Which Nib and why

- In this video, I talk about nibs. Fine nibs, medium nibs, bold nibs, flex nibs. And I talk about some pens as I try to answer many of the questions that keep coming back to me. Questions that you ask. Questions that you seek answers to.
I show Click Aristocrats, Pilots with BB nibs, a Kanwrite with a flex nib, a Kaweco and even a Sulekha pen, not following any particular order, but just by randomly picking up the pens that were there on my table as I was shooting this video. The idea was to try and address some of the issues raised by you, that too with a pen in the hand, to talk to you and intersperse (I won’t use the term illustrate, I believe that I am not good enough) the monologue with a few written words here and a sketch there.
I have tried to keep the answers simple - to the extent of erring on the side of oversimplification and I am tendering my apologies upfront. I have deliberately sought to avoid going into the depths as most of the questions that are raised come from people who are either new to the hobby or are new users of fountain pens. Seasoned writers and expert users, please excuse.
In hindsight it seems that this video has become too long, the monologue perhaps just a shade too boring and that by mixing different issues together I have added to the woes of the viewers. But trust me, some of you have asked all the questions and I had initially thought that it would be prudent to address the issues together. Do let me know your thoughts on this so that I can mould future videos accordingly.
Incidentally, for those who asked, it is a Sulekha notebook from the Jamini Roy series that I am using. As you can see, the paper is fountain pen friendly and it neither ghosts nor does the ink sip through to the other end. And no, there is no blotching or bleeding of the ink. The paper behaves pretty decently will all kinds of nibs, holding on to its reputation even with the flex nibs which require some pressure to be exerted to make the tines spread for the desired line variations.
Yes--another interesting and informative fountain pen video presented by Chawm! Thank You.
I choose my nib based on the paper I am writing on. For everyday writing, I tend to go for extra fine (or reverse write with a medium nib) since I have small handwriting and also most of the paper I need to write on are not fountain pen friendly. I have this habit of writing on the margins of books. For that I use Japanese Extra Fine nib pens (such as my Pilot Penmanship).
sir, massive video. the different nibs very well explained. i am so glad that you did this video, it is going to be invaluable to many like me. please continue posting more such videos. thank you.
Thanks, very informative video. Thought I add my 2 pence to it. For a beginner to choose a nib, one must first decide the nib size based on his writing size (whether the letter sizes are large or small). If letter sizes are small Fine or Extra fine and if letter sizes are larger thenMedium or thicker/broader nib will suit.
Again, nib sizes vary based on the manufacturer and/or region. For instance, Japanese nibs are thinner than European pen nibs. Indian and Chinese pen nibs depend on whether it is a generic nib like Jowo, Schmidt, etc., or manufactured in-house.
Reputed online sellers provide writing samples of different nib sizes on their websites. Else it is better to try the nib personally before buying a pen to avoid disappointment.
Thank-you sir this was very helpful for me ❤
That's a Very Good Sketch Doodling Sir on Your Notebook...🤓
thank you :)
A good video for a beginner. Very nice. Appreciate the efforts taken sir. Keep it up.
I prefer broad nibs. I generally don’t like fine or extra fine nibs, but sometimes when I need to write in a very small piece of paper, I use it. It’s my personal choice and others may differ.
Thank you 🙏
Nib....
Is the heart of pen...
Love your channel! Namaste from USA 🙏
thank you sirji :)
Nice video Sir. A bit surprised to hear the word "bold" instead of "broad" and a normal Pilot Pen with a stub nib called a "Pilot Parallel"
both my fault, apologies. and thank you for pointing out. as i do not follow a written script, such inconsistencies have crept in. apologies again. will certainly try to be more conscious about the words that i choose, spontaneity has its pitfalls :(
@@inkedhappiness Kindly do not take is fault finding. Coming from a seasoned fountain pen encyclopedia to newbies. Kindly do not use such words as "apologies".
Hello Sir, thank you for the informative videos. I enjoy listening to you. Just wondering if you could suggest 1 pen or brand that one should buy above click , Kanwrite, beena etc.
I’m one of those who’ve transitioned from medium nibs to Fine nibs..
I’m beginning to like the feedback and ‘precision writing’ experience with Fine nibs while Medium nibs have started to feel too buttery smooth and boring !
I like Ambitious nibs more than Kanwrite nibs.. I’ve quite a few Vintage pens, but somehow I’m inking them less than I’d have liked.. Vintage Pilot Elite has been an exception though..
Very Interesting ❤
sir, kanwrite nib#4 kon kon popular budget pen e use kora jai ?
can you make a video on top fountain pens for students for notes making. Also I hope you have used Bril torqoise ink. Does it fade away like parker quink? IF yes I don't wanna use it to write in my notes
I liked one of the pens which is shown in this video... the one with a silver cap and a black body. Can you please name it? Would like to buy that.
It's V’sign Forte
Sir I have a Sulekha Tapti, could you share what nib the pen uses?
Sir, please also make a video on the gold nib, should we upgrade our pen to gold nib.
not unless you have a fascination for gold?
@@inkedhappiness I am using Kanwrite Gold nib, in Desire pen, lost all interest in steel nib, after using it. Planning to upgrade to Pilot custom 74
There was a pen I use to write with one pen which looked similar like click aristocrat metal ink vaccum filler it was hard to fill ink I used to pull the vaccum with teeth struggling, sometimes the pump (vaccum)used to jammed .😅😅that pen used to cost only 5 rupees back in the day. Now I am looking for that pen.sulekha, Chelpark, and camlin ink was cost of 12 rupees to 20 rupees so far I remember. If anyone remember that pen let me know....I will buy
Anyway Nice video feeling nostalgic love from Sikkim love 💕.
thank you so very much. let me try and find that pen for you :)

What about the wing sung models???
:) yes, what about them? if you can be more specific...
I'm thinking to buy pilot metropolitan as my first fountain pain, should I go for it or not??
why not?
Which Kanwrite pen is the smoothest to write sir ? Which has a best kinda nib. . I want to buy one. Confused b/w the 3 variants
they are all good, but generally speaking, the boarder the nib, more is the surface area that touches the paper, more is the flow of ink, and more is the smoothness. but at the end of the day, the choice is very personal.
@@inkedhappiness thanks alot sir. Ruk keep in mind. Maybe medium or broad nib will do. I want smoothness ( I use V7 pens otherwise)
@@satwikkk the Medium is always a good point to start then move up towards Broad or down towards fine depending upon your own preferences.
@@inkedhappiness TYSM sirr... indebtedness 🙏
