If you listen to his lyrics he has been set free to go, but doesn't want to. He calls her a liar multiple times through the song and admits that he feels this song more when she is around. Also, 28:20 he says something along the lines of how friendship is more important than love.
My conclusion is that: they had a or some moments on set and he wanted to be more than just friends. However, she is in a relationship with someone so rejects him. He would rather have her friendship if she cannot love him back; therefore, [her] friendship is more important than [his] love. At the same time, he can sense the love she has for him. She insinuates it's a friendship love, but maybe she won't admit it to herself that it might be more than that and he is holding on to that hope.
