Cillian should seriously get an Oscar for this one too. The end of the movie is so heart wrenching. You have no idea what happens. The Magdalene Sisters is another film that takes on those depraved, cruel, nuns. This film is softer, but no less frightening.
Omg. I started bawling at the end when you said who you made this clip for. I thought this was fantasy/drama. 😢😭 And to think this was an example of just one girl. 💔 My heart feels broken
healing energy to all those girls and women, that were finally freed from those twisted nuns in those wretched places. some were "freed" through death, like the mass grave they found in the mother and baby home in tuam. r.i.p. many of those girls were there because they'd been abused, which, according to those in power then, the church, was their fault - when it never was.
Wow this is a true story so sad! Shame on the Catholic Church! I’m pregnant right now and I can’t handle so much I can’t imagine doing labor evil judgmental people, what you did wasn’t what God wanted. He is merciful kind FORGIVING and compassionate. What is wrong with people. Dang I’m mad!
Women weren't unequivocally allowed on US juries till, finally, 1994, when a prosecutor used all his strikes to come up with an all-female jury. There'd been court cases for decades, but prior to the 70s, the mere idea of women on juries aroused raging contempt.
Yet many men (of all kinds) will still scream that women are absolutely equal and have zero entitlement to anything like “reparations”. Not that this is a functional solution to anything, but the historical injustices of women are just outright dismissed.
those magdelene laundries were evil , and as you said, 1998 is not even that long ago for that to be going on. the government gives a repartition of some measly amount to them, something like 38 a week -i could be wrong on the amount, either way, it's not enough for the torment they were put through.
Citizen - the issue is global and it’s a male-focused problem. Certainly women having multiple abortions before they’re even thirty - as if it’s literally just birth control isn’t a viable solution either; many women are even causing themselves serious bodily harm and sterilizing themselves by doing so (despite there being a great deal of access to various forms of genuine birth control, including FREE from public health sources in many regions).
And far too many over there are in denial there's a problem with going ahead on such cruelties, some have told me it's perfectly fine and legit to arrest a woman for miscarriage as they consider it the 'abort-word' even if it was unintentional.
It just pains me to see and learn of what the church has done in the name of Christianity. There has been documentation of babies and children killed or sold by Nuns. And, the Church covering up these acts. Doesn't the Bible, GOD's WORD, teach of grace and mercy. Baby's are born innocent.❤❤❤
Yeah there was documentary about that centred on Italy and how The Church stole children from their mothers and then adopted them out to the States. The mothers didn't consent to giving up their children, they were either tricked or lied to about where the Church was talking their kids. In some cases, the Church lied and said they died, so the mothers wouldn't look for them. One of the sons, now an adult, reunited with his mother in Italy decades later and told their story in the documentary. His mother had been unmarried and the nuns took him away saying it was temporary. But they adopted him out, changed his name, and claimed he had died. His mother didn't believe them and had tried to find her son, but as he was sent to another continent, she was unsuccessful. Apparently she campaigned for years believing he was still alive. The son as an adult went looking for his birth parents in America, backtracked his ancestry to Italy, and this was how mother and son were reunited.
The very fact that you have brought this tragedy to light is phenomenal. May we pray that these types of institutions never exist again.
Good people do good things, and bad people do bad things. But for good people to do bad things, it takes Religion.
This was so sad. It's still the case that women are far more likely to be punished for "indecency" when their male partners rarely face punishment
Cillian Murphy is a top class actor. Really looking forward to 28 years later

That was a long time that the place was open for. Long suffering. May the girls and children find peace.
Curious to know how many of those children were reunited with their mothers. Surely some of them found a way, despite the efforts to separate them.

The thing that scares me is the USA seems to want to mistreat young women like this again .
They aren't the only ones though. Every misogynist on the planet would watch this, and get sentimental about the good old days.
