There is no mitigation or self-fulfilling prophecy, this is the price of a specific option : a variance swap (varswap for short) on a given month. That is the variance that you are willing to give to someone in order to receive daily variances for the next month (or of course the other way around). The link with volatility is simply that the variance is the volatility squared.

They did a poor job explaining how the VIX actually works... The VIX tells you how much people are *currently* paying for insurance (puts/calls) against stocks going down or up a lot over the next 30 days. If the VIX is high, you have to pay a lot for insurance; if it's low, insurance is cheap.

The only way to use the market nowadays because of Algo complexity is options. I don't trade but live in an area in NJ known as the "Goldman getto" locally. If you're not in a seat but want to trade that's apparently the only way to do it without getting destroyed.
Best advice… when the market is volatile, just hold your cash… investing in a volatile market like this is the same as gambling.
