Haydn is the father of the symphony. His music is amazing in harmony, grace and elegance. Viva Haydn a true genius of music that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure and haunting music. Bravissimo.

There is no such thing as The Worst Haydn Symphony. Here, we have something very innocent and very appealing in an early Haydn symphony. Forgive me to say that this symphony is pure escapist fun for me and it always puts me in a very good and joyous mood.
Rather than listen to a lot of the early symphonies in one sitting, it is better to listen to one of them over a day or two until it sinks in.
Before the Sturm und Drang symphonies (the 40's), please enjoy, #6, #22, #26, #27 and #34

Nice whiff of Mozart's 'La Finta Semplice' overture sequencing from 0:23 to 0:29 reworked from his own K.45 symphony in D. Which obviously Haydn's 4th predates by nearly a decade. Just little impressions I gather when luxuriating in FJH's youthful compositions of scintillating genius.

He is the father of symphony. His music really inspired many others to do their own symphonies.

Not that any of this is bad, but considering what Haydn was capable of putting out, this doesn't even scratch the surface. The syncopation in the 2nd movement is interesting but that's all

This was ranked as the worst symphony out of the 104. Some guy listened to all of them and ranked them.

Titanandenceladus, Listen to Antal Dorati's version with the Filarmonica Hungarica on RUclips or, even better, I had the privilege of hearing it live with Gilbert Varga (son of the great violinist Tibor Varga) conducting the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. It was magic! The slow movement was one of the most unforgettable experiences I ever had at a concert. I am a composer btw, and can't stand much of these supposedly historically authentic performances as they are generally pretentious and boring! And often misguided and not authentic at all!

Monteverdi definitely sounds wrong on modern instruments to me... The slow movement here is just waffle, nothing to admire. I will try the recording you suggest.

Shane Thomas, You are absolutely right, Renaissance and much of Baroque music can sound atrocious on modern instruments, hence my saying in the earlier comment that I can't stand "most" of the so-called "authentic" interpretations but not all. The problem is not the instruments themselves, it's the way the musicians play them. First of all, most of the time they are played badly and out of tune whereas the baroque musicians played them very well. Secondly, today's practice is based on pure speculation, often misguided interpretation of old texts. There is no evidence that Baroque and Renaissance string players or singers didn't use vibrato. In fact, there is musical evidence to the contrary. And countertenors are not castrati! They don't have the same color or power. Another major element of Baroque music was improvisation almost to the level of jazz music. But it's completely ignored today because the musicians have no idea how to do it.

Are their any recordings that demonsrtate this improvisation? I need to hear this
