@@toscadonna his death was his own fault. (1) swimming alone in the late/overcast day. (2) swimming near people fishing from the shore. (3) the water was extremely choppy, which chops up sand and reduces visibility for the shark. I’m sorry, Simon Nellist’s death was unfortunate, but he was just as culpable for his death as the shark was. All you have to do is watch that video, at the conditions, and that is literally what a “shark attack waiting to happen” looks like. You can’t ignore all the warning signs and then say it’s only the shark’s fault
@Pat Luxor the day was overcast, which is quite obvious in the video. Not even sure what you mean “no sand”. Choppy water stirs up sand which reduces visibility. 10-15 feet (which this spot probably wasn’t) isn’t deep enough to not have sand stirred up by choppy water.

I have to agree with you, Hal on the ISAF's idiotic conclusion over the classification of the attack on poor, Mr. Simon Nellist.,and left a comment on Shark Bytes' video saying as much.
Yeah I heard where the ISAF classified Simon Nellist as provoked. They said it was because he was swimming where people were fishing!!!! Stupid to me as well Hal. Great work thank you

we dont disagree, but those beaches predominantly ‘People Beaches’ should be Claimed’ for the (people) and there are means to Enforce these particular beaches for the general populace! the animals are not dumb/ignorant things , they Learn to associate dangers to their safety ! This Is my Point !
Great show Hal!!!thank you as always on the Simon attack they said because he was swimming where people were fishing and chumming that he should have known that that would draw sharks to the area. they have lost their minds.
Did they say that the fisherman was chumming ? In a lifetime of fishing this would be the first case of a guy chumming off of rocks that I've ever heard of. It's not impossible, just really unlikely. As rough as the water was there , chumming would have been pretty pointless anyway.
Another great show Hal! I admire how well you pronounce some of these beach names/person’s names. Great stories! Scary! Fascinated and terrified by these amazing creatures.
Labeling Simon's attack as provoked is really unsettling. Thank you, ISAF, for throwing shade on an already horrific incident. Utter nonsense. Good content by both you and Kristian.
The guy from ISAF literally explained this. They didn’t say Nellist purposely provoked the shark. They said the shark was provoked by the people fishing off the rocks and Nellist happened to be swimming through in the presence of a provoked shark. They didn’t go out of their way to blame him at all, but if you want to get technical about it… he was swimming alone on an overcast day, close to shore where people were fishing, the water was extremely choppy (lower visibility for the shark), and there was a very large presence of sea gulls (which are an indicator that predator(s) are nearby and a scavenger opportunity may be coming). Sorry, but he literally ignored all the signs and unfortunately paid with his life. That’s not the ISAF guy’s fault
Nobody said it is anyones fault. Please tell me what lured the sharks into the other 500 plus attacks covered so far…. Some have mentions of dead whales. fishing, chumming. Even many that blame cage diving. If it is a shark not known to frequent shallows then there is a question as to why it was there. Todays ISAF and GSAF look for any excuses for their bias to pr for sharks. Total garbage
I don't like or dislike peoples catchphrases, some are dumb, some funny, but I think ole Hal has THE all time highest quality catchphrase. I'll watch the whole episode just to see it. in the 80s i remember learning to water ski in Catalina Island, the Isthmus, 4th of July Bay. Falling was the worst, floating by ship rock, hoping they come an get you soon.
Among other things, Hal's assessments usually are in lock-step with facts about sharks. So many of these RUclips videos are melodramatic horse manure. And o yeah, a thousand years ago (almost! lol) I received a Ph.D. in biological oceanography. My works was on corals, not sharks, but I did learn a little about them!
back in that day folks were not baiting sharks like they do today as well as cage diving and the like , but fishermen fished and took what they caught away from ‘people beaches’ !
Hal, have you looked at the attack of Henry Bource at Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia? He made a film called “Savage Shadows”, which showed him being pulled into a boat following the attack, with blood pumping out from his missing leg. It attacked him 6 times while he dived.
It bit his lower leg off, swam down to the sea floor and swallowed it and came back for a second attack that was fended off by other divers with spears. End of story
@@micheleshively8557 It did. The footage used to be on RUclips. Some people would find it hard, watching a man bleeding out on the deck of a boat. But he survived.
@@SharksHappen I went back for him 5 times. However, if you go spear fishing in Bass Strait, you’re really asking for it. I’m in South Australia and there are many beaches where I won’t go in the water. I’d rather swim in a pool anyway.
There's also an underwater photograph of him with his leg in the sharks mouth, right? I saw a video about him with footage of the attack and then again on the boat. It was really creepy.

You go in the water, you're interacting with wildlife in ways you don't even realise or understand. It amazes me how few people actually get attacked; the noise they make and the things they get up to, etc.

Hal, you're still my favorite YT channel and I still watch every episode. Most within hours of release. Just a lil comment for the algorithm from a sub since the beginning

I love Sharks they so misunderstood. I would love you to do a video on the famous Rodney Fox, conservationist, survivor of an attack by a great white shark. The man who invented the first Shark Cage. 🦈
Really good episode Hal, thanks ...Wow I just listened to "final Affliction" apparently in 1963 a diver was attacked, he lost his leg but survived...some believe that before he went into the water he was petting a dog, and the shark was attracted to that scent ... that's possible?
Yes. Bource was petting a dog before entering the water, but others saw that shark submerge to go after him from 20 yards or so away. I dont think the scent had anything to do with it.
Hal.....tons of new pictures and videos! After supper and chores are done, I grab a snack to sit back and enjoy/watch your videos when new ones come up. Please keep them coming....Also, grabbing as many 'shorts' to see to help your channel. A big thank you!! 🥰☺
Provoked? What'd he say, _"My clownfish has bigger cojones' than you and your cousin was delicious." "Hal said to go fu**..."_ Uhh, moving along. Are we expected to survey the beaches for fishing activity? What's the safe range? What if they left 15 minutes before you arrived? A bloke's enjoying an afternoon fishing but his actions, unwittingly, have lured a hungry shark towards the river mouth you presently swimming in. Due to an absurd classification, the connotation is it was his own doing. Ridiculous.
Ah yes, whenever I hear that opening theme song, I think of Sharks Happen. I think it has been firmly established as your channel's theme. As to the attacks... It always amazes me that there are men with enough guts to actually swim or paddle their boards TOWARD an attack in an attempt to aid a victim. I don't know if I would be able to do so. I'd like to think I would but then again I don't go more than ankle deep into the water. I have faced down a mugger with a gun to allow my woman to run for her life without hesitation on my part... but sharks? Nah. No way. 🤣🤣🤣 Edit: That guy got chewed up. I am surprised such an attack didn't remove flesh. Could have been a juvenile Great White. Those sub 10 foot Great Whites still feed on fish mostly. There was another attack by a small White and did something similar in an earlier video if I recall correctly. Could have been a small Bull Shark, but even if it was territorial, something should have been removed, no? I've not heard of too many if any attacks by bulls that had no tissue removed. Also, RIP that woman's paddle board. If I was paid a fuck ton, I would dive, but I would NEVER go down without at least one guy down there to watch my back with spears as I did my work at the bottom. Ideally would only go down with TWO dive buddies to keep me alive as I work. No way I'd ever go down without a guard. Not even with another guy down there doing what I am doing because they would be occupied and not watching our backs. As to the attacks in Florida... Wasn't a young girl on a body board killed by a bull shark that kept trying to finish the job the whole way in forcing the lifeguard to have to fight the bastard off the whole way? She died of her massive injuries if I recall. I forget her nae and the date, but it was a pretty brutal attack.
I remember the fatal attack on the girl. I don't think that attack with no flesh removal was either Bull or Tiger, because that's just not going to happen.Could maybe be a juvie Great White test biting but even then I'd say they'd be some damage. I think it's a shark that doesn't normally bite humans being territorial, or maybe had a line in its mouth? I also wondered if it could have been a hammer head looking for sting rays and this guy getting in the way?
Hi Hal! 👋 Wondering if you'll include in an upcoming vid of the shark attack in Swan River, Perth, Australia on Stella Berry on 2/5/23. Wondering your opinion on what kind of shark. Also, hoping you'll correct your background vid Pic. In that, Robert Shaw's Pic is cut off. Only cuz he was a great actor, esp as Quint.
I just love Hal so much..love the way he tells these stories and how many details he adds in. They're so interesting to me. I love the title of "what u been eating shark" 😂 and how you say "when you go into that water remember, you are more afraid of those sharka, than that sharks are of you." That's absolutely true. I find it hilarious when ppl say sharks are more scared of you, than you are of them...🙄. I heard a marine biologist say that once on the discover channel and I remember thinking how stupid that guy is to say that, or that he is straight lying just to make ppl think there's less danger...cuz sorry, Im sure somea 19ft great white is NOT gonna be scared of floating pieces of meat, humans, splashing around at the tops of the water...they're not scared of us, is what id say. The sharks either get annoyed at us and attack as territorial, or are they just hungry and want to eat us humans, but they aren't scared of us. 😳🦈😳🦈😳🦈So I just stay out the water ..I don't feel like getting into a fight with a giant fish with a mouth full of knifes..no thanks.
Dear Hal, Just to give you some eye-witness info on the Miyako-jima attack. First, the wounds suffered: right arm was severed just below the elbow. No other limbs were lost, but there were very deep puncture wounds in the thighs. The blood loss was fatal and the surfers who were next to the victim said that a cloud of blood came up shortly after he was dragged under water. Secondly, the only reason we know it was a tiger shark is because samples and measurements from the bite mark through the middle of the board were sent to a professor at the University of the Ryukyus, who was able to identify the species and give its probable size. This event happened just after a typhoon had past the island. The turbidity of the water was high and turtles usually come into the bays in these conditions. As a side note, this was the third human fatality involving a shark in Miyako-jima between 1996 and 2000. All three attacks happened within two miles of the main port and city of Hirara. Between the town and Sunayama Beach, where this attack took place, there is also the island abattoir, although I'm not sure if their waste water used to go directly into the ocean, half a mile from where the incident took place.
That is what i figured. Massive book probably had a different source than original reporting so i figured he probably didnt lose all the limbs but was very mangled
It's crazy to me that people survive tiger and great white attacks all when you see the size of their mouths. They could so so easily do more damage then just taking an arm or leg.
I think its because they know we aren't their normal prey and don't prey on humans. Because if they did, they could do so much more damage more of the time
I was wondering if you were going to address the Simon Nellis "provoked" attack statement. I watched the Shark Bytes episode and couldn't believe that is what they're putting out there!! This poor man and his family!! Absolutely disgusting! R.I.P Simon 🙏🦋
Whatever they have to do to get back control of the narrative. The unedited video was very clear about what was happening, so they labeled it as a snuff film and shame the world into taking the video down. It's all ridiculously obvious at this point. They can't be trusted to tell the truth.
Those hookah compressors are called Quimby's that are manufactured in Australia from that era... we used them diving in American Samoa and are capable to get two divers down to 100'
Love your comment regarding the isaf "Wokism in the shark world" 👏 😂 😂. That is insane to classify Nellis's attack as provoked. Clearly they have an agenda.
It's awful basically they're saying anytime a shark attacks a person the person provoked it. It makes the categories of provoked and unprovoked completely meaningless. Total BS

They fear that if the news of shark attack in Thailand come out, tourist may stay away and don't come for vacation. The attack spot happen to be at one of the most popular tourist location in Southern Thailand. But a while later, they can no longer cover up the news, and the shark attack news came out. They could have another category such as "risky" since they don't even class guys who dive for abalone as provoked. Great whites feed in those waters and it's almost an occupational hazard. Yet Simon, merely swimming a route they use regularly for competitions, is "provoked"??!
Shark Baiting’ is so common today even unto feeding these predatory fishes that a boat is Invitation’ for the presence of (Food) !
I love how the picture hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, focus etc. is different for every SH episode, because Hal probably messed around with the camera settings and didn't go back to default. Don't change, Hal. Please.
We love your stories, Hal. 💚💛🧡
Yeah, the thing with Simon is absolutely ridiculous. It's no wonder all the data is skewed so badly.
Great show,Hal!
I was also shocked when I heard ISAF claimed Simon Nellist was a provoked attack!!
WTH?!
I think anytime there’s fishing nearby it goes default “provoked”. Perhaps because of bait? ,not sure..Doesn’t make sense, but then again a lot doesn’t 😂.
Anything to make it seem like humans made the shark eat someone and that we are “not on the menu.” These scientists have a vested interest in keeping sharks looking like angels.
@@toscadonna his death was his own fault. (1) swimming alone in the late/overcast day. (2) swimming near people fishing from the shore. (3) the water was extremely choppy, which chops up sand and reduces visibility for the shark. (4) large presence of seagulls, which is an indicator that predator(s) are present and the seagulls are looking to scavenge. And this one doesn’t really count, but (5) it’s Australia.
@@ourcorrectopinions6824 sharks are indeed quite dangerous and I think anyone with any common sense would chuckle at nonsense like “sharks don’t like the taste of people” or “you’ve got a better chance of being struck by lightning than being bitten by a shark”. But that still doesn’t change the fact that Nellist pretty much ignored every flashing warning sign that it was probably not a good day to be swimming.
I have to agree with you, Hal on the ISAF's idiotic conclusion over the classification of the attack on poor, Mr. Simon Nellist.,and left a comment on Shark Bytes' video saying as much.
This is why unless it's in a pool then don't bother inviting me to go swimming. I'm not even setting foot in a dam pond.
Hal’s the Mr.Rogers of shark attacks
John Mooney's head... sounds like the title of a punk rock band. Great video thanks.
Lol
Yeah I heard where the ISAF classified Simon Nellist as provoked. They said it was because he was swimming where people were fishing!!!! Stupid to me as well Hal. Great work thank you
I so enjoy listening to your stories about shark attacks keep up the good work
Hal, you are awesome! I’m sitting here watching this latest video drinking coffee out of my Sharks Happen mug and wearing my Sharks Happen shirt!! It don’t get any better than that!!
I love those mugs! Glad you like it!
What I have learned from all the recent attacks is by protecting them, they have been able to rally back. Thank goodness. I love watching them on TV, they are so important to keep the seals in check. I am 70 years old and have a deal with sharks. I won't go to their house and they won't come to mine. Lol
But don't hate me, I love the seals too. 😥
Great reply!!,,, The thing is,,, WE are supposed to be smarter than the sharks🦈🦈 !! ,,,,, To CHOOSE to go into somebody else's backyard ,, that can kill you in 1 bite ?? Sounds pretty koo koo🤪 to me !!! This New Yorker 👍♥️🇺🇲
I'm not saying sharks are afraid of me, but I have never had a shark come near my house in San Antonio.
@@heribertopadilla2558 lots of sharks off NY. Now that the waters cleaner seals too.
we dont disagree, but those beaches predominantly ‘People Beaches’ should be Claimed’ for the (people) and there are means to Enforce these particular beaches for the general populace! the animals are not dumb/ignorant things , they Learn to associate dangers to their safety ! This Is my Point !
The sea lion was directing the sharks attention to Rose.
Great show Hal!!!thank you as always on the Simon attack they said because he was swimming where people were fishing and chumming that he should have known that that would draw sharks to the area. they have lost their minds.
Yeah I can see their thinking but no way that was provoked.
Did they say that the fisherman was chumming ? In a lifetime of fishing this would be the first case of a guy chumming off of rocks that I've ever heard of. It's not impossible, just really unlikely. As rough as the water was there , chumming would have been pretty pointless anyway.
@@rottweilerfun9520 yes thats what they said i was rolling when i heard it, they are so dumb.
If Simon Nellis goes down as a provoked attack then all shark attacks should go down as provoked.
Another great show Hal! I admire how well you pronounce some of these beach names/person’s names.
Great stories! Scary! Fascinated and terrified by these amazing creatures.
Nothing anyone could tell me would convince me that that Simon Nellist attack/predation was a provocation.
Another excellent show from our main man Hal 💖 hope everyone is doing well and staying safe from shark bites!
I now subscribed to Shark Bytes 🦈 Thanks Hal I really enjoy his channel - almost as much as SH - even if it is almost 1am here 😀
Yeah 💯👍 and hey guess you could say that guy made himself an easy meal for the Huge hungry Shark would you agree with me?
I get nervous on land in Tennessee watching these videos. Thanks for posting and another nightmare. I cant relax in a swimming pool. I blame JAWS.
My day is made! A new Sharks Happen from Hal.
Hello Hal, great to see a new show. Thank you for all your hard work.❤️
Yeah 💯 Amazing show! And hey guess you could say that guy made himself an easy meal for the Huge hungry Shark would you agree with me?
Every video is better than the last. You're doing such great work, Man.
"the Mammoth book of Shark Attacks". My next read! Cheers
Thaks Hal - amazing content, style and delivery - as usual. i appreciate you
Hal, excellent show as usual. :) keep up the great work
Always stoked to see a new SH show up in my notifications. Thank you for another great show, Hal! 👍❤️
I don't like or dislike peoples catchphrases, some are dumb, some funny, but I think ole Hal has THE all time highest quality catchphrase. I'll watch the whole episode just to see it. Although the shoes are great as well. When anyone has as much passion about something as Hal does, it comes through in spades!
in the 80s i remember learning to water ski in Catalina Island, the Isthmus, 4th of July Bay.
At least they found Mooney, I guess. Great show Hal.
Your videos as usual are always amazing - loving the 20min+ ones.
Same here
Hal, have you looked at the attack of Henry Bource at Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia? He made a film called “Savage Shadows”, which showed him being pulled into a boat following the attack, with blood pumping out from his missing leg. It attacked him 6 times while he dived.
Dadgum! It wanted to eat him
It bit his lower leg off, swam down to the sea floor and swallowed it and came back for a second attack that was fended off by other divers with spears.
Hi! I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work. I enjoy listening. My boys and I have great conversations not just when we watch but daily about something related to your broadcast. You inspire all minds. Keep up the amazing job
My man Hal back at it again with the quality content!
Howdo mate.
My man, PCM back with the quality comment ! (My work here is done and my day is complete... lol).
Tiger Sharks can also consume Humans whole just like Great Whites.
@sarahmarieboulerice3134 who made excuses, Mrs ArgumentativeFor NoReason?
@Sarah Marie Boulerice that’s gotta be the dumbest comment I’ve ever read. 🤦♀️
@Sarah Marie Boulerice 20 foot fish might not ask for pernission
@Sarah Marie Boulerice 😂😂😂😂 weak right
Great White sharks rarely consume humans. Tiger sharks will consume humans.
You go in the water, you're interacting with wildlife in ways you don't even realise or understand. It amazes me how few people actually get attacked; the noise they make and the things they get up to, etc.
Seen a few vids of Sea lions/seals jumping up onto boats to avoid getting eating.
But seriously paddle boarding off an Island off the cali coast? Thats asking for trouble, am guessing that girl didnt go again.
Hal, you're still my favorite YT channel and I still watch every episode. Most within hours of release. Just a lil comment for the algorithm from a sub since the beginning
Get that chair right Hal!
I think theres a very fine line between being knowledgeable and safe as possible in the circumstances you put yourself in and......... Being made to be fearful in situations you should feel joy instead of worry!
I love Sharks they so misunderstood. I would love you to do a video on the famous Rodney Fox, conservationist, survivor of an attack by a great white shark. The man who invented the first Shark Cage. 🦈
That last segment, “Hey shark, what ya been eat’n” - Wow!!!! Could pass that for 3 years.
I think it most likely ate it fairly recent to being caught as i would think it would be crushed by other bones/coral over 3 years time. Not sure tho
Really good episode Hal, thanks ...Wow I just listened to "final Affliction" apparently in 1963 a diver was attacked, he lost his leg but survived...some believe that before he went into the water he was petting a dog, and the shark was attracted to that scent ... that's possible?
Interesting?
Yes. Bource was petting a dog before entering the water, but others saw that shark submerge to go after him from 20 yards or so away. I dont think the scent had anything to do with it.
that sealion leads that shark to the girls to get away. sneaky little seal. lol
Hal.....tons of new pictures and videos! After supper and chores are done, I grab a snack to sit back and enjoy/watch your videos when new ones come up. Please keep them coming....Also, grabbing as many 'shorts' to see to help your channel. A big thank you!! 🥰☺
Aw Hal. I love you and these story times so much ❤❤❤ keep up the amazing work.
Another great but gruesome video. ! Thanks !!
You are so funny, Hal. What is bait? Duh. We need some more Hal and Mrs. Hal stories.
I have faced down a mugger with a gun to allow my woman to run for her life without hesitation on my part... but sharks? Nah. No way. 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: That guy got chewed up.
I think I saw that on you tube the other day. I can't recall her name. It was savage, poor kid 😢
Hi Hal! 👋 Wondering if you'll include in an upcoming vid of the shark attack in Swan River, Perth, Australia on Stella Berry on 2/5/23.
Wondering your opinion on what kind of shark. Read a comment in a vid that a Perth resident said GWs and tigers may pup there too for safety. Maybe near the opening of the river from the ocean.
Also, hoping you'll correct your background vid Pic. In that, Robert Shaw's Pic is cut off. Only cuz he was a great actor, esp as Quint.
Few days ago watched your vid right before bed with hubby nearby. Next morning he told me he had shark nightmares. 😂😂😂
Great show! Thanks Hal ☆
Yeah 💯 Amazing and hey another guy made himself an easy meal lol Wouldn't you agree?
Thank you Hal, got your message and sent best address for my out of the way rural home.
Great show!
Broke my brain! Hahahahahaha
Dear Hal,
Just to give you some eye-witness info on the Miyako-jima attack.
Thanks Hal.
Last year they caught a 14 ft tiger shark off 1 of the piers in corpus christi, tx
Perfect timing mate just saw this pop up on my walk home from school
Another great show
Those hookah compressors are called Quimby's that are manufactured in Australia from that era... we used them diving in American Samoa and are capable to get two divers down to 100'
Thanks. Will remember that it is almost like the Eskimo
That sea lion probably wanted to get up on that board
Good on you Hal keep up the great work
All I can say is,,, thank god sharks don't have thumbs🤣😂🤣😂
Attacks being down to sea life using boards - people for protection is a new one to me and I believe your right.
lol i never know where he is going with his rambling love it though
To my knowledge, Tiger Sharks and Bull Sharks are two of the few shark species that will consider humans as prey.
6:15 oh no Hal not him again! 🤣🤣
Love your comment regarding the isaf "Wokism in the shark world" 👏 😂 😂. That is insane to classify Nellis's attack as provoked. Clearly they have an agenda.
It’s scary how many people are easily brainwashed into believing woke nonsense!
It's awful basically they're saying anytime a shark attacks a person the person provoked it. It makes the categories of provoked and unprovoked completely meaningless. Total BS
... brutally blunt, Hal ! Tell it, man. I can dig it
Eaten alive
Hal,my man! More shark stories!
Thanks Hal, for another great video!
poor john mooney, i didnt mean to laugh at the way you said it.

Yeah 💯 Amazing and hey guess you could say that guy made himself an easy meal for the Huge hungry Shark would you agree with me?
Love your content, Ill need to get some more merch. Have you considered doing live streams of these stories? Im sure someone has mentioned this before.
You are really one sick dude making these videoes.
Perfectly healthy. Im sure any who would do a transparent public record of their research and analysis would also upset you.. information is bad i guess
Yah...nice to come home to...Sharks Happen👍💚🦈😏ready set go🌊
Thanks for the video Hal!
This is the only channel I make sure I get notifications from 😂 it’s my favorite!!!
The attack case in Thailand, I was working there at that time and heard of the news. At first, someone try to cover up the incident and blame Goliath Grouper for the attack. They fear that if the news of shark attack in Thailand come out, tourist may stay away and don't come for vacation. The attack spot happen to be at one of the most popular tourist location in Southern Thailand. But a while later, they can no longer cover up the news, and the shark attack news came out. There was a Thai saying "You can't cover an elephant's death with a banana leaf". This incident too big to cover up, evedent was there, witness was there, fear from the local was there. In the end the news blown up and someone got canned for that. Shark attack in Thailand is a big deal. Its very very rare, at least I never heard of one while I was working there. I heard of the old old case, like during WWII period or something, a foreign girl got attacked and killed in Chonburi(Koh Loy). In modern day, never heard of it, until this person got killed that is.
Hal love your channel . Great way to get away from everyday happy horse crap that go's on .
Sounds like the sealion tried to (successfully) divert the GW's attention away from it onto other potential prey, poor Rose... thankfully the only victim was the paddle board.
If I see a sea lion coming close Im automatically freaking out 😮
Thanks Hal!
