I doubt you were in at the time but I was one of the unlucky Vets at the transition from C-rats to MRE's. We had read the hype about the MRE's and were looking forward to them. What a HUGE disappointment. We were in the SW desert with low water access. The MRE's were virtually all dehydrated with the appearance of styrofoam. Eating them dry was extremely harsh and they tasted like styrofoam or worse. We went on a Surplus hunt and cleaned out the remaining C-rats dumping the MREs.
My father was a WW2 vet and served for over 25 years. He had eaten C-rations and K-rations. When I served I brought him a couple of modern MREs. His verdict, the MRE tasted better than the WW2 rations but were not as filling as a C-ration.
Thank you both for your service. My personal favorite MRE is no longer available but it was super filling. The Jamaican style jerk porkchop which came with butter noodles. That thing was amazing.
@@MREScout I've heard of that one but never encountered it. I remember I was deployed to Korea in 1977, and we were issued C-rations. My troops could hardly believe I was able to eat those. A lot of them were 1950s vintage. A lot of memories from the service.
- ... giving birth to MRE babies in the field. That had me laughing so hard. I heard Canadian IMP stack up nicely vs other nation's rations, you might want to give them a try!
Double S tier would be the French RCIR, German EPA (the older boxed ones, not the bagged new ones), and British ORP just for the sheer amount of food you get in them thats pretty good.
The last C-Rat I ate was in 1984, it was produced in 1946. It was still better than most of the first MRE’s we called them Meals Rejected by Ethiopians!

Great video and thank you for your service, even if the sponsor time was way too long for a near 8 minute video.
You should try the german "Einmannpackung" - or shortly EPA + british 24 hour ration + norway ration and the french ration too. They are all tasty and have three meals included. As a german it hurts to say but the french ration has the best reputation ;-) The norway one is a civillian trekking eating supplier and has a phenomenal quality. But you need lot of water for it (meals are dehydrated). In fact I like the american MRE meals but the ration itself is too big for its content. The german EPA (which is for a whole day) is even smaller in size then one MRE. Its very sad that many US bases in my environment are closed. So its now very hard to get fresh MREs :( Greetings from Germany
Was renamed this year from "Einmannpackung" to "Einpersonenpackung". And the EPA sometimes disappoints Americans, because it doesn't come with a heater unit or utensils. Both is part of the soldiers equipment, a folding reusable hexamine stove and the standard set of stainless steel Bundeswehr utensils (knife, fork, spoon in a holder that also serves as bottle and can opener). In addition to the mess kit which design almost hasn't changed since WW1. The hexamine fuel is provided to the soldiers by the supply NCO of the company, so also not part of the EPA. But the meals itself are quite good. Back in the old days the coffee was called "German neutron bomb: Human dies, the cup remains intact" by the Bundeswehr soldiers. But that is no longer the case.
My father served in iraq as a seabee. He passed away recently, and I've been collecting stuff from that era. I'm putting together a historical airsoft kit for OIF, but there's not much information on what soldiers carried, i.e., canteens magazines, et cetera. Could you provide me with some info that could help me put my kit together?
We pretty much stopped carrying the old school LBE and canteens in favor of the Mollie gear strapped directly to the interceptor body armor and camel backs. There's newer generations of this stuff now but I never once carried LBE or canteens in Iraq. Ammo punches were attached directly to the body armor, 2 on the left and one on the right to try to balance out the weight distribution because my weapon was on the right. War fighting gear to the front, support gear towards the sides and back.
I have a couple serious points to make about what I'd consider mistakes in this video. I think that your voice audio needs to be turned up 50%. I think the score chart needs to remain consistent in values and colour... And maybe explained a bit because I am still confused what that was about. The lack of fibre causing constipation is a myth. A diet too low in fiber and fluids and too high in fats can all *contribute* to constipation. Especially the low in fluids, that's the majority reason.
Been looking around for them. When I track some down, I definitely will. A lot of people seem to rave about the British rations. I've seen what they eat in England and personally I don't think it even qualifies as food but I'll try any ration at least once.

@@MREScout I certainly hope it's improved since the 1980's (everyone else's has). The only saving grace for the Italian ration at that time was the tiny bottle of Grappa type booze that came in it.
I think that the US "Meal, Combat, Individual" in the gray paperboard box should at least be on the "B" list, with points off for heaviness: Three olive drab flash hiding cans, one of which contains cookies that are baffle-wrapped so they can survive a parachute drop, two other cans of things like Beef Stew and fruit that can indeed be eaten either hot or cold, and the plastic packet containing: Damp- Resistant (but curiously NOT waterproof) matches, a four pack of smokes, chewing gum, toilet paper, toothbrush like cleaner thingie, the can opener, coffee, sugar, creamer, nylon spoon. Oh...and I forgot: The AWESOME hot chocolate pack that was seperate and went into I think 1/3 of a canteen cup. Actually, maybe that goes on the A list.
