Tony lives near Perth, in WA, and runs a farm that produces a lot of vegetables for both the home and export market. They also have a meat facility.
But it’s potatoes that Tony is best known for.
He grows a whole range of different varieties, but his favourites are Royal Blue, with a yellow flesh: “They’re good for everything,” he says.
“I like them roasted. I’ll eat the potatoes before I eat the meat.”
He and his brothers started leasing land for growing when they were in their 20s, helped by their parents. He says there was never a plan, they just got up early, worked 16-18 hours, slept and did it all again the next day.
Retail, meat and egg production followed, then grapes and mangoes. “It just happened.” One brother pulled out but Tony and Vince are still going.
He grew up in a close family that was part of a tightly knit Italian community - “I didn’t know there was an English language before I went to school” - and helped his father on a small 3-acre plot before and after school.
His father had a potato licence - WA was the only state where potatoes were regulated. If you had an outside job, you couldn’t have a licence: Tony says people got around this by putting the licence under a partner’s name. But Tony’s father didn’t realise this, and he lost his licence.
Tony never forgot how this affected his father and as soon as he was old enough, he got his own licence to grow spuds. They bought more licences and came into conflict with the potato-regulating body over their policies to restrict the number of growers, which Tony said caused unnecessarily high prices.
His fight continued for 20 years until, in 2016, the McGowan government ended potato regulation.
Now Tony is sharing his love of growing with his own children, who are all involved with the business.

Same with beekeeping in SA. Corruption involving competing business and their relationships with government public servants.

My garden beds have become infested with onion weed. I have been trying to get rid of it for 3 years. It is so tall, almost twice the height of my actual plants. It is so depressing, as my poor plants are flowering prolifically and are putting up a good fight. I just can't keep up with the weeds. Any advice for onion weed please? I am in the Alpine region of Victoria.

Digging the bulbs is the only non chemical method. I never found solarisation to work. They are susceptible to glyphosate
