This is something Roger Ebert wrote in his review that alludes to what Rob said about a good message being botched by bad execution. "I have nothing against sentiment, but it must be earned." And I fully agree with this. RIP Roger Ebert.
Jacob Sullivan I say it's still honoring him because we know he's done better movies. It's why people talk about Mrs. Doubtfire and Aladdin more than Patch Adams.
Yeah. That's like saying you can't criticize Attack of the Clones cause Christopher Lee was in it. Or Super Mario Bros. (1993) cause of Bob Hoskins. Or Drop Dead Fred cause Carrie Fisher was in it (God rest her soul).
Speaking of Roger Ebert's review on Siskel & Ebert, Gene Siskel said he would like to call this movie "Punch Adams". For me, I like to call it "Jack Adams" because of the main character's behavior and attitude. Siskel also named this movie his No. 1 worst movie of 1998, the last movie he gave a Worst Of for a particular year before his death.
How?? Even his roommate that ratted him out was still his friend after the incident. If you perceived him as evil that's your own problem. As for the antagonist, people like that exist. Just because the antagonist was an actual bad guy doesn't mean he was Hitler evil lmao. The dean even had awful conflicts with Patch and went behind his back many times but they were still on speaking terms.
@@rintohsaka1928 Number 1) He never said they're Hitler-level evil. Number 2) He's probably just mad that the 'bad' doctors are cartoonishly mean and say crap like: "Human beings are not worthy of trust. It is our mission here to rigorously and ruthlessly train the humanity out of you and make you into something better! We're gonna make doctors out of you!" while Patch Adams makes fun of a catatonic person (fun fact: catatonic people can actually HEAR you during their episodes), steals from hospitals, works without a license and we're supposed to root for him and he's never in the wrong or should improve his ways, even after it gets two people killed. 3) I hate to break it to you, but even before Patch Adams existed there was a thing called... *_bedside manners_* among medics and doctors. Treating patients with decency is not something Patch Adams "invented". What the hell is this bullshit fantasy where the evil doctor refuses to refer to the patients by their name or causally talks about how they're gonna saw their leg in front of other people? They're a bunch of straw-men. The reason doctors shouldn't get too personal is because *of their own mental health* too: it would be devastating to befriend and get attached to numerous patients that go on to die or they fail to save. But again, bedside manners were a thing. This movie is childish and has zero faith in its audience. But the death of the fake romantic interest is infuriating because it COULD have been avoided if they just checked the background of that guy... *like a professional doctor should do* with their patients. And the movie never acknowledges this mistake or sees it as something to improve upon (good lord, that would be something in favor of the MEAN doctors!) her death is just an artificial sad moment Patch needs to move on from. Talk about designated hero.
The reason why the real guy was also mad was because one of the things he wanted to get rid off was the idea of medicine = profit. He actually runs a hospital completely out of volunteer work. This is the main point the movie missed.
What's totally bizaare is that the original factual Patch Adam is actually IN the movie. He's the guy with the big moustache, sitting behind Robin Williams during the courtroom scene! WTF?!
Sitting in a principle shooting scene won't give you an idea of what the movie will be like after editing/post/etc. I bet he was only there for that one scene. He couldn't have known what it would become.
I’m a mental health nurse and as part of my course one of the real Patch Adams former patients came to chat with us. And the movie is kind of a fuck you to the real guy and what he went through.
Thank you so much for taking this movie to task on the "evil old white guy doctor" stereotype. My late grandfather was one of these "old white guy" doctors, and he was one of the kindest, most fun-loving, and hysterically funny people I've ever known. Almost ten years after his passing, and I still have former patients of his telling me how much they loved him.
You'll be happy to hear Patch Adams's theories are popular, at least in sociological circles. It is known as the Environmental Perspective. The theory has had several studies supporting it. One such study found that hospital patients that had a pleasing surrounding (clean room, nice view, friendly staff) recovered faster than patients in neutral and negative settings.
Even Robin Williams didn't like Bicentennial man, or at least liked to make fun of it. "I'm driving across a bridge and the GPS is like make a Right Turn NOW and I say "no thank you, I'm really not suicidal" and it's like "Oh really? Because I saw Bicentennial Man" "OH FUCK OFF!"" And HA-HA-spital sounds like what the Joker should have renamed Arkham after he broke out. "CMON Bats, time to get well!"
So glad I watched Doug's original review before I had to watch this movie in health class back in high school. My teacher was pretty surprised when I mentioned about how much they changed the character of Patch Adams' deceased friend and how he don't care too much for the movie.
Yeah while I love many of the actors involved, there really needs to be a remake of this movie that actually tells the REAL Hunter Patch Adams story. It could really be a beautiful film and fair to what the REAL man stood for.
What I liked about "World's Greatest Dad" was because it didn't get schmaltzy like "Patch Adams" or "Bicentennial Man". When you think the movie was going in that direction, Williams' character pretty much goes "Fuck it" and skinny dips in the school's pool lol
The part that gets me is that the woman's arc is that she needs to learn not to be afraid of men, mostly to be Adams' love interest, but as soon as she trusts men an obsessed man kills her for rejecting him. In other words she was RIGHT to not trust men, the opposite of the intended message.
This makes me think, for some doctors the cold bedside manner can be part of a very understandable way of dealing with the job: If you went in thinking about how these are all people with loved ones and whole lives, that piles things up on top of all the stress the purely technical side of the job already has. To help cope with the enormity of it all, the doctor starts thinking of the patients less like people and more like machines to fix. I would love to see that explored more.
Jean-Pierre Moreno And the new Disneycember intro that's sure to come with it. I'm still reeling from how great the Halloween into was this year. I loved Gravity Falls, the parody of the shows opening was wonderful!
If you haven't done it already, I would love to hear your thoughts on The Thief and the Cobbler. As an animation fan, that film is always a fascinating one to talk about.

What I love about hospitals now now, is the semi-individualistic...uniforms with cartoon characters. The happy-gas guy for my operation was wearing a SNOOPY uniform top and hat. I was put totally at ease.
I watched Patch Adams with my family on Christmas, the day it premiered, and I remember not hating it, but when we got home, the first thing I saw when I switched on the TV was Siskel and Ebert trashing it and it immediately made me reevaluate my opinion of the movie. I don't want to sound like I'm so easily swayed, but I realized that a lot of the flaws in the story were things that I'd noticed, only I'd chosen to switch off the critical part of my brain when I watched it. I was annoyed at myself for having allowed the movie to manipulate my emotions as much as it had.
It's supposed to be a movie. Not a documentary on the guy. It was a good movie with a good performance from Williams and it had a good message. Don't be easily swayed. The not-very-rich hospitals in my town decorated to feel more inviting. Mostly by picking actual colors for wall paint. (Like "sunshine" - and painting one wall/trim a contrasting color) Also by hiring local photographers/artists to put large canvas of gorgeous local scenery. Absolutely every wall has a something pretty or a window to look at. (Unless the privacy curtains are drawn)
In my opinion, Bicentennial Man was Robin Williams' most underrated film/performance from while he was alive. It did have its problems/his usual stick but the message was good and had its moments that remind us why he was a great actor.
Ugh, we watched this movie when I was in nursing school. I just wanted to bang my head against a wall! Patch was, like, a Manic Pixie Dream Special Snowflake. FWIW, I work with neurosurgeons, and a LOT of them have difficulty interacting with people (one in particular after 8 years still doesn't know my name). But that's ok. Brilliant people, they do a good job and they save lives.
I think the problem is that the film basically wants to be a "Dead Poets Society... but with DOCTORS!!!" instead of being a faithful biopic. Do that mediocre film if you want to, but don't involve real people's names if you won't give them justice.
Are you saying that Dead Poet’s Society is mediocre? If so, even though I watched it twice just to try and get into it, but didn’t I since I felt like it was trying TOO hard to make me see the beauty of life, poetry, etc, but it didn’t really examine WHY those things were so important, outside of the typical “Don’t conform and be yourself”, while sentimental music blares away to tell you what to feel, the characters were one-dimensional and only developed near the third act, the romance between Chris and Knox was rushed, forced, they had no chemistry, and Knox practically stalked and embarrassed her in front of her school, confessed his love DESPITE BARELY KNOWING JACK AND SHIT ABOUT HER, yet the movie plays it off like she really did like him and reciprocates his feelings, pretty much implying that it’s okay to do creepy shit like that as long as you get the girl in the end, and that final “O Captain, My Captain!” scene was so sappy and overdone, it really set my teeth on edge, if the students had secretly snuck a letter signed by them to Mr Keating, thanking him for what he taught them, quoting the aforementioned poetry and saying goodbye, then it would’ve felt more genuine and believable, but nope, we got this instead!
Doug, I think it would be awesome if you did a series on Rick Moranis. I grew up loving his films. I realize his career is kinda in limbo, but I really miss seeing him
Matt R He can't, people would throw a freaking hissy fit because of Robin Williams' death. When I first watched the review in 2013 people LOVED in but when I revisited it in 2014 people were so upset even though that review came out like 2/3 years before Williams' death. I'm sure Doug would love to do a review for one of his movies (Bicentennial Man probably) but sadly it would receive backlash
Aime-Lynne yeah, but Robin Williams is gone and no longer in the public eye to be triggered, and I respect him for his great movies, but it still would be fun seeing critic talk about movies like Bicentennial man and One hour photo, Doug loves Robin Williams in real life.
'Cause it was another case of wasted potential. The worst part is that it came out the same year Williams was receiving praise for both One Hour Photo and Insomnia.
This movie is one of my few memories of health class along with my health teacher trying to sell her house and a sex ed video narrated by lord farquaad (I was spared the birth video thank god) and I have to say, basically every problem brought up here I noticed as well however my main memory of the movie is my health teacher trying to censor William's butt in the last scene and ending up up making it an even bigger focus.
Mad TV did a parody sketch of Patch Adams named Patch Kavorken. I wouldn't be surprised if the filmmakers would give a Kavorken film the exact same treatment.
I go to UNC where the college scene was shot and the most annoying part of the movie for me is they always walk into one building and walk out another or go into a building that is a dorm and go to a class room... and it kills me

Nostalgia Critic Junior I don't disagree about this movie being bad but... I don't think the Big Red Nose scene is why it is. IMHO its one of a bare fee good scenes in a crappy movie. It's like Hades in Disney Hercules (wrong spelling) or Catherine Zeta Jones in The Haughting 1999 and debatably (because I don't think she was good) Legend of Zorro. It doesn't save the movie but its still good though corny. Maybe its because Australia does the Red Nose Day and it reminds me of that. Look it up on Wikipedia.
Robin is one of *the* great actors, but he’s not a film maker, so when people are unable to critique a film he’s in I get confused lol. He didn’t make the film, he just performed in it. Every actors stars in bad films, even the greats lol.
No, we are not fine. Past damage, and comparatively minor consequences aside, the USA has to be treated as unstable and on the verge of death at this point. At best we might be able to relax in several decades if stability is restored and maintained, maybe.

That would be a fantastic remake. Fix the historical inaccuracies and examine the real issues and what the real patch adams was facing.
Robin Williams will always be my favorite comesians. But man, did some of his movies suck. The show he was in before he died showed real potential.
It's really nice hearing Douglas talk further about Hunter Adams. His NC review of that film is my favourite NC review.
Patch Adams: HE STEALS FROM HOSPITALS!!!
"I WOULDN'T SEE THAT!"
Short answer, don't alienate or demonize if you're trying to deliver a strong message.
Stern: The Pokemon list is an absolute good. The list is life.
Schindler: I could have catch them all.
Robin Williams did a slightly more accurate doctor portrayal film - Awakenings, as Dr. Oliver Sacks.
It's Malcolm Sayer Robin Williams portrayed in Awakenings.
No. Oliver Sacks. That "Malcolm Sayer" was Sacks. Check who wrote the book. Get back to me.
Happy birthday Doug Walker!
happy birthday Doug, best wishes. Hope you have a great day
In my opinion, Bicentennial Man was Robin Williams' most underrated film/performance from while he was alive. It did have its problems/his usual stick but the message was good and had its moments that remind us why he was a great actor.
After Robin Williams died, the real Patch Adams wanted to say that he had nothing against him and liked him as a person. How nice.
Dr. House: What do you think is better? A doctor that holds your hand as you die, or one that ignores you as you get better?
Nostalgia Critic: God's not dead
Make it happen, Walkers!
i would love to see a remake of this film.
After doing some research, I discovered that this guy is not only still alive, but even he didn't like the movie.
Thank you guys for treating the topics and your audience with respect. Keep up the good work. "Dude, whe're critics." : - )
You guy's do make a place were people can be happy, I really appreciate it.
That poster at the end.... pure brilliance.
No one would want to go to a ha-hospital, but a ha-ha-hospital, it would be like printing gold.
I'm glad im not the only one who thinks the movie needs to be remade
I love that stranger things reference in the opening
When Doug went out of the room, I felt like I was watching Real Thoughts on Garfield the Movie again. 😄
Doug, I think it would be awesome if you did a series on Rick Moranis. I grew up loving his films. I realize his career is kinda in limbo, but I really miss seeing him
i am all for the remake, somebody make that happen.
Happy birthday Doug, also you should do a review on Robin Williams other movies.
Flubber :(
Now THIS is a safe space I can get behind!
Why is it that Doug always looks like he's being held hostage when he's not playing a character?
Death to Smoochy is incredibly underrated
Spumoni Sloth I agree. I love that movie!
Spumoni Sloth it's a rocket ship lol
yes to smoochy. Vincent Schiavelli = best hitman ever
I seriously fucking love these videos... you guys are brilliant and are a ton of fun to watch. Never stop! :) 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I wonder where Doug got his shirt from, its awsome
I love Death to Smoochy! I don't get why it gets so much hate.
Spinlok
I love that movie too
Because the movie you love is shit. It's okay to love a shitty movie. It's not okay to be in denial about it.
Spinlok Friends come in all sizes
It isn't shit, it's an underrated comedy.
'Cause it was another case of wasted potential. The worst part is that it came out the same year Williams was receiving praise for both One Hour Photo and Insomnia.
This movie is one of my few memories of health class along with my health teacher trying to sell her house and a sex ed video narrated by lord farquaad (I was spared the birth video thank god) and I have to say, basically every problem brought up here I noticed as well however my main memory of the movie is my health teacher trying to censor William's butt in the last scene and ending up up making it an even bigger focus.
and Happy Birthday to you as well Doug
Im only liking for the Pika's List poster.
Happy birthday Doug
Pika's list needs to be made into a movie! "I... I could've caught them all."
I always love the part where the critic just flips the bird as his only reaction.
Pretty good summary especially since they can go more in depth into the real Patch Adams and talk about the messages
Mad TV did a parody sketch of Patch Adams named Patch Kavorken. I wouldn't be surprised if the filmmakers would give a Kavorken film the exact same treatment.
Doug, that shirt is superb.
I go to UNC where the college scene was shot and the most annoying part of the movie for me is they always walk into one building and walk out another or go into a building that is a dorm and go to a class room... and it kills me
Gary Oldman could be Oscar Bait Patch Adams
Review "Dead Poets Society"!!!
+Victor Vaz Kinda hard because that film is actually very very good
Victor Vaz We need a Robin Williams Month with Bicentennial Man and Dead Poets society
yesssssssssssssssss
That movie annoyed me.
That's a great idea!! They really should do that!
I'm so going to hell for laughing at the Schindler's List spoof...
Happy Birthday, Doug! And yeah, I think the Ha-Hospital's a great idea.
The real Patch Adams looks like Rip Taylor's final form
Great video guys & happy birthday to Doug .
LET ME EXPLAIN. THERE IS ORTHODOX, UNORTHODOX AND MOST UNORTHODOX! YOU ARE HERE!!!!. Aw man this one of my favorite reviews of his, this came out the same year that he quite the NC all the way back in 2012, it was right after Star Trek Month. Not my favorite month because I'm a Star Wars Nerd rather than a S.T. one but it was amazing because of how many he did in one month I hope he does another crap load like that again, just don't over due yourself Critic that was the whole reason you quite in the first place XD. I still can't believe that they would make up a fake love interest for Patch in place of his real life best friend that was killed. I mean that stupid "based on a true story" thing was defiantly pushed to the 'enth degree. They should remake that movie and it proper because what the actual Hunter Adams did was really fascinating and I'd love to learn more aboot him. RIP Robin Williams he will be missed, man this year has really sucked, we lost David Bowie, we lost Kenny Baker(R2-D2), we lost muhammad ali, we lost Abe Vigoda(by the by I now always pull at my collar every time I watch NC's Good Burger Review because of the joke he made when he said 'Nothing can kill me I'm Abe Vigoda" XD XD. If you got this far that means you like hearing what I have to say well then allow me to introduce myself, Hey i'm NC JR I remember ABOOT it because I need reassurance that I'm not the only one EH. Wishing NC senior would review things from our generation(1999-2010s)Never fear your friendly Neighborhood Canadian Critic is here. LATEST REVIEW TEEN TITANS. now if you made it this far don't knock it before you try it and a sub would be much appreciated.
bring Back Dr BitchSpazums. He is one of the funniest characters in Nostalgia Critic Universe. XD XD
yeah man remember he shot him in the Patch Adams review and then in a later review confirmed that he was still laying on the floor dead. This is why I think the NC shoots in a studio.( lore wise)
Nostalgia Critic Rules
Nostalgia Critic Junior I don't disagree about this movie being bad but... I don't think the Big Red Nose scene is why it is. IMHO its one of a bare fee good scenes in a crappy movie. It's like Hades in Disney Hercules (wrong spelling) or Catherine Zeta Jones in The Haughting 1999 and debatably (because I don't think she was good) Legend of Zorro. It doesn't save the movie but its still good though corny.
Maybe its because Australia does the Red Nose Day and it reminds me of that. Look it up on Wikipedia.
@@KangaKucha Hercules isn't crappy, that title belongs to Pocahontas and some of the more recent things Disney has shitted out.
I seem to be one of very few people in the world who actually really like Patch Adams and love The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and Inferno.
This film needs a remake.
Look on the bright side guys, Mad Max Fury Road is gonna be our everyday life starting January 2017, OH WHAT A DAY WHAT A LOVELY DAY!
That didn't age well.
Metalhead10000 nope
@@Tadicuslegion78 Glad we agree. 😁
These two would be great directors
Robin is one of *the* great actors, but he’s not a film maker, so when people are unable to critique a film he’s in I get confused lol. He didn’t make the film, he just performed in it. Every actors stars in bad films, even the greats lol.
See 4 years later, you are fine. We are about to hit darkness soon.
👀 someone else is binging this playlist too.
No, we are not fine. Past damage, and comparatively minor consequences aside, the USA has to be treated as unstable and on the verge of death at this point. At best we might be able to relax in several decades if stability is restored and maintained, maybe.
That's actually where I end up when I need to be cheered up, NC and Channel Awesome alumni. AVGN etc
I could have swore you did this before. I never knew Greg was in it. Weird. Great review guys
2016 is great go cubs go
+Channel Awesome I have been copyrighted unfairly and I saw that whole process to fix that from happening can you guys give me advice what to do I disputed it but I have 3 claims on the video.
I MUST have that Koopa shirt! Where can I purchase this fabulous item?
Daniel Parry Thanks.
And the last few minutes is just them laughing... "Ha-Haspital" XD
Looks like there is a way to escape the horrors of 2016 after all.
Ha-hospital sounds like one of the Jokers shenanigans.
A big question comes to mind:
If you guys made the call, would you include the Robin Williams' "Patch Adams" in the narrative of the updated film?
Could be interesting visiting the real man's reaction to that.
I'm going to look up Roger Ebert's review now. Thank you for the suggestion.
Did you guys film this on election day? lol. That preamble seemed like it. Either way approved. You've got our back with actual humor. Been waiting for this Real Thoughts for a while.
Eric E. Better than hillary
Even in a movie like this, I just can't bring myself to hate Robin Williams
