Thank you JohnPaul for the very clear and nice review. I have a question about the click/rhythm of the RC-5. Is it possible to separate the click/rhythm from the loop and send it to headphones while it does not appear in the mix/output. I'd need this for my drummer to have a click his headphones. Or do I need to extend with another pedal via Midi ? Timo
The best thing about this RC-5 is that it fits so beautifully on my small pedal board with a FS-7 button switch, Boss OD1-X, and a few fx pedals. Worst thing, there is no auto save option for your loop. Saving is a pain. Really breaks that side of looping. Delibrate move to make you buy a more expensive looper. Donner's looper looks interesting with the auto save feature upon memory change.
Yeah it’s the one hung that stops the RC-5 from being a perfect one pedal looper. If it had auto-save like the donner, but keeps the high quality audio and midi features.. then it’s awesome!
I cannot get mine into overdub mode. It records with one tap and plays back with second tap, but third tap plays back again. How do I reset it? Holding it down does nothing.
Sorry I’m confused. Sounds like you are accessing overdub in that third tap what colour is the screen then you do this? Red is the initial record. Green is okay and yellow is overdub. If you have changed the pedal to just be Rec/Play. You can change it back by going into MEMORY>LOOP>REC ACTION and change back to Rec/dub from Rec/Play. Hope this helps.
That "start before loop" function seems really valuable. Am I correct in understanding that it's essentially like a "pre-record" mode that enables you to get the loop tempo going and visually you can follow the grid, then when you're ready, you can click record and it will arm the track? And you can arm it before the ending of the looped measure and for example if you were a little quick coming in with an opening guitar chord, it would record the very beginning of your strum at THE END of the loop technically? Is this like a legit super valuable feature for anybody who really wants to lock in a nice loop at a set bar? If my main concern is my loop being 100 spot on timing wise how does this looper compare to others? I was a long-time rc-3 user and liked that pedal very much but no longer have it and looking for something new. I just got a Headrush MX5 which has a nifty built-in looper but i need a dedicated 1 like I've always had. Can you pre-select the length of a loop/how many bars you're going to record and after pressing record, you could get a count-in, then have the pedal automatically loop X amount of bars? Also any idea if there's a way to send the drums only to left or right or to isolate a click track like I've read you can do on the RC-505
Hi. So.. yes it’s a super easy way to get a great loop locked in. 👍🏻 And yes you can tell it how many bars and save that to one of the 99 memories for recall. Useful. Only thing is that the rhythm comes out of both channels on the RC-5 but you can change it on the RC-500 (left/right).
Thank You JohnPaul for a great explanation, because I'm at a Nubie level, I will have to listen a couple more times because you cover so much and talk rather quickly. But thanks for getting me jump started ! Stay Safe ! hank
Hey Hank - here’s the playlist of every video I have done for the RC-5 & 500 so far for you to get your teeth into - ruclips.net/p/PLO36LpORUSaa2hQEKtoW-FyuhOBCwlfRs
Is there a way to turn off quantize? Or a way to turn off the tap tempo for imported backing tracks? I am using the RC-5 for backing tracks, and I noticed it gives it a quantized choppy sound. Is there a way to set the pedal to playback freely without it quantizing?
I dont own an RC-3 so I can’t compare them if I am honest. But I do know that that the quality of the sound and the 4 parts for each rhythm is great for customisation. 👍🏻
Hi John, I just recently got mine with its PSA adapter(BOSS). I am here for minor assistance if it's okay with you. Upon using its psa, I am very confuse in what way should I do first to turn the unit off. Am I going to unplug the adaptor from the outlet first then unplug the 1/4 cable from Output A, or unplug the output A first then the adapter.
FIRST.. turn your speaker or amp down whatever you do! Technically, think of the 1/4 jack as the on/off for the unit. Then unplug the power. So turn of events would be - speaker / amp / mixer down - unplug jack - unplug power. I with there was a dedicated switch for these machines.. but there isn’t. Anyways.. Hope that helps.
Hi, i have an issue here, When i stop the loop with a double tap, then i clear the track holding the pedal down. At this moment, the loop plays for sec and then only gets cleared. I suppose it should not sound or start the loop at the proccess of clearing the track, is this the pedal fault or is it just me? Is there a fix to this please because this is very annoying.
Hey 👋 So it’s not a fault - it’s the way the pedal is designed. 😞 in fact it’s the way the Rc1 and 3 are as well as some other manufacturers one pedal loopers are. A cheat way round it is turn the memory knob up one and then back again whilst stopped. As long as you haven’t saved that loop it will instantly go cause you are now on another memory. The other way is an external foot pedal assigned to clear or a midi foot pedal to clear. The other option is a mute switch after the looper in the chain to hit and then you can clear and you won’t hear it. I just simply use the ‘turn the memory up 1 then down 1’ option as it’s so quick.
Hello there, I want to ask if the feature a minute 2:35 ( ruclips.net/video/th8nfSRgCCc/видео.html ) of rhythm following a track is also available for RC5? Thanks in advance!
Hello Vali - so yes it can. Once you have created a loop, the RC-5 should be able to figure out what the BPM is and then by pressing the rhythm on/off button it starts. To edit the rhythm settings (different beats) long press on the rhythm on/off button for 2 seconds and then you have an entire menu system for the level, the beat, the pattern the kit you want. there are 7 kits and 57 rhythm types all with an A&B variation.
this is an overview of the pedal but I hear you. you might prefer this playlist which is everything ive done with both the RC-5 and the RC-500. ruclips.net/p/PLO36LpORUSaa2hQEKtoW-FyuhOBCwlfRs enjoy.
Welcome 🙏 Best advice is save the name of the loop. So you know which one is which. Or if you want an easy trick, record a blank loop at home for the amount of bars you need the loop to be.. then you can just overdub on top of the blank loop and you don’t have to worry about timing on the first loop! 👍🏻
Love the RC-5!!!! I have already done 99 loops!!
Wow! Don’t know anyone who has done that... until today!
That’s awesome!
Are they all ideas or full songs?
@@JohnPaulMusicUK just ideas, musical sketches :)
It’s a great ideas tool just for that reason. Ace. 👍🏻
Really well done tutorial; great info hadn't heard anywhere else (rhythm changes; nice!). Keep up the great work.
I love how the basic functionality is identical to the rc-1 and they added so much more. For me it's a seamless transition from my rc-1 to the rc-5
Yeah it’s functionally the same pedal with more features. A cool upgrade. 👍🏻
Bought last week, thank You
Hope you are enjoying it.
Any questions, let me know.

Hi, does the pedal assignment save per memory or is that global ?
I only have the FS-5u not the dual one
Is it safe to keep this powered on through a power adapter continuously?
Great review JP thanks, it's a very hefty price considering the additional footswitch, which is essential really, is an added cost
It totally depends how you play and you can get 3rd party additional pedals that are cheaper and do the same thing 😉
@@JohnPaulMusicUK cheers JP, I have the RC but without the additional footswitch it can get out of hand wiping tracks between songs

hello, the tempo modifies the signal after recording?
No. If you have the loop as ‘free’ the tempo is dictated by the length of the recording. 👍🏻

Very good and clear review, thanks!
Is it possible to go from variation A to B while it's playing?
100% yes. Best way is with an external pedal and it will even throw in a full for you if you want 👍🏻

Best way is to turn the ‘loop’ into a one shot and it should play at its intended speed.
Can you have a fill that plays as you change rhythm variation or as intro or outro? Or is that confined to the RC-10r?
Confined. It’s just a fill going from Variation A to B.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK okay thanks for responding mate.
No worries. 👍🏻
how would you describe the rc5's rhythm compare to rc3?

Yes.
If nothing is selected and you just turn it, it functions as a volume for the loop output. 👍🏻
