'The idea is the one thing that makes the track. Not the sound design, not the mixing, it is the idea! And if the idea is already bad, there is no point in finishing it... So first the idea: jam, fast prototyping... saves a lot of time' - Jon Sine 2020
Tottaly agree. This is the best approach that I know of! Generate lots of ideas, pick the best one and develop it. First idea often is not the best. I picked this up in a book by Twyla Tharp called "Creative Habit". She would pick a random object and make her students come up with 60 uses for that object in 3 minutes. It demonstrates clearly that first ideas are usually (not always, but most often) very banal. So yeah, this approach does save time and produce better, more interesting results. Wonder why it's not being taught in schools (maybe it is though, I'm just not aware), 'cause it applies to so many areas of life, not just art.
I like hearing other people's workflow, and I can't believe I never thought of making a big batch of quick sketches! I always enjoy these types of vids, thank you!
You’re really sharing gems here! 💎 How you talk about having the vocals and the melody work together is great. Imo this is what separates a beatmaker from a producer.
Truee. I feel that writing a good song first and producing it afterwards is such a time saver. Although sometimes the production/ vibe of the song inspires the songwriting.
I like the way with this fast prototyping. That’s mostly what I do and are left with no good ideas. I do store all my ideas and have a folder with unfinished and uninteresting tracks. And as a a hobby producer I have a lot of those until I find that one that I want to finish. It could take years before that happens. It took 1 song 10 years to be finished and than someone made a much better remix😂😂😂 of my track. I guess talent is definitely needed. Fortunately you had the vocal.
lyrics =If only it was that simple...See very simple 6:56. first version feels natural to me too. It would probably become more pop-ish with more, I don't know how you call them, vocal background riffs in some places like I can hear a little already. Good job. Danke
Follow up question for the video, how do you come up with the ideas for the prototypes? Making 10 prototypes would take me forever. Doing 5 or 10 in one day would be impossible for me.
Great video, I think. In the world of tech startups, we use the term "minimum viable product." It's the least work you can do that still demonstrates the important functions of the eventual product. You then shop this around to venture capitalists for funding. Same thing here: minium viable song. Is it worth investing your time and money in this musical venture? ☺️
cool songs Jon and thank you for the "trick" with the 10 songstarters/ideas... but... I think when you habe good vocals it's much easyer to make a good song (example: just put base, drums, chords and maybe guitar and it sound good!). What if you don't have vocals, just instumental..., you need much more ideas to keep the song interesting. What do you think about that?
It is a good track. love the 80s as it's the best melody and song era!!. The 1st might sound a bit on the cheesy side sure, but girls would love that tune. The problem is the direction of a-lot of stuff now a-days is too dark, with negative chords. When I wrote that I heard the second version, which is a nice sounding track which I agree could go with a different lyric song and vibe. The third is very nice... but it would be waiting for a more dominant beat so maybe blend the last one with the first one... which would mix it up and keep it interesting.
Everybody likes the first version more, but I actually like more the second version, because it's more alternative call & response track. Very original. The other 2 are more or less good versions too.
but how do we get these vocals! I know you have talked about it before, but as newer producers that dont have inger/songwriters approaching them, how do we find these? thanks jon
@Jon Sine!! you should buy or inform in incognito mode big artists and ask them for a ghost price or buy somethings would we great to see your response in a video!!! Definitely make a video about that!! Love ur videos!!
I'm not saying don't try it, but if it doesn't work for you that is normal, every creative person has their way of doing things, unlike Jon, I start with sound design, then start on the song, and I finish it without hitting brick walls.
So true. Now I use Mozilla Firefox as an app because there you can add u-block to block ads and it can be played in the background which is great. I'm really really annoyed by how many ads RUclips forces into every video. Especially since this year!
imo mediocre idea with great sound desin and mixing is way better then the other way around. There's just something to it if you listen to a full sound. On the other side I think it is more important to focus on ideas, because the technical stuff comes with time.
You know, as a photographer you take 100 pictures and keep the 3 or 4 best of them. Makes you look like a genius. lol - To think that the engine for all your productions is this little M1 Apple: That's really astonishing. 🙂
Interesting. Do you allways have tune to start with? Chords and recorded vocals (Melody). You nerver actually writes a Song? Because that needs a totally different process - Then you record the vocals to fit your song based on your melody and harmonics....
Dude. That 80’s style one SLAPS!
I like the first one ...feels like natural..its a Hit Song
that one was sick
Yep. 1 was most natural and already sounded like a hit. Agree
@@mikelo303 yes
agreed
Agree!

For me it was also a long path, really enjoy your open mindset and sharing your approach!
The fist version was the banger!! 🔥🔥
Me vibin: 06:45
Jon : It aint that good
Me: oh *reopens all of my "finished" projects for further development*
this was the best version but yeah i understand what sine means by not up to the mark bt I would really really love that version
I came to the comments for this
exactly😭😭
Good that you're not selling your soul to people who don't care.
This is why all great songs need remixes.
Especially when they cross different genres because you will get more fans that way.
The first version was awesome!!! Don't complicate it, keep it simple😊
The first version is so good!
Nice approach! Thank you Jon!
Hey Jon First version Is Best , Because 80s vibe and Vocals Are Fit perfectly.
Nice insight in how you start your songs!
I love these videos and they somehow help me as a producer
Good on you Jon for not selling out and promoting stuff you don't believe in. If only other people were more like you!
Thank you for your tips! Love your channel!
Nothing but love for you bro 🙌🏾🙌🏾❤❤❤

This approach will improve a lot of people. Someone had to make me aware of this. Thanks mate!
Man, is so good finding people with values and integrity!! Love your channel, I have many of you sample packs. Keep it up ❤️🔥
the 80s version was damn cool brotha
Supported Jon :)

Studio color lights made me feel better 20%😌💙
How good do those LEDs look! 😍
I actually liked the first one it sounded good. Alternatively the thirs version is good if you include the drop from the second version trust me.
thanks for this tipp, makes so much sense
Question! How do you get vocals? Do you have them written ? Do you send an instrumental for the vocalis to sing over? please explain!
Both + I also record a lot myself on session except for this year
Time to be *that* guy... This is huge and exactly what I needed now. Thank you Jon Sine
Jon the first version is already a hit homie
Damn thanks for the love bro.... You made my day. Merry Christmas
Thanks for solving my problem I was stuck with this 👍
I really loved this video, thanks for those great tips Jon :)
good advice

Brian Case yep. In the music world this is what we call demos
I really respect ur choice jon...but the first one is a hit...♥️♥️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Part of the reason that 3rd prototype worked because you were hitting the "home" with emphasis on a key syllable in the vocal.
Keep the first version! Listen to your subscribers. You wil be a millionair and go viral on Tiktok with that version😂😂
I love the 3rd version...
such a nice advice :)
First version was the best imo
This guy is a legend
Jon , please make a video on your vocal takes 🙏

brought your new sample pack.
Cheers, have a good day
Cool video 👌🏻
Random but that coat is fly like the content by the way keep it up!
I agree that the 3rd one is best
I think it would be cool to do several versions and put them on an EP as remixes.
Everybody likes the first version more, but I actually like more the second version, because it's more alternative call & response track. Very original. The other 2 are more or less good versions too.
Maybe Vanessa can help to decide :)

If not a secret, which plug did you use for the bass in that short intro featuring your song? It's got that nice growly sound. Diva?
Serum layered with a percussion
@@Jonsine Ah yes, I hear the percussion now. But I like that round growly sound. Serum? Nice nice. :)
the first one is much more fun!
The first one😍😍😍😍 release it for us please🥺🥺🥺🥺

Same here
Did you record that vocal and collab on the writing of the lyrics or did the vocalist just send it to you?
Jon, think twice. The first version is already a hit, finish that one!
0:03 I need some LED background :)
Anyone else approach making beats this same way??? I used to and stopped, but I'm going to start trying it again.
I kinda think 1 and 2 are really great haha but it’s just personal preference
I hate to say it but I’m almost done with RUclips because of the ads...you can’t even watch a video without being interrupted! New platform time!

@@osmana213 yeah but i mostly watch on my ipad!
I prefer version 1. Got the groove.
80s one for sure
Corn and Chickpeas. That’s dedication.
The one I like the most it's the pop one (first)😅
🌽🌽🌽🌽 is the 🗝️ for such nice 🎶🎧
That first version tho... 😂
I like the 2 one, but i see a lot a people like 1, maybe for the second drop or other track, please don’t kill the project!!

Song at 6,54 is the bEST I EVER HEARD IN THIS CHANNLE...DO THAT... If you don´t like it pass it to me.
i could record you some guitar if you want
Komischerweise haben meine Kiechererbsen von A. heute auch komisch gerochen.

Usually I do sessions and record with singer songwriter but due to Covid not. But the approach stays the same.
