- Just a quick video of my '65 Chevy. It has a 4bt (3.9) Cummins from an early 90's P30 step van. The transmission is a TH400 3 speed auto. I just recently had the stack (hater pipe) installed so I got the GoPro out and played a little. Any questions/suggestions/comments are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely beautiful truck love the 4BT cummins
Cool truck man. I bet you love your 4bt as much as I love mine!
Thanks! Your Ranger is very cool, excellent work. This old truck is still very much a work in progress, but it's fun to drive!
Awesome build!!
Awesome truck man! 👌🏻
Thanks!
Awesome build man! looking to do this myself but with a 50's pickup. Couple questions, did you box the frame, and do anything to the suspension?
Thanks! A 4bt weighs roughly as much as a big block Chevy. I didn't have to modify the frame in any way, although I had previously cut coils out of the springs to lower it, so it does sag farther than before.
Wait. That 4bt just bolted right in?!
How are the shift points on it? Is there a top mounted modulator for that? Also, did the slanted motor mounts on that thing fit right into the chevy frame mounts?
Got the smoke screw turned up i see
What type of torque converter and adapter did you use? Awesome truck too by the way!
Arthur Gallagher Thanks! The motor and trans both came from a Chevy step van.. I've never separated them, so I don't have any part numbers or anything. The trans is a th400, is assume it is just a 1 ton Chevy torque converter.
Do you have any info on the wiring for the swap ?
Hey man, I know this is an old video, and you may not see this, but did you use the stock front sump on the 4bt? I have a 65 c10 I'm putting the exact same frito truck VE 4bt that you have into it. Did you have any issue with clearance on the IFS or steering components?
The pan is super tight against the back of the cross member, but it doesn't touch.
The pans are reversible. Will need a rear sump pickup tube and relocate dip stick
What did you do for motor mounts? I found a 66 (I think) step side that I really want to put a 4bt in. Truck is only $2000
Any way you can answer a few questions for me ?? In trying to do that same build to my68 stepside
corbin heon Yeah, what do you need to know?
how does this run with a 3 speed auto. i wanna do this to my bronco at some point but i would like to keep the c6 3 speed auto it has now as i dropped some bread to get her rebuilt
Christian Schminkey It runs just fine, but since there's no overdrive I had to put 2.72 gears in the rear end to be able to go highway speeds. Good luck on your build!
Do you like the 3 speed? Does it have plenty of speed?
ty malbaurn At first it had 3.73 gears and it was miserable, but I swapped to 2.72 and it does fine now.
ZipTieAffair yea I want to at least do highway
Also how's the th400 for top speed what kinda mpg do you get I was messaging you on fb
4l60's are extremely cheap to rebuild. Not too difficult either. That'll give you overdrive. And a bit more dependability
Where can I get a 4bt? I plan on Cummins swapping my 1st gen Dodge
Striker x Cast They're most commonly found in step vans/delivery vans.
What motor mounts did you use?
By some miracle the mounts out of the Chevy step-van bolted directly onto my cross member.. I NEVER get that lucky. If you go to Facebook.com/moct911 and scroll way down you can see how it's mounted.
ZipTieAffair
Are you in oklahoma? If so, where? I'm from oklahoma.
Yes sir. I live in Talala, OK.
Is there a way I can email you I want to do the exact same engine swap in to my 65
ZipTieAffair. I am going to put a diesel in my 1949 F1. Not sure what engine to use. How's the 4BT holding up? would you go with a different engine?
how much did all that work cost you?
tony montana I paid $2500 for the donor truck, but I've never added up all the small stuff.
How many inches is that exhaust?
Thanks, great sound. Here in Brazil we have a mwm 229 engine that is 4 cylinders 3.9L good looking like the 4bt but it is more economical and has cheaper maintenance

what turbo do you have?
It's the stock Holset H1C.
