The Underlying Causes And Solutions For Women’s Hormonal Imbalances

- Hormone imbalances are epidemic these days. For example, symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), like mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, fluid retention, bloating, breast tenderness, sugar cravings, headaches, and sleep disturbances, affect 75 percent of women. But just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you have to live with these symptoms.
The real fact is that suffering related to menstrual cycles is unnecessary. You might never know this from conventional medicine, which seems to subscribe to the idea that women are destined to suffer throughout their reproductive life and beyond. However, there are actually many things you can do to fix hormonal imbalances.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating hormonal imbalances in women.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

So meditate, eat broccoli, nix sugar, make sure all meals are balanced fiber, fat, protein, exercise, get good sleep, throw in some flax seeds, and if you can afford one find a functional medicine doctor you trust. Got it.
If I could find a good functional medicine doctor, I wouldn't be on RUclips self educating myself! 😂
And have an endless supply of $$$ to do this. I’m up at 5am looking on RUclips because I can’t afford FM. I tried.

He's smart and straight talking.
So refreshing, so many specialists are talking crap but not him I don't think.
He's the truth right now.
Thank you so much for talking about this. I've been struggling for over 10 years. I went through peri-menopause and menopause which I did cold turkey, (gained about 20 lbs), and I am now having post-menopause symptoms. I had two operations for cysts on my ovaries peri-menopause, it was ugly all of my symptoms. But, I am better, working out again and working on my diet (keto intermittent fasting), sleep, etc. I did suffer a bit of hair loss. I don't drink alcohol at all. I am feeling much better lately. I've lost weight but need to lose a bit more. I just bought a bunch of supplements after listening to one of your other video's.
I'm so thankful we have you fun tional medicine drs.we are blessed.we didnt have all this info .40yrs.ago.thank god we do now.

Doctors kept me on the pill for over 10 yrs. I had to beg to come off. Listen to this woman, they kept me ignorant. I was diagnosed with PCOS by a Rheumatologist from an MRI to figure out the pain just 3 yrs ago. I never heard of PCOS before, even though I was seeing a gyno every year for 30 yrs. Six months after, I got a breast cancer diagnosis. Stay healthy ladies
Do you think the BC is linked to theee issues?
How are you?
I did not know why I was unsubscribed . Missed this important message. I have those symptoms. Heavy period , hard to sleep. My Gynaecologist only gave me pain killer not treating the root cause. Until one day I was in pain and listen to healing vibrations Chanel singing bowl playing. Suddenly something was lifted up. I felt no more pain. That was the time I realised my pain was not from uterus only. I have to manage my stress as well. This video gave lots of good information and suggestions. I am now doing exercises regularly (super slow jogging with metronome on - to regulate hear beat not feeling tired after long run) .also doing intermittent fast. Eating healthy. Hope I can reverse my whole situation soon.
I love this podcast!!!!🥰
Very informative and helpful
Expected more. What type of suplements you recomend?
I am listening to this because I have suffered with horrendous cramps and pms for more than a decade. It started after my last kid 12 years ago, so in my late 20s. A few years after he was born, everything got so bad that I had an ultrasound done. Nothing "abnormal" except maybe some scar tissue from c sections. I was on birth control for the pain for 8 years until it stopped working. A new doctor in a new state did an ultrasound and found adenomyosis, and said that a hysterectomy is the only cure. I opted for an ablation, and I'm two months post ablation and post birth control, and I'm still crampy and now super moody. I'm listening to all of these podcasts to see how I should change my diet, and looking into functional medicine. I do chiropractic, but I don't think it's enough. So frustrating that they all want to throw meds at us, artificial.hormones, but know nothing about diet and toxins.
Have you tested your hormone levels? Might be estrogen dominant. Dr. BERG here on YT has an amazing supplement for lowering estrogen. He also goes in to detail about the hormones. Im very sorry your suffering. I hope you find relief soon.
I did use DIM supplement, detox, probiotic, wild yam supplement and primrose and now I don't take painkillers anymore and no pms .
Good luck it is possible. I had very painful pms and period and heavy bleeding
Why everybody say do meditation? How about prayers, i am Christian not buddhist
Try meditating on God’s word. Psalms 119:15, and so many other Scriptures talk about this. Meditation for a Christian is thinking about God and pondering His Word. I hope this helps!
@@marycarmendavi1045 Thank you dear:)
Meditation isn’t about religion
Prayer is a kind of meditation
Meditation has nothing to do with religion.
Hi guys! Thanks so much for a fantastic episode. Can you please give me your thoughts on organic soy milk? The ingredients are: organic soy beans, tapioca syrup , sea salt, Job’s tears (hato mugi), calcium carbonate. Popular brand used in Australia. (Bonsoy)
They need to start asking and screening for PCOS
I would have loved to hear what she has to say about this topic. Too bad some bloke keeps interupting and lecturing her.
I had atypical endometrial hyperplasia. Dr. Said it’s a precancerous cells. Had several biopsies and taken birth control pills and injections. Won’t go away until I took 6 months of high progesterone and finally got rid of it. But after 2 years, I developed breast cancer. Such a tiring process. Everything leads to depression and anxiety, so now I’m taking anxiety pills for 10 years. I hope to be off-meds one day, even if the pills helped me a lot especially with sleep issues.
Soy confusion cleared very aptly
Because we work non stop and live in a toxic environment

Superb !!! So valuable. Thank you so much 🙏
I have this problem and one traditional doctor told me that I need birth pill because "that's the treatment". However, my so called functional (I don't think he knows it) told me there's much more beyond my imbalance. So he started by helping me deal with my stress, anxiety and the reactions of my autonomous nervous system, and I've been getting well
How are you dealing with your stress and anxiety?
@@ericaciuffreda1606 First, exercise (3-5 times a week), relaxing music, raw foods (he explained that what I eat can affect my mood and other things) and I'm using Neurexan from Heel labs to deal with the parasympathetic response of my body). For me it also works: singing, reading, talking to some friends, watching funny movies and most importantly praying to God when feeling stress or just beginning to feel like blue. There's no single way to deal with stress as there's no single way to get healthy. Try as many useful things as you can and check how you react to them.
Dr, Hyman! I eat healthy, very active, don’t drink or smoke BUT had a very stressful few years & that totally threw me off balance with everything & now all of a sudden since last yr i have multiple health issues. Me too...I developed breast cancer. Was on the pill for a decade. I had to beg to get off them. Modern medicine is incredible sometimes, but there's the other side where they medicate vs getting to the root of a problem
I really like this video so genuinely expressed the information. Dr. I want to know how can we take cruciferous vegetables if we have thyroid issue. Please reply

What about what herring does to a person? I have the diagnosis of metabolic acidosis. My legs are swollen and bumpy and red changing patterns. Just when I think they are going to heal finally, they become bumpy and red again, but draining more fluids this time. My legs have 5 wounds and are constantly draining so much fluid I have to change bandages 3 times a day.
I am having a hard time deciding what foods are causing this. My diet is organic green leafies and cabbage and organic tomatoes and herring and eggs. Sometimes iceburg lettuce with grated cheese and bits of processed ham, but not to the extend that my legs should be bothered. I am thinking I will have to drop the herring next. There must be a lot of hormones in fish. I dropped the eggs for a while but nothing changed. I am not exercising that much, especially compared to when I used to ride a mountain bike everywhere. I can't exercise more because I am in a wheelchair from loss of cartilage between my leg and hip bones. I have read that eating a lot of acidic foods are the cause, but I don't eat processed foods anymore except for those bits of ham sporadically. I should have healed by now.
Otherwise I am healthy.
Mark, you talk and interrupt way to much! Something to think about, I don’t see you doing this to men you interview..... ps I love your work, but these interviews with your colleague highlight this so much! We want to hear what she has to say!
Just finding this video. I was on birth control for about 5 years; on it I didn’t suffer any crazy symptoms, however coming off of it last year (age 21) I went on a downward spiral of issues such as intense nausea, light-headedness, headaches, nearly passing out, sensory overload with my ears, virtigo symptoms, and GI struggles similar to IBS. Been to multiple doctors and my GYN doctor said she saw no issues. However (nearing 6mos off birth control) and I’m still dealing with nausea, IBS, virtigo, light-headed, and head pain, and dealing with extreme fatigue when on my period. Still looking for someone who isn’t just gonna give me pills to treat my symptoms. (Side note: never had any health issues/problems prior to stopping my birth control)
Video was very informational. You taking any new patients lol ?
Fyi they kept me on birth control from age 14 until I begged to get off them at almost 30...diagnosed with breast cancer at 44. I had just found out I had pcos 6 months before. Doctors never told me, never even heard of it. Such a shame 😞 keep doing your research
Look for a functional medicine doctor to help you find the root cause of your symptoms. BC often depletes your vitamin and mineral stores
Check your vitamin D levels
Here’s a gold nugget from a naturist/cancer doctor: all those weird symptoms are caused from your body not metabolizing hormones well, that is, not detoxing well, not removing excess hormones well, solution: you need to take Axis Endo by Metagenics, eat more vegetables and clean protein, not fried stuff; also cleanse your liver with milk thistle or a liver cleanse formula. The liver is the master gland that both creates and cleans up excess hormones in the body: insulin, cortisol, thyroid, reproductive hormones. They all influence each other but it all starts with making sure your digestive system gets proper support. Starting with not eating toxic stuff which overloads your liver, taking digestive enzymes with your multi-vitamin for max absorption, take ground flax (omega 3) to reduce inflammation and has fiber to clean the colon.
I was diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia EIN and I had an IUD placed on my uterus last month to deliver localized progesterone. Doctor will check me again in July to see if precancerous cells are still in the uterus. I'm almost 34 and I'm overweight. She said this is from the high levels of estrogen likely due to my weight. I don't have kids yet so they're trying to preserve fertility with the IUD treatment instead of the recommended hysterectomy right now. She said regardless if the IUD works I'll still need my uterus removed in the future (once the kid situation is figured out) because this condition will come back once progesterone treatment is stopped. What resources do you recommend? I would LOVE to not need a hysterectomy! I would LOVE to be able to fix this naturally! But I haven't the first clue on how to go about this other than lose weight. Please help!
Get rid of all processed foods, grains, dairy 🥛, go low glycemic, eat a keto-paleo diet. Insulin resistance and fat BOTH cause high estrogen. You do not need a hysterectomy. Your uterus is not the problem. The metabolic dysfunction you are living in is caused by diet.

I heard having a child could be protective against breast cancer. You sound like your headed down my path which led me to a breast cancer diagnosis. Change your diet, walk a lot. Do whatever you can to balance your hormones. I was on the pill for over a decade. Best of luck
Good grief, let her speak.
Hi, I just recently got diagnosed with PCOS and have been off birth control for three years. I was on it from 16 till 26-ish. I’m 29 now, about to be 30. I’ve been feeling like crap for the past couple of years, my periods are light, mood, swings, anxiety, depression, acne, common, random hair, excess belly fat, and literally all of the symptoms above. Is there anyway I can get in contact with the doctor? My endocrinologist just wants to put me on birth control or the metroformin, but I believe it’s more gut and environmental related.
I've had the exact same symptoms, now it's migraines added and sore throat which apparently can be a cause of hormones.. going to speak to a doctor and get the ball rolling because I can sort out the healthy eating, life style ect .. but it surely can't just only be a lifestyle change then suddenly I'm cured.. there's gotta be something a doctor can give me to help.
I ❤ u nat sciver brunt batting. My eyes broken my hand awesome.
Does obgyn can treat hormonal imbalance?
I love bread. How about home made bread made of 100% whole wheat and sourdough? Will that be fine? I have no gluten intolerance as far as I know.
16:40. Regarding Soy. You want the Whole Soy NOT the industrial soy
Specifically soy-milk (unsweetened) counts in the “industrial foods” soy category, is that right? …thus cancer-causing not cancer-preventing?
The thing with birth controll pils is having to get them, take them everyday for years, how they numb your emotions, migraines. A lot of docs give them as no harmful but its a not a cure and it does afect other parts of body and life.

Just my two cents. Fermented soy is always better like miso. I would look for the organic soy sauce because soybeans are heavily sprayed in the US.
Primary doctors are critical for one’s health. Some are good but some just wanna collect money don’t give ***t
I am just wondering who can afford their prices?! Initial consultation is $2,500!!!!!! Are you for real?!
Intermittent fasting is the key!

Why is he talking... let her talk she’s the women
Hahaha - good one
Good information. However this did not address menopause and serious symptoms like dry vagina. The only treatment that has really helped me to feel great, and that absolutely works is bio-identical hormones. Eating broccoli or taking a supplement will not help with the real menopause issues. Also, my best friend is estrogen; progesterone is necessary, of course. Our bodies make estrogen naturally from the age of 13 or so, and the cessation of estrogen and progesterone (plus thyroid) is what makes us miserable. Nature did us a dirty trick; at menopause Nature wants to get rid of us. No amount of soy or meditation will help. Sorry.
How come you interrupt your female guests more than the male ones you have on your podcasts??? I like the topics you speak about but let the interviewee talk.
I've noticed this so much on this episode. Dr. Hyman, let your female experts speak just as much as your make guests.
Could it be that he is a male and more excited and engaged with the females? Just a thought, it maybe a natural human response.
So difficult to listen to this with you interrupting her all the time. Why invite the woman on and then not let her speak?!
