richard was actually so much more ruthless than emily. when he scolds lauraleigh it is always because of the insult she caused his family name while emily scolds her because lauraleigh didnt want her in her life.
This is one of the things I hated the most about Richard and Emily when it came to Rory. They keep treating her like she's the "Do-Over Lorelai" just because she's still a kid and nicer to them than Lorelai is, and because she a well educated person. She is not their daughter. As grandparents, their job is to spoil her, not treat her the way they treated Lorelai. Just because some pretty boy comes their way, they act like her whole life's gonna go to hell and she'll end up pregnant. No matter what they think, she is not a Do-Over Lorelai. She is her own person, and is proud of it. If her mother's trusts her, shouldn't that be enough? Richard and Emily both need to learn that they agreed to this arrangement to get to know Rory, and be financially in charge of her high school education, until Lorelai pays them back. Not so they could co-parent her themselves, and bulldoze over how she lives her life, or whom she chooses to live it with
"Grandparents are supposed to spoil not coparent" Says who? Rory is a very immature and already spoiled 17 year old who needs a wake up call once in a while. And since her mother is too busy being her funny and relaxed friend, somebody has to be the parent and spit out the cold facts. Because you can't be both, gotta pick. And Dean (the way they wrote him later on) wasn't good enough for Rory. She had major ambitions, to be this great journalist, travelling the world, Dean was still bagging groceries and had no future plans. He also wanted a housewife or at least a woman who is home every night waiting with the dinner on the table, which obviously Rory couldn't be. So it's only natural for Richard to be afraid Dean might derail Rory from her great future, might get her pregnant or convince her to drop out. Sure, they were also great snobs who of course wanted Rory to marry well, into some old money family, like Logan's. But I don't think Richard was out of line. However, he was incredibly rude and crass to Dean, he could've discussed this in private with Rory. But I guess he really wanted to show Dean he did not approve of the relationship.
@@Ariana-wv4pf a lot of people say that grandparents need to spoil. That's why they're grandparents. Their jobs as parents are towards their own children and Rory isn't their daughter. They were too hung up on the past to give Rory and Dean the respect they deserved as a couple instead of having flashbacks to how they failed with Lorelai. Not only did they apologize to Rory but they still should have apologized to her mother. Rory didn't deserve that outburst from him and neither did Dean. Richard deserved to taste his own medicine, but it's a slightly different scenario. Richard socializes with Mitchum and knows his whole family. They are in the same circles, so it's kind of messed up for the Huntzburgers to insult the Gilmores and low class behavior. They were trash talking the Gilmore's family name behind their back. Richard did it to Dean's face. And ironically, Rory was better than 98% of women that Logan could possibly bring. She's classy, beautiful, actually loves him, smart, and comes from a very good family. There might be wealthier women but it will end in divorce if they don't love each other and the Huntzburgers have more than enough money. It's also ironic coming from Shira(Mitchum's wife) since she's a literal nobody.
So let me get this straight. Logan and Dean both met Richard when he was still alive, Richard got to be rude to both Logan and Dean (even though Richard liked Logan but that's besides the point).
