I've heard, no substantiation, that Keith would lay down his rhythm track, and Charlie would lay down the percussion on top of that. If true, that's freakin' wild!
Yes & you know the account of the night Mick called a sleeping Charlie in his hotel room & Charlie got dressed in a suit and went to Mick and reminded him that.
Perfect song choice for a tribute to Charlie Watts. When I was a kid I wondered how they could be so tight and so loose at the same time. Watching Beato and you break it down made me realize it was Charlie's impeccable groove that allowed the others the freedom to play in his sandbox. Only took 50 years to get it explained in a way I could understand. Thanks!
I love Keith’s anecdotes about how he would always mess with Charlie during shows and play a little off-beat to see if Charlie would do the same but Charlie never took the bait, he would always smile and be like “nope, this is where we’re supposed to be”
Saw The Rolling Stones live in Cardiff a few years ago. All of them still had it, but Charlie was cool, calm and collected throughout. And the man could go for hours. Literally. Good innings mate. What a life.
Charlie Watts was wonderful... The band was pouring every ounce of energy imaginable into every performance.... Charlie appears to be listening to NPR and just staying in his pocket completely unfazed
Rick Beato looked like he was going to tear up over this one. Had a great video to go along with it. Sad to see he passed, 80 years is a long life tho. Appreciate the video. RIP Charlie
I first saw the Stones in Ottawa in '65 and thus began a life long love affair with these guys. RIP Charlie. John Hiatt "Now I'm in my car I got the radio on I'm yellin' at the kids in the back seat 'Cause they're bangin' like Charlie Watts"
This is a great example of a true pro playing a version that pays respect to the current popular music scene of 1978ish… it’s a much more disco vibe than a lot of versions I know…. Charlie’s playing isn’t necessarily technically hard to follow but he has these subtle strokes that make it unique to him and totally recognizable. Can’t you hear me knocking great example…. If Stewart Copeland is behind the kit you can’t mistake it… Truly great alpha players on whatever instrument are impossible to not pick out
Charlie was so smooth. Star Star live in 78 he is SO smooth. They could play anything. Brian Jones, Mick T and Ronnie. It's all the Stones and they're are great. IORR
RIP, Charlie. The execution and pocket there are perfect, agreed. That hi-hat groove you're digging is that quintessential, 1/8th notes open on the up-beat disco move. They caught hell for the disco vibe as I recall, but it really was an artful co-opting. Great tune.
@@sjeanmacleod keith was super groovy on rhythm up until he started developing a serious case of arthritis. he proved his ability to play lead on beggars banquet, and let it bleed, i feel like he’d given all he could being the lead, and gave the rights to an even better taylor that catapulted the stones.
I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this video. The Beatles, as a group or individually, could never play traditional, raw blues music like The Rolling Stones did. I always enjoy great learnings from Michael’s reactions that talk about drumming and rhythm. Plus, Michael’s own guitar work at the end of this video shows a lot that we can pick up from, by watching and listening to what he does. In the 90s, I saw The Rolling Stones twice, once with third row seats. Today, I consider myself lucky for those experiences.
Tend to disagree, the Beatles 'Yer Blues' puts that suggestion to rest. The Beatles could play blues like no one else, if that's all they ever wanted to do, instead they became mega-musical innovators, something the Rolling Stones could never do, and I love the Rolling Stones, and believe they're fantastic too in their own way. Beatles though, in my book, get the edge!
Never really listened to The Stones after Exile..... Yes I'm a heathen! But you're so right Michael! Everytime I hear ' Street Fighting Man' I cannot figure out what Charlie was doing but hell I loved it!! I bought Let it Bleed in 1969 and the way the guitars meshed with the drums..... Totally inspiring... Still is
Thank you Michael, for making a tough day a little easier and for one of the best explanations ever of how and why the Stones truly are “THE GREATEST ROCK & ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD!”
Yeah, it's funny that though I think? 'Cause when you look at all the 'big' bands then they all got the 'right' drummer. I mean, imagine Ringo in the Who? Or John Bonzo in the Beatles? Or Moon in the Stones? None of them would've worked.
What you're describing Michael is very similar to the Motown style of arranging songs and recording them. Eric Clapton said one time he went to a Motown type session and there were 3 guitarists there and they all played very little but when put together it sounded beautiful. RIP Charlie. Perfect man for the job.
Stones are my favorite Studio band. And LOVE Disco Stones! Watch the interviews on the Exile on Main Street rock doc,... Don Was talking about the way Charlie pulled off the high hat is priceless.
Ringos groove is priceless, and it is as important element in The Beatles sound as Charlies rolling with the Stones. You can hear it missing in every single Beatles cover song ever made.
What a great track man. It's all about the Rhythm here and it always is about the Rhythm. You get a nice groove and the mood is pretty much set for the rest of the night. RIP Charlie. I will drink to you tonight
the 1978 recording of miss you live is the best recorded performance of this song. By far the best selection of you tube video tributes to Charlie Watts so far.
my older brother introduced me to zep stones aerosmith....took toys and some girls to my 5th grade album day lol...still tops...thank you bro👊 and love this channel my man 🙌
The most surprising thing of this video is seeing a strat with the trem cover still intact. 😂 Always loved this song and couldn't help jamming along with this one.
Yes, thank you. On hearing the sad news, the tune I thought I might want to hear because it best described Charlie was this one. Probably nowhere near my favourite Stones number, but for my non drummers ear, very simply describes Mr Watts in the pocket. Vale Charlie Watts another good man done gone. 🙏
The demo of this song is amazing it's like 12 min long, but I believe mick and billy Preston started the embryo of this song during the 76 European tour and bill wyman grabbed a hold of it and turned it into what we hear here, amazing rhythm section him and Charlie
Hey Michael - you got to 300k!! I bet it was the Ed Sheeran song that did it! :) xxx RIP Charlie Watts :( And back then the drummers didn't have a click track earpiece. Something that really annoys me about today's drummers. His rhythm was bang on.
This groove is proof positive that Mick has always been Charlie’s singer.
I've heard, no substantiation, that Keith would lay down his rhythm track, and Charlie would lay down the percussion on top of that. If true, that's freakin' wild!

R.I.P.Charlie,one of the best pocket players ever.
I cried a little today, at work, when a stones tune came on… RIP Charlie Boy. The most ‘perfect’ drummer
This one and “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” . Monumental tracks.

I can hear it Michael. The hi-hat funk and drive is a blessing given to us. Thank you for the delightful groove Charlie.
14:53 Michael couldn’t hold back any longer…busts out his own improv solo🎸🎵🎶
Outstanding insight on this👍
Charlie Watts was wonderful... The band was pouring every ounce of energy imaginable into every performance.... Charlie appears to be listening to NPR and just staying in his pocket completely unfazed
Bill Wyman on bass as well, like parents on stage letting the kids run wild.
Best rock groove ever…. Miss you Charlie, the humble English gentleman of the glorious Stones, yep, so blessed to have seen them live x 5.
Thanks for doing this MP. It’s a sad day. Rock on Charlie

What a great song to showcase Charlie's incredible drumming .... I will Miss You Charlie. Rest in peace Mr. Watts 🥁 Great tribute 👍
Charlie was the smoothest mfer man
Rolling Stones and Johnny Lang at Aloha Stadium was my first concert ever. Hundreds of shows later that one still stands above the rest.
Charley was always the coolest STONE ✔️ Got the BUTS moving! Miss You Already, RIP Charle, my Rhythm friend.

Charlie Watts was a jazz drummer first and you can feel that influence in his drumming. One of the best drummers in rock history imo. Him and Bonham 🥰

Just saw this on a stones facebook channel...over 3 million views already...awesome job.
Keef didn’t always look back at Charlie and smile because he just liked looking at a drummer with short hair 😎
Smiling, and crying at the same time . Thank you for your joyous tribute.
What a great breakdown. Heard that song a million times and never even gave that groove the appreciation it deserves.

Charlie Watts. No fluff, nothing unnecessary. Super solid back beat.

The intro into Honky Tonk Women is all you need to know about Charlie Watts.
lol so adorable they gave Mick a guitar to wear and pretend to play from time to time.
I hate when an artist just uses a guitar as a prop. It's cringe-worthy.
He plays Rhythm on a bunch of stone stuff. He actually isn't too bad. In this case it is just a prop.
I’m not a drummer but I noticed that on the hihat he was up on his stick and down on the snare
