    this comment from another person on the bands video page:
    "each bar of this song has two dotted quavers, a crotchet, and two more dotted quavers. if you think about this in 16ths per bar, this equated to the notes equaling 3, 3, 4, 3, 3. a pyramid has four triangles and one square that make up the shape. this rhythm LITERALLY makes this song a pyramid "

    Pyramid Song, How to Disappear Completely, Sail to the Moon, Bulletproof Wish I Was, Codex, Videotape, Exit Music and Daydreaming are all the in the same family for me. They represent that one unbelievably gorgeous song on each album that transcends and always stands out.

    Love this song! Amnesiac as an album is so underrated. Admittedly this took a bit to grow on me but now it's such an emotional and rhythmically interesting track every time I listen.
    As always, more Radiohead would be amazing! Life in a Glass House (the closer of the album this song is on, the studio version), Climbing Up the Walls, Present Tense.

    It amazes me that there's so much strife regarding the time signature of this song. It's simple. It's in 4/4. It just happens to be phrased in a swing-type feel. Smoke up, listen, and see.

  • @KeytarArgonian

    This is an incredibly haunting and ethereal track.
    In theme, it’s inspired by the Ancient Egyptian death ritual of crossing the Nile. After Thom visited an Egyptian exhibit. ‘Jumped into the river, dark eyed angels swim with me, all my lovers were there with me (literally mummified), all my past and futures, and we all went to heaven in a little row boat, there was nothing to fear, nothing to doubt’. I think this is represented in the strings really well, it’s other worldly at times.
    But the Drums are absolutely rooted in jazz as you said.

  • @circling-girl
    @circling-girl 5 лет назад +10

    I just love this song, the ondes martenot really shines here, and Thom's voice kills me. Thom wrote the lyrics after seeing an exhibition on ancient Egypt, and the lyric "we all went to heaven in a little row boat" is an homage to the Tom Waits song "Clap Hands."
    Reaction or not, I highly recommend watching a performance of this that took place in Paris with multiple ondes martenot players. It's even more hauntingly beautiful than the studio version, imo.

  • @ThelemicMagick
    @ThelemicMagick 5 лет назад +14

    In my opinion it's one of Radiohead's most hopeful songs.
    To me, the melancholy of the music juxtaposes the promise of tranquility delivered by the lyrics. Since it's called 'Pyramid Song' (and formerly 'Egyptian Song'), I think the river Thom Yorke refers to is the river Nile, with the 'black-eyed angels' being crocodiles and the whole song hinting to Ancient Egyptian funeral rites. Perhaps Thom's way of dealing with fear of death and his lengthy depression at that time.
    The syncopation and unusual time signature (which is still debated) blend in so well with the eerie string section, simple plodding chords on the piano and Thom's unique voice. Blissful and comforting; this song helped me through some dark times.
    I do think you're ready for 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' now. ;)

      I think the black eyed angels are the figures painted in profile inside the Egyptian tombs.

    YES! What i admire the must of Radiohead is their ability to convert such complex compositions into an apparently simple song. The tempo in this song is just sick. Next time you listen to Pyramid Song try this:
    1. follow the beat of the song and listen to the "simple" piano patterns at the beginning. You'll notice they're not placed in the normal beat (keep in mind that he's playing while singing ON beat)
    2. Just follow Phil's drumming tempo.
    3. Finally, listen to it as a whole. It's like WAIT WHAT?
    Nice reaction! Please try Let Down.

    Trying to articulate the emotions that radiohead songs evoke can be challenging. My go to words are cathartic and melancholy. I don't find their songs depressing per-say, because despite the depressing topics they explore I come away feeling uplifted by listening to them.

  • @robmaddison8645
    @robmaddison8645 5 лет назад +1

    So my opinion is that the Pyramid was the resting place of the Pharaohs and the song captures the moment one dies and suggests that the whole experience of ones life streams by in a metaphysical way at the moment of ones death. A time when what we have been used to as the senses merge with the subconscious and thinking to create a full awareness of all that we have encountered, pondered and ruminated on during our life.

    I value your interpretation. To me it is thoughtful, meaningful and beautiful. Yes, I can see it as melancholic, it would be a choice of mine to be played at my funeral! Interesting for you to mention my dale eastern as there are tones from that area but that is what Radiohead are about, taking elements of other genres and mixing it and then making their own sound.
