The military helicopter was on a training exercise and very clearly entered air space that they WERE NOT supposed to enter causing this disaster. The pilot or whoever instructed them to fly there is at fault. Pilots depend on ATC as well as their own instruments to guide them safely into and out of airports. At night moving as fast as the planes are it is nearly impossible to react in time. Pilots that have had equipment fail have flown straight into the sides of mountains before at night because they had no idea it was there as it is so difficult to see. I don't mean to call the military pilots bad or anything they could have been excellent pilots but they were almost certainly the ones in the wrong here and paid with their lives and the lives of everyone on that plane. This is why the FAA is SOOOO strict on pilots because the consequences of a single mistake like flying too high in a flight path or too low can lead to stuff like this happening.
The helo was supposed to maintain visual on the plane as per atc. When plane has cleared they were free to go on their path. Supposedly they had their eyes on wrong airplane.

Reagan is a very very very busy airport. At night there are dozens of planes lined up in the air waiting to land. It’s a good chance the helicopter pilot didn’t see the plane they hit, but saw a different aircraft instead. The investigation will suss that out . Black box communications will hopefully clarify.
