I was looking for a video showing how to release those 2 grommets on the front of air box so as to install the stupid gasket required for the K&N air filter. I would stick with the original air box because of water infiltration. It does rain, and I drive mine in the rain. Thanks for the video, you also showed how to pull hose out of side of air box, now it should be an easy job tomorrow. You were very helpful for me, thanks again.
More recently I ordered and installed the performance hood seal. I don't think there's much "performance" but it stops water from getting to the filter. Thanks for watching and glad the vid helped you.
This same Blackwing Air Filter setup was mounted on my ‘99 C5 when I purchased it back in 2010. It is a pain to clean and you need the right products to clean and treat the filter with. I also was given the original air filter and there are times when I feel like putting the original back on the car especially after I read articles stating these aftermarket Air Filter Assemblies really do not make a difference at all. I also own a C6 with the stock air filter assembly. I am leaving it alone. Nice video you did none the less.
I've heard the same about cleaning and the performance gains not being that good either. Figured it has to be better than stock. I'll find out first hand about cleaning, when the time comes lol. Thanks for stopping in and watching.
Can you post your comment on the correct video? I thought about this and if you do win, there's gonna be so much hate thrown my way bc your comment doesn't exist in the video lol. I'd like to avoid that and still give you a chance 👍
I also have an '04 C5 (A4). I added a Blackwing and Magnaflow exhaust and def noticed a power increase. My C5 also has factory lower gears in rear end (performance handling package), that is the "mod" where you will really feel an increase in torque and overall BALLS.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Since this vid, I installed TSP headers, xpipe and b&b bullets. You're right about the gears. I test drove some C5s and C6s that had 2.73s and my C5 has the 3.15s, definitely feel the difference.
Don't think, just get one and you won't regret it lol. Do a little homework before you're ready but the end of cycle years tend to be a better bet. Good luck and thanks for the support 👍
Also changing that corrugated duct in the throttle body for a smoothed rubber sleeve may help. (Less restriction) and yes a little pedito right there... 6:50
the corrugated duct is designed that way to slightly disrupt or tumble the air flow , to give the sensors a better sample of the air as it passes. a straight section will not do this even of it is marketed as "performance". it is very hard to out engineer the original design engineers with only intuitive thinking and belief in advertising.
I have a Blackwing also. Feel it's the best on the market. Looks to me as you missed the clamp between the filter and the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor. Should be one on the filter, one on the sensor and one between sensor and the air bridge.
You're right, I did miss it. After doing the video and looking at it, I thought one should be there and added it after. Thanks for the feedback and good eye. Thanks for watching.
But then you'd be beating the piss out of your car by cutting it to pieces 😂... is it the best air intake choice? No, but it is a reasonably priced option that has more exposed filter area than stock, so it can't be all that bad.
Sorry Sal to iNform you but if you vent the front as in the Z-06, as I did, you have plenty of cool air to any of the filters sold be it the BlackWing or others. I vented mine through the top of the fog light panels. Looks totally stock from the front .
This is 100% important when removing the stock air box and installing the SLP Black Wing. You also have to purchase the Rubber Performance Seal that sticks on the front of your C5 where the hood comes down and meets the body. The Performance Seal keeps the rain from entering your SLP Black Wing air filter. If you do not have this seal installed, the rain will set off your check engine light and your engine will misfire. The Mass Air FLow Sensor will not function with the rain coming in to your air filter. DO NOT FORGET to install this performance seal. You can purchase the seal for less than $20 from Zip Corvette!
few people know this. you have much more grace than myself with this remark. I chose to combat ignorance , as I used to be easily fooled because I didn't know much.
TL;DR: do the zip tie mod. Save mooolaaa! All the cold air intake mods are a good way for the aftermarket to make money. all you have to do is remove the cover of the stock intake, "maybe" put a a cloth/screen filter(e.g., K&N) if you want to spend that money, and zip tie it into place. Voila wide open cool air intake.
I said in the video I got the Blackwing for free so I saved the price of zip ties lol. But yes, the zip tie mod has been well known. If the slight performance bump is all that matters, then go with the zip tie mod. If appearance also matters, then go with something aftermarket, bc the zip tie mod isn't visually appealing. Different strokes for different folks as they say. Thanks for watching and commenting
Dude i did the zip tie mod to my 2002 ls1 and it gave me a shift kit to 2nd gear chirped like a mother .first. Time my car braved .the more air the better
Don't know if it's just me, but I like the way your engine sounded before the install. After the install, your engine sounded quieter. Listen to it really close on this video and I think you will see what I mean. Just my two cents... I have an '01 Millennium Yellow C5... Thumbs up and a sub from me... Stay safe... Rico
Phone audio isn't the best. There's no noticeable difference in sound in person, only air intake sound is increased but not by much. Thanks for subbing and awesome to have another MY vette sub. I have a few MY subs and there's a few others that have channels too.
Great Job Brother! I followed your video step by step and was a huge help. I have a 2000 C5 and my Blackwing Filter has NO SPOT for the Air Hose? just the GM Filter clean sensor? I hope that is normal? lol
I had a mod like this in my stock 96 Impala SS. It turns out that living in California means the smog Nazis have to approve of any modifications to the intake system. My aftermarket intake did not have the approval of California. So, during the smog test, the inspector warned me that the non-stock intake will not be allowed on the next smog check (in two years). So, here's my question: Does this system come with a California "EO" certification? I have a stock C5 (2003) and would love to put an aftermarket filter on it.
I don't believe so. I'm not sure what aftermarket filters are California certified, but maybe a quick search on the Corvette Forum might turn up something. These are pretty easy to swap in/out, so maybe you just swap the stock one in when going for the test and go back to any aftermarket one. That's if you can't find one that is compliant.
I just installed this CAI/filter today for my c5. My package only came with the filter and not connecting rubber gasket to connect the MAF to the filter. Other than that is was pretty elementary.
Great job Dave. but to be honest with you you better keep the stock part it's better to keep the stock one in the car got the aftermarket ones they don't last long and water gets through them no matter what you do even if you put the seal or front of the hood there was a reason why GM did it that way. and there's really no difference in horsepower it's just a gimmick and it makes you think you getting more horsepower but it's all in your mind
Filter had a couple hundred miles on it and has an indicator for when it needs to be cleaned. After driving it for several thousand miles more, it's definitely noticeable when it needs to be cleaned lol. Cleaning the MAF is a great idea. I actually cleaned it before I started RUclips. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I agree. It's blue colored oil, but turns grey really quick. Just cleaned it a few hundred miles ago and it looked like this after the 3rd drive with it.
Just installed mine 20 mins ago using your video as a guide. I got thrown off by the air system hose and no hole for it in the filter. I didn’t have a tool to make a hole in the filter, so I plugged the air system hose into the existing hole for the filter indicator. You think that’s ok? Seems to fit good. I’ll just clean the filter when it looks dirty. Lemme know. Thanks bro
I just tried doing a search and it's weird that it doesn't have 2 ports for the filter indicator and AIR hose. I don't see anything wrong with what you did and it should be fine. Now you need to install headers, delete the AIR system and put the filter indicator in so you know when the filter needs to be cleaned lol.
just got 97 c5 three days ago. My other car is a wrx. With the wrx, every little mod needed a tune right away. Will I be ok doing this mod and waiting to do a tune until I do the rest of my mods?
First, congrats on the purchase and welcome to the Corvette Community. You don't need a tune with this mod. As far as a tune with other mods, it'll depend on the mod. You'll get a check engine light if you run long tube headers, the car will still run fine but you'll have codes. Up to you if you want to tune it or let it go until the next mod. If it's not too long, then don't tune it and wait. For simple boltons, you could get a Mail Order Tune ($150) to get you by until you do the more serious mods, but again that's up to you. I did a mail order tune after new exhaust from the headers back and then I did a dyno tune after I replaced the cam. Those mods were separated by about 2 years. Any questions just let me know
Previous owner said he had less than 1k miles on it and the air flow was still really good according to the air flow indicator. I also didn't have the filter oil to reapply. Pretty soon I'm going to be cleaning it and applying new filter oil. The filter color is a dark blue, so it wasn't as bad as the camera picked it up.
YellowVette04 Thanks for the reply! I am debating between a 2003 Z06 Black and a 2005 C6 Silver with the automatic. Both are really low miles and within a thousand dollars difference in price. I might add I am 74 years old but I can still handle a 6 speed. I drove my son’s Z06 and I was really impressed.
You can't go wrong with either one. Both have about the same power so it comes down to personal preference. C6 has certain amenities a C5 doesn't and slightly different looks. C5 Z06 is a hardtop, where a C6 base has the removal top. Transmission might be a factor too, but it doesn't sound like it. You'll enjoy either one in the end.
Idk to be honest. I get this question a lot, so I was thinking of putting the stock back in just to see. It's a great filter and it should improve airflow, I just don't think you'll feel the seat of the pants difference.

Not really. What I might have felt, may have just been me justifying the mod lol. Can't see how it wouldn't help, but zip tie mod may be the same result for cheaper.

Interesting but a 5 minute video with 7 minutes of blah, blah, blah. I fast forwarded way too much. Please get one of your buddies to watch these first!
WOW that engine bay super clean "like NEW"
I probably cleaned it a few weeks before the video lol. I try to get around to it twice a year.
I was looking for a video showing how to release those 2 grommets on the front of air box so as to install the stupid gasket required for the K&N air filter.

I soooo need that cup holder Corvette clips for my 03/ 50th anniversary yellow vette glad I came across this channel thanks .
Thanks for the support. You commented on the wrong vid, but I'll still count it lol. Good luck!
Oops think wrong video got carried away watching the air assembly
😂 it's all good
Can you post your comment on the correct video? I thought about this and if you do win, there's gonna be so much hate thrown my way bc your comment doesn't exist in the video lol. I'd like to avoid that and still give you a chance 👍
Sooo who won the cupholder thing ?
good job on the video man! you described everything very well on camera, and video was on point
Thanks for watching and subscribing 👍

I’ve been binge watching your videos for a couple days now lol I’m thinking of getting a C5.. keep up the great work brotha!
Don't think, just get one and you won't regret it lol. Do a little homework before you're ready but the end of cycle years tend to be a better bet. Good luck and thanks for the support 👍
YellowVette04 thanks man, and I drove a C6 LS3 and a LS1 C5 and I like the C5 more lol especially because I’m a sucker for pop up headlights.
Pop ups and a rounder ass. I originally wanted an LS3 C6 but can't beat the price of the C5s right now.
Hi Rico I just bought a 2000 C5 MY...Looking forward to more mods
Good luck with the new purchase and welcome. I've done a lot since this simple air filter. Let me know if you have any questions along the way
Also changing that corrugated duct in the throttle body for a smoothed rubber sleeve may help. (Less restriction) and yes a little pedito right there... 6:50
Thanks for the suggestion. I don't remember that but definitely sounds like it 😂. Thanks for watching and commenting

Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope the video was helpful 🤘
Got the same one, very happy with it!
May go vararam one day but for now it does the job.
I have a Blackwing also. Feel it's the best on the market. Looks to me as you missed the clamp between the filter and the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor. Should be one on the filter, one on the sensor and one between sensor and the air bridge.

Good thing I installed mine before I bought my Blackwing air filter
Nice, Straight forward installation. Thumbs up!
Thanks man. Super simple and I might be changing it for a Vararam system.
I like the black box,I put a k&n on my C5.
K&n would have been my option if I didn't get this. Thanks for watching and enjoy the vette 👍
airbox greatly improved in the '04 C5.
They did improve things over time. I would think this has even better air flow. Thanks for watching
few people know this. you have much more grace than myself with this remark. I chose to combat ignorance , as I used to be easily fooled because I didn't know much.

Great video brother! Thanks it helped a ton. Sometimes the directions they give are terrible and this was a great walkthrough
Thanks man, glad it helped. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

Good stuff Dave. I just bought a Vararam from offerup for $100. You scored on your deal. Free is always best!!
Dam that's a good deal. One day I'll probably upgrade to the Vararam.
On the 2001 C5 the air box does not pop off with a screwdriver. You need to undo 2- 27mm torx that attaches the air BOC to the front cross member.
There should be grommets on those studs you're referring to. To my knowledge, all C5s are this way. Let me know
I had a full bolt on C5 Z06 that made 354 whp. After the dyno tune it was at 400.6 whp. I'm not sure if C5's gain power without a dyno tune.
Agreed. I did a mail order tune after replacing the exhaust system and it certainly woke up a bit. Thanks for watching.

The Airaid filter looks about the same and is cheaper I'm wondering what the difference might be
Likely no difference. Both reputable companies so whichever has the better deal would be the better buy. Thanks for watching and commenting
I just installed this CAI/filter today for my c5. My package only came with the filter and not connecting rubber gasket to connect the MAF to the filter. Other than that is was pretty elementary.

Joe Sole?? The Joe I know or a different one?? Appreciate you watching the video either way.
Another great video. 👍🏾👍🏾
I appreciate it. Thanks for watching my vids
You forgot to clean and oil filter (unless it's a dry model) or clean MAF sensor. Those alone will improve power
Filter had a couple hundred miles on it and has an indicator for when it needs to be cleaned. After driving it for several thousand miles more, it's definitely noticeable when it needs to be cleaned lol. Cleaning the MAF is a great idea. I actually cleaned it before I started RUclips. I agree. It's blue colored oil, but turns grey really quick. Just cleaned it a few hundred miles ago and it looked like this after the 3rd drive with it.

Where you in the Army broth?
No I wasn't. Thanks for watching 👍
Why didn’t you clean the Blackwing air filter before you installed it? From the video it looked like it was dirty when you installed it.
Previous owner said he had less than 1k miles on it and the air flow was still really good according to the air flow indicator. I also didn't have the filter oil to reapply. How did you get the two grommets off holding the stock air box ??
Long screwdriver to pop the airbox off the front and sometimes the grommet will stay on the posts, but if not they're easy to pull off the airbox
Was thinking about getting this filter for my car. Do you feel any difference in performance?
Tara W its not a seat of the pants difference but there is a little. Better sound too, video didn't quite pick that up.
Could you feel any additional power gains? Thinking of getting the blackwing for my stock c5.
Idk to be honest. I get this question a lot, so I was thinking of putting the stock back in just to see. It's a great filter and it should improve airflow, I just don't think you'll feel the seat of the pants difference.
Did it sound diff, drive diff?
Sounds a little different, but no real driving difference. Very little improvement if any from most intakes.
Did you have to disconnect the battery?
The Jeep Posse there's no threat of damaging a cable and therefore hurting yourself, BUT ya never know so it's always safe to disconnect the negative terminal.
where the new video can't wait to hear how she sounds,
Getting the correct O2 extensions from TSP tomorrow so I should have time to do a quick installation review tomorrow. If not, definitely Friday. I posted a before and after on Instagram, @yellowvette04.
Ok can't wait you got a nice Vette.
It has it's blemishes, but thanks for the support.
did you feel any improvement?
Not really. What I might have felt, may have just been me justifying the mod lol. Can't see how it wouldn't help, but zip tie mod may be the same result for cheaper.
@@YellowVette04 haha, there are shirts that say ZIPTIE EVERYTHING.
does it run cooler?
This won't help the car run cooler. The best way to do that is clean the radiator, bc you'll be surprised how much junk goes up on there. Also, a tune will lower the temps that the fans turn on. My car rarely gets over 200, even on hot days in traffic.
thanks..I'm base model.with axel back corsa..my radiator is clean. would really like to do a tune though
Did this new air filter give you a few more horses ?
I don't have any before or after numbers but people on the forums saw some gains. There was no seat of the pants gains, but it has to be better than the stock one. Thanks for watching.
I put back my original filter. It's more cleaners job do than that aftermarket.. GM engineer not idiot to design that filter.....
Nice video dude but you would have saved time and a few hundred bucks leaving the old filter, removing the constrictive air box housing exposing the original air filter!!
It was free so can't beat free lol. Thanks for watching.
Interesting but a 5 minute video with 7 minutes of blah, blah, blah. I fast forwarded way too much. Please get one of your buddies to watch these first!
