The REAL REASON Rob Morrow walked away from NORTHERN EXPOSURE!

  • Norther Exposure, starring Rob Morrow, debuted on CBS back in the summer of 1990, as a mid-season replacement show. It would stay on the air for six seasons and become very popular. The show was so popular that I was a little shocked when Rob Morrow WALKED AWAY before the final season was completed. In this video, I talk a little about the overall premise of the show and give my opinion on what the real reason for Morrow's leaving before the show had completed was. Thank you for watching!

The show had a sense of innocence. The characters weren't garish, the humour was light hearted and didn't come from insults or crass behaviour. There was a feeling of warmth that I wish I could find in the real world. Please bring this back in a mini series!

I've read about 300 comments on any number of videos and this is the first to squarely address Fleischman's absence in the 6th season, so thank you for that. Seems that he left the producers a bit in the lurch, and they had to scramble to come up with closing out the last season (probably to meet contractual obligations). 100% 💯 about the first 5 being magic. I'd love to see a 7th season, would it be aired on TV, on terrestrial TV stations? I don't know. And I think this particularity has some weight. Things may have changed too much. Maybe we need a Northern Exposure movie. We need a Northern Exposure movie.

Northern Exposure is my absolute favorite show of all times! It is so exciting to know that they are thinking about rebooting it. I would love to see how everyone is doing in Cicely today. For me, it is like a parallel universe where I can go to when I need to. I have watched it so much that I know many episodes very well. The one where the circus comes to town, every time Adam comes to cook, when Chris can stay in Cicely because he is so important to the community and the philosophical reflexion on identity, etc... For me it is a constant part of my life, I refer to the show on many occasions in my thoughts. It really is a landmark. Thank you for putting this video up. Rob Morrow is the sweetest on the show. Sometimes writers just run out of good ideas for characters. I feel like the problem has actually gotten worse in the past 10 years. I do the same with my set if DAD'S of N E as well as DUE SOUTH TV show and EARLY EDITION, the original cast of Northern Exposure would be a must, as possible to get most of the original cast for a reboot. As far as can see when Rob Morrow left the show to pursue movie roles, Acting is an art and a very demanding schedule and long hours, not your regular 9 to 5 position. And as far as Rob Morrow being hard to get along with ? It's either a big ego a type A personality,or the stress and demand of the filming or shooting schedule 12 to 14 hour days. Every body in front of and behind the camera needs a physical and emotional break I guess. The whole cast was great, a perfect fit, I've heard that the average run of a TV show is about 4 seasons, the exceptions BONANZA Gunsmoke Little House on the Prairie,

The show was a solid representation of the period. If you were young, newly married, and didn't watch Monday Night Football, it was perfect. I have noticed that almost no comments mention Morrow at all.
The single worst thing that could happen to the show would be to have it reboot. It was a nostalgic show about a dream America we all wanted to have existed before the 90s. It cannot be resurrected thirty years later, a nostalgic show about a nostalgic show, and succeed. That would be very "Let's Twist Again, Like We Did Last Summer."
Joel walking around and people saying "hey, remember how you used to get irritated back thirty years ago?" Or worse: "Dr Fleischman, I saved your old old truck."

They tried so hard to keep the new storylines going, tried to adapt to Morrow's departure, tried to make the character of Dr. Capra work, tried to fashion a new romance between Maggie and Chris. But it wasn't the same. The whole show really centred upon a) the Joel/Maggie dynamic and b) Joel's growth as a doctor and a human being and his slow, steady transformation into a Cicelian and when that was suddenly ripped out of the show it was like watching a bird trying to fly on a broken wing. It didn't work. As has been said here, the magic was gone.

So much nostalgia for this show. It feels like it's a part of my life. Seeing Joel leave was sad but I really loved the person he became in that last season. So wise and zen😂, very un Joel. I read that they originally wanted to do a direct swap with the new doctor and just pretend he was Morrow. But they didn't do this because it would be too insulting to the audience. They then re wrote the entire 6th season. It's been maybe 15 years since I last watched and now I want to see it again. I'd love to see a revival but as with most of these things I fear ir would fall short simply because it isn't the early 90s anymore😅

It was really the soundtrack that made the issue, this is why many versions of later releases have had songs replaced on the tracks. Those are known as being a bit offputting by some who remember some of the original and very well picked soundtrack. There was a release with the original soundtrack at one point, but the problem here is that due to the varied artists if a company like Netflix or other were to pick it up, they would have to pay royalties out to all the music for each episode and they cannot qualify the cost.

Along with Seinfeld and Frasier, my favorite 90s show. Very underrated, overlooked, and unique...thinking outside the box. Actors who look like everyday folks playing everyday folks dealing with everyday issues in a lighthearted, brainy, and quirky way. Not a big budget show but the authentic impression it created balanced that out.
I'm 41 and only memories I have of this show was from when I was about 10 and in 4th grade, late 1992/early '93. Was living at my grandmother's house in Connecticut with my mother and younger brother while my father was wrapping up his old job and starting a new one and preparing for our next home. Would come on Monday nights before I'd go to bed and only remember the moose, the theme song, Chris the radio deejay, and Joel. Being so young and targeting adults as an audience, I didn't really understand the show but yet was able to sense the light-hearted humor and likeability of the characters and of course, the moose. Enjoyed watching it without really understanding it.
Rediscovered it recently and lately, have been binge watching it, with a new perspective and although the show makes a lot more sense now, it's still a bit enigmatic. One of my favorite shows ever now and wish Rob Morrow would've been in more stuff; a great, likeable, and funny actor! The whole cast was great.

The show could have survived the loss of Morrow if it had been handled correctly. I know how I would have done it, but that's fantasy. The fact is the sixth season was an unwatchable train wreck because the producers had gotten too comfortable and didn't react decisively to Morrow's departure. The cancellation was a mercy killing and it's just a tragedy. When NX was on its game it was the best thing TV ever gave it; but when it came off the rails, it might have been the worst. I would LOVE to see a reunion/revival of some kind IF the script was solid. The basic idea behind the 2017 effort sounds promising. But Brand needs to write it himself.

I think Rob has mellowed out, or finally go the notion that he grated others with his personality. He has participated in several Northern Exposure reunions and seems to really get along with his old castmates. He did 102/110 episodes which holds up to him seeing most of the series to fruition. As to his contract, as agreed it stipulated incremental $12,000 to $21,000 bonuses over five years was either not honored by CBS or Rob just wanted more money as the lead character after his Golden Globe / Emmy nominations.
Yet the show was not the same with him absence.

Morrows character reminded me of the Frank Burns character from MASH. In my opinion, his character had fallen into a predictable pattern, and was trapped within the confines of that characters shortcomings. Always pining away for New York, while constantly complaining about life in Cicely, on the Cusp of the New Alaskan Riviera. While I did like the Fleischmann character, I do think the show could have survived without him as a regular. However, it seems the shows ultimate drop in quality in the last few seasons was due to issues with a particular producer, who did not like the show. That was what really did the show in, more than Morrows character leaving. The show had already jumped the Shark before that occurred.

I would have thought the rating were falling, he jumped, without the fish the series had a whole and the ratings plummeted. Then they cancelled. He was too busy or didn’t want to return for a final scene - where he returns to Cisselle and Maggie.

Northern Exposure is my favorite TV series of all time...bar none. (The original Battlestar Galactica is a solid number two) I have the entire run on DVD and still watch episodes from time to time, they never fail to make me feel good. It was unique and unlike anything else on television, both then and now. I do think that it peaked with the third season though, and after that began to decline and that it really had nothing to do with Morrow leaving or having a lesser role. I just think the writing and the storylines declined. I can recall the exact episode where it began to lose some of it's luster; Old Tree, the last ep of season three. I would imagine it would be very difficult to maintain the level of creativity and genius that was Northern Exposure for more than two or three seasons....

The problem with Rob Morrow was his EGO . Northern Exposure was a TELEVISION Series and Morrow saw himself as God's Gift to Humanity or in other terms a MOVIE STAR . A most successful Television Star from a long lasting series is moderation over time like Michael Landon . Instantaneous success comes with being a Movie Star whose every ambition turns into success from the very start . Rob Morrow has acted in Movies ... The vast majority of people on the planet has never seen any of those movies , He is most notably known as Dr . Joel Fleischman from New York City , N.Y., who found out that he had a legal contract with the small society of Sicily , Alaska . When he found out from the legal perspective that they ' owned his ass ' he reluctantly goes to Alaska and fulfills his obligations as the only medical personnel in the vicinity . Anyone with a ' serious ' condition has to be air lifted to Fairbanks , Alaska . ( Some hundreds of miles away ) .
So which is best for a nobody -- A Television program that runs for nearly a decade or more and is very successful or a 1 hit wonder that flops in Movies ? Rob Morrow , the nobody that was almost a success .

With the over exposure of Alaska in much of reality TV, I don't think a reboot would have the same feeling.

One of my favorite 📺 shows of all time. Too bad that legal issues keep it from being shown as reruns.

So True! I haven't even been able to find the series available for purchase in a digital format other than DVDs, which isn't my preference anymore. I prefer to by digital copies on iTunes or Amazon. I may have to break down and buy the DVDs though. Thanks for watching my video!

The show could’ve continued with a replacement Doctor, or just continued on its own merits with the rest of the quirky characters in the show! It was a shame the producers were short sighted to the continued successes!

Best show ever made right here (tied with Little House). When N.E ended I cut the cable & have not had it since knowing no show will EVER be able to match the beauty & quality.

Simple...Rob wanted bigger and better things. Funny how he's willing to come full circle. I loved this show.

Northern Exposure was one of my favorite shows. We even went to Roslyn Washington (aka Cicely AK), where it was filmed when we were nearby once. This was I guess about 20 years ago. They still had the Roslyn cafe sign on the one corner and a few other touches of the show. We also found it on DVD where my wife saw how good it was.

I hated the ending, Joel should have stayed in Alaska. I’d like to see him come back to Cicely to retire and tell folks how miserable he was in New York.
It’s a shame the show with its original soundtrack has never been available in the states on DVD or Blu, I had to order it from Germany to get the real deal.
