  • "The Sheik of Araby" from the movie "Tin Pan Alley" with Alice Faye, Betty Grable, John Payne, Jack Oakie, Billy Gilbert, and the Nicholas Brothers. It's rare to Alice Faye and Betty Grable kicking their heels in black and white when so much of their musical work at 20th Century Fox was in technicolor. Rarer still is to see them nearly nude with their butt cracks showing. The Nicholas Brothers steal the show with their lightning as usual, with skimpy Amazonian outfits that reveal little body fat. This number was later covered by swing master Dick Jurgens with a fabuoso over-the-top semi-parody which I hope to make available on RUclips in the near future. Enjoy! Another thing you will enjoy is the new eBook by Brian S. Alexander "Waiting for the Real World to Catch Up," now available for the Kindle ,Nook, iPad, and more! Winner of the 2013 Pursis Prize!

    It's amazing how many don't appreciate this "art" for its greatness. The great Hollywood musicals of the 1930s and 1940s... We'll never see the likes of this again. We are fortunate indeed that all this talent has been preserved on film.

      +Chandrabali Sattir One thing that added so much to those production numbers at Fox was the Studio Orchestra and Chorus they never get a mention always taken for granted. Just listen to that orchestra swing it had a fabulous sound all its own and the chorus (always refered to as 'The Heavenly Choir') added an embelishment that completed the Fox 'sound'. The chorus always was heard from nowhere as was the orchestra but as Alice says in The Gangs All Here " Where's Your Imagination". Alexanders Ragtime Band, The Sonia Henie musicals, Coney Island, Pin Up Girl etc all feature the 20th Century Fox Orchestra and Chorus the whole package, the stars, the songs, the music all a legacy from a time when they didn't swear and curse etc to entertain, and that's entertainment with a capitol T :)

      Wonderfully put Phil!
      MGM may have had the class but FOX had the sass and the razzmatazz. I defy anyone of any age to sit still when music this good starts to play. The girls were stunning, the production was top notch, in other words POW! x

    The Nicholas Brothers are always good value but the show was stolen, nay hijacked at 6.29 when Alice Faye decides to unleash her killer smile.
    In the cold and brutal world of 2015 the visual splendour of Faye reminds one of the glorious masterpieces that Nature only too rarely conjures up.

      According to imdb, what we are seeing here was actually a reshoot, because what was originally filmed for this sequence didn't get past the censors due to the harem girls' outfits being deemed too revealing.

    the dancer in the beginning is a treat to the eye, so talented, wish I could have her name!
    the Nicholas brothers? no comments to add! they get better and better each time i watch a new clip of their dancing. the ladies around had to be impressed by what they were witnessing; i sure would break character on the stage and open my mouth so wide my jaw would hit the floor😭 these brothers are the best dancers in all Hollywood's history. period. don't come with fred astaire bullshit to me.
    they're absolutely dashing and wonderful in this peculiar costume too, although i do prefer the suit they most often wore lmfao. more charming and less offensive. also, quite the comedians in here! the faces they made are just priceless!
    Alice Faye lits the screen, as always. even bette page can't quite get up her charms, although she still has a very pleasing voice and tbh dances way better than al.
    ngl these skimpy outifts shocked me, given tin pan alley is a 1940 picture💀 i guess they had to argue with some people to get this movie up.
    well, it sure is one of my favorites. can't get enough of alice+johnny romantic duo, they were made (cinematically) for each other!

    This makes me remember a movie from the 1950s, set during World War II, where a bunch of military guys are watching this film and the projector slows down and then stops at about 4:30, just after Alice and Betty start singing. These leads to a lot of angry catcalls. Of course I can’t remember what movie this is.

      It looks to me like their bras are connected to their panties by panels of sheer flesh-colored material, so their midriffs are not actually exposed. Also, there appears to be a thin dark seam running up their backsides, which also are not actually exposed. _In other words, it's a trick to make them look less dressed than they really are._

  • @kmakhlouf4387
    @kmakhlouf4387 8 лет назад +2

    Grable had way more pizazz than Faye. Alice Faye almost looks "maternal", dancing here. The Indonesian dancer in the beginning was interesting. Was it a biological female?? No reason, just wondering- and anyone familiar with SE Asia may bring up the same question. Anyone remember the 40's cartoon with the dancing female cat that its animation was modeled after this dance routine, complete with the see-through harem outfit? I cannot remember which character the cat was dancing for, or whether the character was having a mirage- but I distinctly remember it, those days when they aired very old cartoons on in the weekend mornings.

    • @tuggtaylor692
      @tuggtaylor692 7 лет назад +1

      Most would agree that Grable was the better dancer, but Faye the better singer. Composers Porter, Berlin and Warren lauded Faye as a singer who guaranteed the success of any song she introduced. The two ladies made a successful team and were friends until Grable's death in 1973. Faye was known for her graciousness and generosity. Grable admired her and often remarked that "Everyone loves Alice."
