Thank you for the reminder: to play my bass more often when during and after editing photos!!
I started in 1978, with a manual camera with built in light meter. After a month the light meter died. Looking back that was a good thing. It made me realy look at the light. The thing I learned resently is that 35 mm is wide enough for landscape shots. Wider lenses makes molehills out of mountains, and I would think twice before using them. In 1978 I hade only 3 lenses, 35mm, 50mm and a 135mm. And actually, that is a fine combination.
By the way, I remember seeing a book; "Learn to play like Django Reinhardt - the first 20 years is the hardest"

Laura, everytime I watch one of your videos you always inspire me. For the last 10 years I've always wanted to make photo and videography more than just a hobby that I sometimes make money doing, but because of fear of failure or feeling that I don't measure up when compared to other individuals, I never took the bold step forward. I can relate to everything you went through. The difference is that I'm almost 60 , still passionate about creating stuff but I'm still stuck in my 9-5 job. Thanks for being so open and honest. You are like a breath of fresh air every time I tune in. I will stop comparing my work and just post. Stay real.

I haven’t held a bass guitar 🎸 for as long as I have held a camera 📸… so I know the feeling.. photography is addictive … it forces you to see the world from a different perspective

I couldn't even speak English. 😂 So it makes me super happy to be able to inspire others to follow their dreams as a photographer. That's what I did and I made it. It wasn't easy at all, it took me a few years, but with consistency and passion, it can be done! Good camera btw! I had the old M50 but I sold it not long ago as I needed a new camera for my videos. Now get good with that one and when you upgrade, you'll be even better! ❤️

I love the message. It takes bravery to be vulnerable. That is so true. But it's how we all start out. Even when we're born. The most profound vulnerability imaginable.
Isn't the bass a cool instrument? I love the way it looks. When I was a kid I wanted to play bass, but my mother said no. Trumpet, which finally became guitar. But about six months ago I said I'm not getting younger. I got a P bass and I practice and it's happening!
Plus of course photography, which I have always loved. Video editing. I love the RUclips community.

I always enjoy going somewhere and taking new pictures. Laura I was in Bayswater in 2001, I don't know how far you are from there but I enjoyed it and visited a few places like the British Museum and saw the Picadilly square. Really enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

Love your videos, love the openness and vulnerability,... I am 42 and have been struggling to learn the bass on and off for years now, but have decided to give photography and filmmaking my full focus, and also learn some Spanish:). Here is one of my favorite quotes that says something similar to your message:
If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid with regard to external things. Don't wish to be thought to know anything; and even if you appear to be somebody important to others, distrust yourself. For, it is difficult to both keep your faculty of choice in a state conformable to nature, and at the same time acquire external things. But while you are careful about the one, you must of necessity neglect the other.

I practise all genres when I can, to get a mix and learn from each genre to help the other - my hobby is walking so geos hand in hand with a lot of photography genres. Great video Laura, keep helping us with your ever evolving knowledge/skills = cheers

The difference between a professional and an amateur is the professional only shows their good work. There is suboptimal on their editing floor. Maybe they make less mistakes than we make but nobody else knows. Fail forward.
As you suggest, the people we admire were once in the place we are now. At first, practice, practice, practice. American motivational speaker Tony Robbins says “perfect practice makes perfect.” Practicing the the right way will take us to where we want to go. Practicing and making the same mistakes will not.
If we suck, as you so frequently describe it, embrace it. That is where you are. Practice and experience will take you to a new level. From the suck level there is rapid improvement. Then there will come a time when improvement will be slower and incremental. Embrace that too.
Great advice not to compare yourself with others. No matter how hard I try, I will never be a good Laura BC. I can become a better nurse Marty. I will be 70 next month. I aspire to be a Henri Cartier-Bresson. That has already been done. Nobody can be HCB. 10k images will take me deeper into nurse Marty land. Purchasing a used Fuji camera with IBIS. Want to do hybrid photography. HCB never did that. So there. I’m headed into nurse Marty land.

Hello there, I am a new subscriber to your channel. Your words today are so very inspiring. They touched me so deeply I was almost moved to tears. I have always been interested in photography but would rarely shoot any photos. When I did., I would usually delete them, because they never looked as good as those we see on social media. Your words and your passion however, touched me deeply and inspired me to dust my camera, recharge my battery, and now I will attempt to shoot photos.
I am not sure if I will share those photos yet, but I will take baby steps for now :)

Thank you for this video Laura 🤗 I quit my job in June to focus solely on my photography and growing it into a business. It's going well but last night I couldn't sleep fearing about building my website and showing my work. When it comes down to is I still feel like I'm not good enough. I know this isn't true but I keep losing sleep over this. I know it's because it's just something new and I know I'll over come these fears. It's a scary path and every new project, you get butterflies in the stomach because you get scared about not being good enough for that particular shoot. You know what? I've got way better at it but when the project is very different to what I normally do, I can't sleep either! 😅
This is super normal. It took me years of experience and many different photography projects to feel confident enough. You'll get there. ❤️ Being nervous is normal because YOU LOVE what you do. YOU CARE, and that's amazing! I wish you all the best with this amazing journey! It's full of up and downs but sooooo worth it!

i just got a camera- i know how to to turn it on- thats it. but no matter the subject- content creators must start devoliping play list with lessons 1,2,3,,4-- straight to the point--- if it takes a paid subscription so be it-- you i would pay for -- others with all the crap to get monetized no matter how good they are-- they waste 75% of a persons time. youtube teaches shotgun style-- it just throws info---- there is no step1- grow and be ready for step 2---- you are the closest- i find your titles are no where near click bait- but straight to the topic - and a newbie like me knows its around chapter 1ish--- THANK YOU--- and your accent-- well one i learned mexican is actually a diffrent language! and second its lovely and forces me to listen with ean extra effort which is pleasurable effort--- as i dont strain through loads of bullshit-- you are always on target-- so much so... i think you staged your bloopers!!! lol

Hola, Laura. Tengo 44 y hace más de 20 hice un curso de fotografía, incluso me monté un laboratorio en casa, pues era fotografía analógica. Pero lo dejé, pensé que no se me daba bien, dejé de hacer fotos y me busqué la vida de otra forma. Ahora se que no tuve paciencia y que no me di el tiempo necesario para aprender.
A principios de año me compré una cámara digital con la intención de volver a intentarlo, y aunque a veces me frustro y me pregunto por que lo hago, se que con el tiempo aprenderé (aunque sea solo por hobby). 😊

I really appreciate it! 😍 Glad you found me. :) Maybe it sounds cliche but you have to do a RUclips channel about something you’re truly passionate about. It’s a lot of hard work, and sometimes is hard to be consistent. If you pick a topic you don’t love, you’ll burn out. So the best advice I can give you is to create a channel about something you LOVE. 😊❤️ Big hug to DR from London!

😂 I would totally believe you! I was pretty good at surf photography when I started. But I'm 100% sure you're not amazing at many things when you first start. Like me. So many things I'm terrible with from the start. 😄 That's the meaning of the video. Nobody is amazing at everything. If you say you're, no, I don't believe you. haha 😄

Thank you for sharing. Compared to my musical ability you're phenomenal. I've started filming myself at work to get used to looking at the camera, taking care of the separate audio, noticing when it's stopped recording (Fuji XT-4 only records for 1/2 hour) - things I don't have to worry about when taking pictures but are new for someone trying to learn how to make videos/vlogs. It's all very low-key currently so no one's actually noticed. We'll see what happens once I drag in a green screen and some lights. 📸📗
You're welcome Chris! This is AMAZING to read, well done! What you're doing is the PERFECT practise when not being used to the camera. It will help you to get better in front of it, it will help you improve your framing, and most importantly, it will help you to get used to record and document everything you do.
