The inconsistent jump heights in Competition mode are definitely a bug that seems to happen with certain controllers. I never once experienced it myself in my five years of developing the game, so I was pretty blindsided when reports started coming in. Cause yeah, that is super frustrating. I'm trying to figure out how to fix it.

Triple Trouble 16 Bit feels like it came out of an alternate universe where the Sonic 3 devs were able to squeeze out one more game on the Genesis. Didn't have the time or resources to make it as meaty as S3&K, but were damned to make sure it would be just as good, if not better, of a game regardless. Personal Game of the Year for me.

Same. This will be how I always remember Sonic Triple Trouble, and it's honestly on the level of the other official Sonic games in terms of quality & polish.
Atomic Destroyer is actually my favorite Sonic final level. I struggled so much at it but it was so fun, and it felt so satisfying to beat it's second act in one go. Of course, the rest of the game is really good and I'm surprised that they got the special stages right, they're actually pretty fun. Oh and playing as Tails is also really fun for exploration. I played as him for most of my playthrough, actually!
After finishing both stories of this game with all the emeralds, it was absolutely worth the wait! It was a bit on the easy side up until the final zone, and I did unfortunately have a couple of bugs, control quirks, and soft locks (mostly in the final zone and all of which should eventually get fixed), but other than that, I loved it! Bosses might be the best of the classic games, level design in general is fantastic, the story actually works really well (especially with Metal Sonic), the music is phenomenal, and overall, it’s an incredible experience. I honestly enjoyed this more than Sonic 1, 2 and CD, and I’m not exaggerating on that! I really hope they release the soundtrack for this soon, as well. Atomic Destroyer Zone Act 2’s music is seriously god-tier!
The avalanche escape at 8:47 is a reference to Mickey Mania, a game made by the same folks behind Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R, which does the same graphical trick shown in the video. Didn’t expect a real Genesis to be able to do Some thing like that right!!
I definitely gotta give this game a try when I tackle the classic series someday. Plus from what I've heard, they really outdid themselves for a Sonic fan game at that, so clearly there was major love put into this and that's awesome to hear.

The amount of work that went into this game is insane. The developer could have easily just made a remake with a graphical and musical update and called it a day. But he did so much more.
True, however the Sea Fox actually originates from... Triple Triple itself. It can only be piloted when you're playing as Tails. (Sonic gets Jet shoes instead.) Haven't played the 16-bit version but Matt's footage shows Tails piloting it (despite him saying Sonic)
Not to be that guy but there are various things they could improve on. First off, there's a bug where the timer doesn't reset properly after reaching 10 mins (which is easily done in level 1 since it's so big), and that leads to dying over and ver at Fang because you only have 10 seconds after starting at the checkpoint. First level has too many super high walls that you waste your time checking with flying tails, and I encountered another bug where tails would not descend until I switched to Sonic (which would also make me lose control of tails unlike when it doesn't glitch out).
there are 2 things I want to comment about this video 1. the thing you said about level design couldn't be any more factual. after having played sonic and the fallen star prior to this, I was massively disappointed by the level design as it just felt empty and automated which didn't really fit with the momentum style moveset. it also didn't take advantage of any of the stage gimmicks they had outside of 2 zones(which are the ones taken from press garden from mania). triple trouble 16 bit on the other hand, did everything right here. the levels bring back the mix of speed and platforming the series was known for and made the stage gimmicks not only known, but seamlessly integrated into the flow of the stages. 2. atomic destroyer act 2 goes so god damn hard everything about this song is perfect, even the bits where the song cuts out for a while. the silence in those moments, while brief, are deafening(if that makes any sense) and just adds so much to the vibe of the stage. so basically, THEY USED SILENCE AS A GOD DAMN INSTRUMENT AND IT'S PERFECT.
Fallen Star was a visually appealing game, but I agree that beyond that it's level design was very lacking, with the majority of stage gimmicks being almost entirely aesthetic choices and not really being interacted with in a tangible way. It was a alright single playthrough, but nothing I see my replaying. Triple Trouble understands what made games like S3&K replayable. It also made the inclusion, or the lack of exclusion, of the lives counter much more meaningful. Beating the game the first time around with only 3 lives left, then beating it again with over 10 lives left is an easy way to tell how much better a player has gotten at the game.

Your remark about how Knuckles being Metal Sonic is stupid rubbed me the wrong way. If you play Knuckles's story mode, you get to see what's actually going on with that. It's far less outlandish than you might think.
It's nice to see you doing a great fan game review. I recommend also playing Sonic and the Fallen Start that came out recently too and is absolutely fantastic.
I actually have played this remake, with a keyboard. I wish had a controller to play it. I don’t play many fan games because they’re all PC-Exclusive and I don’t really like that. I’m looking forward to that android port that the creator teased because I might control better than me playing it on a keyboard which feels a little awkward. I hope it delivers a better experience. Anyways, this is looking great so far! :)
This game was so good. Definitely should be a sequel to sonic 3 & knuckles. Then followed by sonic 3d in 2d and mania. Also, sonic classic 1 and 2 are great they’re like sonic cd
I absolutely love this review. I was 6 in 1991, so I've been a sonic fan since day one. Back then when game boy and game Gear were new, I definitely liked them, it's just they were always lesser versions of console games at the time and all of us 90s kids had this sorta universal belief "nothing that happens on handheld are cannon". Even though I had the first sonic for game gear and enjoyed it, I just always tried my best to get console versions with my limited allowance and lawn cutting money. I read a lot about triple trouble in magazines back then but assumed it was probably Like the first two sonics on game gear. Your review made me regret skipping out on it. Comics given out with a game were pretty common back them, but unheard of with hand-held titles. I loved comics with games. One of my early examples of these comics was the Keith Courage on turbo graphix. As an OG 90s kid of the 16 bit Era, this 100% would have passed as a sonic game back them, to the point of it being considered better than sonic 3 complete. Thank you for making this, ill be downloading and playing this game.
While there are a few technical hiccups (like the game crashing and me falling through the stage in robotnick winter) the game is really good. Like I expected it to be good, but it blew me away with all the things that happens, with a train chase, escape sequence, and snow boarding away from an avalanche! It all felt amazing and they did my boi metal sonic well.
The intro zone is called Zero Zone internally for some reason. You fight the remains of the Doomsday Zone robot and there are parts of the Death Egg shattered around which is really cool. And also, the Robotnik boss battle shouldn't have been the final boss of the game in the remake but the penultimate boss and a new Death Egg Robot like boss should have been the actual final boss in an original zone. I mean, the remake has original zones that did not appear in the 8bit original. In my opinion the final boss is more like a machine like Sonic 1 Final Zone and Sonic CD which is kinda a downgrade to the huge robots from Sonic 2 and 3k. On the other side, this game takes place like 5 minutes after you beat Robotnik in 3k, so in that case Robotnik just didn't had enough time to build a proper combat machine to battle Sonic.
I also wasn't completely sold on the final boss of this game if the player has all the emeralds. A lot of it has to do with the design though. I also kind of wonder where the Atomic Destroyer comes from story wise. Was it a piece of the Death Egg? Did Robotnik/Eggman have another spacecraft/space station standing by? (a prototype to the Death Egg?)
I hope this guy does a 16bit remake of Sonic Chaos. Both Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble were both release for the SEGA game gear. Since this guy got so much praise from Sonic fan community for doing this remake of Sonic Triple Trouble in 16bit. So I would like to see him do a remake of Sonic Chaos in 16bit.
I just finished playing the Sonic and Tails campaign and started the ??? campaign and I must say... I had no idea there was a tie in comic and I most certainly did not need it. The way the story unfolds before your eyes and the things you learn while transitioning into the ??? campaign tells you everything you need to know about the story.
I definitely wanna try this but This is really the best Fangame that is really pollished and I consider it a Canon game but I do not mind the bugs and glitches, and I really love the music and the cutscenes of the Triple Trouble Music but I hope there is a mobile version and the bosses are amazing, but I agree with your review and I really like the bonus content and the gameplay but I think that the Triple Trouble 16-bit remake is really amazing and is a cool game.

Honestly, I don't really tend to be into most Sonic fangames since a lot of them just tend to go for this extremely cluttered and flashy vibe that just doesn't tend to feel cohesive like a lot of actual Sonic games do, but this is probably one of the few fangames I've seen that actually _don't_ fall for that trap for once, and actually manages to feel like something Sega could've done in the 90s, which is extremely cool to me and is definitely the reason why I'd widely prefer something like this over Fallen Star, which every single Sonic fan is foaming at their mouth for atm I also love a lot of the references to other Genesis games in some of the levels too like the snowboard section in Robotnik Winter Zone Act 2 being from Mickey Mania (which was made by the same people as Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R btw) and the part literally right before the final boss in Atomic Destroyer Zone Act 2 being a nod to Ranger X as well, and the music in general is pretty nice and definitely feels way better to listen to than a lot of the music on the Game Gear original, though that's less because of the music itself being bad and more so because the Game Gear sound chip is just complete ass, so I'm thankful that there's a way better version of these tracks to listen to that aren't being held back by it's limitations as much haha

Playing this game is sooo good , I feel like sonic weights like a 100kg , it is hard to move sometime , otherwise ,the game is polished, great level design, the the connections between levels is on another level
It had a bug, when I made it to Atomic Egg and left the game since I had played enough that day, the game booted me back to the previous act with Metal Sonic despite the fact I had beaten it, and it gave me 5 lives instead of 2.

Both this and Sonic mania are very fantastic games, they were both created by dedicated fans and that's why the games are so good. And we can also see why the majority of Sonic origins was so bad, Christian Whitehead and his group wasn't all that involved in the development.
Wow seeing amazing Sonic fan games like this makes me wish I had a decent laptop to play just Sonic fan games especially Sonic omens looks fun as hell and story surprisingly pretty good for a fan I don't just mean pretty good I mean amazing the music and the final episodes final boss music is so good haven't heard a great Super Sonic final boss music in forever.
@@Barmeecarba No it's not, the level design is worse then Advance and it's visually in ways a step down from Sonic 3. It's a nice reinterpretation of the original Triple Trouble but it's not devoid of critique due to being a fangame.

I absolutely love the changes it makes to the story. It builds on the pre-established lore and It actually feels like a Sonic 4 in gameplay and story.

Same. I played it on Mac, so i had to use Parallels, i just thought there was a problem on my end, in terms of controller support though.

I definitely wanna try this but This is really the best Fangame that is really pollished and I consider it a Canon game but I do not mind the bugs and glitches, and I really love the music and the cutscenes of the Triple Trouble Music but I hope there is a mobile version and the bosses are amazing, but I agree with your review and I really like the bonus content and the gameplay but I think that the Triple Trouble 16-bit remake is really amazing and is a cool game.

Honestly, I don't really tend to be into most Sonic fangames since a lot of them just tend to go for this extremely cluttered and flashy vibe that just doesn't tend to feel cohesive like a lot of actual Sonic games do, but this is probably one of the few fangames I've seen that actually _don't_ fall for that trap for once, and actually manages to feel like something Sega could've done in the 90s, which is extremely cool to me and is definitely the reason why I'd widely prefer something like this over Fallen Star, which every single Sonic fan is foaming at their mouth for atm
I also love a lot of the references to other Genesis games in some of the levels too like the snowboard section in Robotnik Winter Zone Act 2 being from Mickey Mania (which was made by the same people as Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R btw) and the part literally right before the final boss in Atomic Destroyer Zone Act 2 being a nod to Ranger X as well, and the music in general is pretty nice and definitely feels way better to listen to than a lot of the music on the Game Gear original, though that's less because of the music itself being bad and more so because the Game Gear sound chip is just complete ass, so I'm thankful that there's a way better version of these tracks to listen to that aren't being held back by it's limitations as much haha

Playing this game is sooo good , I feel like sonic weights like a 100kg , it is hard to move sometime , otherwise ,the game is polished, great level design, the the connections between levels is on another level
You should really try Sonic the fallen star! It has great cutscenes animation and just give off such a great charm

It had a bug, when I made it to Atomic Egg and left the game since I had played enough that day, the game booted me back to the previous act with Metal Sonic despite the fact I had beaten it, and it gave me 5 lives instead of 2.

Both this and Sonic mania are very fantastic games, they were both created by dedicated fans and that's why the games are so good. And we can also see why the majority of Sonic origins was so bad, Christian Whitehead and his group wasn't all that involved in the development.
Dev should include option to skip gimmick sections after you beat the game once
Wow seeing amazing Sonic fan games like this makes me wish I had a decent laptop to play just Sonic fan games especially Sonic omens looks fun as hell and story surprisingly pretty good for a fan I don't just mean pretty good I mean amazing the music and the final episodes final boss music is so good haven't heard a great Super Sonic final boss music in forever.

No, feels unfocused and has some poor design and while it's fun and has some cool concepts I would consider Sonic Mania or Advance the real Sonic 4

It's a nice reinterpretation of the original Triple Trouble but it's not devoid of critique due to being a fangame.

I like this game but the fact that i have to read a prequel comic to get the context of something very important like why Knuckles is against Sonic and Tails... jeeeez... it's cometting the same error of Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces

Amazing video! I only played the first zone and i loved it but i struggled with a ton of lag since my laptop is absolute garbage. And once frontiers releases, please do us a favor and make a blind playthrough for us. Peace✌
