I love how John innately knows which are his best songs and lets the audience hear them on a regular basis. I have never been disappointed at a Mountain Goats show, because they don't care if the best songs are old ones.
I remember when I first heard Mountain Goats, I was pretty shocked at their lyrics. Forgot about them for quite awhile, I dunno how long. Then I was watching Moral Orel and No Children played on it, and all I can do is say "Oh my god it's the Mountain Goats, on a pretty network, holy crap" Ever since then I hear them on bigger and bigger shows. So happy they get recognition, even if it's from these shows because this group deserves it.
first heard them on The Walking Dead, I really liked the song but I forgot about them for a while, I recently started listening to them again and now they're one of my many favorite bands
"This is a song when people talk about triumph over adversity "adversity" sounds like sort of a faceless sort of a thing that you don't actually need to triumph over so much as get around. This is a song about triumph over the adversary."
"You were cool"; brilliant performance. My son heard TMG when I made sure all five slots had their CDs when I loaned him the car for senior prom. This was on, in the middle of the song, when I got it back which I took as a sign that despite our best efforts, he'd gotten a good understanding of adulthood and that made me happy.
I always thought Cubs in Five was a cute little song from the opposite viewpoint of The Mess Inside ("I wanted you, to love me like you used to do" "I will love you, like I used to"), like, all these wonderful things are gonna happen and we'll be in love again...so beautiful... Then I realised it's one of the most hauntingly cynical songs I've ever heard, and what's worse is that it's telling the person in The Mess Inside that their hopes are worthless and that they will never love them again...
As a Danish Nerdfighter (and thereby discovering and becoming a huge fan of TMGs as well) it is perplexing, and also extremely flattering, to see the Danish flag on John's arm!
While everyone knows about how awesome John's lyrics are (and yes, by Jove, they are wonderful), can we take a moment to talk about the basslines played by Peter Hughes?? AND JOHN BLOOMIN' WURSTER ON THE DRUMS?! Oh it's all too good. Thank you, Mountain Goats, and thank you NPR.
I saw them up in Denton, and I was in the club they were playing in, and I was looking at some shirts before the show started and barely anyone was there, and I heard someone talking to a guy in front of me and I turn around and peter is standing right there trying to ask the guy where things were. I didnt move or say anything. Weird to think about it now.
I love peter hughes so much. The awkward dancing, the melodic bass playing, the kinda not perfect backing vocals that are actually totally perfect. Also the great suits
God the bassist being "over dressed" is so solid. I remember watching the Bouncing Souls show up in suits and ties for a punk show and it still makes me happy. You look good too John, lol :)
I cut my parents off two months ago because of the neglect and toxicity I've faced since being born. This song perfectly encapsulates how I feel. No regrets.
@@barmanova9363 It's a reference to the myth of the founding of Rome, which states that Rome was founded by two orphan's whose mother abandoned them, but then they were raised by a wolf and built an empire. I think the mother here is actually a reference to his abusive step father, and that the wolf coming home represents his chance to build a life for himself away from his father. It's also possible that the wolf represents his step father and that the "party" is actually a rebellion.
and the Tampa Bay Bucs will take it all the way through January... (especially now that they have Brady AND Gronkowski...) As a lifelong music fan (especially songwriters) I'm ashamed to say that I only recently discovered John Darnielle but I'm looking forward to a live performance this summer - he is the Dylan of the 21st century
Dear Atlantabrookyngal I still love The Mountain Goats music. Sadly missed opportunity to see them last year when they came to SF. Just wanted you to know I struck some more serial TV music gold in the form of Netflicks show WentWorth Prison. The viewer has to wait for Season two during the last three episodes don't know names and tittles of groups involved. But I'm under the impression the musicians are Australian and filled with musical surprises. check it outsurpringly good TV show.
What's beautiful about John Darnielle (apart from everything about him) is there's no editing behind his voice. He sounds exactly in concerts like these as he does in the albums.
The Walking Dead brought me here. Anyway 'I'm gonna bribe the officials, ...it's gonna take you people a long time to recover from all of the damage' loved that hahaha.
actually what the hell I just... oh my god so one of my friends wore glasses to school and looked, no joke, like a younger version of John Darnielle here. Sorry, just needed to tell SOMEONE, 'cause I just noticed. Continue. Do'nt mind me...
I love the mountain goats. John doesn't have the most perfect voice in my opinion, but that's why i love them. There seems to be a revolution of sorts happening in music where you don't need to have a great voice to be a good singer. Some of johns songs he practically talks the lyrics and it is much better than any song on the radio
Sean Cary That's what makes it so beautiful. It's so raw and untamed. We don't normally allow that kind of thought preaching forgiveness and so on, but here he let's them have it. A dark thought in sincere support of someone he loves. SO beautiful.
"a child is crying for cubs in five." i love you, john.
"We don't know that one as a group."
*plays it flawlessly anyway*
the drummer was clearly off
Nah. There's no such thing as a drummer being off.

@@BuyAnAxe Its more that jon had trouble keeping consistent time with the frenetic strumming pattern. The drummer was just playing around that.

Best songwriter of our generation, hands down
What about Timberlake?!?

@Ho Renomo what a weird comment lol. His latest album and then Goths from a couple years back are actually pretty good btw. I think he's doing fine.
@@willmccracken926 at this point the shows would be better if he only played stuff from 2017 onwards
Peter Hughes is such an underrated bassist. He's not the greatest bassist ever or anything, but damn is he good

MG are one of those rare bands who can make me laugh and cry all on one album.

I am going to see the mountain goats live if it kills me

This might be one of John's best concerts. You can tell he really brought his A game that day.

Nowadays, I gotta cling to this exact version of Up The Wolves sometimes. Gives me hope the world can improve.
