- Check out this footage of The Band performing "The Weight" live during the Festival Express tour in 1970. You can find this performance and many others on Shout! Factory's release of Festival Express. Buy the film here: www.shoutfacto...
In the summer of 1970, some of the eras biggest rock stars all took to the rails for Festival Express, a multi-artist, multi-day, multi-city concert tour that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lives, slept, rehearsed and let loose aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Winnipeg, to Calgary, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience was filmed both off-stage and on, but the extensive footage and sound tapes of the events remained locked away for decades, only recently having been rediscovered and restored. The film Festival Express is a momentous achievement in rock film archaeology which combines the long-lost material with contemporary interviews that add important context to the event nearly 35 years after originally being filmed.

The video Festival Express was a unique moment in time, all performed next to the train tracks, please don't knock them for the quality, watch the movie and you will understand why there were issues. This is a classic, accept it.

This is the most American thing I've ever seen. God bless everyone here and BE SAFE!
Especially considering they were Canadian, except Levon
@@Fuq2 lol and this performance is in Winnipeg in july 1970 lol
Robbie's mic was muted. Thank god cuz levon and Rick were amazeballs. Garth and Richard were bringin it home
robbie couldn't sing lmao. i'm fairly sure he only sang lead on one song for all of their records
Robbie wasn’t a great singer, but yes, he sung lead on “To Kingdom Come” on Music From Big Pink & it was a pretty cool vocal. Obviously he wasn’t a prominent voice in the Band but contributed basic back-ups ... always amuses me when people suggest his mic was “muted”(?) or switched off - as if they would really know - he certainly did not lack credibility, & there really was no reason whatsoever for him to do something so inauthentic. So, unless you were there...
@@matthewsnider1905 LMAO ...is that the best you got superstar? robbie couldnt sing lmao. You are fairly sure? Two things hotshot. a) your not a band fan b) your are not a musician.
Holy fucktard you must be a low quality human...or wait...just a millenial
@@andrewmair7371 PEOPLE crack me up with some comments like they were roadies who set up the stage and know his microphone was turned off
@@matthewsnider1905 RR sang great did you turn his microphone off Give me a break
Fuckin' beautiful.
Levon yelling to the soundman, "Turn Robbie's mic off" at 1:03
Na.. looked at 20 times and he’s not saying that. He may be saying turn his mic down, but I’m not positive about that.
The band😎👊🎼🔥🔝💪
Great one!
Clássico dos clássicos
so cool!
i dare to say anyone knows where this is recorded *WE LOVE RICK DANKO*
If you still haven't found out it's from the film
"Festival Express". If I remember correctly the majority
of their performance was cut out due to legal reasons.
But luckily for us someone was kind enough to upload another one
of their performances here, Slippin And Slidin.
There are three Band performances in "Festival Express", Slippin' And Slidin', (Toronto), The Weight, (Winnipeg) and I Shall Be Released (Calgary).
@@WordslingingStephen unreal performance. its on Tubi for free right now. That promoter had not a care in the world how much money he was losing. guy wanted a party.

Take a load off, Annie
And (and, and) you put the $2.99 stream right on me...
Fanny!
lol
Rick danko with the custom ampeg bass
Fairly certain that Levon tells the sound guy to turn off Robbie's mic at 1:03. Terrible singer.
told him to turn it down i think
moralitykills Maybe. I'm not certain what he says, but I read somewhere that that Levon and (I think) Rick would ask for Robbie's mic to be cut (or perhaps just turned down).
Clearly he says OFF
AOB Not true!
AOB Maybe. But he composed most of the songs.
Robbie and Rick looks so different with all that facial hair, they were much better looking in The Last Waltz, still love their singing and playing though.
This one was kind of a laugh performance, but I like it.
Video is about a second behind audio, but who cares!
notice levon shouting side stage...fallback issues....he probably couldnt hear what he actually sounded like.
These types of issues were too common til mid, late seventies.
Technology finally caught up to rocknroll and performance quality improved by leaps n bounds
He's admonishing the crew to turn Robbie's microphone off...
You don’t have to be a good lip reader to see that Levon’s saying “Robbie’s mic’s too hot!”
BassPlyr23 I couldn’t make that out
I wish I could watch all the band performances rather than the one song. I also wish they could have done much better mixing and shooting. This film is much worse than the Last Waltz in terms of sound and vision.
totally disagree. live shows are supposed to be raw and that moments vision. people are so used to being fed a studio manicured phony live album, they cant accept the real live experience relived. the true live album is one that shouldnt be tinkered with, mixed down and sanitized. i thought this was fantastic...but you really only get that pure live show on a bootleg. whats your beef with the sound?
Disagree. Purchase and watch Festival Express. Raw and natural. All the musicians on the train through Canada, a once in a life time show.
I was never blown away or even taken with the Last Waltz...it was Festival Express that woke me up to the Band, Grateful Dead and some lesser known acts...I guess we have our own opinions on that, just stating the personal effect it had on myself, especially the Band footage and the entire focus of each film. Last Waltz more of an overblown. Festival Express more of a open party of acts ranging from the bigger to more obscure acts, hanging out together getting loaded and playing music together.
You can tell in the early years, Levon was still trying to find his voice. Amazing performance tho
well he sure found it. then lost it...AND FOUND IT AGAIN! howboutdat! saw them a couple of times...true musicians out doing the road thing cuz that's what they do
Crazy Chester follow me !
Robbie wtf is that guitar tone
For some reason it always pisses me off watching Robbie sing into a mic that isn’t turned on just so it looks good.
Robbie's Telecaster playing sounds terrible in the mix.
damn, no fun critics. listen to the studio versions...i think the raw, drunk versions are a great contrast.
Yes.
