"I'm not here to document it, I'm here to paint it..." I love this statement! 💜
Yes!!! -Prof Lieu
same, i also like how james gurney said to "translate" it
Completely agree!
It's a very freeing statement.
I so appreciated your ode to a thistle in this video. I try to explain my love of “weeds” to people, but they rarely understand
The thistle is greatly appreciated in Scottish culture.
I know, it's so sad that people get so hung up on the word "weed". Dandelions are my favorite flower! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
What a perfect painting! Hats off. Learned a lot from your experience.
I LOVE this art vlog! excellent beautiful art you created! I love listening to how you processed the art you were creating , i love the expressiveness of your work and your vocabulary talking about it, i love the nature, the colors you used ... just everything about this video made me happy!
You are so kind, thank you for watching along! ❤️ -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
This is so beautiful and graceful ❤️ I really appreciate the voice over, sharing the thought process and way you went about achieving the end results. It showed exactly how those extra layers worked together. How the negative painting brought out so much movement. I am so happy to have seen this video and saw your art. Thank you for sharing with us 💜💜💜💜
It's my favourite one of all your videos I've seen!!! I'm deeply touched at heart!!! Clara is a true artist!!!
awwww you're so kind!! -Prof Lieu
I love this diva thistle! This video made me realize how much more effective it is to paint watercolor in lots of thin layers. You really do achieve a lot more depth and interest.
It's definitely time consuming to do the layers, but for me I find it less stressful since each layer can only do so much damage when it's that thin😆-Prof Lieu
I absolutely love the box you are using to prop up your painting. And your painting is wonderful.
Both the finished piece and the sketch are both so full of life. I learn so much from just watching you paint. More like this please!
I'm so glad! Just need to clone myself... -Prof Lieu
@@artprof .....and don't stop at one clone if you really want to get s**t done!
Beautiful narrative! A joy to both listen and watch. Thankyou for such fine work and yes, a joy.❤️🦋🇦🇺
Tysm! This video sat in my desktop for far too long...😂 -Prof Lieu
Beautiful painting. I never knew a thistle could look so pretty. Thank you for sharing
What a beautiful result! Ful of life and movement.
Hello Art Prof & friends! I love this thistle painting! (The pink is gorgeous!) AND I love the shape and textures of thistle plants & esp the flowers. It is a classic shape, like the rose (not as popular as the rose, but...) and as I'm sure you know, been used for centuries in family crests, interior design, fiber arts, fine art and so on. The thistle is one of those simply elegant floral shapes that is so pleasing to the eye! 👍
oooo I love that you pointed that out! -Prof Lieu
Wow! 😍 Those textures and colors. Beautiful!
Tysm! -Prof Lieu
Thank you for this video. I have already watched it twice and know I am going to come back to it many, many times, trying to absorb the attitude more so than the ABCs. I love the fluidity, spontaneity and expression present in both the process and the artwork. And the wisdom of the allowing...
Thank you ❤
I’m so glad this video was helpful, thank you so much for your kind words! This is my absolute favorite type of video to produce❤️ -Prof Lieu
One thing I absolutely love about watercolors is how they do a lot of the work for the artists, similarly , I use a soft chubby flat brush to do anything watercolor, it is amazing how much one tool can do for you - there is a lot to learn from observation of media and tools and I am always feeling enchanted by what I discover. i love you video!
Tysm! I was never into wc until I started doing plein air, now I love it! -Prof Lieu
Really stunning end piece with all the muted tones and then vibrancy sitting side by side/overlapping on the page. Such a wonderful process to watch. I really need to start focussing on the process rather than the realism of my end piece. I know I can do real. Congratulations to me. Now be a bit more artistic about it!!!!! Sorry, just talking to myself there. Anyhoo, thanks again.
I appreciate your self-talk, I'm in the same boat! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
You definitely captured the spirit of that thistle. ❤
Thank you for all that you do. You're a true gem my friend. stay gold
I appreciate that so much, ty!! -Prof Lieu
Stunning image. Something fresh and lively for a change.
I loved what you said about the flower’s “face” and its figurative nature. It reminded me of your conversation with Kathleen Speranza on the narrative quality of floral painting. The position of the thistle changing direction can inspire a new interpretation of the form. Brilliant bit of painting :)
Yes! I believe I absorbed many of her lessons! -Prof Lieu
I love the freedom of your style and technique. You enjoy and feel what you do.
Great painting and demonstration!
Thanks Trent! -Prof Lieu
Absolutely adore your gorgeous thistle and your exceptional process!❤️thank you so much for your thoughtful, insightful and most inspirational tutorial❤️
Tysm, glad you enjoyed it! -Prof Lieu
Simply gorgeous 🩷♥️💜❤️
Love this video and the end result! Beautiful!
Thank you so much! -Prof Lieu
What a beautiful painting ❤❤❤
Ty!! I'm glad I didn't stick with the literal colors of the thistle. -Prof Lieu
I really appreciate your deep looking into the Thistle. Wonderful teaching! I haven't tried Plein Air (yet) but after watching your process I just might ...
Nette Grüsse, Any
Ohhhhh, I love your diva thistle! I also loved seeing how you brought him to life thru the different layers, hearing your thought process and insight - thank you! Now you've also got me curious about using acrylic inks over a w/ underpainting, heh. 😀
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and perspective so much! Love the piece 😍
Great video. Thank you. I totally agree with using more colors than we can see. It always makes it more interesting and visually more appealing. When I was allowed to teach watercolor for a year people would look at me with a strange expression on there faces when I told them to use other colors in there work part from what they could see. But as soon as they tried it they were amazed.
So relaxing and absolutely gorgeous ♥️
Absolutely gorgeous 😍 I just found your channel now. Will definitely be a big fan of your beautiful art. Thank you so much for all your help and hard work 👍 ❤️ blessings from Ontario 🇨🇦 🙏
Thank you so much, welcome to the Art Prof Family!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
One of the most useful courses I took in college was a Sumi-e painting class. Learning control - breathing, posture, etc….. the techniques have become so useful for me as a textile artist. I now encourage my students to take a similar course for their artistic development.
I am blown away by the brush technique in those traditional sumi-e paintings, they are incredibly simple, elegant, and bold! -Prof Lieu
Great video and an absolutely gorgeous painting! Love seeing these, seeing how other people work is very inspiring.
Also, the intensity of those acrylic inks is breath taking. I mostly do plein air on hikes, it forces me to slow down and pay attention to my surroundings. Sadly, this means my supplies and time are very limited. While the results can thus never be as complete feeling as this thistle, it's still one of my favourite things in the world.
Only reason I was able to do the acrylic inks was because I was about 10 feet away from our cabin, normally I'm not that ambitious with supplies! -Prof Lieu
Your art is beautiful! I've learned new techniques and approaches to art. The sumi brush always looked intimidating to me. Now I want to try it. Thank you for sharing!❤
This was so beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
Ty for watching!-Prof Lieu
that turned out great!
Wow! Love this personality for sure
Thank you for sharing your process. Learned so much ❤
Beautiful! Great lesson, thank you!
Your such an inspiration for me
Thank you! In my own art journey I've been thinking about where I tend to \ want to draw the boundary between expressive and characture ( more exaggerated expression?) in my own art. For me, this nailed the balance. I so appreciate this video. ( ok, I like most the them from art prof. Really). This one and the commentary really hit home!
Awesome! And it's different for every piece you do, which is fun if you ask me! -Prof Lieu
Fantastic video and very inspiring. Thank you so much!💗💗
Fantabulous!!!
Wow 👌 👏 😍 👍
awesome painting
Beautiful!
I love the mixed media aspect of this painting! I love watercolor but sometimes feel like it needs “more” when painting en plein air. There isn’t time for the layering necessary to achieve the richness you created with acrylic ink and marker on top of the WC! Guess I need to expand my outdoor kit!
Yes, often I feel I need to boost my watercolor with gauche! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Yeah!! Your watercolor painting videos are my favorite
Yay, thank you! -Prof Lieu
What a beautiful plein air painting, absolutely love your style. Thank you so for sharing such useful tips.❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much 😀 -Prof Lieu
This is the most thisley thistle I think I've ever seen. Wonderful!
Beautiful ❤
Excellent video!
lovely!
So beautiful! I filled water brushes with acrylic ink so I can carry several colors with less weight. I can dropper onto my palette or brush on the painting. Made my pochade box from a cigar box, but I am jealous of your dynamite box.
Oh that's a great idea to put acrylic ink in instead! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
So interesting 🎉
Merci je regarde magnifique
I think it's only in formal botanical art that strict realism and exactness is important. Otherwise, it's our own interpretation and what we want to communicate as artist's that's important.
Fantastic video! This helps me to remember to not just focus on technique or creating an exact replica of what I see. How do I want my art to convey my perception? Thanks so very much!
I'm so glad! I try to remind myself of this when I'm getting too caught up in my wb technique. Ultimately, this is far more important imo. -Prof Lieu
Did I see it correctly that you mixed the ink with the watercolor ? Because thats an awesome idea and somehow never thought of that! I love how you painted hose rocks too, the color shifts are so nice!
Yep, you can mix them! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Just beautiful and I loved your personal interpretation, your emotional response to nature. May I ask what pens you were using and if they are watercolor or acrylic?

@@artprof thank you, Lauryn
I had read the description for art supplies but thought I saw markers. Thanks again.
Hilarious! Projecting the human mental condition on the thistle.
We do see the world as we are not as it is.
It's a must to narrate during editing because the constant talking would not allow any peace in painting. The solitude looks fantastic. ☮️
This just blew my mind. So vivid, alive and expressive! Love, love the result and the process.
Beautiful and very fresh!
Inspired 😊wonderful painting, you enhanced the beauty amongst the rubble and I love how you source out your subjects.
Thank you so much 😀 -Prof Lieu
Really good painting 👍🏼
Love your movement-gorgeous!
