- Laking Batibot din ba kayo mga kasangkay? kung kagaya kita ay malamang na una mo rin itong napanood sa channel 9 o RPN 9. Yung channel na halos naging pambansang orasan na dati dahil ito lang yata yung may digital clock . Isa nga ang RPN 9 sa TV channel na naging parte na ng masayang kabataan nating mga batang 90s. What I miss about RPN9 are the american shows like McGyver, Ally McBeal, NYPD Blue and X-Files. Dito ko rin unang napanuod ang Dragon Ball Z. Ung lola at nanay ko nahooked-up sa mga teleserye ni Thalia gaya ng Marimar at Maria La Del Barrio. Iba ang RPN9 nung 90s.

My father was a script writer and floor director in various shows in RPN9 including John and Marsha, Champoy, Tanghalan, Flordeluna, Okay Ka Fairy Ko etc. I spent a lot of time as a child in the studios and the office in broadcast city. Quite lucky to have had this as part of my childhood.

Tatay ko galing ng RPN9 as cameraman for 10 years at napilitan lang mag resign nung recession. Napakaganda jan tapos daming benefits sa employees. Hindi madamot. Dahil din jan nakapunta ung tatay ko sa iba't ibang bansa dahil sa pagco-cover ng balita. Hindi bababa sa limang bansa un.

Long before cable tv and livestreaming... very simple childhood years talaga sa RPN 9.
Habang pinapanood ko ito bigla dumaloy luha ko. Ramdam ko bigla bumalik ako sa pagkabata at nakaupo sa harap ng tv namin nanonood ng batibot. Pagkatapos ng batibot ay inaabangan ko naman ang mga cartoons na kasunod nito. Pagtapos ko mapanood ang mga paborito kong palabas saka lang ako maglalaro sa labas ng bahay. Kaya lola ko galit na galit sa akin hahaha. Kasi amoy araw na ako. Salamat ka-sangkay. Kahit saglit lang kwento mo naramdaman ko bigla na bumalik ako sa panahong iyon na bata ako at buhay pa ang lola ko at tatay ko.

Sa RPN 9 umeere ang Kwarta o Kahon pero nasa SM North Edsa food court sila nag-istudio. Grabe favorite ko din ang Air wolf dati. Kahit nung nasa channel 2 na ang Eat Bulaga (bago sila lumipat at nagtagal sa Broadway Centrum), dyan pa din studio nila sa Broadcast City, same studio ng RPN 9 katabi ng Celebrity Sports Plaza. Grabe sikat na sikat yang lugar na yan dati na nasa Old Balara, QC. Dyan din newscaster si Harry Gasser na asawa ng magaling na artista na si Flora Gasser. Pang gabi si Harry Gasser at english ang news nya kaya mahirap intindihin. LoL. Napakayaman ng RPN 9 sa kasaysayan.

Kaming mga 80s kids ang palaging inaabangan ang SATURDAY FUN MACHINE ng RPN 9. Tampok dito noon ang back-to-back episodes ng SUPERFRIENDS [later became Justice League in 2001] at susunod na ang mga iba pang US cartoons gaya ng Speed Buggy, Herculoids, Inch High Private Eye, Shmoo, Funky Phantom at iba pang mga short-lived US toons mula late 70s to mid-80s. As kids we truly looked forward to Saturday mornings such as these simple yet memorable treats.

I was born in early 1980s. RPN 9 is the first channel on tv in our town those days, our tv was an old black and white tv monitor. Oh the memories of childhood! The last time I saw RPN 9 aired was around mid 1990s since abs cbn was the dominating channel that time

I loved RPN as a kid. I loved their unbubbed English shows. RPN is such a childhood memory. Naluluha ako, I remember just being a kid and enjoying their shows.
I was a fan of RPN 9 when I was young. I watched all those tv shows that you have mentioned but most especially, I became a fan of the Simpsons. I always, watch it every Friday night. The first episode that they've shown was not the very first episode in the US which was Christmas, but the episode of Blinky, the three-eyed fish, and until now, I still watch the Simpsons in its 34 seasons and 750 episodes. Because of RPN 9, I became a real fanatic of the Simpsons and I still love it! 🤩

Was an employee of RPN9 from 1987 to its last year as rpn9 2012. 2013 Solar Acquired a management contract of RPN9 now known as CNN PHILS. The glorious days of RPN 9... RPN 9 had a good share of fame feom ita programs to its talents. Some great broadcasters honed their talents in RPN9. thanks for this presentation.
I can proudly say that our programs were good. Program Content were not the same as the present set up when it comes to programming. Proud to be one of its employees.

Wala kami TV sa probinsya pero until now tanda ko parin ang tv channel RPN. Di ko nga alam na wala na pala sya. Buti na lang CNN Philippines na sya. More classy. Grabe, historic sya. Maraming 'the first' silang binigay sa Pilipinas. Dapat hindi sya mawala. I like them very innovative. No retreat, no surrender talaga in business and passion.

Part of my Childhood is RPN 9 the only channel ive watched.. so many memories i had with this channel watching late night with my whole family specially the full movies that is very unforgettable and iconic like The sound of music, Quater Back princess horror movies.. Friday is my favorite is because most of my favorite shows are there starting with Acapulco heat, the simpsons, friday the 13th series and the Amazing stories.. Mostly Christmas season also my favorite time of the year coz RPN 9 really gave something to the viewers to appreciate Christmas more specially classic Christmas animations.. thats why most shows ive search in RUclips are from RPN 9 to watch again and bring back memories... ooops i forgot to tell that this is the channel ive 1st watched telenovela which is La Traidora... and marimar

RPN had a good mix of local and foreign shows. One enjoyed John & Marsha, Superstar, Flordeluna, Makulay na Daigdig ni Nora, Eat Bulaga, Heredero, Champoy, Duplex, Bagong Kampeon alongside Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman, Space 1999, Battlestar Galactica, Magnum PI, Airwolf, Saturday Fun Machine and Sunday's Big Event. Then later, they pioneerd in local mini-series like Malayo Pa ang Umaga, Cebu 1 & 2, Davao, Bisperas ng Kasaysayan. It is very much missed! 😔😢😘

It's nice to reminisce the childhood that I had with RPN9. Especially the mid 90's where they shown Ghost Fighter, Time Quest. In the late 80's I was able to watch McGyver, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battle of the Brains. :)

I grew up with RPN9, the only channel na napapanood namin kasi yun lang ang available sa lugar namin pero sulit naman ang mga napapanood kagaya ng Batibot, Eat Bulaga, Sine sa 9, Kwarta o Kahon, Wok with yan, Astroboy at marami pang iba. Yung Superstar variety show ni Nora sa RPN9 din.
Tanghali pa dati ang marimar pero nun makita ng RPN na sumisikat ang palabas ay itinapat na nila eto sa prime time...

Nakapag OJT pa ako sa RPN 9 News during the summer of 2012 before it was closed later that year. The seniority of employees were still there like Ms. Lulu Pascua. The 200 employees of the company asked then former President Noynoy Aquino to save RPN9 from going out of business but to no avail.

BTW: ABS-CBN gave RPN its old headquarters, its old TV equipment, and CBN's old channel assignment (Channel 9) when it started. Because ABS-CBN was the first to broadcast in color, KBS-9 is the first channel to debut in color.

I'd also consider Ranma 1/2 and Dragon Ball as two anime that restarted Filipino interest in anime (the other was with ABC-5, and another is with ABS-CBN). In the 80s, I also watched Astroboy, Macross, and the two Voltrons, along with GI Joe. I also caught Starblazers (Uchuu Senkan Yamato) on the channel (from IBC-13) and Voltes V (first on GMA).
I also watched shows like The Price is Right, the original Family Feud, the $1M Chance of a Lifetime, Press Your Luck, and Name That Tune. And anyone still remember Fraggle Rock, The Great Space Coaster, Rainbow Brite, and Care Bears?
RPN, BTW, also aired both iterations of Ripley's Believe It or Not (the first one hosted by Jack Palance). It also aired really trailblazing shows like The Simpsons and LA Law.
All of those programs, plus News Watch, was the reason RPN was truly "The Leader."

Fun fact: RPN aired the clinching Game 6 of the '97 NBA Finals between Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and Karl Malone's Utah Jazz in which the Bulls beat the Jazz for their fifth NBA title. I mean, I remember watching it with my mom, dad (God rest his soul), my younger brother, our housekeeper and one of my male friends.
This is of course due to the fact that RPN's sister network IBC held the rights to the NBA games back then so IBC lend Game 6 of the NBA Finals in 1997 to RPN.
P.S. RPN also aired Star Trek: The Next Generation and Full House, bud.

During the 80s, RPN was one of my go to channels.
ETC was originally a cable channel when it started in 2004. When Solar made arrangements with terrestrial free TV in 2008, C/S 9 was assigned to RPN 9 on VHF, while ETC was assigned to UHF station SBN 21. Three years later in 2011, when ETC moved to RPN 9, Talk TV took over SBN 21, broadcasting news programs similar to what its successors would air. Talk TV rebranded to “Solar News Channel” the following year. One year later (2013), Solar News and ETC switched places again, to RPN 9 and SBN 21 respectively. ETC would be on the air for nine more years, with some programs transferred from sister channel 2nd Avenue (originally a block on ETC) upon its closure in 2018. ETC, in most of its existence, was a female-oriented English-language channel with many US series and a focus on lifestyle programs, as well as original productions like Etcetera and Philippines’ Next Top Model (in the Top Model franchise) although it began acquiring Tagalog-dubbed Turkish dramas like _Her Yerde Sen_ (Everywhere I Go), _Kara Sevda_ (Endless Love, not to be confused with the K-drama that got a Pinoy remake on GMA starring DongYan), _Benim Tatlı Yalanım_ (My Sweet Lie), among others, since 2020, airing alongside acquired old Filipino movies and Filipino indie films under Solar’s library. Only last year did ETC rebrand to “SolarFlix”, a film-focused channel.

The main problem was that eventually ETC, [ETC] 2nd Avenue and JackTV (not sure if they also "created" MAXX) became redundant in a way na halos pare-pareho ang pinapalabas nila.
Sayang JackTV carried syndicated cartoons and shows from FOX Network (before FOX replaced Star Network channels), while ETC carried syndicated entertainment news like Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight and [the defunct] The Insider - nilista ko lang yung mga napapanuod ko dati sa Solar Corporation channels.
@@charliejoson9145 “MAXXX” (with the three X’s) was actually one of ABS-CBN’s cable channels, although it lasted for less than a year. They also had sports channel Balls (which once had the rights to air UFC in the Philippines), as well as Velvet, which aired mostly scripted shows from the US and Europe, although some of these programs moved to Lifestyle.
By the way, JackTV was male-oriented, while 2nd Avenue was intended for women in the A- and B- segments. There was also CT (formerly Jack City), which was also male-oriented, with shows like “Elementary”. Solar also had “My Movie Channel”, which aired mostly Hollywood films. “Inside Edition” (not on Philippine TV anymore, although I watch it on RUclips) and “The Insider”/“OMG! Insider” first aired on 2nd Avenue until its 2018 shutdown.

Great presentation bro. Very factual & unbiased. I felt nostalgic as U enumerated those very popular programs of RPN-9 during the 80's like Batibot, John n Marsha, Newswatch, Kwarta o Kahon, Airwolf, McGyver, etc.
So it appears as if RPN-9 benefited from the closure of some tv network during the Marcos administration, in particular the sequestration of ABS-CBN by the government during Martial Law. Good that U mentioned that RPN-9's owner Roberto Benedicto was a Marcos crony. I think this is really factual. Now we know why pres. Marcos facilitated the sequestration of ABS-CBN. Who benefited from the closure of ABS-CBN?

Though its a fact RPN 9 unlike ABSCBN was just that very objective and impartial in their programming segment. ABS CBN was a propaganda driven network by then communist party and then during CORYS reign as President of the country. Just look at RPNs line up. They are revolutionary and legendary. We knew all this since we campaign for thr Aquinos back in the day. My dad worked directly and alongside the eventual President Noynoy. Unfortunately instead of the country benefiting it all went downhill. Less we forget RPN also introduced us to many of the Americans movies on their SUNDAYS BIG EVENT… And their NEWSWATCH was unmarched till today with SANTILLIAN AND HARRY GASSER.

1995 when we had our first TV na black and white pa, pero dahil malapit kami sa tower ng RPN 9, sobrang linaw ng reception kaya lahat ng shows pinapanood namin.

I remember watching Wok With Yan, American Gladiators, Wheel of Fortune and other American TV game shows. Marami rin akong napanood na American movies on "Sunday's Big Event". Doon ko unang napanood yung first two Indiana Jones movies. Saturday morning cartoons. Meron din cooking show tuwing Sunday, Chinese-speaking na babae. Tsaka show ni Joey De Leon called "Apple Pie, Patis, Atbp."
