I must say this is incredibly well researched, while explicitly mentioning stuff that is erronerously referred even in the club's wikipedia page (that Litex and CSKA merged, for example). During communism, old Bulgarian football clubs (such as Slavia, Levski, Botev) and new ones (such as CSKA) were conditioned to rely on state support for their success and/or existence. So, when Bulgaria became democratic, these clubs mostly transferred to mostly Mafia owners who without exception embarked on 'supporting' teams through loans, mergers and shady deals before those owners were killed, arrested, exiled or simply lost interest. This left the clubs in a situation where they have not developed the necessary culture and savvy to survive in a market economy, and many of Bulgaria's most famous clubs folded and were refounded (Botev, CSKA, Lokomotiv Sofia, Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Beroe), some on multiple occassions, or are about to fold (Levski). Meanwhile new clubs with no outstanding debts and with more business-savvy (and sometimes behind-the-scenes-savvy) owners (Litex and Ludogorets) have managed to dominate the league during the weakened state of the traditional clubs. Because Bulgaria lacks the equivalent of Italy's Article 52, this has created a string of 'phoenix' clubs who cannot compete against the new powerhouses (CSKA''s situation is not even the first one, there were once three Pirin Blagoevgrad clubs and two competed in the first division at the same time, with none actually being successor to the original club; or when Lokomotiv Plovdiv was merged into another club, which was renamed Lokomotiv and which, ironically, was a source of much ridicule from CSKA supporters). Anyway, good to see someone is presenting the situation in a proper way.
@Dmitry Zaripov it is possible, but I doubt it. The club is in extremely dire financial situation. But to answer your question - we perceive CSKA-Sofia as the main rival because it is the CSKA with the most fans. We do not see it as the successor club because it is not.
I am Bulgarian, and I live in Japan for more than 10 years, but that answered a lot of questions to me, since I almost stopped following what’s happening in Bulgarian football, which was definitely a mess even at that time!
@@eggfriedreus793 it was the first time the two clubs played against each other. Attendance was laughable, even for current COVID safety measures standards and the just promoted CSKA 1948 almost beat the one that resided in the top flight.

Kry7en about the bad history with police their fans are with police and against police in different situations the thing that matters is do they want to be with the police when they can get sth from that they are buddies but when their fans threw a sth to policeman in a game and injured that policeman they were completely against the police and they thought everything was against them cos they are delusional idiots
Well done lad! I loved the the content even as a Levski fan! Especially the part at 11:35. All jokes aside, great content and keep em going. Can't wait for the Ludogorets video.

Juju Oh yes, I am also doing it and I am in season 6! Some tips: -Make the most of young players like Yoan Baurenski, Martin Smolenski and Valentin Antov. They have big potential -Start scouting for young Bulgarian prospects and also make the most the youth academy, because right now the CSKA fans are unhappy that the club is not trusting a lot of young Bulgarian players in the starting X -Sell Geferson! A lot of the fans(including me) don’t like him and the way he is playing -Yout goal should be to destroy Ludogorets, Levski and CSKA 1948 and also to make CSKA one of the best teams in Europe again ENJOY THE SAVE!
I just wanted to tell you that you did a great job making an objective video on a really confusing and somewhat biased topic. Love the effort you have put in keep it up!
Thank you for talking about this topic , because I am from Bulgaria and here my friends are divided on what they think about the subject. Love tge video . Keep up the good work , Alfie.
One mistake though:Grisha Ganchev is not born in Lovech. He is born in the village of Mikre, which is near Lovech, and which I visited yesterday and took photos of his home house;)
Ludogoret$ is the most corrupted team in Bulgaria. A one player has a 4 matches penalty and the referee allegedly corrected the punishment of the Ludogoret$ player Instead of 4 there is now 1 penalty per game. Every game in which ludogorets are given money to the referees and so it happens all the time. CSKA is and will always be the greatest team in Bulgaria.
As a Bulgarian,Love the video Alfie!!! Keep the good work... You create the Best politically-involved football documentaries!!!! You Should do a video on the amazing Rivalry of the Plovdiv teams: Lokomotiv and Botev
@Dmitry Zaripov more or less CSKA-Sofia, because: 1. They have much more fans. 2. They play on the original stadium and have acquired the emblem. 3. They are more successful. As a Levski fan, I love watching the two CSKAs derby, it’s really fun…well unless you are the commentator.
Ludogorets are the most corrupted team in Bulgaria. Their owner Kiril Domuschiev is also functioner in Bulgarian Football Union and owner of one of the biggest broadcasting groups in Bulgaria which is holding the television rights of the Bulgarian League and 2nd tier. In one match last year between Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Ludogorets, the referee missed to give clear penalty for Lokomotiv. Then the commentator said that it was probably a penalty and the referee made a mistake, and the next day he was fired (from the Domuschiev's television). Usually the refs in Bulgaria help Ludogorets, especially in the derby matches against Levski and CSKA-Sofia. But last year against Slavia in the last matchday of the season, with Ludogorets secured the title, the referee gave one Ludogorets player a red card. The referee commission in Bulgaria decides it was not a red card and punished the referee of the match by moving him to the 3rd tier.
CSKA-Sofia's owner Grisha Ganchev bought the old brand ''PFC CSKA AD'' including the club's logo for 4 000 000 Euro. All of these money will go to the debtors of the bankrupt club. After this move there was no real doubt who is the legal and moral successor of CSKA. 80-90 precent of CSKA fans support this club. ''CSKA 1948''' has one of the smallest fan bases in the country. Even though it's clear who is the ''real CSKA'' many of the fans are not happy with the way Grisha Ganchev rules the club.

@@Dido01239, you obviously have never been a sincere CSKA fan! Your statement is false and is not corresponding with the facts. I have to remind you, Gr. Ganchev was the owner of CSKA when the club used to play in the third division of Bulgarian football and there was no doubt who CSKA was/is and nobody was saying even a word about Litex...You have to be able to make a difference between a football club and a licence. Yes, we took the professional licence from Chavdar Etropole, because the Football Federation denied to issue one after we won the promotion to the upper, professional level of Bulgarian football. But the club and the owner was still the same! We won the National cup trophy while Gr. Ganchev owned the team, we played two years in a row in League Europe, we defeated Levski Sofia several times and defeated and eliminated Ludogorets from the National cup tournament. The only truth in your statement is that we still do not have a new stadium, but this is fact because, while the state builds new stadiums for almost all other clubs with public funds, we are the only club in Bulgaria who is paying millions every year for rent for our own stadium and there is no sign that the government would help to build a new one and even going as far as stopping us from building one ourselves with our own money. You are hating on CSKA but you are obviously admiring that a couple of Bulgarian billionaires created this fake club they've named after us just so they can smear the CSKA history and divide the fans. You are misdirecting your hatred. Thank God the fans backed up their club. Proof of this is the packed stadium for the 70 yr anniversary.
For Steaua name is a team in first division named FCSB and one in third division named Steaua Bucuresti. For Rapid is one team in the second division and like two others in fourth or fifth division
10:28 Bozhkov became the owner of Levski Sofia in February 2019, not CSKA- Sofia. He was hoping that through acquiring Levski Sofia (CSKA's main historical rival) he would be able to save his gambling business "National Lottery AD" in Bulgaria. His gambling business was found illegal, paying VAT lower than the required % of income issued by the law. "National Lottery AD" was the main sponsor of the club, which was basically responsible for all the money pumped into Levski. He pleaded innocent, claiming that he hasn't been involved in any tax evasion. Bozhkov tried to use Levski Sofia as a tool, encouraging street protests and claiming that the Bulgarian authority was corrupt itself. After his business, The National Lottery ceased to exist, Bozhkov stopped the financial flow of money to Levski Sofia. In February this year, Bozhkov ran away to Dubai. With the club already in massive debt ( about 20 million Bulgarian Leva, which is roughly 10 million Euros) in February, Levski Sofia's new owner, who isn't a businessman, is desperately trying to find any source of income to save the club. The debt has risen to 30 million Bulgarian Leva in the following months, which as an astonishing amount of debt for an eastern European club. As of today, the players have only received 2 of their monthly salaries and Levski Sofia's future, similar to CSKA's in 2016 is uncertain, with bankruptcy seeming inevitable.
Ok, I haven't liked all the videos in the channel but the research and the dedication for this documentary from Alfie is admirable and the end result is very good and satisfying. One mistake is that Vasil Bozhkov aka The Scull acquired Levski Sofia in 2019, not CSKA. Good Job!
Yeah it’s really confusing but most us Bulgarians recognise CSKA Sofia instead of CSKA 1948. Also the teams played a couple of weeks ago and the played on Stadium vasil Levski which is a neutral ground for both teams.
Great video, I've enjoyed it very much! This soap opera-saga will continue in the future, in a couple of years you will have enough material to make a part 2 (althogh it is not necessery). Really entertaining content on the channel, keep it up!
You forgot to mention that Grisha Ganchev is the owner that cares the most about CSKA more than any of our previous owners. When Ganchev was younger he used to train as a wrestler in CSKA’s academy and when he was Litex owner matches vs Levski were very important to him and that’s one of the reasons why he loves CSKA more than all of our previous owners combined
Do an Steaua București(Owned by Romanian Army) and FCSB video. Similar to the situation in Bulgaria, a lot of coruption. Steaua have won the Champions Cup(CL of today) în 1986
I wish you can do a video on what is happening in Romanian football, the entire madness surrounding CSA Steaua, FCSB (former Steaua), Dinamo and Rapid. It would be a great video tbh.
Long story short by a CSKA fan: 99% of the fans support CSKA Sofia, CSKA 1948 are seen as a menace and not legit club. CSKA Sofia bought the original CSKA's emblem for 8 million leva thus officially inheriting the bankrupt club's identity. It is not clear who is financially behind 1948 but the majority of people assume it's somebody close to Ludogorets's owner K.Domuschiev.
Well... That's the sad reality of Bulgarian football. CSKA-Sofia and 1948 fighting to claim the history of the original club, Levski is in big financial troubles and may dissolve. Most of the clubs are mismanaged, and Ludogorets just sweeping the league.
CSKA Sofia buy the trade mark of CSKA, Payed,3,5 m Bgn to former players of CSKA and have the support of over 95%of fans.1948 just call himself CSKA but never made even one step further in the battle for recognition
Great video! Balkans football as a whole has a great traditions and many, many stories to be told! I have just one quick edit: in 2016 Vasil Bojkov tries to save the original CSKA, although his idea doesn’t lead to anything because of a fight with both Ganchev and the main sponsor of the current CSKA 1948 Tsvetomir Naydenov over one of their main businesses - Gambling industry. Additionally, at 10:27, Vasil Bojkov takes ownership at Levski Sofia - CSKA’s rival in February 2019 up until his departure to Dubai
A similar thing will definitely happen soon in Romania, CSA Steaua Bucuresti (the refounded one) finally got promoted to Liga III a few days ago after three tries. FCSB's owner Gigi Becali tried to block their promotion by going to the CAS, but its request was dismissed right away (as it was nonsense).
Just to clarify - the CSKA Sofia owned by Grisha Ganchev bought all assets and the whole bankrupted club for 8 million levs, that is the main reason 99% of the fans support this club as succsessor to the old one. CSKA 1948 has nothing to do with the old club except the name but now they are being sued to change it.
Alfie: I'm not a native Bulgarian speaker. Me: ...no excuses, sir. But really, please keep doing these types of videos. They are awesome and well made!
,,CSKA died in 2016” Alfie, as long as there are the fans that support the club and UEFA and the Bulgarian Football Union(BFU) recognise us as the direct successor of the old club, we won’t die!
Pretty good video for a non-bugarian channel - it is hard to find all this information in an accessible way. However there are more things some of them are not so easily publicly available, others are incorrect: 1. The original club and company PFC CSKA was in a very troubled situation, as all the owners after Vassil Bozhkov weren't pour any real money, the generated more debt for the club. In the end it all snowballed and the club went in default situation. 2. After PFC CSKA lost it's license (the original club and company) it was demoted to the Third level in Bulgarian football league. It managed to won the National Cup the same season (2015-2016) and it was the first team from that level winning this trophy in the history of the Bulgarian football. 3. CSKA 1948 is established by Vassil Bozhkov - it is publicly denied by both the club and Bozhkov himself, but the company behind the club is founded by him (it is in the public registry). The possible explanation was that Bozhkov was combining forces with Kiril Domuschiev (the owner of the PFC Ludogoretz - 9 consecutive national champion) for the ownership of CSKA and to rival Grisha Ganchev's bidding for it (with CSKA-Sofia). 4. CSKA 1948 lured most of the youth club of the bankrupted PFC CSKA and half of the original team which won the Cup in 2016 as it promised "clean start" and "the dignifying way to the top". The started from the lowest football division - Fourth Level and for couple of years they managed to get for the top one. 5. CSKA-Sofia (the club which is the renamed club and company of PFC Litex Lovech) managed to acquire the rights to play on the original CSKA stadium - "Bylgarska armiya" (Bulgarian army). It signed a long-term contract with for renting the all former CSKA facilities. 6. After a long struggle CSKA-Sofia won the tender for the crest, the emblem, and some amortized assets from the original PFC CSKA. They paid about 8 mln. leva (~4 mln. euro) which are went to cover some of the PFC CSKA debts (from more than 10 mln. euros). This was the formal way to recognize CSKA-Sofia as the direct successor of the default PFC CSKA. 7. Lot of different PFC CSKA creditors are suing CSKA-Sofia in that matter, as they are recognized by UEFA as direct successor. There are some lawsuits already ruled against the new club, because of this. Fun fact, the club is still arguing in those lawsuits that they are PFC Litex Lovech. 8. With the emblem secured by CSKA-Sofia and the promotion of CSKA 1948 to the First level the latter changed its emblem and crest. However - CSKA-Sofia signaled the prosecution to raid CSKA 1948 offices and they found old fan articles with the original emblem. I think there are investigation and possible lawsuit after this raid. 9. Vassil Bozhkov took over Levski Sofia in 2019, but after the prosecution over him he transferred the shares initially to the prime minister of Bulgaria - Boyko Borisov. After that they landed to the current owners. 10. Vassil Bozhkov's prosecution started as one of his longstanding partners - Tsvetomir Naydenov accuse him with a lot of crimes - tax evasion, murder threats and etc. Naydenov runs the biggest online better Efbet and has a possible back by Domuschiev and other big Bulgarian players in the political life for this action. After Bozhkov's exile to UAE, Naydenov took over CSKA 1948 and provided the financial support. Before that the official statements for the club's funding was "from the fans and open sponsor contracts". In fact it was from both Bozhkov and Naydenov. 11. CSKA-Sofia is in preparation to acquire the long-term rights for the "Bulagrska Armiya" stadium and potentially to make a complete renovations on it. Still, there were a lot of promises like this during the years and we will see if they manage to fulfill them. I just want to add more specifics and context to the story, and not to downplay the end result. Thank you for making the video!
The fight in 1985 was organized by Levski (CSKA rivals) just to ban Stoychkov. They knew he was the biggest talent and would dominate the Bulgarian football, but they also knew he is very quick to anger. He was send to the army afterwards and he said he would become the best player in the world, even though he was banned for life. He did win the Golden ball in 1994.
I'm from Bulgaria and I personally dont watch our domestic league because I find it really boring dominated by one team nowadays, but i watched this game just out if curiosity. I had a feeling that you might make a video out of it so fair play for that!
99% of the CSKA supporters do not recognize CSKA 1948 as the true heir to the original CSKA, myself included. One of the reasons for this is that they claim to be self-funded and independent, but the reality is quite different. However, I do wish that the team would have continued playing with mostly young Bulgarians who know what the team means. As oppposed to the current situation for the past few years where like 60% of the active players are foreigners and most are not even that good.
Never expected to see a video about bulgarian football on one of my favourite football channels but it was very informative as i have no interest in our football and don't follow it at all. Would love a video about ludogoretc aswell.
The difference between the two clubs is that CSKA Sofia is the rightful owner of the previous club's logo, stadium, players and history. It is the owner of all depts and all assets, while CSKA 1948 is founded by enemies of CSKA, who are just trying to mess with the progress of the team. CSKA 1948 have many connections with the owner of one of the rivals of CSKA - Ludogorets, Kiril Domuschiev. He currently owns half of the football industry including some TV stations, a club and is part of a commitie in BFS(Bulgarian football union). He is connected with the country's mafia. Everyone in the country is against CSKA, because only CSKA will try to defeat Ludogorets. CSKA 1948 is not affiliated with the previous club, they are just trying to copy it for media attention. CSKA Sofia is the best Bulgarian team ever to exist. We have won against many european teams such as Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Parma, Liverpool and Ajax. Until we die, the team will exist and will win cups. САМО ЦСКА ❤
Did this thing also happen between Steaua Bucharest & FCSB? If you never make the video about it, I'd love to see it in your channel anytime (though I'd prefer to see it sooner).
Great video, gets most things spot on. Just a few nuances to add to the picture. When the original club won the third division and the cup (albeit after a string of very suspicious games) the owner Ganchev faced a dilemma as to how to continue the club. He polled the fans and asked whether to continue in the second division and slowly pay out the club's debt to the government, or seek an 'alternative' path to the top flight. Their fans chose the latter with promises of glory over doing the right thing and paying what they owe. Hence what happened is that Litex Lovech who were relegated for walking off a match, were merged with another team (Chavdar Etropole) in order to go around a rule that states that a team cannot change their name and geographic region and retain their professional license (Lovech is in the Lovech region, Etro Pole is in the wider Sofia region). What remained was to allow the new club direct access to the top division as both merged teams were in division two. Conveniently the Bulgarian Football Union proposed a 'reform' to the first division and created a brand new larger division including clubs from the old one and filled with other clubs who met 'certain criteria'. It is widely known that this was done only because of the desires of the renamed Litex. So to summarize - army club created by example from the soviet union to spread political propaganda. No fanbase for decades after being created. Throughout the years a whole host of clubs melted down to keep army club on life support. All the best players from around the country brought in from military service (not a single notable player from the academy until the 80s). Then in the 90s the free market hits club hard, practically no achievements on the pitch. String of owners from the top of the Bulgarian underground. Continued lack of success, poor management and millions in debt leading to bankruptcy due to mentioned owners, gloryhunter fans etc. Meanwhile tens of other clubs destroyed and millions in taxes unpaid. Fairly resembles a parasite.
A video like this would be pretty interesting on the case of the portuguese league club Os Belenenses who are only one of the 5 teams (including the big three) who have won the league. They split into two teams, Belenenses SAD (or B SAD for short lmao) and Os Belenenses, with the first remaining in the first tier while only keeping the squad and losing everything else including fans and the latter going down to the 5th tier but maintaining the badge, fans and also the stadium (i believe)
Every newly dominant team is hated, especially when you are used to your team winning the league every other year. It doesn't help that Ludogorets has sometimes ('sometimes' being the operative word) used referees to win games. Furthermore, the league TV rights are owned by Ludogorets' owner. That being said, they have consistently been the best team in the league (by a mile) for 6 years now, and have achieved notable success in European competition. So it's mostly hate with a couple of grains of truth. You've already seen the claim that they 'have no fans', which is true, compared to 4 of Bulgaria's top clubs, but otherwise they boast a respectable attendance for Bulgarian league standards; they have a core of fans that passionately supported them in the third division before it was cool (EXTREMELY rare for lower-league teams to have fans and not only spectators), even though their hometown is very small (about 30 000 with a 20% Turkish population). Those are essentially the same arguments used against Litex Lovech when they dominated the league (Levski Sofia were twice runners-up to Litex and CSKA suffered their heaviest defeat ever 8:0, again to Litex) at the turn of the century, only in that case it was all true. Then Ganchev became bored of winning and started developing young players instead until the early 2010s.
Very interesting and in-depth video from a local point of view. I only noticed 2 issues: 1. Vasil Bozhkov acquired Levski Sofia, not CSKA Sofia; 2. Lovech is pronounced with a German "tsch" sound (the same "ch" as in kitchen), but I've noticed that native English speakers always butcher foreign names, and with that in mind, you actually did okay with the other names.
Very few people actually support Football Club Central Sport Club of the Army 1948(CSKA 1948). More than 95% of the CSKA fan base decided to support CSKA-Sofia. What’s funnier is that CSKA 1948 started to come to schools(including mine) to come and beg people to support them, because they know that they have no fans, but just 30 traitors who come to the stadium😂
Ludogores is the most hated club by far. No fans and shady rules that help them. Thats it nowadays here. Ludogores win everygame by 3 goals. And when Cska or Levski try to beat them Ludogores get a penalty/free kicks until they draw/win. Would be very interested in seeing a video covering their "history"
As a Bulgarian and a CSKA fan myself, knowing the story to heart and crying in theese 13 minutes of reliving the story I can tell you my opinion. So as you said Litex were relegated cuz of the referee sending off 2 players undeserved. Litex gave out their license to the CSKA that won the cup in the 24th of may (Bulgarian literature day btw) We got the licsence, but Litex didnt get rebranded as us, even though there are documents of that, but I dont think they are true. CSKA 1948 on the other hand is a team sponsored by Efbet, which is "The Skull's " casino company and many of us believe Brothers Domuschievi (Ludogoretz presidents) have a finger in there as well. Levski on the other hand is close to bankruptcy as well with 20 milion (don't remember the number of millions) in dept. CSKA got their license off for 8 million (I think but it's not more than 10 mil) but Levski's license is still theirs.... There is a lot of discrimination and corrupcy in our football and CSKA having the biggest success and fanbase got BROKEN UP by the government! I can talk for days about what happened and I am not the only one who can do that! Im not the only one who cried when the 2 CSKA's played in the opening match of the EFBET league (league is sponsored by Bojkov, who was Levski's president a couple of months ago) Thank you HITC for making videos for my country and my team and spreading what is happening! Anyway, good to see someone is presenting the situation in a proper way.
they should have stayed communist at least their clubs wouldnt go bankrupt
@Dmitry Zaripov depending on how the summer goes... Could very well be some 4th division team :D
@Dmitry Zaripov it is possible, but I doubt it. The club is in extremely dire financial situation.
But to answer your question - we perceive CSKA-Sofia as the main rival because it is the CSKA with the most fans. We do not see it as the successor club because it is not.

-Make the most of young players like Yoan Baurenski, Martin Smolenski and Valentin Antov. They have big potential
-Start scouting for young Bulgarian prospects and also make the most the youth academy, because right now the CSKA fans are unhappy that the club is not trusting a lot of young Bulgarian players in the starting X
-Sell Geferson! A lot of the fans(including me) don’t like him and the way he is playing

@Dmitry Zaripov more or less CSKA-Sofia, because:
1. They have much more fans.
2. They play on the original stadium and have acquired the emblem.
3. They are more successful.
As a Levski fan, I love watching the two CSKAs derby, it’s really fun…well unless you are the commentator.
Really looking forward to the Ludogorets video. Excellent stuff!

Long story short by a CSKA fan:
99% of the fans support CSKA Sofia, CSKA 1948 are seen as a menace and not legit club.
Most of the clubs are mismanaged, and Ludogorets just sweeping the league.
но Черно Море и Славия се представят добре и извличат големи таланти от академията, и после ги продават в чужбина

Pretty good video for a non-bugarian channel - it is hard to find all this information in an accessible way. However there are more things some of them are not so easily publicly available, others are incorrect:
Woahhhh. I love your passion to do such videos!!

By the way great pronunciation on 90% of the Bulgarian words/names. Good job, mate.

САМО ЦСКА ❤

That was fascinating ⚽️
My favorite type of HITC video 😁 I would love to see a similar type video about Chivas USA or my club NYRB being acquired by Red Bull

After that final statement I really want to see why ludogorets are so hated, despite all that going on with 2 other clubs
It’s because of money and game-fixing! They literally bought the league and have destroyed Bulgarian football
And also they have no fans, they play in some random ass town called ,,Razgrad” and are Turks:)
This is very similar to what has happened in India recently, between ATK and Mohun Bagan.
Much love from Sofia and don't forget SAMO CSKA!
@HITC Sevens Bulgaria was never a Soviet Republic! It was a satellite country of the USSR (just like Romania) ! Oooh...the dissapointment😠😤
