    Another set of space updates my friends, and of course stealing the limelight on all fronts was SpaceX. It may have been the lead up to Starship’s Orbital Flight Test 2 with Booster 9 and Ship 25 do you think? Anyway, it was all set to go, but now a brand new setback. The Starship launch has just been delayed! Is this an easy fix? Yes, there is a very good reason why this video has been released a little earlier this week. This didn’t stop them launching a plethora of Falcon 9 rockets in the meantime. Lots to jump into there, plus a bunch of other updates from the wider landscape that is commercial space, hold on tight! The next few days are going to be wild.

    Good video! I'm slowly getting more excited for this launch... but honestly, what comes after will be far crazier. Hopefully the launch will be a success - after all, the ship and booster are quite old already, engines old, systems already outdated. There are several newer ships and boosters waiting for launch. Things are gonna get real exciting once they start actually loading payloads into the ships!

    • @NorseGraphic
      @NorseGraphic 6 месяцев назад

      They’re launching to collect data. Particularly when the booster and ship reenters the atmosphere at high velocity. They’ll probably try a ‘soft landing’ despite the ‘hard landing’ in the description of their livestream. If they fail getting a soft landing, nobody would be the wiser about their attempt.

    I reall think SpaceX needs to build a simple catching tower (no pipes or infrastructure) to practice catching Superheavy boosters before they risk all that Stage 0 equipment on a live catch. It might even make sense for a few years so they can check out and refurbish a used booster on the catching tower while a different booster goes through final tests on the launching tower.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 6 месяцев назад +1

      Last I heard they were also planning on catching starship in the same way. I don't understand why they haven't made a static catch tower for practice, unless they're relying on the chopsticks to move and align with the booster and starship as they're landing. I mean, they could've been launching suborbital starships to a nearby static tower and tweaking that aspect of flight ever since they first landed SN15. That gives me the impression that their plan is to actively use the chopsticks for alignment during the catch...but based on how slow they move during stacking I don't see how much difference it'll make.

      Not only is SpaceX launching prototypes of one version of their Starship to test and develop base vehicle technology, but they are similarly launching from a prototype Orbital Launch Mount and Rocket Suppression System and includes the prototype Integration Tower. I imagine a bit more development of a tower will be involved for a catch attempt.

    • @chrismullin9437
      @chrismullin9437 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for reminding me that they intend to catch a Starship while a booster is waiting (and empty) on the same tower. Yes, it feels like they could have been launching and catching Starships for the last two years. I wonder how far up a Starship could go by itself? Just to tweak Blue Origin's Shepard... @@Skinflaps_Meatslapper

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 6 месяцев назад

      @@chrismullin9437 Sounds super sketchy saying it out loud, doesn't it 🤣
      It's been theorized that it would be possible to convert a starship to a SSTO by reducing the payload bay area with additional propellant tanks, and then adding a few extra raptors to compensate for the increased load at low altitude. The only problem is that in this configuration it's not very practical/efficient/profitable in comparison to a starship and booster, and it would be LEO only. So yeah, starship could destroy the Shepard in that regard by actually achieving orbit, but would do so at higher cost when measured in dollars per pound to orbit. In some ways it would've simplified their testing and development had they just made starship an SSTO first, ironed out all flight testing and whatnot, then used the booster as a supplement instead of a necessity. That way when it came time to integrate the two it would be far more seamless of an operation, and they'd have multiple configurations to choose from depending on the mission. SSTO starships on boosters would be a more viable way to get further out of earth's gravity well without orbital refueling as well, so if you wanted something in GEO, you'd be able to do it in a single launch. Just speculating at this point, but you get the idea. An extra 75-100 tons of propellant in LEO can get you places, even with a massive starship.

    • @chrismullin9437
      @chrismullin9437 6 месяцев назад

      Oh, I wasn't thinking of reaching orbit, just a straight up and straight down flight with the normal configuration, to get more experience with heat shield tile attachment, re-entry at some sort of speed, the last minute flip maneuver, and maybe catching things with chopsticks (on a catch-only tower). @@Skinflaps_Meatslapper

    What would make the most sense for me is SpaceX building another tower with just the arms and a super basic super heavy stand for catch testing. If a catch attempt goes wrong you would cause damage to your "catch testing tower", while not slowing down your potential launch attempts because the "main launch tower" along with all the other Stage 0 hardware (everything in that launch table and the water deluge system) would not be at risk. Seems like the most risk averse way to test catching to me, but I know SpaceX likes being space cowboys so who knows what they will actually do.

    I was 16 when, with my father and brother and mother, we watched the first astronauts walk on the moon in a live, global telecast and watched them joyride in their $70M go-kart. But I hadn't seen anything to surpass that technical feat until I saw the SpaceX boosters successfully reenter the atmosphere and land themselves on their tiny little target pads! Over and over again, proving the complete feasibility of the concept. It was like watching poetry in motion--and it still, to my eyes today, looks like science fiction! What an achievement SpaceX has been. If anyone has a prayer of making spaceflight economically viable and practical in the 21st century, it will be SpaceX.

    Second tower at BC: My guess is that it will be built in the near future. And it will be earmarked for Booster and Ship landings, not launches. So, that second tower would consist of the tower, the hoist system, and the chopsticks.
    There would be no OLM or quick disconnects for the Booster and Ship, which are needed only for launches.
    The idea is to use that tower to perfect the landing techniques for the Booster and the Ship without interrupting launches from the first BC tower. And, secondly, to eliminate the possibility of damage to the OLM from a missed landing attempt on the first tower.

    I think your speculation makes sense. If they start launching, and getting useful payloads to orbit, they’ll want to not blow up their only launch pad. Having a second one to try landing at without risking a year without launching makes a lot of sense.

      Also not needing to lift the 2nd stage onto the top of a booster means it could be shorter and cheaper. They might still build full launch ability but wouldn't have to.

    Starship flight two ended with a double RUD of both vehicles.
    The engines (ALL THE ENGINES) performed perfectly.
    The hot staging however caused more problems than it cured.
    After hot staging happens and the booster separates you can see an explosion in the top of the booster that destroyed everything.

    The new space plane reminded me of the Chrysler Single stage shuttle (SERV). I think the SERV was to use a different high efficiency engine and may have existed as a scaled prototype involved in several successful test launches. Good luck to them!

    Thank you for showing the rest of the fans what some of the environmental impacts could be. Too many times there is speculation and hyperbole about environmental impacts without anyone knowing why. People don’t understand what our impacts are and take it for granted. Thanks for being awesome Marcus!!😊

    i just realized something... the cyber truck isnt designed for this planet. elon is simply testing it here. cant wait to see the final version of the cyber truck intended for Mars.

      Not specifically the cyber truck or any other current Tesla model... but yeah, it's not coincidence that Musk decided to invest in electric vehicle technologies... internal combustion engines don't work well on Mars, and the battery and motor technologies have also been put to good use at SpaceX

    It is so positive when a grid-fin goes wonkey BEFORE a launch. Each thing that can go wrong now ensures a more perfect flight after they... they... LIGHT THE FIRE!!!!!

    I suspect the hot staging section will be found to be a problem with the launch. The dome/deflector has a large flat surface on top, meaning it will take the full force of the sea level engines, thus building up a lot of pressure and increasing the likelihood of damage to either or both stages.

    Tnx for your update Marcus!
    I think its best for SpaceX to take their time getting things right as much as possible within mission parameters. Grid fins are a must if they plan to land the booster at all, which I doubt.
    Id be happy to wait another six months if it means ship 25 has a chance at landing back at Boca Chica.
    Perhaps ship 25 gets replaced for a newer more capable ship but hey who am I to complain?
    Lets Goooo! Sat 18th Nov '23 it is for now!
