The 2 second gap between when burr says “I’m willing to wait for it” and when he says “I am the one thing in life I can control” with no music literally gives me shivers like ahhh I love this song
The thing about Hamilton and Burr that hurts is that what they learned from each other was their downfall. Hamilton took and took but he was going so fast and at the end of his life decided to finally slow down like Burr would, he decided to trust that Burr would wait like he always had before, but Burr learned not to hesitate from Hamilton, so he took his shot and paid for it.
This song shows how Hamilton and Burr's differences make them more similar. Hamilton "writes like he's running out of time" because he knows he's the only thing he has control over and he wants to be as successful as possible when death finally sneaks up on him. "He takes and he takes and he takes" because he knows you don't get anything in life without taking it. Burr is "willing to wait for it" because he knows he's the only thing in life he can control and goddamn it if he won't die happy, he won't die at all. He's "lying in wait" because he's calculating risks and rewards and trying to "never let them know what he's against and what he's for". They're both watching the clock but, for different reasons and that would make them either best friends or perfect rivals. Which I guess they were kinda both.
That's a really good analysis. Burr is the kind of person who never acts if he sees any chance of failure or risk of losing what he already has. Hamilton, on the other hand, haphazardly acts because he is never satisfied of what he already has. Both craves for more but acts differently because of a difference in perspective and background. This play is amazing because it shows us both Burr AND Hamilton's folly: too much waiting causes stagnation and lack of progress; whilst too much aggressiveness leads to careless, irreversible mistakes that might ruin everything.
Ryan Maliwat I feel like that is exactly what Lin-Manuel Miranda was trying to prove: that the two are exact opposites that are using two different tactics that still don’t work.
This is so accurate. It really just shows how human both of them are. As he says Hamilton has nothing to lose and that’s why he’s so ambitious. Burr doesn’t want to lose what he has so he waits for the perfect time to get things done
Both are opposites of each other that had the same goals. Hamilton lived like he really was the center of the stage (no inhibitions about getting to any goals) while Burr had to always observe from outside the room most times with self-doubt. Reminds me of the Hamilton types of people I've met in my life; I've always envied their drive. Sometimes I wish I could stop being a Burr and be on the center of MY stage more.
I know I’m late to party. Just wanted to add that Burr was more cautious because he has his family’s legacy to protect. Hamilton has nothing to lose so he’s less cautious than Burr. I don’t blame Burr for being cautious. I also get why Hamilton saw Burr as a man who refuses to take a stand for anything. Hamilton endorsing Jefferson and costing Burr his chance to become President was the final straw. Burr was furious.
Honestly, Leslie Odom Jr. is the Robin Williams of Hamilton. There's no replacing him. The amount of emotion he can put in his songs, especially when he screams "Wait!" in The World Was Wide Enough, is phenomenal. Lin Manuel made an excellent choice in casting him.
this is very well put. Especially considering that Leslie Odom Jr won the Tony award for best actor in a musical, where they both were nominated with Lin-Manuel Miranda. How cool this must feel, to cast a person who would beat you in your own musical. Amazing
"Death doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints It takes and it takes and it takes" I'm not sure why but this just really gets to me. I guess maybe because it's true.
They easily could've made Burr the villain but they didn't and that's why I love this musical. Burr is one of my favorite characters too. I relate to hamilton's ambition and burr's desire to please some vague "everybody" by not being open about what he himself believes. ("Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for.")
I agree completely, that's one of the things what makes this so incredible and really shows Lin's talent for writing. He made every character feel so relatable and real, with strengths and flaws that really help every character shine while not falling into common tropes of heroes and villains.
Not a fan of musicals. Not a fan of Hamilton. But this song lives rent free in my head. Powerful and emotional. Just makes you say “Damn…” every single time.
“Death doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes” really hits home when you see an innocent teenage girl die to illness, then turn around and see someone that’s truly evil continue living her life happily. Death really doesn’t care who you are.
My wife showed me this song and I'm not one for musicals typically but when I lost my grandfather(he raised me) I felt this immense unforgivable weight I felt the legacy of kindness and strength he left behind echo through my bones. This song saved me from myself. Its etched into my mind forever. if you ever feel lost music will find you and bring you home.
The sad thing is that Aaron Burr never wanted to be the bad guy. When Burr and Hamilton were in a duel, Burr had no idea that Hamilton was shooting up and not towards Burr, therefore Burr kind of accidentally shot Hamilton. Burr even says at Hamilton’s funeral how he hates how everyone is gonna see him as a villain. I mean... I don’t see Burr as a bad guy. He just made a mistake that’s all 🥺

At the end of Act I, Hamilton acts and Burr waits. However, at the end of Act II, Hamilton is now the one who waits and Burr is the one who acts. At both occasions we saw the ill effects of the lack of balance between over passiveness and over aggressiveness. In Act I Hamilton strains his family relations because he cannot be satisfied with his current standing; always wanting more whilst Burr refuses to back the Constitution because he doesn't want to partake in anything with any apparent risk for the risk of losing his status, throwing away his shot at a legacy right then and there. At the end of Act II, Hamilton throws away his shot and does not actively seek any reconciliation with Burr. This, of course, led to his death. Burr, on the other hand, pulled the trigger on one of the most influential personalities in history, forever damning his name and legacy to that of a murderer.
Can I just say how much I appreciate that one line at 1:45 where Burr sings, "I'm not falling behind or running late! I'm not standing still, I am lying in wait!" All my life, I've compared myself to others, and often felt like I was falling behind. Like all my peers were "ahead" of me in life, as though life were a race. Even now I struggle with these feelings, unfortunately. I compare myself to my peers, whom have jobs and driver's licenses and some of whom who are already married and have kids and places of their own. Meanwhile, I'm still living at home with my parents, I have no job, no driver's license, no boyfriend and no children. I often feel like I am one step behind everyone else, and I fear that I will always be behind. I fear I will find myself still single and living at home with my parents with no job at the age of 40. But that one line, "I'm not falling behind or running late!" helps somehow. I'm going to try repeating this line to myself whenever I'm feeling inferior to my peers and my own progress in life. I have to keep reminding myself that everybody goes at their own pace.
Hey!! There's nothing wrong with living at home with your parents!!☺ Everyone accomplishes things at a pace that's right for them. You've got nothing to feel bad about!!😁
Thanos doesn't descriminate between the sinners and the saints he takes and he takes and he takes and if there's a reason Iron Man's alive when everyone around him has died... I'm willing to wait for it Thanos doesn't hesitate he exhibits no restraint he takes and he takes and he takes He keeps winning anyway, changes the game, plays and he raises the stakes And if there's a reason our hero's thrive when so few survived then goddammit...I'm willing to wait for it
I’m a girl theater, I didn’t listen to Hamilton much and Hamilton was my first musical that I hear one year ago and was magic. Think that is time to hear it again… More this song an another that inspire me in many areas.
I just love how the chorus both changes and stays the same. Such a universal sentiment: "__ _doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints..."_ Genius lyrical structuring.
So back in sixth grade we had to do a all about me presentation. My quote was "Life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints and it takes and it takes and it takes. W We keep living anyway, we rise and we fall and we fall and we break." My friends quote was "In the eye of a hurricane there is quiet. For just a moment. A yellow sky." And my best friends quote was "Everything's legal in Jersey." She got a B+.
I love Burr as this musical's character. He's so relatable... I feel alone. My father left us, my mother is in trouble and there's no more family. I did have a friend that committed suicide and that marked me. I've had that tendency for years and I often ask myself why I'm still here. I don't know if I'm waiting but I feel trapped. I may sound like a little kid but I wanted my mom to feel proud. She will never be, even if she says she is. I have accomplished nothing but if I die, I'll never do I think that's why I feel trapped
I love how My Shot and Wait For It essentially summarize both Hamilton and Burr. Hamilton takes and takes, never throwing away his shot. Burr hangs back and waits for it. And in the end, the latter doesn't get you ahead.
2:39 y’know it’s always made me tear up at that part but one time I saw this as a caption for Song of Achilles fanart and now it makes me actively emotional
I sang the hole song with my eyes close and when I opened them I forgot I was in the living room so my family was there watching me and I dident relize how loud i was cause i hade headphones on,but al my uncle said was "you should sing more often" I just crumbled to the floor and died listening to this song a thousand more times and Im still not sick of it HURRAY FOR HAMILTION sorry for wasting your time with this *stupid* comment....have a good day
The choruses hit me so hard. Life and death don't discriminate, between the sinners and the saints, they take and take and take. I keep living anyways, rising and falling and breaking and making mistakes. If there's a reason I'm still alive when my two best friends have died... I'm not sure I can wait for it. For context, my best friends from school both died young. One was a genuine candidate for sainthood, who lost her 3 and a half year battle with leukemia our senior year of high school, the other, who's biggest 'sin' was who she chose to love, killed by a drunk driver after accepting an athletic scholarship to one of our state's major universities. And I'm still here twenty years on, not even worthy of their memory, left to wonder why? What was and is so special about ME, for crying out loud, that I should live when they didn't? Certainly they would have had more to offer the world in the last two decades than I have? If you're still here, thank you. I just watched Hamilton last night for the first time, and broke down crying at this part as it reopened and perfectly articulated a twenty year old hurt in less time than it took me to write this whole thing. May God, by whatever name you choose to assign Him (or Her) bless you.
Hamilton lived like he really was the center of the stage (no inhibitions about getting to any goals) while Burr had to always observe from outside the room most times with self-doubt. Mike Schwartz lmao. I appreciate you for the advice. I've actually been too lazy to eat sometimes (for some reason idk). In my country we're all about rice so maybe that's it.
Ngl I am like Hamilton, I do theater and I strive to always be on stage and I’m good at it, I always put myself in a position to be front and center, even when people tell me I’m great that isn’t enough for me I guess you can say I’m never satisfied and that has made many of my peers dislike me and discredit every time I land a role sometimes I wish I could be a burr so they can like me or at least for them not to have me as their punching bag
Jacky G Nah, live your life the way you want it, not how people expect you to. I guarantee, Hamiltons are the ones that leave dents in the world and history. Wish you the best!
Burr is the fighter who plays defense and waits for his opening. When he moves it's going to be calculated and perfect. Not the most exciting fighting style but it definitely gets the job done. Hamilton just comes in fist blazing. He's all offense all the time. His fights are more exciting and create more highlights. Both men know there's limited time on the clock to get the job done. But they both use the time in different ways. Neither way is better or worse. Just different. Both could have taken and learned a little bit from each other and been better fighters for it.
I'm going to see this next month!! Can't wait!!!! I had not heard anything from the soundtrack until yesterday and this song brought me to tears it's absolutely a masterpiece ❤️❤️❤️
As I read the book Founding Brothers by Joseph J Ellis in which it says “His grandfather, the great theologian Jonathan Edwards, has once said that we were all depraved creatures, mere spiders hanging precariously over a never-ending fire.” I hear “my grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher” Eyyyy same person
I am using this song as a muse for a character I'm writing who's a bit like Burr, she's seen as the villain because she's doing what her father tells her to do, all she wants is to prove herself to him, and she honestly just wants to be loved.
When I get older my first tattoo is going to be "I am the one thing in life I can control, I'm inimitable I am an original, I'm not falling behind or running late." Because I struggle to remember that
- Life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes. And we keep living anyway, we rise and we fall and we break and we make our mistakes. I love that quote so much.
Burr didn't have an affair. He didn't cheat on anyone bc he wasn't with someone to start. Hamilton cheated on Eliza. Both were in the wrong but still... Burr didn't cheat on anyone. The woman technically cheated. Then again she cheated on a BRITISH OFFICERV
This is the very first Hamilton song I ever heard, four years ago, when everyone kept talking about how great Hamilton was . . . I got curious even though I have never been a huge fan of musicals (Ive only loved Les Mis and Miss Saigon) . . . But i got curious one day and looked up Hamilton on the internet and this was the first song I came upon. And here we are four years later and I am just excited for the Hmilton movie coming out this friday. AT LAST I GET TO SEE THE ORIGINAL CAST DOING THEY THING OMG
Something I wanted to point out, is this musicals ability to show the importance of loss. It starts with telling us the loss of Hamilton's family, then, it tells us the Burr is an orphan too. So when Wait for it comes on, he tells us that life itself "takes, and it takes, and it takes", and so far, we can only sympathize with Burr. But then he says he must Wait For It, telling us that even though everyone has died, he wants to wait... even if that means losing. We sympathize with him but also are confused by his blindingly obvious "cowardice" at not being able to stand up and having to wait. But this combo makes the tragedy of Hamilton (which by the way, Hamilton the Musical is a tragedy at its core) so relatable because we all do the same. We all question our own inabilities all make choices regret, and there will always be those things with which we chose to Wait For It... and that hurts. Hamilton isnt saying throw away your shot, or Wait For It, it's a musical of legacy and remembrance, and so it suggests we take our shot for the right reason, so those that tell our story wont say we "Waited For It" or that we "Hurt others by taking our shot", instead they will remember us as good people, just like Hamilton does for Burr and Hamilton.
COVID man; this song gets me up in the morning. Death doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes. If there’s a reason I’m still alive when so many have died, I’m willing to wait for it 😤✊
"life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes and we keep living anyway." the quote that's keeping me going rn. the quote i am living by.
I think this song has multiple waves of thought 1- How much he loves Thoedosia and will wait until she can be with him forever 2- How all his love ones had been dying 3- How Hamilton is succeeding and he wants to be successful too And he can’t control anything so he waits for a sign and an opening for him to somehow control what is happening (It’s probably really obvious but I wanted to put it here)
The 2 second gap between when burr says “I’m willing to wait for it” and when he says “I am the one thing in life I can control” with no music literally gives me shivers like ahhh I love this song

Girl or boy! I feel you completly!!!!1 It is insane!!1

Hey!! There's nothing wrong with living at home with your parents!!☺
Everyone accomplishes things at a pace that's right for them. You've got nothing to feel bad about!!😁
Thanos doesn't descriminate between the sinners and the saints he takes and he takes and he takes
and if there's a reason Iron Man's alive when everyone around him has died... I'm willing to wait for it
Thanos doesn't hesitate he exhibits no restraint he takes and he takes and he takes
He keeps winning anyway, changes the game, plays and he raises the stakes

Nice lyrics, where can I find the full song?

I’m a girl theater, I didn’t listen to Hamilton much and Hamilton was my first musical that I hear one year ago and was magic. Think that is time to hear it again… More this song an another that inspire me in many areas.
0:27 lol I need this I'm making a animatic lol
how is that going?
I just love how the chorus both changes and stays the same. Such a universal sentiment: "__ _doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints..."_ Genius lyrical structuring.

Nah jokes aside this song is good af
Seeing Hamilton with my mom today in Dublin, this is for sure my most anticipated song
I think this is the best song in the whole musical not necessarily because of the lyrics but because of Leslie Odom Jr’s vocals in this song!!
There's is a reason this song is my favourite out of the whole musical
So back in sixth grade we had to do a all about me presentation. My quote was "Life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints and it takes and it takes and it takes. W
We keep living anyway, we rise and we fall and we fall and we break." My friends quote was "In the eye of a hurricane there is quiet. For just a moment. A yellow sky." And my best friends quote was "Everything's legal in Jersey." She got a B+.
Love doesn't discriminate....is one the best lines. It's also true.

I have accomplished nothing but if I die, I'll never do
I think that's why I feel trapped
I really love this song, it clearly paints Burr as a man fighting for the things he wants in a world where so much is beyond his control.
This is the best song from Hamilton 💯💯💯
Yes!!!!
I love how My Shot and Wait For It essentially summarize both Hamilton and Burr. Hamilton takes and takes, never throwing away his shot. Burr hangs back and waits for it. And in the end, the latter doesn't get you ahead.

Well damn. Just listened to the whole song for the first time because of you guys. Wow! Thank you!
Reminds me of the Hamilton types of people I've met in my life; I've always envied their drive. Sometimes I wish I could stop being a Burr and be on the center of MY stage more.
@CheesecakeLasagna, try eating fewer carbs; get the ol’ energy up :0)
Mike Schwartz lmao.

Why?
As I read the book Founding Brothers by Joseph J Ellis in which it says “His grandfather, the great theologian Jonathan Edwards, has once said that we were all depraved creatures, mere spiders hanging precariously over a never-ending fire.”
I hear “my grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher”
Eyyyy same person
I shiver when he says: "I am the one thing it life I can control"
THIS NOW MY FAVORITE SONG IN THE MUSICAL 😍😍
I am using this song as a muse for a character I'm writing who's a bit like Burr, she's seen as the villain because she's doing what her father tells her to do, all she wants is to prove herself to him, and she honestly just wants to be loved.
I connect to this so much I’m not an outspoken person I just wait for my time and sometimes it hurts to see people just pass by you and grow faster
For me this is the best song of the musical together with the last one.
At 2:39 .
I added this song to my senior quote 🖤

Hamilton has an affair: THE REYNOLDS PAMPHLET
@Nicholas Parker ALEXANDER HAMILTON HAD A TORID AFFAIR
Burr didn't have an affair. He didn't cheat on anyone bc he wasn't with someone to start. Hamilton cheated on Eliza. Both were in the wrong but still... Burr didn't cheat on anyone. The woman technically cheated. Then again she cheated on a BRITISH OFFICERV

Burr's main song: Wait for it
Hamilton's main song: my shit
Hamilton WAITS FOR IT and Burr is NOT THROWING AWAY HIS SHOT
This is the very first Hamilton song I ever heard, four years ago, when everyone kept talking about how great Hamilton was . . . I got curious even though I have never been a huge fan of musicals (Ive only loved Les Mis and Miss Saigon) . . . But i got curious one day and looked up Hamilton on the internet and this was the first song I came upon. And here we are four years later and I am just excited for the Hmilton movie coming out this friday. AT LAST I GET TO SEE THE ORIGINAL CAST DOING THEY THING OMG
*Alexander Hamilton:* Just you wait, just you wait...
*Aaron Burr:* I'm willing to wait for it, I'm willing to wait for it...
Damn burr really roasted him 😂
I really need sleep but
Im willing to wait for it!

Hamilton isnt saying throw away your shot, or Wait For It, it's a musical of legacy and remembrance, and so it suggests we take our shot for the right reason, so those that tell our story wont say we "Waited For It" or that we "Hurt others by taking our shot", instead they will remember us as good people, just like Hamilton does for Burr and Hamilton.
everything about this song it gives me shivers
Saw this musical in my APUSH class, and I just fell in love with it. This number is my personal favorite❤️
COVID man; this song gets me up in the morning. Death doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes. If there’s a reason I’m still alive when so many have died, I’m willing to wait for it 😤✊
2:38 oh no I'm crying now TwT
I love this song. I'm doing a lyrical dance to thos, so thank you very much for this lyric song!!!!
I love it too. I can relate.
"life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes and we keep living anyway."
the quote that's keeping me going rn. the quote i am living by.
this song and Dear Theadosia are my favorite songs
Why does this song make me strangely emotional even though I haven't even seen Hamilton?
You haven’t what-?
😳😳😳 no you have tooo
Man, why couldn't Hamilton and Burr get along in history
They'd have been unstoppable
I think this song has multiple waves of thought
1- How much he loves Thoedosia and will wait until she can be with him forever
2- How all his love ones had been dying
3- How Hamilton is succeeding and he wants to be successful too
And he can’t control anything so he waits for a sign and an opening for him to somehow control what is happening
(It’s probably really obvious but I wanted to put it here)
This song inspires me.
I've been looking for this song forever!!
Ok, this is now my favorite Hamilton song!
By far my favourite song of this musical!
I haven't seen the musical, but this song is amazing!!🔥
