The best advice I've ever gotten on my hot tub and wonderfully explained. I just got a spa for free and I have chlorine shock but my wife wants bromine for sanitization maintenance; you answered it perfectly!
Getting a tub in 2 weeks, Really looking forward to it. Your videos have been awesome and answered all the questions I had. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
This channel is the greatest, HUGE help!! I just bought ALL the recommended chemicals Used the YUK then drained my spa ??. Adding chemicals I think I have to much bromine. My spa is about 205 gal. I added 4 ounces of bromine. My test strips continue to show white. I keep adding more bromine and it stays white. Hind sight I think white means to much bromine????. If so how do I get my bromine down?
Thanks Dave! Different brands of test strips can use different colors, but all the ones I've used use white to mean no or ultra-low levels. But some brands are better than others and more accurate. Mine turns pink and then purple for chlorine/bromine levels. (I like Poolmaster's 4-way test strips on Amazon - amzn.to/3veXc5Y) But different brands of bromine work better too. I've tried liquid, power, and finally tablets in a floater, and ended up liking the tablets in a floater the best. I do have a whole video dedicated to bromine if you haven't seen it yet - ruclips.net/video/atScI1GMogc/видео.html
Hello. I typically use bromine granular shock as well as bromine floater. I ran out of the granular bromine shock and used a chorine shock instead. Can I place the bromine floater back and return to the bromine granular shock when I purchase it ? Do I need to drain the tub ?
Hi Marco. Typically bromine sanitizer and chlorine shock are just fine used together, so I don't think it's a big deal to switch between chlorine shock and a non-chlorine shock while using bromine the whole time. I have heard, however, that you should not switch between bromine and chlorine sanitizer. And if that's what happened, I probably would drain the water just to be safe.
Great videos! New hot tub owner here. Purchased a lot of different chemicals and starting to get it figured out. Question for you about shock... I'm using bromine as my sanitizer. I have Spa Guard enhanced shock (w/ Dichlor) and non-chlorine shock. I also have Leisure Time Renew non-chlorine shock (potassium peroxymonosulfate). 1. Can you recommend a chlorine shock that you like to use? 2. In purchased Leisure Time Spa 56 Chlorinating Granules (99% dichlor) - can I use this as a chlorine shock? Thank you
Thank you 🙏 I was in desperate need of Information ℹ️ I prefer the Bromine too:) But I definitely need something more powerful to Clean 🧼 the Water 💦 As far as Future Video Idea 💡 How about some Reviews of Inflatable Hot 🥵 Tubs? I am Loving 🥰 mine:) Good Luck 👍🍀

@@assmosis4573 not when dissolved in a massive amount of water... as in a hot tub. You can put chlorine in a bromine tub and bromine in a chlorine tub for various reasons (reactivation of bromine or chlorine to bromine conversion) You can go from chlorine to bromine in about a day but you cannot go from bromine to chlorine as the bromine lingers in the water too long. Lethal gasses are created when you mix dry chemicals together or in very small amounts of water
Hi Tracey. Cal-Hypo is a very strong chlorine shock, arguably better for pools. But it technically works fine with bromide tablets. But most importantly, don't add Cal-Hypo directly to your hot tub; it's too strong for that. Dilute it first in a container. You don't need much; about 1 oz of Cal-Hypo for maybe 8 oz of water. Thoroughly mix it and then add it to your hot tub. Ideally wear gloves and make sure to protect your eyes; this is strong stuff. Also, make sure and put the cover back on after adding it, as it's especially damaged by sun. Unlike other shocks, you'll want to wait a little longer before soaking, so check it with a test strip after about 1 hour.
I always start small, and I always dip a test strip in first. So maybe even just 2 tablespoons (I eyeball it; I don't measure exactly). You can always add more, but if you overdo it, you'll have to wait a day to 2 before soaking. After adding, wait 10-15 minutes (turn jets on) and test again.
Probably some copper in water and the combination of both chemical caused an oxidation. Wait an hour. Clean the filter , run the spa for a couple of hours. Filter will collect the green particles , clean filter again , then start over without mixing both chemicals
Hey Jeff, thanks for the video! I have a quick question for you. I bought a chlorine shock for my new hot tub. I currently have a bromine tablets floating in it and I crushed a few bromine tablets upon initially filling the tub. I did this because I was told that it would build a bank of bromide. My question is, if there is already a bromine tablet in the water as well as that crushed bromine can I add the chlorine shock as I was recommended to do for after I use the tub. Thanks so much!
Hi Joey. Yes, you can add the shock (probably weekly) with the floater in there. I would just check the levels before and after you do that just to make sure the overall chlorine/bromine levels don't get too high. Most floaters can be rotated to allow more or less access between the water & tablets. So just make sure (especially before you soak) that the overall levels on your test strip don't get too crazy. But that should work just fine. In fact, I just got a floater for bromine tablets that I'm experimenting with, so I'm doing this exact same thing! Thanks for being here! Jeff
@Hot Tub Owner HQ I currently have a floater with Leisure Time Brom tabs in it as a sanitizer. When I use a chlorine based shock, should I take the floater out of the water, then shock it? Or is it okay to leave the floater in and shock?
I use bromine for my 400 gallon tub. I used chlorine shock 2.25 Tblsp and 2 days later my bromine levels are still at 40 ppm on test strip? Did I do something wrong?
All of the levels in my hot tub are good except, bromine is testing 0, I have enough bromine tabs in it at all times but I have not shockrd it yet? What's my problem? Heeelllp😊
I like the videos. I have a hot tub and a swim tank. I have had hot tubs for over 20 years and never had any problem with the chemistry or skin issues. I keep it at 102 , have an ionizer, use a little chlorine and chlorine shock once a week. I just put in the swim tank (2500 gallons at 85deg)) and have not only wrestled with the chemistry but have ended up with eczema. So, besides using body washes I am converting to Bromine. In your videos, you say I can still use the chlorine shock in a Bromine hot tub. I assume that is true for the swim tank also. Is that correct?
New subscriber here. Thanks for the informative video. I have a Master Spa that we have been using Chlorine in, but I'd like to switch over to Bromine. Should I drain the water or are the two compatible? I only plan on using Bromine from now on, but I'm hoping the two don't react in some way if they're both present in the same tub. Thanks again!

I dont understand the difference between a Shock & a Sanitizer. Are my Bromine Tablets classed as a Sanitizer? But surely if my water uses Bromine Tablets I shouldn't use a Chlorine Shock?
It sounds like the bromine tablets are almost pointless. What would happen if you didn’t use a sanitizer at all and just shocked the tub every time you used it?
Hi, I’ve had my hydrojet Pro since May & manage the levels fairy well using chlorine & non chlorine shock once a week but recently my husband has developed a bad rash, I think he is allergic to the non chlorine shock! For this reason I am going to give Bromide a try, can I use the same floating feeder that came with the tub if I wash it thoroughly? Also will it take long to get the levels up with tablets? I’ve recently refilled the tub & using chlorine granuals so I’m going to let the levels drop as you suggested. Thank you 👍
Hi Caroline Sorry for my delay. Yes, using the same floater should be fine as long as you rinse it out. Sometimes rash can be from high pH levels too, so do make sure that's good as well.
Great instructional video. I have only owned hot tub for couple of months and I was wondering this exact situation. Can I use bromine sanitizer if I use chlorine shock! Thanks for clear, concise explanation. Well done!!!!
Not really. They recommend that, but it's not really necessary. I would leave the lid off for an afternoon if it gets a lot of sun (which destroys chlorine). I would run the jets, and then just wait a day or 2 until the chlorine levels don't register on a test strip. You should be just fine doing that. Great question!
@Amanda Hall Bromine tablets create a weak oxidation effect and has to be marked as such on the box for safety reasons. Yes you do still have to shock regularly or your water will be unsanitary.

Bromine tablets create a weak oxidation effect and has to be marked as such on the box for safety reasons. Yes you do still have to shock regularly or your water will be unsanitary.
