  • Kecal, the matchmaker, has contracted Marenka to another. He loses his fee if Jenik cannot be dissuaded from marrying her. Boehme's singing is not quite on the same level as Gottlob Frick's audio version, but his acting is really top class (IMHO).
This translation is a liberal one in order to be singable in English.

I never saw Wunderlich live, but I often saw Böhme in Munich. He was wonderful in dramatic roles (a terrifying Hagen!) but absolutely incredible in comic roles. He spread a wonderful atmosphere in the entire theater, he put everyone into a good mood just by being there. His Baron Ochs especially was in a class by itself, maybe a bit more bavarian than viennese, but no-one was complaining!

Thank you, Darren. What I meant was if this video was taken from a whole opera.

Hi Janja. Fritz Wunderlich sang the part of Jenik on the 1962 Rudolf Kempe studio recording with Pilar Lorengar (Marenka) and Gottlob Frick (Kecal). It is a tremendous recording from all involved from beginning to end. I have tried to upload parts of it, but it does not seem to be possible, for the usual copyright reasons. I believe that the video duet here with Kurt Boehme in 1966 was simply a one off. No other scenes were performed.

I am glad that you posted this again. They are both adorable. BTW - was the whole opera recorded?

Kurt Bohme did record Kezal but not with Wunderlich. There are 3 recordings in which he appeared. Of his 3 tenor partners, Schock's the most famous. I hope this information helps.

If you mean the title of the opera, in German it is Die verkaufte Braut. And the original title in Czech is Prodaná nevěsta
