Sooo good! Thank you, Sam. He's one lucky horse to have you bring out his personality again. I can see the difference in his eye already. Love these trainings for us to learn to always be present. These horses do tell on us.😊
Haven't seen you in a while been waiting for your decision on your mustang, he was a beautiful horse. I know you are the only one to bring him around. Hope you decided to keep him!
Have been appreciating your training sessions for some years now…so pleased to watch your professional/personal growth/development along the way…KUDOS!
It's all part of that so important first step, isn't it, Sam? Different trainers call it different things like join-up or connecting or whatever, but it is establishing and then building upon a mutual and earned trust. If you don't have it, whatever you do is on shakey ground. If you do have it, even set backs can retreat to that safe zone and you can start again.
This was super great, and I would really love to see more about working with a shut down horse. I acquired a 23 year old Paint who I have been starting from scratch with because any time we start doing something he's not a fan of he shuts down. It was super frustrating at first, but with positive reinforcement and target training he's started coming around, and our relationship has begun to grow. It's been super rewarding seeing progress in my old man! I love seeing content on a horse like my old boy, and learning new tips and tricks that I can try with my horse!
I like to see this. In a similar vein, I used to have to check in with myself if I started to feel frustrated while running sled dogs. Also, used a simple criteria before cross country skiing with my kid: "Am I prepared to make this entirely about him (and not me)"? This kind of thinking built relationship.
Thank you so much, Sam, I have two islandic horses, and one of them is so close !! I'm in Switzerland, I speak french, sorry, but I'm learning English... ☺ 🐴🐴
I would love to see more about shut down or disconnected horses. My lease horse is a very independent individual and spends a lot of time off to the side of the herd. When new hay gets brought out to the pasture the whole herd comes galloping in to get some new hay ( they're in grass). Everyone except my lease horse. He could care less. It's hard to find things that motivate him.
I have Brumbys from mt Kosciusko. I'm enjoying your work with your boy. I've a mare who is very similar in her ways. She's disconnected big time, I'm searching for ways to bring her long gently. This may be the answer. So far she's not nasty at all just so distant. Ahe would prefer to wander away and not interact with humans at all. Tho she certainly understands what I'm asking. Each horse wild or not has their own disposition i guess. I'll begin this method soon. Thanks for the tip.
I am not sure how this is going to sound and I don’t know who his previous trainers were. One thing I have noticed in general, is female trainers are a bit more easy, nurturing, and patient when they train horses vs a lot of the male ones can be a bit more aggressive and forceful. I think because horses are a prey animals they respond better to positive reinforcement and gentling. Not meaning to sound discriminatory or anything, it’s just an observation I have had over the years. He seems like he is responding to you very well! ❤️
We have a mare that is disconnected. She is an excellent work horse and is broke to ride as well but could not care less about things like petting or grooming and really is just all about doing whatever she is told so she can get back to the pasture and be left alone. Even when we bring her in with the herd daily for grain as soon as I go to take her halter off she is out. Our other horses all gladly linger for extra pats and scratches. She isn't afraid, just does not have any interest in such things. I don't need her to be my heart horse or anything, but it bums me out to think she doesn't enjoy people really at all. Is that considered a disconnected horse? If so I would love your insight and videos on how to improve that situation.
My boy is the same way. It used to frustrate me that he and I had no relationship, that he couldn't care less about me. That's when I realized that every time I took him out, I made him do things he disliked. I would ride him or do groundwork with him, but I never thought about taking a day to just do things HE liked. I realized I didn't even know WHAT he liked to do, other than eat grass! Sometimes I will take him out on a lead rope and sit with him while he eats grass outside of the pasture or just hang out and groom him in the pasture. But what has made the biggest difference in our relationship so far is clicker and target training! He gets excited and nickers at me when he sees the target stick and knows it's time to play. He used to walk the other way when he saw me coming. Now he will come up to me and ask for scratches and want to be with me. He has slowly begun opening up to me and showing me a side to him I didn't know existed. We still ride and do things I want to do too, but I've learned that there have to be days with him where I just focus on his happiness ❤️ And I've also learned that I love to work with him on these things too- teaching him liberty and target training has become rewarding for both of us.
What bit would you recommend on a horse that is pretty hard headed and will take off running and I can't stop him or anything else that would help him?? Thanks!!
When you reward a horse like this do you expect the owner to follow up with this or is it dropped off and if so does that effect the horses relationship with the owner...

Our favorite thing is watching a poor, frightened Mustang turn into a cuddlebug for Sam.❤

Sam, what a lovely chunky boy. Yes, I would definitely love to see more sessions on working with a horse of these characteristics.
This was great Sam! I have an ADD horse also named Wildfire. Watching you work with him I feel would be very helpful.
Great to see a video from you. Your the best
He seems like a sweetheart. ❤
I love your training videos, and the attention on the horse. So true about paying attention to your own mood.
Really thought provoking, thanks Sam.

I think he’s doing great. Give him an extra cookie from aunt Patty.
