  • From Rust to Dawn with a Unique Crackle Effect
    The legendary Dawn company, known for hand tools since 1917, continues to produce their Vice model in Australia. Restoring my personal Vice, I opted for a custom paint job that strikes a balance between a mirror effect and showcasing the metal's imperfections. The result is a transformed Vice, transitioning from rust to a new dawn with a distinctive crackle effect paint. Preserving Dawn's legacy, this restoration highlights craftsmanship that has endured for over a century.

    A few things, I love your videos you put a unique spin on restorations you show how they should be which is fun. The title was very clever. The little hands popping up make me giggle and I'm glad you found a way to enjoy your hobby and spend time with your kids. my boys are young adults now but I still have them at home and they still help in the shop ( it's good having some extra muscle around) and have learned useful skills. That vise was in crazy good condition what an awesome find. Amazing restoration and I hope you were wearing your brown pants when your cabinet blew. thanks for sharing that restoration with everyone. would love to see you let the little ones go picking and do their own little project. Kinda curious to see what they would pick and the ideas they have. I did this when mine were little it's really fun because they don't have that influence of what everyone else thinks they should do.

    At least those screws broke off in the jaws and you were able to get them out. Some manufacturers had the screws going into the vice, with unfortunate results. I suspect Dawn threaded the jaws for that reason. I have a 5SP probably from the 1960s that needs cleaning up and painting. Cheers.

      @@LittleRestorers Hi, I've only just got my 5SP, so whilst it is waiting for a restoration, I'll put RP-7 on the screws and leave it to penetrate the threads. It was an impromptu purchase, because you have to purchase when you see one, in a salvage yard. This one has no scars from hacksaws or welding, even the knurled jaws are still quite sharp and prominent. It hasn't been abused in any way. It just needs cleaning up. Other selling points, it is made of steel and the isn't bent, so no one had used an extension on it. I've seen your 4SP video. That turned out nicely. 👍

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Uncle, I knew you'd like that one 😉. With the sandblaster, yes, the pressure inflated the gloves which projected the gun against the glass and everything just got sucked it... just a combination of everything that could go wrong 🤣👩🏻‍🔧.

    Nice paint! You'll have to do a trike with the cracked effect.
    I did 2 mountain bikes with a similar effect. One with electric blue under the black & the other hammer tone gunmetal grey under black.
    Had to do a few test runs with the hammer tone before I was happy with it before spraying the frame.
    Time to experiment!

    I have the same vice, but one thing has stumped me. How did you get the new split pin in, the length of it is longer than the width of the vice, as you turn the spindle the pin touches the sides. I was thinking shortening the split pin but it may not be able to fold back to hold the washer/spring? I may have to use an aluminium pin as the steel pin is difficult to fold back

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  3 месяца назад

      From memory, I think I just forced turn the spindle, so it crushed the splip pin to one side. Then, opened the other leg the opposite way. Think on another vice , I had to cut the pin length. What I would say is ,yeah, the steel pin will hit and scratch the sides but you should be able to get it to fold under 1 turn. Personally, I wouldn't trust an aluminium pin to handle the pressure over time. 👍
