Stators on these are notorious for going. I always check the plug on any 85-86 and make sure it isn't melted lol. First thing I test on a 1200 is the stator if I have weak spark. Have a beautiful silver 1200 I got for next to nothing. Fried stator of course! =P
I think it was 2011 2012. I was in Kansas City and I picked up a 1985 Gl 1200 With a clay title I got it from a salvage yard. Thanking I could use it for parts If and when I needed on The 1986 Gl1200 that I have I stopped bothering with they're just covered up at the storage.

Agreed, Stator is a common issue .replacing starter is no picnic either.
