- Olly Alexander is preparing to fulfil one of his biggest life ambitions - to represent the United Kingdom in the much-loved Eurovision Song Contest. Ahead of the grand final in May, Olly joins fellow Eurovision lover and commentator Graham Norton to talk candidly about competing in Sweden. As an extra treat for Eurovision fans, Olly reveals the first full play of the music video on TV for his Eurovision song Dizzy.
A Brit and Bafta award nominee, Olly is the United Kingdom’s most high-profile Eurovision act in many years. Brimming with excitement, he talks passionately to Graham about his genuine love of Eurovision, his fond memories of the annual singing contest and how it feels to represent the United Kingdom on a global stage.
The clock is ticking, and with just two months to go before Olly heads to Malmö, Sweden, where this year’s contest will take place, he is in competition mode. He and Graham, both self-confessed Eurovision obsessives, analyse the competition and run through the other countries’ acts Olly will be up against. As Eurovision gets ever closer, this special reveals the excitement and pressure felt by Olly Alexander, the artist representing the United Kingdom in Sweden on the 50th anniversary of Abba’s victory in Brighton in 1974.

What happened?
The Eurovision dislike and apathy from the UK is so surreal for me. I come from Sweden and they literary had an interval act based on the Swedish obcession with Eurovision, or rather or national final Melodifestivalen. To me, having a 6 week conversion with work/school mates of anticipation and results is just normal. It's SVT's largest show with huge ratings.

Thanks Olly just listened to Silvia Night, and quite liked the song, gave me the vibe I used to get back in the day when I would play Divine's seminal song " I'm so beautiful". It empowered me to go into the world and be myself be happy and gay.

I feel sad as a concept dizzy with your love works but it needs more expression of love from the lyrics and more content. I don’t think it’s lyrically detailed and visually dynamic to do really well. He’s a brilliant artist and I wish him well but it’s not a super strong song. The middle part is weird, he needs to do so choreography … but it will be a great experience for him

Olly's a great guy...such enthusiasm and energy. But, to me, the song lacks something...it has a flatness and is not not memorable. Nevertheless he's a great ambassador for Eurovision...

I do like a lot of Olly's/Years & Years' work - "King" especially is my favourite, and Olly is very endearing. My concern is the song - while it's nice - isn't really "big" enough as a statement. It will require the right performance and staging on the night.
I know Olly won't necessarily ever see this, but my advice to him would be: -
1. Really work on the live vocal performance well in advance with vocal coaches. Olly's recording voice is very nice, but not always frankly the strongest in live performances. Build those lungs and diaphragm up as well as doing the cardio!
2. Drama, but not _too_ much drama - show your natural personality...
3. ...BUT if he wants *success* in the competition, don't overemphasise (on this particular occasion) the LGBT themes - while Eurovision is camp and fun, many particularly Eastern European voters may not vote for a very "gay" or effeminate performance like the one with Elton John. There are other times and venues to rightfully push that side of his personality, and I'm not saying he should totally suppress himself and a bit of camp is obviously fine, but keep it in check or the votes will not mount up (now, someone is obviously going to say "what about Conchita Wurst or Dana International?" but they were much stronger live singers, _especially_ Conchita). Obviously, if he doesn't necessarily prioritise success but wants to go for pure message, he can do what he wants.

The Eurovision rules state : “That performance must take place live, and without manipulation.
Autotune can be used as a sound effect on parts of a song, but we do not allow it to correct the tone of the lead singer or the lead choir throughout the song.”

The way he remembers growing up watching Eurovision is lovely. Pity that this year no youngsters would be able to enjoy a show filled with S&M and inappropriate performances. 😩😵💫🤮🤯
