I've only seen bears on TV so I can only imagine what it's like having one mooching around your cabin. The way you're talking makes me think you are thinking of having it removed by some means or other. Is a sonic alarm an option, or a noxious spray device? I'm very interested to see what happens and I look forward to your next episode. It's obviously foremost in your thoughts so be careful and do the right thing.

There are obviously plenty of things that separate you from the typical RUclips channels but here are the big ones for me: First, there is no bad language, which makes it easy to share this with my kids in the first place. Most RUclips folks don't seem to understand that, and they lose a lot of viewership I believe. Secondly, you don't endlessly prattle on about liking, sharing, visiting your other social media, etc. That REALLY gets annoying quickly. We know all that stuff and if we want to do it, we will without being constantly told to do it. Thirdly, you are honest, normal, and not political at all. Thank you for all of that, and of course for the valuable bushcraft and outdoors content.

I hope your healing has come along well. I just got my third spinal surgery (second multi-level fusion) behind me a year ago and admittedly I’ve had times when I was in so much pain, I wondered what in the hell I’d allowed my orthopedic surgeon do to me. But everyday gets better and less painful as time goes. I’m a former gymnast, so I will probably have more surgeries but during those days when I’m having a hard time, I may know I’ll never be capable of building my own cabin, but I can get out in the fresh air, and be thankful I’m not in a hospital bed. God bless!

I've been watching these video's for a few weeks now and I really like the idea of building a nice simple cabin in the woods. What really struck me the most, this video, was the reflections at the end. I have so many friends who are borderline terrified of the wilderness. I didn't get to do much in the wilderness as a kid because my father passed away young and the women in my family just aren't the outdoor type. It wasn't until I was a teenager and made the right friends that I started going camping and fishing/hunting.
Now I am an avid outdoor's person and I find myself fortunate because I haven't had kids yet, but my older sister has. Especially her eldest boy, he and I have always been close and I started taking him camping with me when he was a little guy. Now he's in his 20's and a father, so now we go camping every summer and we have my great niece with us! It feels good because he and I have been so successful at rekindling that tradition and when ever he and I make the final plan for the week long camp out, we always start out with just he and I but by the time we get a couple weeks to leaving, we end up with anywhere from 4 to 10 extra family members trying to jump in on the fun.
Its really amazing for me because My nephew and I get to our camp and I can still remember him being a little boy, watching me set camp up. Now it's him and I doing it in tandem and we are so in sync with it. We can have a 10 man camp fully setup and ready to go, from barren ground to functional camp site, fire pit, tents, eating area, wood splitting area, washing area and day cover all in less than an hour. Clean up literally takes the same amount of time and you would never know people had been there. Seeing his growth and watching now as he shows his baby girl the same tricks and instilling the same outdoor etiquette really hit hard and hits home. I wish my old man could have been around to witness that evolution because I truly believe he would have been so happy to see that and be apart of that.

Hi Shawn. My Dad was an outdoor man and would have loved being a forest ranger. They owned a for eastern European standard fairly large farm with a deep forest and river running through it. I had an older sister but only he and I were incredibly close. He would take me [just he and myself] into the forest and explained the wildlife to me. WWII took my grandparents farm and also my father away. He died in 1945 in a POW camp in Siberia when only 41 years of age. I was 9 when I saw him last. But his love for nature is installed in me forever. Love your videos. There is so much calmness about you that is quite unique. Keep on keeping on and thanks so much.

Yeah man.....I can relate. My youngest son was nearly grown by the time I recently talked him into going backpacking with me. While I had the chance, I taught him some 'soft core' bushcraft/cooking skills, and he absorbed it all well. Just simple stuff.... Like tinder gathering, feather sticks, batoning, starting a fire in the rain, fast/easy tarp shelters, and such. He kept asking, "how do you know all this stuff"? LOL. I did have to deal with him being annoyed that he'd missed out for so long on the things you and I take for granted, but he was a good sport, and I felt about 10 ft tall for the 4 days. GOOD meals were a HUGE plus, and I think I opened his eyes quite a bit. THEN, on the hike out, he said, "Dad, I fully expected to be miserable, but when we can do this again"? I darn near cried.

It simply took me that long to convince him to try it once. Now he's 'hooked'. He and I have spent the last few weeks getting him 'outfitted' with his own gear. Also, his feedback to his Mom since returning just MAY convince her to join us someday. She really is a great gal, and I enjoy her company most of the time. (As long as we stay clear of politics and hunting discourses.....LOL). She actually did one HELL of a great job of raising our son. I'm proud of both of them.

I am on my husband’s account and discovered your videos two days ago. I am absolutely hooked. You are about the same age as my daughter. I gathered that from one of your other videos. Living in the USA, your videos provide for me a very calming escape mechanism from all of the political unrest our country is experiencing right now. If only my husband and I were 40 years younger.....what a dream! But, we can live that dream vicariously through your videos. ❤️🥰 I truly marvel at your incredible skills along with your expertise. I haven’t watched one video where I haven’t learned something new, and I am 70! May you and your family be blessed by the Lord. For whatever reason you chose to document your venture, I am certainly glad that you are doing this. Thank you!

What you’re doing is fantastic! I live in the UK but spent 4 years as a child living on an airforce base out in the majave desert. I used to spend most of my time walking out in the desert exploring nature. That was 40 years ago and have been living my life back here in the Uk ever since. Living the expected lifestyle. School, work etc.
I moved to the north of England 9 years ago and it has some beautiful country side. Places like the Lake District. Whenever I can, I like to take my granddaughter for walks in these areas of natural beauty. Sadly nothing lasts forever. She will probably outgrow our walks, the places we go could end up being developed for whatever reason? But they are moments I will always treasure.
Some people just don’t realise what is gradually being destroyed around us. Living life through an lcd screen or a nature documentary.
Sorry for the waffling but I have a dog beside me begging me for a walk, how ironic :)

My nephew's born and raised in Miami Florida, came up to South Georgia this weekend where I live, and I mentioned your Channel to them about how cool it is for you to be doing all of these things... I sat down this morning with my coffee and discovered this video. It was so ‘captivating’, I couldn’t turn it off. I love stuff like this. I’m a 49 year old male from Australia, I work as a video editor so I’m always sitting inside. We have nothing like this down under. It may sound weird but you do get fed up of so much sunshining days and living near the beach. I’d give my left arm to experience what you have. I’ve always dreamed of building a cabin in the wilderness but don’t know the first thing about it. Plus you’re literally half a world away. Love your video, I will be subscribing. Thanks!

NSW, lower hunter valley. As long as you don't want to be near anything posh there is good land at a decent price still. Water is a problem but it's Australia... of course water is a problem!

Dear God! I have camped all over Australia; with untold varieties of deadly snakes and spiders lurking. I have fumbled may way in the dead of night to answer natures call only to walk smack bang into the forepaws (claws?) of a male Big Red (Australia's largest and most aggressive 'roo). and I've tripped over a 3 meter python while collecting water at night. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could be more nerve wracking than camping with that enormous bear in the vicinity!
I was on the edge of my seat during this whole video! I was constantly imagining I could see movement and a dark shadow behind you Shawn. No.... give me a red belly black snake (deadly) any day. I always make sure to stomp through the bush, as they feel the vibrations and slither off (that's my hopeful theory anyway).
BTW - you have amazing talent with the visual (camera work) aspects of these videos. The scenery; the drone shots and different angles, and your editing skills create an almost unconscious plot. I'm a writer and I am seeing a story developing that perhaps you were unaware would happen when you began your project. And I so love the fact there are lengthy quiet periods as we watch you work. Less words can sometimes say a whole lot more. Haha! - unlike the length of my comment. Sorry.

Hi Shawn, loving your build and rambling philosophy times. I'm an outdoorsman in New Zealand self employed and connected to the dairy farming industry and once an owner. You talked about "detoxing" from town life and in that you put a word to my reason for fishing the heavenly streams in my area and guiding others into that same atmosphere. I appreciate the rambling discussion of ordinary struggles that we as individuals who love nature are not alone in this pressure of this juxtaposed existence In what the creator set before us and the created has concreted instead. Sense a kindred spirit.

First time watching your channel. Well done. I grew up in Wisconsin and did lots of boy scout activities eventurally becoming and Eagle scout and going to Philmont hiking for 2 weeks. You took it to a few levels more with building in a remote area. I really enjoy being able to buy an older house with a tree barrier all around and planted lots of small trees over that last 20 years. By doing this, I have had deer born 15 feet from my front door and have had racoons, foxes, squirrels and somehow a rabbit is surviving around here. The deer have become my lawnmowers and fertilize the lawn. I keep a bucket of water and a dishpan full of water. It is so educational to see the lives of these critters. I have had 13 deer of many generations in the back yard partying. It was like a big family reunion with fawns to 12 point bucks. The bucks showing off with pushing with their racks is impressive. Like teenagers showing off for the girls. Keep up the great videos. Cheers.
