I remember at E3 when they unveiled and demonstrated commander mode being played on with a tablet. I think I even used to be able to play as commander from my web browser. I always had an idea for a game that's like StarCraft except all the units you control are actual players. This was the closest that ever came to that
Wait, you think this is the closest that ever came to that? Please check out Natural Selection 1&2 as well as the Savage series. You can still get games in Natural Selection 2 but I believe the only matches you can get in Savage these days are orchestrated. I am genuinely amazed that you've always had that idea yet don't know about these games.
I remember being so dissapointed in the beta because you couldnt even queue with friends on another console, even though you could still play with them in the same server. Me and my friend had to do countdowns to when we would press the join game button until we finally got in, only for the game to be complete garbage 😂
I rememeber being like 14 and hearing 2 40-something american men saying "yeah this commander is great, well done dude" when I was getting cruise missiles and just playing it like a top-down RTS with real players XD 14 year old me was ecstatic
You can click on the cruise missile while its coming in and you get a cool little camera on the nose to watch the impact, would have been crazy seeing all the people when it hit ground.
Commander from BF2 to BF4 is amazing. The fact you can attack and blow up the commander buildings in BF2, the fact you could (I did) play commander mode on tablets for BF3, just awesome.
Thats the kind of enemy grouping that only happens in our dreams, you either have no missle or by the time it gets there they have all either died or left. I fairly consistently get 4-5 kill missles and have even killed helis with them, but there was this one time i had a 12 kill missle while playing obliteration, ive never seen so much salt in my life.
This was in bz6, can tell since I recognize more than half of the names on the killfeed. Used to main that server a lot. I miss this game and it sucks I probably will never get to play it again…
I think BF1 would have been the perfect game for it, from scout planes as UAV to calling in Artillery Bombardment (Cruise Missle), to various other features.
@@YagamiMagatsuko it still is in game but only accessible from a pc with the game installed. The dedicated commander app for tablets/phones has been taken down
They were pushing E which was heavily defended, they're fighting to push up the stairwells while the defending team is on the roof. Judging by how many defenders were left they would've actually capped E if it weren't for the perfect cruise. I would be salty too if your otherwise perfect push was completely nullified because they had a CMDR and you didn't. There's a reason CMDR mode never came back after this game.
I loved commander mode so much, I remember playing it on the kitchen table years ago on my tablet. Was really sad when they removed it from tablets, controls were much easier there then on my PS4.
Battlefield got worse and worse over time. I dont understand how you can mess up such a good game. No need to reinvent the things that work well (like unnecessary specialists etc)
Been a thing for a long time. When the app was a thing. It was a very fun time killer on the go. Select it on your squads menu in game or on the server browser.
I don't know if I ever got eleven with ONE, but I did get 34 total on Flood Zone where it felt like every missile I shot got multikills. Best and last time I ever played Commander, I knew I'd never top it and wanted that feeling forever lol
I never touched Commander Mode until much later and it was fun. If you get teammates that follow through with your command it's really nice. Hell Let Loose one's too. First role I got to 10 over there.
I'm borrowing the concept from Endwar, but it would have been interesting to have the commander require an actual "tanky" vehicle in the play zone. That would have to be protected to keep Commander active. It could be relocated slowly, with no weapons. 1 seat for commander.
Would the M-RAP have worked? Perhaps if AI pathfinding allowed it, the commander could have ordered it to move around the map as a spawnpoint with a turret
I remember doing this on this map all game, and end up topped everyone in points EDIT: No wasn't this map, its was Flood zone where enemy are on top of roof in the centre.
it's a shame that battlefield didn't build on this feature. rather than pushing the chaotic combined arms battles with team coordination that has more casual gunplay, they tried making themselves call of duty with vehicles.
Shame they never continued as it was fun even though i played mainly for the achievements/badges and i also miss BF1942 with the Desert Combat Final mod where you could command a submarine and fire and guide tomahawk missiles to anywhere on the map. Fun times when the war felt real and you had all weapons of war including artillery constantly trying to kill you.
Playing as commander on console was super annoying. Hard to control, the cursor would always snap on to objectives. There was also a lack of ability to do anything. The most you could do is drop in an ATV or so. No tanks or anything that can really help the team. Ac130 was nice but was easily destroyed.
Even though I enjoyed commander mode, if you start playing it alot, you notice the weaker elements of its implementation. Ironically, the UI on PC is the same as on console and is clearly designed with console in mind. It controls awkwardly on PC. I will say that the real value of the commander role was more about ordering and controlling squads, rather than active abilities such as the cruise missile or dropping stuff.
It was annoying on console but it wasn't harder. Like yes, it would snap onto certain things, but you just had to move the joystick lightly. What I didn't like is not having cruise missiles.
It wouldn't work. Commander mode barely worked in BF4, mostly was gimmick to recreate dumbed down version of BF2 and 2142 commander. One of reasons it would not work in 2042 is because game is too fast paced, too COD-like - twitch shooter, headless chicken fest. BF2 and 2142 were bit slower paced, more tactical (to levels almost could nowadays be considered tactical shooter) and had better maps, in result commanders (that were actual server players) were more useful.
