and a roughing Stone but it's around stone. As a former logger and a former logger son the way you sharpen that hatchet hurt my soul. LOL I'll get you something else to learn. Cool idea though using the jump starter. Awesome idea
LOL. Well, a couple of points in my defense. 1. That is not at all how I would sharpen a knife. 2. While researching different axe sharpening methods, I saw that the usual method employes a pick style sharpener but I didn't have one nore could I get one in time for the shooting. That being said, I agree, there are FAR better methods. Still, was able to get it shaving sharp! Give me SOME credit 🤣

@@SkillTree oh my good sir there are so many better methods. Please take my method with a grain of salt when I finish this video. As this is what I was taught as a child growing up. However it seems to work really well to hold a long-lasting edge. As it stands I can also use it to sharpen my straight razor that I use. It's the same basic premise as far as I have learned and in my experience. I love sharing things and I love learning. Also as an experienced locksmith your escape artist episode is next on my list. I have just been afraid to watch it as a locksmith . yes I am a long-time subscriber by the way. Thank you, deeply appreciate and love the knowledge you are imparting to others

While it would increase the amount of work I would definitely take the head off and reshape the whole thing. It always really bugs me how much metal they put on the back end of small hatchets like these, it makes them really unwieldy.
The only issue is that, for 15 dollars, I’m guessing the metal sucks. Looks great, but probably doesn’t hold an edge well
The first time I dyed leather, I spilled half a bottle of black dye on my deck. The spot is still there. It mocks me.
