im at it right now, the annoying part is that it is totally unfair those jumps + the enemies and their movement...they definitely should've changed this on the remake
@@tinahacks what i meant was that the original game had some parts that were not fair, that is, comparing to what we have nowadays on gaming. So i'd say it'd be a way better remake if they changed/removed/adapted some parts. I understand that this level of difficulty was "normal" and acceptable in the past, but not so much today. I also understand that the idea of the game is being challenging and etc, but i dunno, while playing it i sometimes felt like i was depending more on luck than skill
I think there's certainly a conversation to be had about difficulty in gaming and keeping the experience accessible to everyone - but the Unknown areas were max challenge rooms added to the game for die-hard fans. I'm not sure I understand what someone would want them to be changed into, since their purpose is to be harder than everything in the original game.
God that secret dragon-man level. I had no idea I should have equipped the magic sword to not break the blocks. I took me a long time to do that secret level...
Fish flying! Okay, so if you swim normally and you change the direction you're facing, the game has you gain just a little bit of height. The game ONLY cancels the swimming state if you jump (which is the only way you're SUPPOSED to be able to leave water). So you start swimming, and then alternate facing left/right. Depending on your mashing rhythm you'll gain height and momentum in a direction. On the remake, the easiest way I found to pull this off is to hold right on the stick and mash left on the dpad. Some runners have had good luck with hitboxes, but I was never able to get that to work well for me.
Not quite! The Unknown areas will always transform you into the form they're meant for when you enter them--this is easiest to see with the human form Unknown. Most of the Unknowns are either very difficult or impossible to reach as anything but their intended form, so it's tough to realize they trigger a transformation upon entering them.
I just finished doing the Extreme difficulty for this game (not a speedrun though) and i thought i was very good at this game just because i play it since my childhood, but you impressed me with your Hard speedrun 100%. Would it be too much to ask you for an Extreme difficulty run? I'd love to watch you do it.
Well I managed to get all charmstones and all equipments even on extreme, i thought that would be 100%. (Yeah it took... a LOT of tries, specially the Dragon Unknown zone where a single pig arrow would insta kill me or waste a potion) But hey i'd seriously love to watch an extreme run from you, even if it's any%.
Superb work! I got this game a couple days back and finished it earlier today. I thought I had 100%'d it, but upon watching this run I realized I'd actually missed a heart...so, thanks for the help, I guess! This was really fun to play; as for this run, a joy to watch. :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the run! Lizard Cube did a superb job of updating a classic and keeping it engaging. I think we can say you were close enough to 100% - the extra gear just makes the game easier, after all ;)
Just played through this on normal for the first time, took like almost 5 hours to 100% it... Got curious bout any speed runs, and wanted to see how skilled someone who's actually good at the game is :P I know this is an old vid by now, but still thanks for the content.
@@tinahacks It's definitely got that retro difficulty goin for it on some parts... Though going into the Daimyo Dragon as mouse with no Tas sword.... I was stuck there for a bit >_>;;

I haven't - I didn't go that way when I played blind, and I basically started routing the speedrun immediately after finishing the blind race I did of this game since it was so much fun. That's a good idea for sure, though! The fact that you can get dragon mail so early in this version makes the CP system in the original game make a bit more sense - it would gate the player from breaking the game by getting great gear early.
Why is 21:53 in *no major skips*? It seems like a major skip. But wow, cheers, I never knew this was this easy as a kid. Thanks. Are you sure hitting for one'ish damage isn't faster than cash-grinding?
Do I have a NMS VOD which has fish fly in it? It's mislabeled if so. 100% requires 100%ing the game, so I promise that while sequence breaking to make reaching 100% faster is used, 100% of the items DO get collected, and all bosses end up dead :) The boss which fish flying would NORMALLY skip gets fought at 44:28.
What is causing the chest to refill with gold over and over again is it only those two chests in the game that do it it's doing it for me I hope it's not something that's triggered that will stop it
It does, in fact - with the Tasmanian sword equipped, jump in the air, press+hold 2 on controller 2, and press 1 on controller 1. The remake makes it substantially easier to pull off, thankfully!
@@tinahacks ah I see. I was trying that with the player 1 controller and wondered why it wasn't working. Would this be beneficial against the final boss as Hawk-man is generally weaker than other classes?
Okay: so first off I'll note that you DO NOT NEED DRAGON MAIL to do this. However, taking damage will break the swimming state resulting in the timing being VERY tight. If you want to do it without dragon mail, wait until RIGHT AFTER you take damage, which will start your invulnerability frames. Now that you're not going to take damage: Jump, and then tap jump again to start swimming. Now you want to mash left/right alternately. The animation for changing directions while swimming (or flying - but this isn't so useful in bird form. You can just fly!) raises you a few pixels. So turn left - gain height, turn right - gain height. Rinse, repeat. If you can mash the direction changes quick enough, you can fly! This works from lava or water. If you use a controller with a stick and a dpad, holding one a single direction and mashing the other makes this easier. I know a couple of runners have had good luck with hitboxes (but you have to be precise since the hitbox will cancel to no direction held for L+R)
@tinahacks thank you, I'll try it again I actually did this before, years ago and flew over to the bird level and I forgot how. thanks. playing the ps4 version hopefully it's not patched.
On the switch it was really easy to accidentally find out since up presses would happen spuriously. So a jump+swing could inadvertently cause the transformation to happen.
Congrats on getting the glitch! Now that you can do the glitch, the next step is modulating how long you hold down right - if you tend to mash the right button with very short staccato presses then you'll drift to the left. If you push right for longer before letting up, that will change your trajectory.
That would be surprising; the devs expressed an explicit desire to NOT patch that out - it's a bug from the original game which they kept in _on purpose_. I can say with certainty that it still works on Switch; the way that I perform the glitch (which is still rather difficult) is to hold right on the stick and mash left on the dpad. Left overrides right, so you get the flight effect. Hopefully that helps!
No, you DO need to be in the swimming state, though. So the pattern is: jump once you hit the lava/water again, tap jump to enter swimming state hold right on the stick mash left with the dpad. The minimum required rate of mash to gain height seems to be around 8 presses per second once you're in the air. I recommend practicing the motion in the water near the beach before you try swimming in the air. Air swimming is MUCH harder.
Haha, there might be a slight difference in terms of total playtime, though. When you take that into account, 5 hours is really impressive! Congratulations!
Thank you for the compliment! I think it's easy to see every flaw once you've practiced doing something for hundreds of hours; my critique only reflects on how I wish my own play was improved.
Oh my god, seeing you nail the Mouse Unknown in one try... This level was hell.
