@Khantext12 Nope, polish witch is wiedźma. Wiedźminka would be closer in structure to Witcheress. Adding more to the word rather than going back to just feminine root of the word.
@Khantext12 Nope. Witch in polish is "wiedźma" and male form of this word is "wiedźmarz" but nobody use this and in male case like "Witch king of Angmar" we us "Czarnoksiężnik" (as evil sorcerer which known dark arts primary) and another word for "king". People that are mad about not playing as Geralt missed the fact that Geralt fucking basically retires at the end of Blood and Wine and that Ciri is literally set up to be his successor
Depends if you play the deck and of course the ending you got from w3... i got the really depressing of ciri disappearing and geralt on a never ending suicidal mission
Not too mention she can travel worlds and times. Who says there's not a world where they figured out how to let women survive.. people are seriously looking at anything to be offended about
That's like my only issue with Ciri being the W4 protagonist - W3 was supposed to be the conclusion of the Geralt & Ciri story (and for me fulfilled that role perfectly), so every sequel revolving around main characters seems as a cheap and unnecessary cash grab to me. Now, to be fair, I've always preferred the empress ending, which obviously doesn't go with her being W4 protagonist nearly as good as the witcher Ciri ending, so I'm kinda biased. Personally, I would prefer prequel set long before the Geralt's times (perhaps during the Falka rebellion)...
She’s not really the main character in most of the books because the books rotate around many different protagonists but she’s still one of the most prominent characters.
You expect the Reich-Wingers to read? Didn't the Notzi's (I'm saying it this way because who knows what RUclips might do) burn books so that their narrative was the only one that mattered? Woke is just the latest in a long line of buzzwords that the Right-wing use so that they can keep their sheep afraid of literally everything that isn't them.
I saw one dude who actually went into the book lore to understand how the Trials of Grass work and why the mortality rate is so absurd and he came to the conclusion that what kills you during the trials is the production of testosterone. That's why adult men always die if subjected to it. That's why they do it with younger boys while their production is lower. They basically never knew that women would have a higher survival rate, and trusted that they would be more vulnerable, because, if it kills strongs adult men, it surely will also kill adult women, who were seen as more fragile by default. Is it Canon? Not really, but the dude had such a good analysis of it, I was flabbergasted about it. I'm not making justice to his analysis. I wish I could find his post again.
Where did he find this research? You claim it to be from the books, yet at the same time saying "it's not really canon" If it's from the books, it's canon. If it's not canon, it's not from the books, in otter wordt, the Netflix witcher show is NOT canon.
@@wildwilco How did you come to that conclusion🤨 No, one guy gathered lore from the books and made an analysis based on that but his analysis could be wrong.
Respectfully she’s looking perfect, they actually made her look like she’s been thru some stuff without making her look totally different or unrelated to her W3 version I love it
@@kalelson8861Yeah because Geralt was super lean lmao. She isn’t even chubby, she’s just muscular, something that’d happen with laborious work which I know is foreign to you.
For all the fucking work we did for her in witcher 3, she damn well better be the fucking main character in witcher 4. We DIDNT do all that work just to play as GERALT AGAIN.
What makes me anxious is that we didn't see any of her actual powers in the trailer. She has a lot of new ones which is cool, but what about her elder blood abilities? I wanna teleport around the map!
@ we see powers from books, specifically drawing energy from water to strike with a spell (there is no mana in this universe). After all, there was already teleportation (fast travel). Playing as Ciri is, as before, the end game Geralt in the first location. The only thing I'm afraid of is a "stupid" explanation that Ciri is weaker to give us the opportunity to develop her.
@@righto8702a good in game lore reason I can draw on was a quote directly from Ciri during the later parts of the Witcher 3 where she calls the elder blood “my gift, and my bloody curse” she most likely hates and holds resentment towards that power because it’s dictated so much of her life (and others around her), she will always view herself more as a Witcher than a child of the elder blood. Choosing to forego the trials is a big indicator of that, it could also be she just doesn’t want to be reliant on the power after all she has been proven to be extremely stubborn

True but I'd attribute that more towards issues of the engine at this time. At this point we could very well be playing a Ciri that looks exactly like that. And I'm down for it

It never surprises me how some people forget that this has been a thing since 2015. The plan has already been set for Ciri to take up the mantle. Bare in mind, Ciri herself is far more powerful.
Yeah. True fans are not mad about playing Ciri. They’re more upset that CDPR is going to the traditional play style we’ve grown accustomed to instead of devising a new system revolving around Ciri not being a full Witcher. Utilizing her other magical abilities instead of potions. Like do we really expect Geralt or any of the surviving Witchers we know would ever subject her to the trial of grasses, especially at such an age. I mean she’s the lady of space and time. That’s enough. The grasses are a significant gamble during the best circumstances and those haven’t been the case since the sacking of Kaer Morhen. It’s not impossible but stretching believability.
You’re all purposely not hearing the criticism. That’s called straw manning and it’s dishonest just fyi. I haven’t heard anyone say Ciri being the protagonist itself is the problem. Why do you feel the need to run defense to such an extent that you misrepresent what people say?
@@Arprill4in here, it means that diversity (that is to say, the race, sexuality and gender) of the characters, is more important that making a good game. Essentially, virtual signaling the game(s).
@@Arprill4 it’s different depending on who you ask, but the origin comes from African American vocabulary. It originated in the 1920s as a term to describe someone who’s aware of social injustice and other issues. The term has since been bastardized into an insult to describe something or someone that frivolously complains and argues about social issues (despite the fact that they usually have a reason for their behavior)
That is your interpretation of it. Now, don't get me wrong: I'm NOT siding with the "She's wahmen, so it's automatically WOKE 😭😭😭" and the "She's uglyyyyy 😭😭" crowd. However, the way I see it, it is unnecessary to go with Ciri. To me, it just seems like the worse option when we could've gotten a completely different character with whom CD Projekt would be free to be creative, or a Vesemir prequel. Who wouldn't want to play as Vesemir? Retconning stuff from the lore, where women can't become actual Witchers (I disagree with his point in the video where he says the games don't have to follow that because they're not canon) just feels forced so we'd have a female protagonist. And of course, for the publicity benefits of going with Ciri. The way I see it, Ciri's canon (game canon, I mean) story should end in W3 along with Geralt's, with him retiring in Corvo Bianco and Ciri becoming a "Witcher by trade". We don't need to know anything else about that. Plus, Ciri is one of the most powerful people in existence, so unless they nerf her A LOT, the game could have a completely different vibe. But sure, I hope the game is good and I don't object to playing with Ciri. I'd just prefer playing as another character. And I won't automatically assume it's woke. But I sure hope it isn't.
@CaesarLvcivs Vessimir is just a cool guy but there's more emotion and heart surrounding a character like Ciri. Witcher is all about story (the gameplay is bland/easy). Considering Ciri is the main focus of the books and is the main focus of Witcher 3, it makes sense to have Ciri ad main character. Playing as Vessimir would feel like a spin off rather than a continuation.
@@sameehkins5957 But here's another question: why does it need to be a continuation? As I said, the ending could've been left open and we get another story entirely. Whether this would be better or worse for the story wold throughout the 3 games is a matter of opinion. Mine is that it would be better. I think the story and the characters would benefit more from a fresh start than risking ruining a story that already has a good open ending. Sure, it's titled Witcher 4, but it could as well be titled something else entirely, such as "The Witcher: Spin-off Character". My point is that the title is irrelevant, in case someone would use it to argue that it should be a continuation.
"I know nothing about the female experience and perspective and don't want to." That was an actual comment I've seen. They can't imagine playing as a woman and don't want to try imagining what it's like to be one.
Concerning the ‘women can’t be witchers’ thing - dunno how it looks like in the english translation, but in our original polish one there is absolutely no mention that witchers consist solely of males. Sapkowski - the author of the Witcher books - never denied their existence either when it comes to other Witcher related media either. The 2003 ttrpg game - Witcher - the game of Imagination, stated that the School of the Cat trained women as well, while the original tv series from 2002 outright featured a female witcher character - Adele. Sapkowski never criticised those. Lastly, there is a quote from Triss after she meets young Ciri training in Kaer Morhen: “You didn’t subject Ciri to violent mutations, you didn’t tamper with hormones, nor did you experiment with elixirs and the Trial of the Grasses. And for that, you are to be commended. It was reasonable, responsible, and humane." So it is implied that girls being subjected to the Trials IS possible; it simply wasn’t done.
The amount of hoops u are jumping to make sense of this dei crap is insane. SIRI is not a witcher. She can never be a witcher. And frankly she doesn't need to be. Reasons: 1.she is woman. 2. It is very risky. Risk she doesn't need to take. She is already strong and even if she wasn't this was is way way too risky. 3. She is an adult. There is a reason the trial of grass is done on children or boys. Their body is more open to change. And before u state that she has elder blood, refer to point 2. It is risky and unrequired. @Sweetzluf I agree, Arthur has a more complex and better story arc compared to John. While John story in RDR is basically « I’ll do whatever it takes to save my family » with a little twist at the end about the government. RDR2 explores deeper topics : what does loyalty mean ? Also RDR2 came out 8 years later and had more time and money invested to it.
as a Polish guy and a fan of the Witcher series, I have to say that Ciri could be a Witcher according to the books, the only problem with the Trial of Grasses is that the potions taken by Ciri would have a bad effect on her hormones during puberty, which is why Triss was angry at Gerald when she heard that they were training a woman to be a Witcher, not because she couldn't, but because she wanted Ciri to mature physically and mentally. because it's worth remembering that statistically only 3 out of 10 children survive the Trial of Grasses, and become Witchers.
"Ciri can't be a Witcher" So we are just forgetting the opening of Witcher 3 that shows Ciri training to become a Witcher, or the playable missions where Ciri acts as a Witcher, or the ending that *spoilers* has her become a Witcher? I had to double check, but apparently the books never actually state that it’s impossible for women to become witchers. They say that historically, women haven’t been able to survive the Witcher trials, but they never outright say that it’s impossible. I reserve judgement on the game till it comes out but saying "it's not cannon" feels like a petty cop out for breaking in universe rules. I'd potentially argue this to the point that I'd rather them outright say that that specific rule doesn't add any value to the story and that's why they're ignoring it instead of saying that it's not cannon or that it works by technicality

I keep needing to point out a few things. Ciri trained her entire life to be a Witcher under two of the greatest Wolves to ever live. Her skill, talent, and training are all exceptional, and it’s literally her destiny. The mutations are the only surprising part, and those are handled by two points. First, that a major plot point of Witcher 3 was studying, reverse engineering, and altering the creation formula and process of Witchers. Second, her adoptive mother and sister are both on the short list of candidates for ‘strongest mage alive’. Either one of them, let alone both, would easily hand wave away the issue of the process being incompatible with her biology.

Ciri can fight like witchers do because she was trained for it, she can travel and hunt monsters like witchers do because she wants to live like that, but to be a witcher she would have to undergo mutations and that simply makes no sense. She is already more powerful than a hundred witchers put together. To somehow justify this, they would have to completely deprive her of her elder blood and all the powers it gives, because undergoing a mutation that will 99.9% kill her in order to be much weaker simply does not make sense. Ciri can work and live as a witcher without being a depowered cheap imitation of Geralt, she can do it and remain herself. You would understand this if you played Witcher 3.
@anhkriva5274 don't jump to conclusions yet, she will probably not be just a female geralt with elder blood, she won't be able to do the same as Geralt, but will still be able to do witcher activities with difference of what makes her strong opposed to common witcher, who needs witcher potions ,when you have magic at your finger tips

Exactly, not to mention the fact that Ciri, is born of elder blood. Whether she still has those powers or not after stopping the wild hunt is another debate (dont remember if Witcher 3 explains this). But Ciri is not a normal human, regardless. Ciri is such a badass in the books and I was thrilled to see she was gonna be the protag for Witcher 4. Women also CAN and HAVE been Witchers in the canon. The School of the Cat, which is her medallion (taken from a Witcher killer that she killed at age like 15), have Witchers who are women from time to time. She even was trained to be a Witcher by the School of the Wolf and was literally set up to be Geralts successor. It's so obvious when people have not read the books which is a shame because I could not put them down when I read them. So good and made me love these characters even more than I already did.
@ in the game canon they are though, which is the topic of the video. In the books its far less clear. Because the games follow the books and their own canon, I put them together in my comment.
It was 10 years, a lot of people seems to forget that Yennefer was allowed to search Imperial Library for the witcher formula (most likely from the Serpent School) and used this knowledge to help Uma. It was a major plot point, Eskel didn't know what to think about having the ability to create more witchers again, Lambert was pissed of that Vesemir still had the equipment around the fortress, he was both nostalgic about the good ol days and traumatised by the horrific proces of witcherisation. 60% of boys died during the Trial of Grass but I belive Ciri Elder Blood will allow her to survive, after all Avallach managed to survive most of the trial. I think there is potential to tell very interesting story with Ciri and we shouldn't be afraid of every new thing in the lore, as lore can always be bent. Just not too much not to break it
To add to all of this: TW4 is obviously going to take place years after TW3, so it's not like nothing has happend in that time. Not to mention that a big part of the game's marketing is the new School of Lynx, which Ciri even has a Medallion of in this Trailer. CDPR clearly wanted this Trailer to make us question a lot of stuff - and it's honestly concerning how many people are completely oblivious to this...

Nah ciri being a witcher is unnecessary, i don't mind a game with her as the mc but she DOESN'T NEED to be a witcher with mutation (she is a honourary witcher, as in she is called a witcher but isn't really a witcher) It just extra work to justify unnecessary additions also it not really about the characters being fap material (although some people do go to that extreme length) it more about uglification and in this case i don't think it that worthy of an outrage especially since trailer booty man geralt looked quite different from the release one BUT witcher 3 ciri looks way better (no "aging" would justify that facial structure change still not a deal breaker) at the end of the day it just a trailer
Trust me, I'm disappointed we won't be geralt in witcher 4. But Ciri looks pretty good as the MC. I'm more concerned about if she'll have her elder abilities or not. Blink would be an amazing mechanic.
Still horrible witcher protagonist unless she has the core witcher traits. Witcher senses, witcher signs, and can consume potions. If she's just her... not mutated she has no witcher senses, will die from poison because of potions and can't use signs... she's just a bad protagonist for a character which's profession is litterally known for these things. If she is mutated and can do those things... shame, i liked gerald more, but fair enough, she'll do well and deserves to be the next witcher and i'll be hyped for the game.
@@juliusnebulus7303 did you not see Ciri in the trailer, drinking a potion and the cat eyes? Kinda hard to miss. It's right before she confronts the Bauk.
@Sweetzluf i did see it. But i'm not sure if that's just some bs to bait. We've seen it quite often that something shown to us only happens in a very small part of the game. And they will have to come up with a good reason aswell... for how she survived the trial of grasses and why she went through it. A lot that can go wrong. They won't be free of judgement until they delivered... I made that mistake once, with cyberpunk, won't do it again. I'm skeptic, for a good reason. No praise before it's released.
@@juliusnebulus7303 personally I am not that worried for the writing. As that is one thing CDPR has always delivered. And I'm sure they'll write a beliaveable way she did undergo the grasses etc. What I am most worried about is how they launch the game.. Hoping for the best as I'm excited.
We don't know of Ciri could become a Witcher as far as the books go. We know that: - 4/10 boys survive the trial of grasses - the trial was performed on girls but all of them died - Ciri is not any woman, she's incredibly powerful It's only clear all of the girls that attempted to pass the trial died, the witchers stopped taking girl children altogether rather than experiment further. It's entirely possible some girls would survive, just a definitely smaller number than boys. Also Ciri herself is a much more powerful and strong human altogether. She has a much higher chance passing the trial than others, boy or girl. And in the books she does very much want to become a Witcher, she even calls herself one.
I honestly love how Ciri seemed so jaded now. The character development from a mischievous daddy's girl to this dark, disillusioned monster hunter. I can't wait to dive into the story. To know what happened in between 3 and 4.
She has insane powers! She doesn’t need to do the trial of grasses. And she proclaimed herself a witcher throughout the books. The prejudice she might face among witchers could make for an interesting story-especially since witchers are dying out.
The funnist thing is taht the script where Ciri was main protagonist was almost ready already decade ago, but sure, sure, games are woke now, but not 10 years ago
Bro, I was jumping in excitement when it was revealed Ciri's gonna be the next protagonist. Geralt's story, i believe, is mostly done by the end of Witcher 3. Ciri's got so much more ahead of her and i wanna see that!
Thats all well and good, but every single franchise has switched out their male protagonists for female. Zelda, Star Wars, Uncharted, Resident Evil, Ghost of Yotei.... you must not be very good at pattern recognition. If it waste. different time, Ciri might be OK.
@@michellestr8998 Zelda is the protagonist for a SINGLE game, chill out. Star Wars had plenty of protagonists beyond the Skywalkers, what's the problem with the newest one being a woman? Uncharted's protagonist is still Nathan Drake and Resident Evil had female protagonists all the way back in the 90s. Ghost of Yotei is a whole new game, not Ghost of Tsushima 2, you literally picked the worst examples for your case.
@@michellestr8998I see what you mean, except for resident evil.... because in nearly all RE games you choose to play as male or female or you play as both.
Thank you for this. As a woman who's been playing Witcher games over and over since my teens I had no idea how much sexism hid in our community until the trailer came out...
I don’t think many read the book or understand her backstory. Don’t blame the Witcher community please. I honestly think many don’t like non male leads. As dude I usually make my characters female as is. I only hope Witcher 3 decisions carry over and Ciri went the Witcher route and did the mutations to become sterile “denying” destiny.
It’s inevitable that something is gonna be labeled DEI. Even when it was set up in the literal last game that is praised as one of the best in the series. Always trying to find something to be mad at, meanwhile I’m gonna play Witcher 4 and see what Ciri’s story holds.
Remember how they whined about Baldur's Gate 3 and then suddenly stopped, just after it came out and everyone loved that game? It's incredible how that didn't convince people to stop trusting these grifters.
@@nxzavianthey weren't right about shit, those are just plain and simple bad games. It really had nothing to do with wokeness. And Saints Row was a buggy glitchy mess with dog water writing and had basically zero of the elements people remember from the original series

@@sladew9788 Since it was never actually said that women can't become Witchers - neither in the Books, nor the Games - there aren't any to our knowledge, because they just never tried. So I guess [I take your glasses away].
Okay, so Ciri just can't through the trial of the grasses....SHE HAS ELDER BLOOD!!! She's already stronger than a normal Witcher because of that alone.

Flashbacks from horizon zero dawn
I feel like everyone thinks they just made her a female geralt, but come on, why would she need mutations to survive with silly witcher potions she was born strong and trained to fight by the best. She doesn't need to be the same to be effective monster hunter. All she needed was some knowledge and experience (and the magic that she got with her birth package ;D ) It would be Woke if she was just witcher with maybe slightly stronger magic still played around mutation, but she was literally paraded around her magical capabilities I just hate they didn't show the main difference more in the trailer so people wouldn't think they forgot who she is. (The thing with cannon is that witcher 3 was non-written continuation everything before was written around the books, so books have correlation with all written of the past, games are trying to make a sequel for the story in the books, but even with that it makes sense why Ciri can take the role of contracting witcher, even if she isnt a "true witcher" she still can do the same just with some alterations as she cant do some witcher activities, but also can do some that "true witchers" cant so I am excited to how they innovate the formula around her :D)
I can’t remember… but I thought they even addressed the “only men can be Witchers” in the games. Like it was another obstacle Ciri was overcoming. Even if they didn’t address it… becoming a Witcher, while the world says you can’t, just sounds more badass. I can’t think of any reason why Ciri deserves any hate. Incel-brained complaints is all I hear.
I’ve always disliked the graphical change in games that occurred in the mid 2010s. Skyrim (2011)was good, Halo 4(2012) was okay. But about 2013 with GTA4 is when the shift occurred. Everything started getting glossy. Destiny(2014) and Advanced Warfare(2014). 2015 was the nail in the coffin with Fallout 4 and Witcher 3.
@@Xiaara_Quala yeah...and those "chatters" have never touched a woman, nor had a woman even look their way. Sad...Ciri was always being primed for the next protag. I'm excited and this trailer was amazing
I don't get it. I think she looks stunning. Has a nice older vibe (older then a teenager) to her, and she is rugged which is normal if you travel on horse back for work. Even in the book Geralt was not striking handsome, he suppose to be a bit scary and has a charm about him, but he was never suppose to be stright up handsome. I was kinda on the edge for Cavil playing Witcher, Mikelsen would be a better fit according to books, but he did aigt
No, it says only boys survived the trial of grasses. There was no further research into how they could make it work for females especially after they lost all the equipment to make new witchers during the raids.
@@4sakend1 No, but if you think about it for two seconds you could remember how many powerfull sorceresses and mages, very intelligent vampires and others are there in the end that could help with that.
I’m just curious why she can drink potions. Ciri shouldn’t be able to drink Witcher potions since she never took the Trial of the Grasses cause it could’ve killed her like many other children. Wonder how they’re gonna explain that. Is there another Witcher school, sorceress, or apothecary who diluted the Witcher potions for basic people to consume? Expected her to be a spell sword badass but would’ve liked her not drinking potions. Makes her more distinct from Gerald and other Witchers. She could’ve been a founder of a new Griffin school for normal human Witcher that study sorcery and swordsmanship. Also women also can become Witchers like in the School of the Cat. But they have to take the Trial of Grasses as children for it to have a chance of success.
In one of the endings of witcher 3 she takes the path and becomes a full fledged witcher. That's probably why she can use the potions. Also the elven blood probably makes her more resilient against those potions as well.
@@adamsarufan2656 She became a witcher in title only, she didn't get the mutations/go through to trial to be able to use potions. If it's just her elven blood, HOW DID SHE FIGURE OUT THAT SHE COULD USE THEM? Did she just say screw it and down a potion? 50/50 shot she's either able to use them or becomes a potato? I just don't like the idea of her blood being an excuse for lazy writing, a magic be all and end all.

Yeah I don't really want to play as Geralt for Witcher 4, I was actually really happy he got to retire in a nice manor with vineyards and have a good ending that Witchers never get. Ciri as witcher makes the most sense since that was every ending where she doesn't become empress

People seem to also forget that characters age as well 😅 witcher 4 takes place who knows how long after 3 so yeah ciri is gonna look different and sound different plus the cast has aged too (except geralts his coice actor still sounds the same which thats fine his voice is just awesome to listen to.) Im still willing to give her a shot cause the world of witcher is beautiful and gritty and full of mythical creatures that are amazing, terrifying and some utterly disgusting to look at. Im interested to see wat new creatures they'll be adding cause the one ciri fought i dont remember it in game or in the books so it has to be new and ciri will be using abilites Geralt was never able to use himself. The move she used against the creature was called bolt so lighting moves will definitely be fun to use😁 they did say Geralt will have a role in witcher 4 we just dont know yet so we have to be patient and wait for more stuff to be revealed 🙂
I searched for a quote that explicity says that women CAN'T transform into witchers. I didnt found one. Triss tells Vesemir and the other witchers back in book 3 that they should stop giving ciri herbs and other ingridients because she is afraid that that could change her body. Just like the first changes for witchers. From my point of view we didnt saw any female witcher yet not because it isnt possible but no school even tried it. If you look careful her slit eyes are different to those of the cat eyes like Geralt etc.
If I remember correctly, it was that only 2-3 in 10 boys make it through the mutations. But I think that they did try the mutation on girls, but none made it. However, Ciri isn't a usual human, she's of the elder blood, she can literally travel through time and space itself, so I think she could easily be the first female mutant. The problem in the trailer is that Ciri uses magic outside of her elder blood abilities. In the books she gives up the ability to perform magic in order to save the life of a unicorn. She literally 'wyrzeka się magii', which means something along the lines of 'cuts all ties to magic'. And Ciri using magic is the only thing I think has no good reason to be in this game
@Ida_Jane yes the trial of grass has not a great chance of survival. We know that most boys died. We dont have proof if girls were ever tested. Maybe by the cat school, its roumored that they have elven witchers. But at the point we dont know how it affect girls. Ciri is different with her elder blood. Maybe thats the reason why her eyes look different than other witchers. Or maybe her trial of grass was different. I didnt see your point with the magic. Maybe if you have the book and the chapter, that would be great. But overall she uses signs, which are basic magic skills, and some other magic tricks, nothing in the league of a triss in riva or something like that.
We all remember her looks in Witcher 3. If the makers would have kept her original looks in witcher 4 then it would be great. Main problem is that she doesn't look like adult Ciri either.

my memory could fail me but as far as i remember there was nothing said about females not being able to go thought trials. lorewise its just that vesemir and geralt did not want to take the risk of losing cirilla. i may be wrong but one of the reasons that there was no female witchers xould be that „the witcher” (pl. wiedźmin) itself is a term derived from „witch” that both in english and polish languages has no male counterpart, thus author could try to inflate the word to make it feel more male-like. the witcher in lore is totally different being than male witch, but i think that this is the origin of the word itself. therefore, coming back to the main topic, lack of female witchers in books might be the effect of this; making female version of a word that derives originally from the female only word that was made sound manly sounds weird. in polish: „wiedźma (witch- Female) -> wiedźmin (the word turned male using suffix) -> wiedźminka (the word turned back female using yet another suffix on top of that, since the meaning of witcher is different than original word) anyhow, ciri becomes witcher just for the gameplay reasons only, if u ask me. this way she will be able to pop witcher potions without hurting (more likely killing) herself and such, that geralt could do in previous iterations of the game.

@@Matti785Wasn't the bisexual thing criticized as "a macho-male author's sexual fantasy" when the books came out in the 90'ies? He wrote women as strong powerful mages, and boys/men could only gain a fraction of magical powers by becoming witchers. Ciri isn't even morethan both ...magically above Jennifer, and skillfully trained in the art of swords and monsterslaying. The books aren't really "woke" and def. not feministic, as the women aren't just handed their powers due to their gender, but have to earn it, like the male have ro earn theirs. These days we see alot of the apposite with "toxic feminism" like with Batwoman series, Mulan liveaction version, Cpt. Marvel, which all had their powers just for being born with them or entitled to them due to their gender and need for "revenge on men". I believe this negative trend is why some men react negatively to those stories with "force fed gender-politics agenda", and its all bad for the gender equality in the long term. Maybe Antrej Sapkowsky was actually ahead of his time with the books, OR non-toxic female heroins have already been around (Sarah Connor, Ripley etc.)?...
Crazy that these people are worried about The Witcher IV being woke because a woman is the protagonist, but they aren't worried that the game will be just as buggy and broken like The Witcher III and Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. Makes a shit ton of sense.
Yep, just the reality of the majority of modern gamers, they are to emotionally and politically charged to care about the actual integrity of the game and instead yell "woke" whenever something makes the upset. It will only get worse as we progress further in the 20s.
@N0lukc I think people have forgotten the gameplay is the most important part of a game. If the gameplay isn't fun/doesn't work right dur to bugs, it's very hard to enjoy the story. Story is important, but I've finished games. I didn't like the story, but the gameplay was incredibly fun
If the game is shit then they will say it's because the game is woke and if it turns out to be the next masterpiece they will stop calling it woke, so they themself can play it. I have often seen the argument this or that game is woke and it is bad! But the game wasn't bad because a gay character was mentioned or because a woman was a pilot ir something like that, the game was bad because of gameplay, story and shit like that.
@jackwriter1908 Exactly, and it's the same with movies, shows, anime, comics, etc. Sure, there are times where there are things that are woke and it was a actual problem with the game (Concord is a big example cause why tf is a robot that should be non-binary a he/him but a human male is non-binary? That game was a mess in general), but 98.5% of the time, the game is bad for multitude of actual good reasons like terrible story, characters, gameplay, graphics, etc.

It's amazing how thoughts can be so diverse and lose out on enjoyment. My first thoughts were 'That can't be ciri, she was too old for the grasses' but then finding out it WAS ciri and that she gets to use potions and two swords just makes me excited for the story on how and the awesome things she gets to do with magic! That chain was amazing!
Back then they didnt make it the main selling point "This game has a female lead, shes gay, and if you dont like that, you are a sexist bigot and we dont want you playing our game." I dont mind women as the MC. In fact, 99% of gamers dont care. Its about how you present it that matters. Concords marketing was all about how diverse the cast is, very little about the game play. If portal has been released today, it would still sell gangbusters. Because the marketing and story wouldnt focus on "strong woman." It would focus on gameplay and fun. Intergalactic is going to flop because they are focusing on the MC being a woman and anyone who doesnt like that, dont buy it.
I hate that some people say this. Like I admit if I see something that is actually woke or intentionally DEI I will judge that. To be fair, Im just curius how they gonna sell that she got the mutations since that would only have happened after the Witcher 3. So long as it makes since Im fine with it. Also, I wonder if they are gonna take into account the multiple endings of the Witcher 3 or if they just gonna focus on a singular cannon ending.
Well the only ending that makes some kind of sense is the one where Ciri is reported "dead" to the emperor but she works with Geralt as an apprentice (don't remember if she's a full witcher in that ending or not) the other ones wouldn't really work
Look, canon or not, the game establish how fucked up the process to become a Witcher actually is, how likely people are to die during it. Why Ciri, who is already established as having super powers would need to go through it is beyond me, it feels contrived like they had to make her a Witcher physically instead of just one in deed.
First of all, nowhere is it stated that only boys can undergo the Trials, only that they don't even know if girls would survive. The Cat's School made female witchers in the past, and given how Lambert was a friend to a few Cats across games and books, maybe they found a way for Ciri to undergo the Trials even as an adult? Even though the books and games follow mainly Geralt, Ciri is the MAIN FOCUS of both, she is the main focus, despite not being the main protagonist. She was in relationships with at least one woman in THE BOOKS, that came out years before the games, and in W3 you can tell that one dude on Skellige that "I prefer women" (i paraphrase) Also you look at a TRAILER appearance, as if Geralt doesn't look WAY FUCKING different than his trailer self....
There's actually nothing in the books or games (that I know of) saying that women can't be witchers, just that they haven't been witchers, probably because of the society that exists in this world. If it's something to do with the trial of the grasses, Ciri's got weird-ass innate magic powers, and Uma survived the trial long enough to turn back into a real boy. She could get through it, especially if the trial was updated by surviving witchers like Geralt to be less deadly.
It’s kinda based on in universe assumption that women wouldn’t make as good witchers as men and it is offhandedly stated all the experiments with girls lead to their deaths - then again, the procedure already had a 1/10 survival rate for boys so it might’ve just been bad luck
@@Herr_GamerCiri being a grown adult is a grover threat than her gender. The process straight up requires children on the cusp of puberty. The nature of the developing body or something similar is what allows some to adapt to the metamorphosis. Making her function exactly like TW3 Geralt just seems uninspired to me. Still, I reserve the right to be surprised.
While I can't remember where exactly it's stated, I believe it's more because they've tried to make female Witchers, but none of them survived all of the trials. If you want my personal theory as to why they can't, it's probably hormonal differences between men and women. As for why it worked for Uma despite him obviously being f-ed up is because he was subjected to only a partial dosage of the TOG, and even then, to my memory, he still only bearly survives.
@@fastgunnns3881 you should also consider witchers were invented in a time humanity was on the bring of extinction from monsters. Avallach barely survived, but if he’s still on good terms with Ciri I don’t find it unrealistic he’d be able to modernize the ritual. To my knowledge, the TOG are unchanged from the time of the Conjunction, so it was made with crude magic and maintained that way to avoid anyone pulling a Salamandra and creating an army of effective witcher soldiers
It’s been a very long time since I read the books and haven’t read the ones released post video games. @Khantext12 Nope. It's always the people who don't actually care about the franchise whining, lol.

So we will play LADY OF PLACE AND TIME? There's nothing like playing one of the most powerful characters in the universe.
Thank you. I thought I was misremembering that.
Siri from apple?
Well said.
Hell, the tutorial level from 3 is literally a glimpse of Ciri’s training. It may have been a dream, but it was based on reality
Yes, but she has witcher eyes meaning she went through the trial.

Literally the entire plot of Witcher 3 is preparing ciri to become Geralts successor
Yea but let's be real. Geralt or ciri. Nobody wants to play as ciri
@@lanserilstorm8414 I do.

Reasons:
1.she is woman. 2. It is very risky. Risk she doesn't need to take. She is already strong and even if she wasn't this was is way way too risky. 3. She is an adult. as a Polish guy and a fan of the Witcher series, I have to say that Ciri could be a Witcher according to the books, the only problem with the Trial of Grasses is that the potions taken by Ciri would have a bad effect on her hormones during puberty, which is why Triss was angry at Gerald when she heard that they were training a woman to be a Witcher, not because she couldn't, but because she wanted Ciri to mature physically and mentally. because it's worth remembering that statistically only 3 out of 10 children survive the Trial of Grasses, and become Witchers.

First, that a major plot point of Witcher 3 was studying, reverse engineering, and altering the creation formula and process of Witchers. Second, her adoptive mother and sister are both on the short list of candidates for ‘strongest mage alive’.

Just to add to your statement. In books it was said that boys had higher chance of surviving mutation, therefore they where prime subjects. Also in books , is implied that the cat school also trained female witchers. And the last argument: If Uma could undergo first steps of mutation, then ciri also can , especialy with help of two powerfull scorseress ( yenefer and trias)
Bearing in mind that my knowledge of the witcher is purely based on the games, wouldn't she be unable to become a witcher anyway, even if she was a man? Isn't the whole issue that the knowledge of how to make the mutagen that creates witchers has been lost? Am I wrong?
@@jaredmorgan5237 nope. Witchers ( at least those in kaer mohren) stil have recipes and knowledge. But when school was attacked wizards died. And without wizard/ scorserer/ whatever english word is very very risky. Almost sudicial. With mage 1 out of 10 survived. Without? Even worse
I said the same thing to someone yesterday! They were complaining abt Ciri being the new protagonist and I even said “dude, Geralts whole story evolves around him protecting Ciri and training her to brave the world on her own. And now that we finally got to that part you’re mad.” Besides, Ciri could easily be the strongest Witcher to have ever existed, with Elven blood and the ability to cast magic, not only limited to quick signs, and being trained by Geralt who (I think) is the hands down the best Witcher when it comes to hunting monsters and knowing their weaknesses, plus his swordplay was like flawless. Combine all that and you have a SICK character and protagonist. Weirdos would rave about it if was some muscular god who was slaying monsters, casting powerful spells and could teleport with a nickname like “lady (or sir) of space”. Ciri is just the next natural step in the series and I’m stoked for it

She is like wine... if you are expecting it to be all sweet without the bitterness of alcohol... the joke is on you 😂
Plus lore-wise she doesn't even need to undergo the witcher process. Her base powers themselves were hella OP in the book.
She is not a witcher. No one cares about the power and everyone knows that she is the most powerfull in teh series but she is not a witcher. She is not gonna cast signs brew potions and such.
@@Arad-u1q Even though she isn't a witcher, she is way more powerful than a witcher. She is Elder Blood. She has the ability to make witcher potions. Maybe we will even get a backstory about what happened with her powers when she became a witcher (this is one of the witcher 3 endings). You would know, if u actually followed the actual lore of the games, series and books. You would also know that she wanted to become a witcher, many many many times. I'm personally excited to see how they continue the lore and if it's well explained... also the books, games and series were always about her, not just Gerald or Yen.
Always figured she called herself a witcher because the training and the work, not because of the mutation. I am however curious for why and how she drinks the potion in the trailer. Elder blood makes it possible? A bit weak but easiest explanation. Different potion? We'd probably hear that mentioned somewhere.
Went through trial of the grasses after witcher 3? Even less likely.
I don't mind playing as her though, I just hope they got rid of the teleport she had in witcher 3. It annoyed me for some reason

Im 100% on your side btw, she is so cool, she looks AMAZING, I am absolutely looking forward to it, Allthough I love Geralt
Yeah because a hot protagonist is everything that matters in gaming 🤦🏼♂️
In general, calling a video game Charakter hot while over the age of 10 is concerning. Maybe someone should check your hard drive dude.
The cat school witchers being women is from the tabletop rpg, not the books as far as I’m aware.
Just not too much not to break it
To add to all of this:
TW4 is obviously going to take place years after TW3, so it's not like nothing has happend in that time.
Not to mention that a big part of the game's marketing is the new School of Lynx, which Ciri even has a Medallion of in this Trailer.
CDPR clearly wanted this Trailer to make us question a lot of stuff - and it's honestly concerning how many people are completely oblivious to this...
@TheCursedCat1927good point but School of the Lynx is fanmade no? I'm pretty sure it's school of the cat, like school of the viper/bear.
Ciri got her medallion from Leo who was from School of the Cat
you mentioned the lore
the lore says that girls can't be witchers
because they can't survive the trials
only little boys who survived the trials of crasses can become witchers 😊
The game is going to he woke based on what the CEO said and the initiatives the company took and that is a fact. Plus that is people's cope about canon, the game also says so. Not only can't women become Witchers and many houses got destroyed, you must be a child to go through through the process. Bacially they will do a girl boss thing.
Well then they might as well bend it a little further and recast her as a man.
This is accurate. I've never heard anyone call the original Tomb Raider series "Woke". Just a bunch of people calling her eye candy.
right like if a woman exists in any form of media its either woke or people sexualize tf out of her
Comparing The Witcher to a series that has always been female lead isn't really the same thing.
Yeah, but Tomb Raider now is woke because Lara doesn't have unrealistic sized boobs anymore. How fucking dare they give her prominent muscles when she's constantly climbing or using heavy weaponry? That's not Lara anymore; that's a man! The Tomb Raider fanbase can be so cringe at times.
@@mynamedoesntfi--6161 The fact the Tomb Raider is and has always been a badass girl boss make her woke from jump.
@@fonz1776 That's not the point. I think they're referring to the fact that people call games woke when the female protagonist isn't trying to appeal to the 'male gaze'. Nobody called Tomb Raider woke when Lara had an incredibly unrealistic body shape and dressed in extremely ludicrous outfits, but it's considered woke now that she looks like a real woman. People aren't pissed that we're playing Witcher 4 as a woman, but that we're playing as a woman who isn't trying to appeal to anyone's sexual desires.
What the heck are they on? she's HOT!! Rough around the edges but a Witcher character not being rough is not possible!
Rough is part of the charm.
Why did she get Botox in the cheeks though?
Honestly rather than a female main character, they need to be more concerned about how it's using unreal engine instead of making its own game engine and how the studio behind the game has lost many talents that worked on previous games.
And some other things.
Also apparently there's some plot inconsistencies that if not explained in game would be problematic.
And just to be clear i have not even played much of witcher at all nor do I know much about it.
@@IdefinitelyExistIThink I think you bring up a good point on unreal engine. The in game footage is on one of the new nivida graphics cards. Hopefully it will be optimized for Lower end GPu’s at its launch.

I don't wanna play a damn kid dolled up to appeal to gooners, I want to play an actual adult!
Nah ciri being a witcher is unnecessary, i don't mind a game with her as the mc but she DOESN'T NEED to be a witcher with mutation (she is a honourary witcher, as in she is called a witcher but isn't really a witcher)
It just extra work to justify unnecessary additions also it not really about the characters being fap material (although some people do go to that extreme length) it more about uglification and in this case i don't think it that worthy of an outrage especially since trailer booty man geralt looked quite different from the release one BUT witcher 3 ciri looks way better (no "aging" would justify that facial structure change still not a deal breaker) at the end of the day it just a trailer

@Sweetzluf Fair enough, guess that makes sense. Let's hope you're right. Wish ya a wonderful day👍
As long as the story is connected then I’m fine with this
Me too, but i hope it's like the new Dragon age
Witcher books are literally about Ciri... Witcher 3 - same thing, CIRI. HOW it could be not connected?
Because in my story line she becomes the empress of nilfgard so i dont know how it will connect x)
We don't know of Ciri could become a Witcher as far as the books go.
We know that:
- 4/10 boys survive the trial of grasses
- the trial was performed on girls but all of them died
- Ciri is not any woman, she's incredibly powerful
It's only clear all of the girls that attempted to pass the trial died, the witchers stopped taking girl children altogether rather than experiment further.

Bruh shes literally the main character BESIDE Geralt. The entire setting of the Witcher 3 is completely about Ciri.
Thats all well and good, but every single franchise has switched out their male protagonists for female. Zelda, Star Wars, Uncharted, Resident Evil, Ghost of Yotei.... you must not be very good at pattern recognition. If it waste. different time, Ciri might be OK.

Since it was never actually said that women can't become Witchers - neither in the Books, nor the Games - there aren't any to our knowledge, because they just never tried.
It's a tradition for the Wolf School to only focus on boys, because - as explained by Sapkowski - it was simply easier to find a family willing to give up their sons, as opposed to their daughters (and over the years it just sort of turned into an unwritten rule).
So I guess [I take your glasses away].
@TheCursedCat1927 i mean that be so. I was joking it. I was referencing the way aizen says it with his glasses on

I swear, this is giving me "why does she have a beard??" Flashbacks from horizon zero dawn

Yeah, Tris even makes them stop feeding her weird shrooms they give Ciri to 'enhance' her, thinking they were preparing her.
No, it says only boys survived the trial of grasses. There was no further research into how they could make it work for females especially after they lost all the equipment to make new witchers during the raids.
So they changed the lore to make her survive?
It just looks like lazy writing.
Geralt looks like a male model at 100 years old. Ciri's voice actor isn't returning btw.

What does woke mean?
@@TheHeart-e5nsocially aware of injustices but it got turned into a term against anything isn’t a white male or conventionally attractive woman. The reason it got turned into a hollow way of saying it’s something people don’t like was poorly written stories and characters of different race/gender or sexual orientation. my memory could fail me but as far as i remember there was nothing said about females not being able to go thought trials. lorewise its just that vesemir and geralt did not want to take the risk of losing cirilla.
i may be wrong but one of the reasons that there was no female witchers xould be that „the witcher” (pl. wiedźmin) itself is a term derived from „witch” that both in english and polish languages has no male counterpart, thus author could try to inflate the word to make it feel more male-like.
the witcher in lore is totally different being than male witch, but i think that this is the origin of the word itself.
therefore, coming back to the main topic, lack of female witchers in books might be the effect of this; making female version of a word that derives originally from the female only word that was made sound manly sounds weird.
in polish:
„wiedźma (witch- Female) -> wiedźmin (the word turned male using suffix) -> wiedźminka (the word turned back female using yet another suffix on top of that, since the meaning of witcher is different than original word)
anyhow, ciri becomes witcher just for the gameplay reasons only, if u ask me. this way she will be able to pop witcher potions without hurting (more likely killing) herself and such, that geralt could do in previous iterations of the game.
I'm baffled that some people are calling her ugly, when she's conventionally attractive.
Probably because she doesn't look like her Witcher 3 model
@@keyblademasterclarkyeah but the trailers have always been different from the character models so it’s not a proper comparison until we se her in game model
Ya ,like she is not the prettiest girl but she definitely looks like a stunning older woman in her late 30s. And she has that witcher grit and looks perfect for the witcher role and for the game.
Didnt the hate ghost of yoeti started because the actress posted stuff about white men? Im a POC and even i find it cringe when people say they are against racism but say stuff about white people

@@Shellshock39two things can be right. And most of the people who will play the game is a man. There is simply no two way about it. It like making a chick flick movie and making the main focus on fast cars. It simply won't sell.
@Shellshock39 from what I saw it didn't start from that. Most people reaction at the PlayStation thing didn't care until they found out who the VA was
Calling out the hypocrisy with that last line lol
My main worry is honestly her strength. In TW3 she was op as hell, with more experience using her powers she might as well be a demigod.
The witcher 3, at the beginning with the griffin quest. There's a character who is shunned from the village for having a gay relationship with the lords son. If that exact quest came out today people would be screaming woke for days.
Also Ciri is bisexual, as written in the books.
Wokism has entered forcefully into companies and life in general in these months, if not a couple of years, and people have become half paranoid. I don't blame those who now look at new games with suspicion, but who judges the works and doesn't know the previous game stories, like "The Witcher" in this case
Why is she reminding me so much of Elsie Bray or Exo Stranger from destiny.
You can fix bugs but narrative and plot cannot be fixed after launch. Also they will use another engine for Witcher 4
Yeah I don't get people to complain about stuff like this lol
They're terminally online and have victim complexes.

Slapping Woke on anything your cant Bait to is diabolically mind numbing.
She looks so beautiful in the new game. The tired, the bitter, the frustration. I can feel that too. It’s nice I’ll be able to play a woman who doesn’t look like an anime character.
Hey man, don't disrespect anime.
@ I like anime. But I’m just saying people my age (30s) never look age appropriate
It’s actually crazy cause back when stuff like portal was released nobody cared like yes you can’t really see chell most of the time but still
Back then they didnt make it the main selling point "This game has a female lead, shes gay, and if you dont like that, you are a sexist bigot and we dont want you playing our game."
I dont mind women as the MC.
But even without playing the games I knew it was obvious Ciri was in line to be the new protagonist. Even more talking with a friend that is a huge fan of the book and games.
And here I am, as a 47 year old man, still upset that I didn't get to play StarCraft Ghost. 😂
I don't really care who I play as, so long as the game is fun, and that the in-game avatar is a badass.
Also, I barely put any time into Witcher III and it's extremely obvious from the very beginning of the game that Ciri was going to be a protagonist at some point. Fricking Geralt is literally TRAINING her for the job!
@@Xoulrath_ all she learned was identifying monsters and sword play. It takes more than that to be a witcher. She doesn't have a strengthened body, or sight. She never took the trial of the grasses and would die if she used potions or decoctions.
@joshhord903 yes, yes, you're right. It is literally IMPOSSIBLE for her to have leaned anything else at any other point in time. 🙄
@@Xoulrath_ how can she learn to have a mutated body or eyesight? Tell me that? Sure she could learn spells, and learn potions and decoctions, but the potions and decoctions would kill her, as she has no immunity to them(trial of the grasses). She should be a sorceress with her magical ability, witcher spells are a waste of time for someone with her ability. And without the use of potions or decoctions she would be slaughtered by certain monsters.
i like to immerse myself in the game, i cant do that playin as a fem,ale
@joshhord903 dude, go crawl back into your basement. Or touch some grass and breath some fresh air.
What part of me stating that I barely played Witcher III did you not understand? I don't know anything about the story other than the game showing her early training at the beginning of the game. Maybe give Witcher IV a chance to answer your questions before you shit on the game because it's got a woman as the protagonist.
This isn’t a DEI game, but they certainly exist and it’s a huge problem
It is tho one of the ceos is a blue hair lesbian

@@stanleyusneverything good is woke.
She was in relationships with at least one woman in THE BOOKS, that came out years before the games, and in W3 you can tell that one dude on Skellige that "I prefer women" (i paraphrase)
Also you look at a TRAILER appearance, as if Geralt doesn't look WAY FUCKING different than his trailer self....
Ciri undergoing the risky mutations also doesn't make much sense when she could go full spellsword or utilize tools and skills adapted from other worlds.
It’d be pretty dumb to sacrifice a signifficant portion of the half of the population with the ability to replenish the numbers to make one of them a super soldier.
But I believe it was stated that the mutations developed by females were always eventually fatal. It was the reason why Ciri was given the physical training but was forbidden from taking any Witcher potions.

Fr the funniest part about them is they call other people sensitive but can’t handle a woman being a protagonist that’s as sensitive as it gets!
