As a Northern VA local, I used to do Old Rag several times a year before the permit system. Twice in the snow - once with the scramble, another time hiking the back way as an out and back without the scramble. Every time you have a shot where I know you have to go back and get the camera, set the camera and hike back makes me feel for you man! That’s dedication for the shot. I noticed you left out shots of the streams for the end of the loop. 😂
I wish I could have done more of that in a thru hike but it just takes so much time I did it a few times a day. On a day hike I've got way more time so anywhere I felt the viewers need to see something I filmed it. Those scrambles are fun! I hope some people decide to take this hike after seeing this video.
Once again, the Master vlogger presents his art…Thank You Jay! I’ve hiked that trail many times…you still managed to show me a unique and richly beautiful perspective!
Always beautiful simply put some of the best cinematography I have seen On RUclips you do such an amazing job not only with the cinematography but also explaining and bringing us along and seeing things through your lens keep it up care brother
Jay your videos are just fantastic, showing those beautiful colors as you hike was just awesome. So glad you are continuing to videotaping your adventures
Great video! Brings back memories of hiking Old Rag with my Boy Scout troop out of Springfield, VA about 47 years ago. Long before big crowds, impossible parking, and paid permits. Those were the days!
Skyline and Blue Ridge are Americana at its best. Nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Nice memories driving it and hikes adjacent to it. Enjoyed Jay's journey showed in this video.
Awesome video! Old Rag is such a wonderful trail. I've done it over 50 times in every type weather, never gets old. Thanks for doing it justice with you cinematography!
We used to climb Old Rag to go rock climbing in the 70’s. Great to see some of the familiar sights. I forget where I camped at Big Meadows when I sectioned the AT in the 80’s, but that campsite you pointed out looked vaguely familiar. The showers were very welcome… I do remember that!
Just a note for car camping. They make shower bags that when hung up in the sun warm the water. Makes a refreshing shower for car camping. Lover the views. Live near the Shanies. Thanks for sharing.
Yep, I have one but never used it since it requires so much water. I even have a collapsible bucket and a battery operated shower pump thingy but again they use a lot of water. I've come to just use a camp pot with some soap and water in it and a wash cloth for my field showers. Not the best but works pretty well.
I got so excited to watch after I read the title! I did the Old Rag loop as an overnight so I could hike to the summit and watch the sunrise. It was incredible and you got great footage of some of the really tricky scramble areas. I like your new hat!
This was so awesome to see! I liked that you mentioned how it compared to Mahoosuc Notch and Katadin I followed your(s & Tina’s 🥰) AT hike this year and in April, I did Old Rag with 2 of my brothers (only my 2nd backpacking trip) We were originally going to do Grayson Highlands. I watched your videos of Mt Rogers and the Highlands just before going and thought it’s really too bad the timing couldn’t have been right to meet you! You’ve really inspired me to get out there. But how can you not inspire people with your content and pleasant spirit!?? ❤🥾
Yeah, that was kind of interesting as someone who's never been to either. That is, very little chance I'll ever hike the AT...but I think about it and especially getting my legs over some of those rocks. Not that I think Old Rag would be anywhere near as hard as those but this at least gives me a comparison. Mid 60s so OR may not be as easy as I remember it.
That is a beautiful area. Thinking about it you basically hiked it three times. One time away from the camera. 2nd time towards the camera and finally the actual hike to film it. The Rangers missed out on 2 additional permits for your hike , we will not tell them. lol.
Awesome video as always, Jay! Beautiful Fall colors! I always cringe, when you are doing those seemingly impossible rock scrambles!!! You are the BEST!!! Thank you so much for taking us along! I hope your feet are feeling better!!! Continue to stay safe & blessed!🙂🙏🏾
Now imagine doing the same scrambles with one hand since the other is holding the tripod and camera. Those were tough! The camera survived unscathed but the tripod got a nice scratch on it.
Didn't know about the permit, thanks for the head's up. it's been several years, maybe five now but I've probably hiked it 30-40 times since the 60s. Did it as a boy scout back in the day. Yeah, it's pretty popular, on summer weekends it's a beach scene at the top with people just hanging out, sunbathing etc. Anyway, gorgeous shots of the clouds. I kind of liked the "boring" part, after doing the scrambling nice to just stride down the other side on Weakley Hollow Road and stretch out the legs back to the car.
Beautiful video Jay! I’ve been through Gettysburg and Antiem many times! Lots of History and very beautiful country! Thanks for sharing these beautiful sunsets and sunrises with us! God Bless you Jay. Stay safe and Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Jay, great video. I live in Virginia and SNP is my favorite national park. Just wanted to let you know in case are unaware… NPS offers the America The Beautiful annual park pass free for military veterans. I don’t think the Old Rag permit is included in that, however, it’s a great pass if you visit federal parks/lands frequently throughout the year.
Yep, got a disabled veteran pass some time back and recently picked up the military pass as a back up. My 1st pass got really warped while hanging on the windshield of the car at Joshua Tree NP.
If you want to do overnight backpacking trips you need permits for each camp site in the Smokies but not at Shenandoah. Shenandoah is nice if you'd like to drive along the ridge of the mountains whereas Smokies you have to hike almost everywhere.
Thanks for another beautiful video, Jay! Looks like this loop would be a good place to practice for some of those scramble sections in New Hamshire and Maine. 🙂
Definitely! Some of the parts here are pretty narrow as well so you'd have to take a full backpack off several times. You'll even have to get on all fours at least once so you'll get ready for Mahoosuc Notch!
If you go to the website, it says as of November 30, 2022 a day use is no longer needed. Been wanting to do this but every time I went to Shenandoah, I had my dog.
Love your cinematography! Can’t believe you walk most every scene twice…no wonder your feet are tired. Have a safe and happy holiday!

You're in my backyard! I love the rock scrambles on Old Rag!

This was one of the most beautiful openings . Skyline Drive is pure magic and you captured it. Your trip up Old Rag was magnificent. Thank you!

@@viadharmawheel in 70s we hiked and camped there often. Love it.

Outstanding video Jay. It's great to know some people are really living life.
Simply beautiful!
Brilliant, as always.

I love seeing nature through your camera lens. The cloud time lapses were breathtaking thanks for taking us along.
What a beautiful day for a hike. I love skyline drive but it looks a lot different now. You did a great job with the video and the pictures!
Beautiful hike! Loved every moment of it!
Great video, seriously. Drive on

Really great. Thanks for this! Enjoyed it 100%!
Beautiful!
Amazing area. We've been several times.
So glad to see your videos again! Just beautiful...thank you for sharing!
Thanks fir the inspiration.
Keep hiking and stay save out there Jay!
Jay, you missed so much in beautiful Connecticut on your way to New York

They did it right by charging just $1 and they have the $6 processing fee like some of the recreation.gov camp sites have.
I should say I'm kinda pleased you came back to Virginny to explore.

@@JayWandersOut thank you for this valuable information. That actually could make a bit different for us. Cheers! 💚 happy holidays too!

I think the Nov thing is because it's now off season. They'll probably reinstate it again in early spring.
i miss Tina!!! Where is she Jay?
Jesus loves you 🙏 Blessed day! Where is Tina?
Beautiful video, but ouch - that left foot pain looks really bad 😕🫤 I hope you've had it checked?
