The mounting support is having the effect of linear loading the dipole. Great job and very sturdy build.

I suggest the feedline goes in the bottom if you can, that can reduce the possibility of water getting into the box along the cable.
Also, have you considered designing a folded dipole for more gain for the same length? I know it's more work mechanically.
Best of luck to your 10m repeater project! I also build and maintain repeaters but none on 10m yet.

Thanks for the tips! No folded dipole - but if I can get hold of some 125 ohm coax for matching, perhaps I can convert a mid band one!

Wow, I figured there would be at least something going on. Pretty cool! This is half of your next repeater?

This is half of it. The other half - receive - will be a vertical (end fed antenna)

Have a sub. Been enjoying this channel as I get back into this field. Waiting on my Quansheng UV-K5 to get my toes wet. Been monitoring the skies with a PiAware setup for the last few years and looking to branch out into Ham. All the best from Brisbane(ish).

It probably won't matter, but I have discovered a close element like that will couple even if not connected and might be resonant on 2m. I'm looking forward to keying it.

I always wonder how accurate the modelling software is for every circumstance it investigates? I really need to do a deep dive into that rabbit hole. Nice build! The toroid is a CMC I take it? Looking forward to seeing how it performs on the bands...hope to hear you out there.

Interesting. I always worried about verticals attached near masts. I guess I shouldn't.

The last radio I owned was two walkie talkies on channel 14. That was 47 yrs ago. I want a radio that I can talk to truckers and ham operators. I drive a ton for my job all over the mid and western states. Iwant one I can use in my car.... I don't know Jack... I know so little I don't know if I sound stupid right now. Any radio suggestions?
    Thanks

Can you show the swr sweep on this, love to compare performance with your flower pot 10m dipole. Love this design though, "bunnings dipole"

Once it’s up on the tower I’ll do a sweep 👍

Nice job. I’m wondering if this would have the same kind of effect if it was a 2M antenna side mounted to a 10m tall tower.

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  11 месяцев назад

Yes, would need to experiment with the spacing a bit though out from the tower

As I understand it, this would be akin to mounting a 102" stainless whip on the bumper of a car vs. mounting it on the roof. The car will indeed change both the match and the far field pattern because the main current lobe of the antenna (at the feed point) being in close proximity to the metal of the car. That said, while it's not good engineering practice to do so, the effects of this very short brace shown in this video will have minimum impact on the radiation field. We ALL mount our antennas on a yardarm connected to our towers, so why don't we complain about the tower influencing the far field?
In FM broadcast, it is sometimes to our advantage to mount the entire string of FM bay antennas on one particular side of the tower. An example would be where the tower is on an island about 25 miles away from the mainland where the target audience is located. This is exactly the case of a station in the 1980's where the transmitter was located on Nantucket, but the main audience was on Cape Cod. The antenna bay was mounted on the North side of the tower so that the small percentage of power that was reflected by the tower would be sent towards the mainland. Even a 0.2db gain counts in this business.
PS. I use MMANA-GAL and it is very good, but it is not perfect. There are times when the models are not accurate, but one can not look a gift horse in the mouth. For accuracy, you'd need to spend several tens of thousands of dollars on the software. 73

I think EZNec is now free? But I've never used it - only MMANA-GAL.
I designed some of my 2m and 6m yagis using it and two stacked 70cm dipoles for our repeater (info on my website). It's pretty cool to tweak and play!

    Good design and build.
I thought 31 mix was better for a choke though.
