- Today’s video is going to look at my recent trip up top Kirkcudbright training area and the many tanks found on the range. Over a year of planning was needed to gain full access and we set out to find the lost tortoise tank as well as many other rare and unique vehicles that can be found on the ranges.
This video is for those who just like old rusty wrecks, or maybe model makers who want to get some colour samples or diorama ideas.
A big thanks to the MOD and the Kirkcudbright training area for the opportunity to have a look at these rare vehicles and to Peter Breakspear for getting this all organised!

I remember as a boy in the 1960's we used to go up to the ranges on the weekend and clamber all over those old tanks. Immense fun.The tanks were in much better condition back then.

I've done Kirkudbright with MLRS, however Otterburn/Redesdale was my main haunt (5.5's, L118, FH70)
I miss the Ranges (yeah a bit sick I know) but once you become a 'normal' person you don't get the exposure (pun intended) to the elements that you get up there in the Lands of the Red Flag.
This was a really entertaining watch, looking forward to further episodes.

Huh, I didn't know Amtrak had expanded to the UK.

@@terik3312 None, they wouldn't take quid. But joking aside, I took a look at train prices and the UK rail lines run about twice as expensive as Amtrak by mileage, which is shocking considering how expensive (and slow) Amtrak is compared to other means of transit in the US.

for the same price as this ticket i coudl cross the US or get a cheap flight to NY - we have horrficaly overpriced trains and they are often on strike as the drivers feel 80k a year is not enough
I live in Chicago, the literal railway capital of this country, and our Amtrak service is really only theoretical, since they basically sold off whatever they could to sustain their precious costal services. I hate to be rude, but maybe be grateful you can take the train at all.
Also whats with ScotRail using DMUs on fully electrified lines, what kind of maniac invests in electrification only halfway?

There used to be a Sherman hull on the Dreghorn Range in the Pentlands south of Edinburgh, that was 30 years ago.

Dorothy L. Sayers' period who-dun-it "Five Red Herrings" was set in Kirkcudbright, and the village and surrounding country remains largely as described in the book, making it a great place to explore for fans of Lord Peter Wimsey.
Don't forget the Wickerman as the filming bounced between Plockton and Kirkcudbright (ker koo bree), they would turn a corner and be 150 miles away, such is the magic of film😊!.

I live not far from the range, but unfortunately wandering over there is not favourably looked on, even more so these days, so have never seen the tanks, as you stated it took you a year, it's great having something like these on my doorstep, but sucks that we can't view them, will try to find the part two, hopefully you did😊.
Was just going to say where can I take my ww2 daft 8 year old to see these. I'm in Newton stewart so not far. But u guess getting onto the range is a no no

I used to live in a place called bordon in Hampshire they had a lot of tanks and lorrys on a big training ground where the reme used to be based and used to do recovery’s for training, as kids we used to climb all over these things hidden in the woods, I don’t no if the stuff is still there, but I thought I’d mention it in case u was interested,might be still some old relics.
All the vehicles were moved to lynham
Might be some forgotten bits snd bobs still there though, as it wouldn't be the first time a Tank was lost in the undergrowth ;-)

If I won the lottery, I would definitely go on the hunt for the elusive E 100. It might not be in the yard, but there are bound to be a few wrecks underneath the sand. Sadly the salt water may have corroded them.

Ahhh, reminds me of the good old days swanning 'round Catterick ranges, collecting LAW's that had missed. *Carl Gustav's were all practice, but the LAW's were live.

Peter breakspear is a great author and the tortoise that resides on this range, as well as Omani MBT’s and post war civilian owned AFV’s are covered in his well written and well laid out paperback book named Tanks.
Any news on the video on vicker’s MBT-95 designs? Looking forward to it.
There is only one thing less welcome in Scotland than the midges and that's an English man! 🏴 you were lucky to get out alive!! The things that you do in the pursuit of Tank History are an inspiration to all "Mankind"......

Im not sure if it was true or my parents telling me tales. On their range there was a supposed mk5 tank. Not sure if it is real but if there was it would be amazing to find it again Im still on the hunt for it today. Ive also found i think the last nimrod plane near where my profile picture was taken.

(and elsewhere... getting repeatedly lost in Wales in 2009 was a fun experiance, as was the random ice cream vans)

You;ve obvious never tried to ride Amtrak
Per mile amtrack is cheaper than British rail.
Cheaper in part due to less trains running on less track... as the US has been mostly Car & Air reliant, since the '60's.
Most US rail lines are for Freight, while most UK lines are for Passengers.
(Rail Freight having never fully recovered from punitive government red tape on the railways making road haulage cheaper by default [since the interwar era])
These videos are great and there's so much good info, but man, I almost cant hear a word you're saying. Some work on the audio levels might be in dire need. Just to hear what I usually do on other videos, I need to turn my laptop up from 30 to 80. Otherwise, keep the videos up!

What would be the chances of the Tortoise being recovered given its rarity?
extremely little and very very expensive
Tis an interesting engineering thought experiment, as it can't have been easy to place her there in the first place.
(though she probably rolled fairly well under tow when new)
If anyone did though, they'd need to own some seriously heavy duty equipment.
(such as a AVRE, a tank transporter, and probably a mobile crane too)
Probably would be more viable to take off all dismountable bits in-situ, and either attempt craning the hull onto a trailer of some sort, or getting real oldschool and using rotated logs underneath with an AVRE pulling to roll her onto firmer ground.

Crash rate is satisfyingly low though :D .
(none in recent years, if ignoring level crossings, which are hardly the train's fault)
Now Indian Railways... cheap, but terrifying...
British Rail......total shit, just saying from Glasgow 😁🇬🇧
Far worse exists at least... quite a few railways in Africa come to mind, to say nothing of India... which are cheap to ride, but fantastically dangerous.
