I've lived long enough to see "Lunar" go from being a big freaking deal in the gaming world to a forgotten relic kids today know nothing about. So this is what being old feels like, eh?
Was it ever a "big freaking deal" though? I wish that was true. If there's a game that truly deserves a resurge it's Lunar and imo it was always underrated anyway.
As a huge Lunar fan, I highly recommend the PSP remake, “Lunar: Silver Star Harmony”. In my opinion, it is one of the best versions of the original game. I only wish that “Eternal Blue” had gotten the same love and treatment.
Very late response I know. I've played the original on the MegaCD, Playstation, GameBoy Advance, and the PSP. The latter is by far my favourite version of the game. Yes the loading between each screen can be irritating but the soundtrack, visuals, and voice acting all make up for that. Weirdly I've found that most people consider the PSP version to be the worst version of the game.
@@voteDC I couldn't get past the battles in the PSP version, they were awful. It played completely differently because of the weird zoomed-in rendering.
@@clanpsi If you don't like the zoom on the PSP version then I advise never trying the GBA version where that is even greater. That being said the zoom never bothered me on either of the portable versions of the game. It is a necessary evil given the size of their screens.
The PSP version is fantastic in all regards except one and if you can deal with it or not notice it the better. The battles pause a little when using a special attack or magic spell. I got all the way to the part where Kyle breaks free of his stone form to save the team before I noticed. I stopped at the blue dragon cave because it bothered me so much.

Thanks so much for making this video, it sheds light on what happened well. The first two Lunars are my favorite games of all time because of when I first played them at my young age and the impact they had on me. I replayed them both during the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, and they have since inspired me to change career paths and become a game developer. I want to make games that inspire people like Lunar has and will always inspire me. Cheers!
I love Lunar. Top 5 RPGs of all time for me. I remember first playing it at my cousins house & was amazed by the "anime" cutscenes. It was such a treat back in the 90s when the only anime you got was whatever Cartoon Network or Toonami decided to put out.
I remember writing up a story for Lunar 3 about 20 years ago. I called it the "Blue Star Story". It was about 2 friends, Erick and Terra, whose village's ground was turning from lush vegitation into barren sand rock. At the same time, Terra's hair was beginning to turn blue. They left on a journey to find out what was happening, only to discover that the same desertification was happening everywhere. They came to find out that Luccia's restoration of the Blue Star was complete, and life was draining from Lunar, turning it back into a lifeless moon. Terra had been chosen to lead all of the people back to the Blue Star, as Luccia wanted to finish out her days with Hiro. I thought there was real potential in a story like that.
I literally just got Lunar 2 downloaded on my phone and am playing it with an emulator. The memories, I loved that game so much, it was so good and is still good today
Still remember playing these games in high school. Man these are such great games. Its so sad they've been forgotten. I feel like I might like the Eternal Blue better than the first!
*"Released only in Japan"* there are so many games that only released in Japan. this was one of the main driving factors behind why I learned to read Japanese.
Lunar is a classic series; one of the best RPGs there is. (This one leans more on the remake than the original Sega versions) Even though Eternal Blue is an improvement in terms of gameplay, I still love and consider Silver Star Story to be the best. I love the characters and story. There was a time that I wished Silver Star would have an anime adaptation. Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue complete are the Lunar games I played (though I played Silver Star Story more, including Silver Star Harmony). Anything after that, I didn't get them and have no intentions to (didn't get Lunar Legends, Magic School and Dragon). To me, they lack the compelling story and magic that Silver Star and Eternal Blue had. Sad that the Lunar series had to end.
Damn it why can't we get a Switch port or SOMETHING?! This series was so vibrant and dramatic! I swear the damn thing helped me learn what a good redemption arc looks like. Pretty sure they were giving them away in the latter half of Eternal Blue.
If a switch port ever came out it be of silver again for the nostalgia effect with a HD remaster that honestly would sell very poorly. What they need to do is give lunar silver a complete remake in 3D format in today’s graphics and it would sell like hotcakes in the same fashion ff7 remake sold but loads even if the combat system was utter trash

Also, I would love to see a masterful recreation of "Eternal Blue" and "Magic School", finally officially released in western territories, on modern day platforms. Not for nothing, they've done "The Silver Star" to friggin death by this point. I don't think I can stand to take that adventure with Alex and Nall even one more time. To anyone reading. I have made a fair amount of fan story premise for a lunar 3 having Nall as main protagonist making it his story of in between lunar 1 and 2 dealing with loss finding new friends and growing as in dragon years an early 20 something anyone willing to read ill send it to. Things id like from fans as I hope to send to game arts as a package to make a sequle would be a someone who can write a compelling villian and ending keeping the Dalbec name and mythos in tact as is a canadian folklore, any sort of concept art for before and after the armor upgrade, a translation to Japanese maybe some test code of a battle simulation. I believe octopath traveler opened up a path for an rpg in 8bit 1080p and I believe a lunar 3 is right for that role if done right. We as fans need to show them what we want and are interested in. I am not looking to make profit in anyway. onlything id as for is a free copy of the completed game for anyone who worked on the project.
The Silver Star was my 2nd RPG. I loved it. Eternal Blue was meh. I enjoyed it, but there were some things about it that didn't give me that wholesome feeling. The remakes for the PS1 were good in their right but for me, The Silver Star will be the best.

Good video. Despite being a poor kid and not a rich kid I picked up a segacd in my childhood cuz some other rich kid traded it for something lame. Shoetly after I got lunar and holy DUNG was that game way ahead of its time. People liked it on the ps1, imagine having a version with way better music many years in advance? I still make Ghaleon my main username for everything because of lunar. I just love how he is an antagonist who wasn't actually evil in the end. Very rare back then. I've played all the games, and I very much agree that Dragon Song/Genesis by comparison is easily the worst. The battle system was the worst POS ever, though I did really like the artwork and BGM. I first played the Original, LTSS on Sega CD back in the mid 90s on my Sega CD after my dad rented it from blockbuster and I stole it from him haha Are you over on the LunarNET forums? I played Dragon Song when I still used my DS daily. I loved the way the battles looked (like the camera view and stuff) and the art style was pretty nice too. Sucks that with how bad it was, it may have been shovelware.
While Game Arts isn't exactly defunct, they haven't done much of anything in the past few years. Their latest accomplishment was the Grandia HD remaster and the HD collection a year ago. In other words, they're merely a shell of it's former glory As for Lunar's IP coming to an end, Dragon song did do it's fair share of damage, but I think the developers must have realized that there's just not enough source materials used to produced more sequels. This was never going to compete with the likes of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest
Lunar was a series that just kept getting passed around to see if interest good be drummed up for it, and each and every time it flopped, intial momentum started with the "complete" releases, which while labors of love, were very niche, they sold well enough to not make it a lost venture but not enough to garner a full fledged sequel. Also most of the staff don't want anything to do with it, thanks internal termoil
I imagine the dissolution/bankruptcy of Studio Alex had a lot to do with it. But more than that, Game Arts has become a company that seems to rest upon its laurels. Choosing more to remaster past successes than explore (possible) new ones.
I have the exact same thought. I've played every main entry Final Fantasy to date, except 11, and 13, and 10 was the last one that maintained the high level of excellence that the series had been known for.

Agree with all these comments, I loved Lunar and Lunar 2 - I mean, I named myself and a freaking emulator website after it. :)
While Game Arts isn't exactly defunct, they haven't done much of anything in the past few years. Their latest accomplishment was the Grandia HD remaster and the HD collection a year ago. In other words, they're merely a shell of it's former glory
As for Lunar's IP coming to an end, Dragon song did do it's fair share of damage, but I think the developers must have realized that there's just not enough source materials used to produced more sequels. This was never going to compete with the likes of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest
The only version I played was the Sega CD version the ports just didn't feel the same at all. The Sega CD version will always be my favorite.
Never could get hands on the first one but loved the 2nd on on ps1.
The same question about the Phantasy Star.
It was originally ported by Working Designs... their port was the best... The PS1 version was good also.
what is the title of the game on 0:43 ?
I imagine the dissolution/bankruptcy of Studio Alex had a lot to do with it. But more than that, Game Arts has become a company that seems to rest upon its laurels. Choosing more to remaster past successes than explore (possible) new ones.
Lunar 1&2 are on my RPG bucket list.
I like the Sega CD version of this game. I have it and Eternal Blue on Sega CD.
sad fate for good franchises
Huh, I knew studio Alex went bankrupt but didn't know why. Quite informative! I miss Lunar a lot. It's one of my favorite series.
Another great video man, already sharing the channel with my friends. I would really loo forward to a Jade Cocoon WTHH video :)
Thank you!!!
I actually got ahold of Game Arts and they told me they would share my email with their team.
You should make what the hell happened to final fantasy since its been going downhill since 10 imo
I agree, I'll consider making one.
I have the exact same thought. I've played every main entry Final Fantasy to date, except 11, and 13, and 10 was the last one that maintained the high level of excellence that the series had been known for.
@@ErickLandonRPG Wait, but isn't Final Fantasy XII a good game to you?
Final Fantasy went in a downhill on XII.
0:17 So one of the villains in Tales of Zestiria is a mole. NOW it all makes sense.
i have heard so much good about lunar games since i was boy. not even one of these have i ever play. i will get emulator up running.
