BMW reached into the mainstream with this 2 Series Active Tourer, a reasonably spacious and quite affordable family five-seat MPV. MINI underpinnings saw this as the brand's first front driven model and it's certainly a classier, more interesting alternative to a conventional Scenic-style compact MPV. Does it add up as a used buy?

    Great review!! Thank you!!
I´ve had a 225xe now for almost a year. It is absolutely fantastic!
I was very skeptical at first, having had big 5 series BMW´s. But this has turned out to be a very versatile allround car. It is subtle and quiet in the everyday city driving. There are chargers everywhere and I can use the electric motor about 95% of the time when in the city.
When I travel further it has a very good fuel consumption. I start off with full electric batteries which gets me about 40-50 kilometres. (I have the newer 10kW battery) Then it switches to the petrol engine. I´ve learned to utilize the settings to the fullest. I sometimes put it on "eco pro" so I can use the coasting where it disengages both engines and doesn´t regenerate power to the battery because that slows the car down.
I also take full advantage of the regenerating when going downhill and sometimes switch from "eco pro" to "comfort" to switch on and off the generator to balance the speed for example when going down maintain roads or steep hills.
The fuel consumption on long drives is about 5.5 l/100km. In the city it´s about 0-1.5 l/100km. I do take a lot of long journeys across the country for work and i did restart the on board computer right after I bought the car. Then I use the "road trip computer" for each journey to see the individual short term consumption.
The average consumption since I bought the car and after 21.000 km is 4.0 l/100km.
It is very fun to drive and great for overtaking. It has a lot of standard equipment and I´m very pleasantly surprised by how it keeps making me happier and happier.
I did have it remapped for more power. And boy oh boy does this car have potential to be a real beast!
It was good before but now it is an absolutely perfect "sleeper".
It is now 5.8 seconds doing 0-100 km/h! And it just goes on and on until after about 130 km/h it´s acceleration slows down a bit. Probably because the elecric motor stops helping around that speed.
Where I live the winters are very hard. I did have an x-drive 4x4 5 series before this one. The 225xe is an outstandingly better car in the snow! It´s bottom isn´t as spacious and have as long distance between wheels. The 5 series did have a tendency to sit on it´s "belly" and get stuck. The 225 also has a pretty high road clearance (17cm) without compromising it´s driving handling.
So, I get to use a good BMW thats good to drive without almost any fuel in the city AND I can take long journeys with a fast, comfortable car without worrying about range at all and with a very good fuel consumption.
And in the city, on my family MPV, I can whenever I want hit the "Auto Drive" and "Sport" setting and have a lot of fun with great, dynamic BMW feel to it 😎.
Could not recommend this car any more for people that want to have a practical, spacious, fun car that gets the "goods" from both worlds without worrying about range!

hello mate, yout 'review' was very informative to me as i want to buy an 225xe but you touches on some key areas that are important to me ,but no-one has really talked about , i know it's a bit late but I hope i can still get an answer :D : You said you start in electric drive( in long drives ) then switch to petrol, and you still manage to get 5.5 L /100 km ? That sounds awesome, i just thought when the electric battery is done, you run on full petrol (meaning fwd and the extra consumption that comes with the weight ) , untill you charge it again, but you implied that even if the electric range is done and it switches to petrol ,it will still be an 'hybrid' consumption.
Another very important point you made was with the X-Drive, what happens to it when you have no more electric range? Does it become just FWD or will the gas engine step up to charge the batteries and try to remain 4WD? Cause in the mountains, i doubt the battery can keep a decent range especially when climbing , and I fear it will just leave me with an extra heavy FWD car.
Another genial thing you've done is to remap it , I saw some remaps with it, it got around 280 hp and 400 Nm of torque, which is ....lets just say, a lot for a everyday car, it burns most of 'sporty' cars on the road, and oh man that 5.8 seconds 0-100km/h ,very nice.
The only thing that got me worried is the 3 cylinder engine, as far as I researched, there's no bit issues with it and it seems pretty reliable( hence the remap,it goes from 130-140 hp to 180hp no problem ) but i'm still a bit concerned as historically most 3cyls aren't holding up that great with age.
How many kms does it still have now? How's the reliability? Do you plan to keep it around when the car hits 150.000 km ?
      Thanks for taking your time.
      Adrian

had it and driven daily for 4 years. Just a wonderful car, an perfect allrounder. Roomy, performance wise, driveability, luxurious, quiet, comfort & performance. Only improvement I needed is a bit wider seat area (the back is good).

A seriously good review, by far the most informative reviews online. The 2 series wasn't on my radar at all, but I am now considering the 220d xdrive after watching this.

I bought a used 2018 220D Luxury Active Tourer Xdrive as a result of this excellent review and I love everything about it, great value as well.

What MPG do you get out of it as I’m considering the identical version 220D Luxury active tourer XDrive.

All this and BMW still won't fit rear screen wipers. And yes there are times when they are needed.
